CAUTION: Indicates a possibility that minor injury can result if instructions are not followed. NOTE: Gives helpful information. Labels attached to certain parts of the Mower give important safety information. Please read them carefully. Should a label detach itself or become illegible, contact your dealer for a replacement. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS A) TRAINING 1) Read the instructions carefully. Be familiar with the controls and the proper use of the equipment. Learn how to stop the engine quickly. 2) Only use the Mower for the purpose for which it was made, that is, the cutting and collection of grass. Any use not specifically indicated in the instruction handbook can be dangerous and result in damage to the machine, and will also result in the annulling of the warranty and the manufacturer declining all responsibility. 3) Never allow children or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the Mower. Local regulations may restrict the age of the operator. 4) Never use the Mower: - When people, especially children, or pets are nearby. - If the operator has taken medicine or substances that can affect his ability to react and concentrate. 5) Keep in mind that the operator or user is responsible for accidents or hazards occurring to other people or their property. 6) Do not carry passengers. 7) The operator of a Mower must carefully follow the driving instructions, particularly: - The need for care and concentration when using Mowers; - That control of a Mower sliding on a slope will not be regained by the application of the brake. The main reasons for loss of control are: - Insufficient wheel grip; - Being driven too fast; - Inadequate braking; - The type of machine is unsuitable for its task; - Lack of awareness of the effect of ground conditions, especially slopes; - Incorrect hitching and load distribution. 3

SAFETY RULES 8) The Mower is equipped with a series of safety micro-switches and devices which must never be removed, altered or tampered with. Removing these devices invalidates the warranty and the manufacture declines any responsibility. B) PREPARATION 1) While mowing, always wear substantial footwear and long trousers. Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearing open sandals. 2) 3) Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used and remove all objects which may be thrown by the machine (stones, sticks, metal wire, bones, etc.) Before using/always carry out a visual inspection, particularly of the blades, seeing that the screws and cutter assembly are not worn or damaged. Replace worn or damaged blades and screws in sets to preserve balance. 4) Take care as the rotation of one blade can cause the other blade to turn. C) OPERATION 1) Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. 2) Avoid operating the equipment in wet grass, where feasible. 3) Please consult machine operator s manual for details on operation on slopes 4) Remember there is no such thing as a "safe" slope. Travel on grass slopes requires particular care. To guard against overturning: - It is advisable to use a front counterweight (supplied on request); - Do not stop or start suddenly when going up or downhill; - Always keep the machine in gear, especially when travelling downhill; - Machine speeds should be kept low on slopes and during tight turns; - Stay alert for humps and hollows and other hidden hazards; - Never mow across the face of the slope. 5) Stop the blades rotating before crossing surfaces other than grass. When moving the Mower away from the lawn disengages the blades and put the cutting plate into the highest position. 6) Never operate the Mower as a lawn mower with defective guards, or without safety devices, for example deflectors and/or grass catchers, in place. 7) Before leaving the operator's position: - 8) Disengage the blades and lower the Mower. Disengage blades, stop the engine and remove key: - Before carrying out any work beneath the cutting deck or unclogging the chute; - Before checking, cleaning or working on Mower; - After striking a foreign object. Inspect the Mower for damage and make repairs before restarting and operating the Mower; - If the Mower starts to vibrate abnormally (immediately check and remove the cause of the vibration) 4

SAFETY RULES 9) Disengage drive to blades when transporting or not in use. Disengage the blades for them to stop before emptying the grass-catcher. 10) Stop the engine and disengage blades: a. Every time the grass-catcher is removed or replaced. b. Before making height adjustment. 11) Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times. D) MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE 1) Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition. Regular maintenance is essential for safety and for maintaining performance levels. 2) Allow the engine to cool before storing in an enclosed space. 3) Check the deflector and grass-catcher frequently for wear and deterioration. 4) For reasons of safety, do not use the equipment with worn or damaged parts. Parts are to be replaced and not repaired. Use genuine spare parts. Parts which are not of an equivalent quality can damage the equipment and be dangerous for your safety. 5) Wear strong work gloves when removing and reassembling the blades. 6) Check the blades' balance after sharpening. 7) Take care as the rotation of one blade can cause the other blade to turn. 8) When the machine is to be parked, stored or left unattended, lower the cutting means. 9) Before any maintenance or repair, remove the ignition key. 5

