3 Cover TODT & STOKER CROWN BRITISH CHAMPIONS FIA President Jean Todt and FIA Deputy President (Sport) Graham Stoker crowned the 2016 MSA British Champions during the MSA Night of Champions ceremony in London last month (28 January). MSA Chairman Alan Gow hosted the winners of UK motorsport s most prestigious titles for the annual awards evening at the Royal Automobile Club. They were joined by a series of special award winners, each recognised for outstanding achievement. Steve Rider returned as Master of Ceremonies and was once again joined by colleague Louise Goodman. We were delighted to honour the MSA British Champions those who have excelled in their chosen discipline to win our premier UK titles, said Gow. Their achievements should be viewed in the context of one of the world s strongest domestic scenes; it takes an unrivalled level of skill, determination and dedication to accomplish such a great triumph in the UK. We also recognised other high achievers, along with a number of unsung heroes, for their outstanding contributions to UK motor sport. On behalf of the MSA I wish to congratulate them all on their success, and I also thank both the FIA President and FIA Deputy President (Sport) for joining us on this great occasion, which showcased the very best of UK motorsport. >> The winners, p It takes an unrivalled level of skill, determination and dedication to accomplish such a great triumph in the UK 3

The Court ruled that the requirement for compulsory insurance should cover any use of a vehicle, so long as that use is consistent with the normal function of the vehicle. This would require all competition cars in motorsport to have compulsory third party insurance. Shaw s appointment was confirmed at the club s recent awards evening. Since 1962 when Mary Wheeler MBE first conceived the idea of forming the BWRDC with just a small group of international racing drivers, the club s membership has expanded dramatically over the past five decades, said Shaw. A host of awards was presented during the ceremony, which featured Nathalie McGloin as the guest speaker. Applications are invited from anyone aged 14 or over who can drive but needs basic hand controls. The scholarship will offer two individuals the opportunity to participate in a range of club motorsports events in the Loughborough area. Loughborough Car Club members will run a suitably adapted car, enabling the scholars to compete against local and regional drivers on a level playing field. Ian Trott, 2011 scholar, still competes on club events. He said: The Loughborough Car Club Disabled Drivers Scholarship is a fantastic opportunity for disabled people to compete in motorsport events in a fully adapted car people who might well have thought that this was something they would never be able to achieve. With this opportunity, you can compete against and beat anyone! Apply today, you won t regret it. Scholarship organiser Richard Egger added: It became apparent that the popular misconception that motorsport is expensive and inaccessible applied to disabled drivers as much as any other individual. Driving competitively requires a large portion of mental skill and commitment and a lesser element of physical prowess, which makes it ideal for getting everybody competing on the same event on equal terms. 11 News CO-DRIVER TREKS SNOWDON FOR AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY Rally co-driver Dan Saunders is climbing Snowdon at night to raise money for the helicopter charity that rescued him after an incident on the 2016 Welsh Marches Mini Epynt Stages. Saunders and his partner, Mandy, will take part in the Snowdon Sunrise walk, a trek up Wales tallest mountain at night, in aid of Wales Air Ambulance. Recalling the incident, Saunders said: We were about 200 yards from the finish. We carried far too much speed, and Martin, my driver, straightened the car up to reduce the risk of rolling. The car was 20ft in the air, and we went straight off down the side of the mountain. By the time the emergency team had got me out of the car and back on the road, I was told that Wales Air Ambulance was on its way. I feel like I owe Wales Air Ambulance a lot, there will always be a soft spot in my heart for them. Each of Wales Air Ambulance s missions cost around 1,500 and every year the charity needs to raise 6.5 million to fund its operations. The MSA recently pledged up to 10,000 to each UK air ambulance service over a five-year period (see MSA Extra, November 2016). The agreement can be extended for a further three years when the class is re-homologated in Commenting on the new agreement with the MSA, TKM boss Alan Turney said: We are proud and delighted to add the prestigious MSA name and status to our national championships. 16 Technical Updates, clarifications and advice ROPS Competitors are reminded of MSA Yearbook regulation (K)1.3.8 which states that all welding should be of the highest possible quality with full penetration The welding pictured is not of the highest quality, as it is incomplete! Scrutineers have been advised to subject ROPS to scrutiny in accordance with the regulations incomplete welding will never prove acceptable. CAMERAS The MSA Technical Department wishes to issue a reminder of the regulations regarding helmet-mounted cameras. The image shows a camera mounting bracket attached to a helmet presented for scrutineering at a stage rally. MSA Yearbook regulation (K)10.3.3(d) is very clear in stating that the fitment of cameras to helmets by whatever means is not permitted unless an integral camera is provided by the helmet manufacturer and that model of helmet is approved under one of the accepted standards. The attachment in this picture is clearly not part of a camera integral to the helmet and as such is not acceptable for use in MSA events where a helmet is mandatory. FIA SEAT HOMOLOGATION LABELS The image shows a fraudulent seat homologation label. First, the spelling of the word manufactured at the top is wrong the c is missing. Secondly, the manufacture date is given as December 2012 but remember that the use of this old-style FIA homologation label ceased at the end of 2011, so a seat manufactured in 2012 must use the newstyle FIA label with a hologram. The manufacturer has confirmed that the label is not genuine, both from these two clues and also Sign up for alerts! through cross-referencing the serial number on their database, which shows that the seat with this number was in fact manufactured in December Accordingly competitors are again advised to purchase regulated safety items from a reputable dealer, and if purchasing from an alternative source such as another competitor, they should check very carefully for any suspicious details such as those outlined in this case shown. To sign up for notifications when proposed regulation changes are posted online for consultation, click HERE. 16 MSA Extra / February 2017

The event is welcomed by the college, with many of the students involved in the scrutineering, stewarding the assembly areas and supporting event staff as required. But on this year s event the college received unannounced visitors - Ofsted inspectors! Luckily the inspectors saw the event as a positive experience for the students and liked the interaction opportunity with the spectating public. Accompanied by local competitors David and Stevie Evans, and their Peugeot 205 rally car, the students enjoyed the opportunity to sit in the car while being told about its safety features as well as the safety precautions taken by competitors. At the end of the visit, students were invited to attend the Pacenotes Rally and thanks to Richard Young and the 500 Motor Racing Club of Ireland, vouchers were distributed, giving the children and their families free entry to the venue. He also encouraged 27 students to register as rally marshals, with 25 going on to marshal at the Cholmondley Castle Stage of WRGB. Behind the scenes students had been working towards a season of rallying in the MSA British Junior Rally Championship and at Autosport International in January announced that they would be running an R2 Fiesta in association with M-Sport. Pound said: The team will be competing in a freshly built M-Sport R2 National, with Harper Adams the first and only University in the UK to field their own team at this level, with all the positions from the driver, to service crew being filled by students studying at the university. This is a unique opportunity and a first for Harper Adams, branching out from the traditional agricultural background. As the RDO for the West Midlands it has been a great pleasure working with a very enthusiastic group of people, both tutors and students alike and Go Motorsport will continue to support and advise them and other educational establishments who want to promote motorsport within their curriculum. ASSOCIATION CENTRAL SOUTHERN MOTOR CLUBS 2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the ACSMC. The association celebrated with a busy marshal training and awards presentation day at Brooklands Museum.
