WEST CHAMPIONS: The Rangers clinched the 2016 A.L. West Division title on 9/23 at OAK, the club s 2nd straight and 7th A.L. West championship overall, most of any A.L. West team since 3-division play began in 1994 (6--LAA/OAK; 3--SEA) the only other A.L. clubs with at least 7 division titles since 1994 are NYY (11) and CLE (8 including 2016). Overall, it will be the Rangers 8th trip to the postseason, the 5th in the last 7 years ( ) STL (5) is the only other team with as many as 5 playoff appearances since 2010 with DET and NYY both at 4 entering 2016 this is Texas 4th division title in the last 7 years and only DET (4) and LAD (4) have as many in that span. Texas clinched the A.L. West title on 9/23 in its 154th game of 2016, matching 2010 for the fewest games in team history ever to clinch either a division title or playoff spot. WELCOME TO MY HOUSE: With last night s win, the Rangers secured homefield advantage for any postseason series in which the club will play this year, as the A.L. champion will host the World Series due to the junior circuit s 4-2 win in the 7/12 All-Star Game in San Diego last night s win ensured Texas of at least a tie for the A.L. s best record, but the Rangers hold tiebreakers with the 2 teams that could match for best record: CLE (won season series 5-games-to-2) and BOS (season series tied 3-3, but Rangers hold better record in intradivision games). Texas has held homefield for just 3 multi-game postseason series in club history (exlcuding 2012 WC Game), winning all 3: 2010 ALCS vs. NYY (4-2), 2011 ALDS vs. TB (3-1), and 2011 ALCS vs. DET (4-2) team is 1-6 all-time in series without homefield advantage Texas has lost 3 straight games and 4 of 6 in postseason in Arlington, but has won 6 of 10 and 9 of the last 16 at home. STILL SOME MEAT ON THE BONE: Texas has ensured at least a tie for the A.L. s best record this season, a franchise first Rangers could secure the league s best record outright by winning either of its last 2 games, or with one loss for both BOS and CLE with one win, Rangers would tie the most wins in franchise history (96 in 2011), and winning each of last 2 games would set a record in that category Rangers also have a shot at matching franchise record at 31 games above.500 (see below). WINS AND LOSSES: The Rangers beat the Rays last night, 3-1, and now have a 3-1 record on this 6-game, 7-day homestand to end the regular season against MIL (2-1) and TB (1-0) Texas has won 3 straight, 5 of 7, and 7 of last 10, and finished September with a record club has also won 20 of 31, 22 of 34, 26 of 41, and 32 of the last 50 games team is (.635) since 7/23, 2nd-best in ML to CHC at.688 (44-20), and is since 5/20 at (.594), Texas has the best record and most wins in the A.L., 2nd in ML in both categories to only the Cubs (.642, ) 95 wins rank T2nd-most in club history ( ; ) 2016 is Texas 7th winning season in last 8 years (beginning 2009 every year but 2014), one of just 5 ML clubs to accomplish that feat to date (LAD/NYY/STL/SF). HIGH-WATER MARK: The Rangers are currently a season-best 30 games above.500 this is just the 3rd season for the club to reach 30-over, and just the 7th day overall in franchise history to be 30-over or better the others: Sept. 28, 2011 (96-66 to end season), and Sept. 27-Oct. 1, 1999 the high mark in franchise history in a season was 31-over on both 9/28/99 (94-63) and 9/30/99 (95-64). IN THE LEAD: The Rangers have a 9.0-game lead in the A.L. West club s 10.5-game lead on 9/24 matched a season high (also 9/3) and tied 2nd-largest league/division lead on any date in franchise history to 11.0 games, 9/30/10 after a win vs. LAA the club has led by at least 8.5 games for 31 consecutive days current 9.0-G lead is largest in A.L. and 2nd-best in ML to the Cubs (+18.5 GA) Texas has had share of 1st for 148 days, sole possession for 139 days club has held 1st for 124 consecutive days beginning 5/29. CRANK THAT: Yu Darvish recorded a season-high 12 K s last night in his 100th career start, matching the most by a Ranger in 2016 Elias Sports Bureau notes that Darvish has 812 strikeouts through 100 career starts, easily a major league record, 46 more than Chris Sale (766) in his 1st 100 starts it was Darvish s 28th career game of 10+ SO, 2nd in club history (34-Nolan Ryan) and 2nd-most in ML history over a pitcher s 1st 100 games (31-Dwight Gooden) he also became the 3rd pitcher in club history with as many as 12 SO in an outing of 6.0-or-fewer innings, joining Matt Perisho (6.0 IP, 12 K on 10/3/99 at LAA) and Nolan Ryan (6.0 IP, 14 K on 7/25/89 vs. TOR). SHUT IT DOWN: Four Texas relievers combined for 3.0 shutout innings to finish last night s win, extending a streak of club-record 29.2 consecutive scoreless innings for the Rangers bullpen Elias Sports Bureau notes that the streak is 2nd-longest for relievers in WSH/TEX franchise history, as the Senators had a stretch of 35.2 scoreless innings in April Relievers have an A.L.-record 41 wins in 2016, tied with the 1953 Dodgers for most in MLB history. ODOR AGAIN: Rougned Odor hit his 33rd HR of the season last night, breaking a tie for the team lead with Adrian Beltre (32) Odor s 33 HR are the most by a Ranger since 2012 (Josh Hamilton-43, Beltre-36), with that duo being the only batters with more than 33 HR for the club since 2006 Odor has homered in at least 2 straight games for a 5th time in 16. DYSON AT 38: Sam Dyson recorded his 38th save last night, 3rd-most in the A.L. and T7th-most in club history it is the highest single-season saves total by a Ranger since Joe Nathan had 43 in 2013 Dyson s 73 appearances are the most by any Texas reliever with more than 35 saves in a season. BELTS: Adrian Beltre has RBI in 3 straight and 5 of the last 6 games to bring his season total to 104, 3rd-most in any season in his career (121 in 2004, 105 in 2011) has also reached his 13th season with 30+ doubles, T7th-most all-time the list of 9 players with 13 seasons of 30+ doubles: 16-Tris Speaker/Stan Musial; 15-Ty Cobb/Pete Rose; 14-George Brett/Craig Biggio; 13-Paul Waner/David Ortiz/ Beltre.