SAFETY AND INSTRUCTION DECALS Your Mower must be used with care. Therefore, decals have been placed on the machine, to remind you pictorially of main precautions to take during use. 19 OPERATION MOWER OPERATION IMPORTANT: Lack of operating knowledge can lead to accidents. Learn all Tractor and Mower controls and how they work. DANGER: To avoid personal injury: Do not operate the Mower without discharge flap. MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR MOWER 1. When using your Mower for the first time, choose a smooth level area and cut in straight and slightly overlapping strips. 2. The size and type of the area to be mowed will determine the proper mowing pattern. Take into account obstructions, such as trees, fences and buildings. To keep grass cuttings off fences, sidewalks, etc., it is advisable to go around the outside of the area to be mowed several times in a clockwise direction. To mow the area remaining, work in a counterclockwise direction so the cuttings are dispersed onto the previously cut area. 3. Always keep the left side "Trimming side" of the Mower toward trees, posts or other obstacles on the first trip around the obstacle. 4. Most lawns should be mowed to keep the grass approximately mm high. Best results are obtained by cutting often and not too short. To keep a green lawn, never mow more than one third off the height of the grass or a maximum of 25 mm in one mowing. For extremely tall grass, set the cutting height at maximum for the first mowing, then reset to the desired height and mow again. Allow the grass to grow to 75 mm, then cut off only the top. 5. On thick or springy or soft ground, the Mower wheels may sink into the ground giving too low a cut. Readjust the cutting height to obtain the desired height of cut. 6. For best appearance, grass should be cut only when it is free of moisture. WARNING: Some illustrations in the manual show the Mower with safety view. The Mower should never be operated with any safety shielding removed. Adjusting procedure Check and adjust the mower in the following procedure before starting its operation for smooth cutting operation. WARNING: Before starting adjustment, be sure to stop the engine and make sure that the cutting blade has stopped rotating. 1) Stop the tractor on a flat space and apply the parking brakes. 18

OPERATION 2) Lift the mower with the lift control lever of the tractor. 3) Stop the engine. 4) Adjust the front gauge wheel, rear gauge wheel and anti-scalp roller to obtain the desired cutting height. Refer to page 22 "CUTTING HEIGHTS" for the cutting height adjustment. 5) Lower the mower with the lift control lever on the tractor. 6) Check to see that all the gauge wheels touch the ground. If not, adjust the front link length. When adjusted correctly, the pin fixing the mower deck and front link can be easily pulled out. 7) Start the engine an lift the mower with the lift control lever of the tractor to the highest position. 8) Stop the engine. 9) Adjust the lift rod length so that the gap between the plate on the mower deck side and the stopper on the tractor side is about 5mm. (STM60D-318/324 only.) Figure 20 CUTTING HEIGHTS This Mower can be adjusted to cut from 25 mm to 102 mm high. Cutting heights should be determined by cutting conditions and personal preference. The following recommendations will provide a guide for height selection. Lawns Field cutting mm mm To change from one cutting height to another, it is necessary to adjust the gauge wheels and Anti-scalp roller. 19

OPERATION GAUGE WHEELS 1. Start the engine and rise the Mower by the hydraulic control lever. 2. Stop the engine, remove the key and apply the parking brake. 3. After determining the desired cutting height, as shown in Figure 21, remove the pin securing the gauge wheels and reinstall the pin in the desired position. 4. Make sure that the gauge wheels are secured. 25 mm (1") X-E X-E 34 mm (13/8") Y-F Y-F 42 mm (15/8") X-D X-D 51 mm (2") Y-E Y-E 59 mm (23/8") X-C X-C 68 mm (25/8") Y-D Y-D 76 mm (3") X-B X-B 85 mm (33/8") Y-C Y-C 93 mm (35/8") X-A X-A 102 mm (4") Y-B Y-B Figure 21 ANTI-SCALP ROLLER In some cases the Mower may scalp while cutting grass on rough ground at low cutting height. The anti-scalp rollers are adjustable. Set them at high position (A), when now less than cutting height (51 mm), and at low position (B) over cutting height (51 mm), Figure 22. Figure 22 20

OPERATION CUTTING SPEED For best mowing results, it is important that blades be run at maximum speed. Set engine throttle lever in full throttle position, thus providing proper blade speed and maximum engine horse-power. Choose a ground speed which will provide the desired finish cut, maximum operator comfort and will not overload the Mower drive. A slower ground speed will provide a smoother operating machine. UNEVEN TERRAIN WARNING: Be careful when operating Tractor and Mower on uneven ground. In extremely uneven terrain, the front weights of Tractor should be used to improve stability. Pass diagonally through sharp dips and avoid sharp drops to prevent "hanging up" of the Tractor and Mower. Practice will improve your skills in manoeuvering on rough terrain. Avoid sudden starts and stops when travelling up or down hill. Always mow down slopes, never up or across the face. Avoid operation on steep slopes. Slow down on sharp turns and slopes to prevent tipping or loss of control. GRASS DISCHARGE This Mower was designed to provide a strong discharge to scatter clippings and prevent clogging in heavy cuttings. When cutting lush, thick tall or wet grass shift to a slow ground speed setting and/or reduce width of cut to prevent possible belt damage. FOR BEST CUTTING DO NOT MOW WHEN GRASS IS WET. Wet grass will cause clogging and produce unsightly clumpings on lawn. WARNING: To avoid injury from thrown objects keep discharge flap in position and secure at all times. The under side of Mower should be cleaned out (sprayed with water) after operation with the engine stopped and blades not rotating. If Mower becomes clogged, back unit out of uncut grass and try to clear deck by engaging the PTO. If deck does not clear itself STOP engine, remove starter key and clean underside of deck using a stick or scraper. 21

