Why support Special Olympics? Our mission remains as vital today as it did when the movement was founded in 1968. Our program, however, has transcended beyond just sports. Special Olympics Florida s year-round programs in health, education, community building, and sports address inactivity, injustice, intolerance, and social isolation by encouraging and empowering people with intellectual disabilities. For many, a Special Olympics program is the only place where athletes find an opportunity to participate in their communities, develop belief in themselves, and feel like champions. Special Olympics Florida has received the highest rating for four consecutive years from Charity Navigator, the premier charity evaluator of American-based charities.
At Special Olympics Florida, we care about the whole athlete. We are a community where everyone has the lifelong opportunity to develop physically, socially, and emotionally through sports, wellness, and leadership training. Special Olympics Florida offers 23 individual and team sports. Neither athletes nor parents/caregivers are charged a fee to participate in the program, and activities exist for all ability levels, from severely challenged to elite athlete. $0.87 of each dollar raised for Special Olympics Florida goes to program costs and services. In 2016, Special Olympics Florida provided 8,461 health exams to athletes, a value of more than $2 million.
