1 Society For American Baseball Research Baseball Records Committee Lyle Spatz, Editor August 2009 Not everything that counts is counted; not everything that is counted is worth counting. ---Albert Einstein PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES ~ BATTERS WITH MOST SEASONS This is Ev Cope s list of batters with the most seasons accomplishing various offensive benchmarks for the Philadelphia Phillies. The numbers are through the 2008 season. Splittorff pitched 15 years for the Kansas City Royals ( ). Ron also believes that Bob Lemon should have a footnote. Although Lemon spent 15 years with Cleveland, only 13 ( ) were as a pitcher. In 1941 and 1942, he played in five games each year, one as a 3rd baseman and four as as pinch hitter/pinch runner in each year. Paul Splittorff Bob Lemon

2 MOST CAUGHT STEALING IN A GAME BY ONE TEAM The Elias Book of Baseball Records (2009 edition, p. 103) lists the American League and post-1900 National League record for Most Caught Stealing, Game as 6. It s happened three times, once in the NL--Brooklyn caught 6 St. Louis Cardinals runners on August 23, and twice in the AL--Philadelphia caught 6 St. Louis Browns runners on May 12, 1915, and the A s also caught 6 Chicago White Sox runners a month later, on June 18, But thanks to Retrosheet's remarkable work on the 1920s, Jim Charlton came across another game in which 6 players were caught stealing. In the first game of a May 29, 1920 doubleheader, Philadelphia caught 6 Washington Senators to tie the record. MOST CAREER 20+GAME HITTING STREAKS This list, from Trent McCotter, includes the still active Ichiro Suzuki s 27-game streak in 2009) 8-Willie Keeler (45,26,26,25,25,25,24,21) 8-Ty Cobb (40,35,23,22,21,21,21,20) 8-Pete Rose (44,25,23,22,22,21,20,20) 7-George Sisler (41,35,26,25,23,22,21) 7-Ichiro Suzuki (27,25,23,21,21,20,20) 6-Pete Browning (26,24,24,23,20,20) 6-Nap Lajoie (31,23,23,22,21,20) 6-Tris Speaker (30,27,23,22,20,20) 6-Chuck Klein (26,26,25,22,21,20) 6-Paul Waner (23,22,21,20,20,20) 6-Stan Musial (30,24,22,20,20,20). LONGEST CAREER HITTING STREAKS BY FOREIGN-BORN PLAYERS From Trent McCotter 35-Luis Castillo, 2002, Dominican Republic 34-Benito Santiago, 1987, Puerto Rico 31-Rico Carty, 1970, Dominican Republic 31-Vladimir Guerrero, 1999, Dominican Republic 30-Sandy Alomar Jr., 1997, Puerto Rico 30-Albert Pujols, 2003, Dominican Republic 30-Willy Taveras, 2006, Domican Republic 29-Dick Higham, , England 29-Mel Almada, 1938, Mexico Luis Castillo DUSTY RHODES Peter Ridges thinks that the late Dusty Rhodes holds one record that may never be broken or tied: In the 1954 World Series Rhodes, of the Giants, had three games where he did not start, but still managed at least two RBI. No-one else has had more than one such game in a single World Series: Carl Furillo is the only player with two games like that--both with Brooklyn-- one came in 1947 and one in The Giants swept the Indians in 1954: Monte Irvin started all four games in left field for the Giants, but Rhodes pinch-hit for him in the first three games, then did not play in Game 4. In six at-bats, Rhodes hit two home runs and drove in seven runs. The other Giants had 124 at-bats, zero home runs and 13 RBI. No-one else on either team had more than three RBI or one home run.

3 RETIRED BATTERIES WITH 40 OR MORE STARTS TOGETHER WITHOUT A SHUTOUT This list, courtesy of Walt Wilson, is part of an ongoing project. Walt expects he will find other batteries to add. Note that Hall of Famer Grover Alexander made 64 starts with Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett without throwing a shutout. A DECADE-BY-DECADE LOOK AT HIT BY PITCH TOTALS This data comes from Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, though Juan says credit should go John Dewan s Stat of the Week. A look at the decade-to-decade changes seems to indicate that contrary to popular opinion, pitchers of the past twenty years do throw inside, and of course the current decade is not yet over.