OPERATION MOWING PATTERNS The proper mowing patterns should be determined by the size and shape of the areas. The typical mowing patterns are shown in Figure 23 through 25. Large Open Area (Figure 23) 1. Mow two or three rounds clockwise along the edges of the area. 2. Mow the lawn In half by mowing down the center. Then turn counterclockwise to the left at edge of area over grass previously cut. Figure 23 Small Area (Figure 24) 1. Mow two or three rounds clockwise along the edges of the area. 2. Mow counterclockwise to finish. Figure 24 22

OPERATION Uneven Area (Figure 25) 1. Divide uneven areas into sections. 2. Change mowing pattern regularly. Figure 25 NOTE: Mow counterclockwise when trimming around trees or bushes. 23

LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE GENERAL MAINTENANCE WARNING: To avoid personal injury, lower Mower to the ground, turn engine off and remove key before performing any maintenance. Always use personal protection devices such as eye and hearing protection when performing maintenance functions. To avoid personal injury, when completing a maintenance or service function, make sure all safety shields are in good condition and installed before placing Cutter-deck in service. Never work under equipment supported by the Tractor Lift arms or any other hydraulic device because it may drop if the control is actuated (even with the engine stopped) or in the event of failure. Always use a secure support for equipment which must be serviced while in the raised position. To avoid personal injury shut off the engine and wait until the equipment stops turning before servicing. The Mower should be serviced according to the LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE CHART on page 24. Check the blade bolts, blades and discharge deflector daily for damage or looseness; Make a general visual inspection of the Mower for loose or damaged parts. Check nuts and bolts periodically to insure against looseness caused by vibration or rough handling. Damaged parts should be repaired or replaced before using the Mower again. 25

LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE LUBRICATION GEAR BOX OIL Checking Gear Box Oil Level; Check the oil level every 25 hours. 1. With the Mower levelling position, and after the Mower has been stopped for a period of time, check the oil level at the oil level check port. Lubricate all fittings as shown on page Check all hardwares for proper torques. 5. Apply touch-up paint to prevent rust. 31

LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE 6. Check the gearbox oil level. 7. Repair or replace worn or damaged parts. It is not advisable to store your Mower in an area where it will come in contact with fertilizer fumes. Fertilizer fumes can damage your mower's paint finish. TROUBLE SHOOTING STREAKING: Leaving strips of uncut grass. Possible Causes: Deck not level side to side, dull blades, tip of blade not square, blade lift worn off, low engine RPM. Incorrect length of replacement blade, not enough overlapping between cutting rows, ground speed too high, belt slippage, wet grass, blade upside down. SCALPING: Blades hitting dirt or cutting very close to the ground. Possible Causes: Ground speed too high, rough terrain, deck mounted improperly, blade upside down, cutting too low, incorrect blade pitch, incorrect anti-scalp roller setting. STRINGERS: Occasional blades of uncut grass. Possible Causes: Low RPM, plugged deck, dull blades, ground speed too high, belt slippage, wet grass, blade upside down. UNEVEN CUT: Wavy appearance, high, low, high. Possible Causes: too much blade (deck) pitch, bent deck, uneven ground, deck mounted improperly, plugged deck, lift worn off blade, dull blades, bent spindle mounting area, bent blades, ground speed too high, wrong adjustment of weight transfer valve. STEP CUT: Clear ridges in grass height. Possible Causes: Deck not level side to side, tire pressures not equal, bent deck, bent blade, blade upside down, deck mounted incorrectly, wrong spindle assembly, internal spindle failure, bent spindle, wheels uneven. The following is a check list of possible causes. They are arranged in the best manner for eliminating any of the preceding problems. 1. Check that the deck is mounted correctly. The correct pins are positioned and properly fastened. 2. Blades should be sharp (see BLADE REPLACEMENT AND SHARPENING section) and mounted correctly Blades should be straight with cutting edge down. 3. Engine RPM. Unit must be run at full engine RPM. Reducing RPM slows blade tip speed which reduces the cutting efficiency of the Mower. 4. Tire pressure must be correct. 5. Ground speed should be at about an average walking pace, to suit height and density of grass. 6. The length of grass being removed should be no more than 1/3 the height of the grass before it is cut. 7. Clean out any accumulation of grass and debris from the underside of the Mower. 8. Check or readjust the weight transfer valve. 9. The conditions of the ground. Uneven ground may show scalping or uneven cutting. Raise the cutting height of the Mower. 10. Pitch or level of the deck and blades is incorrect. Check for proper adjustment of the gauge wheels and lift linkages. 32
