Sports Information Office 1500 University Drive Billings, MT 59101 Office: (406) 657-2100 Fax: (406) 657-2919 Lady Yellowjacket Basketball 2003-2004 Weekly Release #10 January 19, 2004 2003-2004 Schedule and Results This Week s Schedule: Thu., Jan. 22 at St. Martin s College Fri., Jan. 23 vs. Northwest Nazarene (at St. Martin s) This Week s Opponent: St. Martin s College Saints The Saints are an improved team over a year ago when the Yellowjackets beat them twice in Billings. They are 7-6 overall, but are in second place at 5-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. St. Martin s has won its last four games dating back to January 8. Three of those wins were against teams that the Yellowjackets have also defeated (Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska-Fairbanks and Humboldt State). Four of the Saints six losses came during a midseason losing streak against good teams, including Western Washington, who also defeated the Jackets. Four players are averaging double figures for the Saints, led by Martina Kartikova and Beth Layton who each average over 14 points a game. Kartikova, a 6-foot-0 junior from Slovakia, also averages 9.7 rebounds and shoots 81-percent from the free throw line. Julia Eisentrout and Stephanie Colbo average 12 and 10 points a game respectively. Northwest Nazarene University Crusaders The Crusaders were one of the top teams in the West Region last season, advancing to the NCAA Regional Semifinals where they lost to eventual West Region champion Cal State-Bakersfield. NNU defeated Western Washington in the opening round of the tournament. The Crusaders are down this season, posting a 6-7 overall mark through the first half of the season. However, after starting the year 2-5, NNU has won four of its last six games. Three of those wins are against teams that the Yellowjackets have also beaten (both Alaska schools and Humboldt). The Crusaders have lost to Western Washington and to Western New Mexico. Senior Heidi Buehler leads the GNAC in scoring, averaging 19.5 ppg. Three other Crusaders average at least 11 points a game, including Jenny Binford, who is fifth in the conference at 16.5 ppg. Buehler and Binford have combined for 60 of the Crusaders 74 made 3- pointers. Post player Danielle Pridgen nearly averages a doubledouble at 11.5 points and 9.2 rebounds a game. Counting the Green Mountain games, MSU- Billings will play eight of its final twelve games at home, including its final six. The Yellowjackets fell just eight points short of the all-time school scoring record Friday night. Six players scored in double figures, led by post players Robyn Milne and Tanya Petersen. Milne netted 15 and grabbed eight rebounds, while Petersen scored 19 on 7-of-9 shooting. Petersen has become the Yellowjackets most improved player this season, averaging 12.9 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. Alisa Lordemann and Jamie Barker each scored career highs in Friday s win, finishing with 13 and 12 respectively. Jenny Langford hit three 3-pointers for 11 points and Sophia Forney added ten points. In Saturday s game, Milne notcher her tenth double-double of the season with 17 points and ten boards. She also blocked two shots, giving her 39 for the season and 139 for her career. It was Petersen, however, who found her way into the school record book for blocked shots. She swatted seven in the game, the third most in school history, helping her move to 15 th all-time for her career. Shannon Harvey added ten points, and all ten Yellowjackets scored in the game. Jesscia Bratton had career highs with eight points and seven rebounds, and Sophia Forney pulled down a career-high 12 boards. Notes: * Three Yellowjackets are now climbing the charts in the school record book (see box to right).
