1 NAVY SPORT BASEBALL NAVAL ACADEMY TRADITIONS ANNAPOLIS The City of Annapolis has been home to the Naval Academy for all but four years since the founding of the school in 1845 on the grounds of what originally was the Army s Fort Severn. The Academy moved its location to Newport, Rhode Island, from during the Civil War. BRIGADE OF MIDSHIPMEN The 4,300-member student body at the Naval Academy is called the Brigade of Midshipmen. Those officers entering the Marine Corps have the choice of service selecting one of the following fields... Aviation -- air command and control, anti-air warfare, aviation maintenance, aviation supply, pilot, naval flight officer Ground -- armor, artillery, communications (information systems), engineering, financial management, infantry, logistics, military police NAVY With the selection to go into the Navy, graduates are commissioned as Ensigns. Graduates of the Naval Academy entering the Navy have the following service options available to them... Aviation -- flight officer, pilot Nuclear Propulsion -- ships, submarines Restricted Line and Staff Corps -- civil engineering, cryptology, intelligence, maintenance, medicine, meteorology/oceanography, supply Special Operations -- explosive ordinance disposal, explosive ordinance management, mine countermeasures, operational diving and salvage Navy SEALs Surface Warfare -- conventional, nuclear powered Submarines 56

2 NAVY NAVY BASEBALL SPORT SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM ANCHORS AWEIGH Anchors Aweigh was written by Lt. Charles Zimmerman, musical director of the Naval Academy, in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles 06 as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game and when the Mids won, the song became traditional at the contest. Stand Navy down the field, Sails set to the sky, We ll never change our course, So Army you steer shy. Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh, Sail Navy down the field, And sink the Army, sink the Army Grey BILL THE GOAT The first recorded use of a goat as the mascot for Navy teams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (the Chief) was presented to the Brigade by officers of the USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 win over Army that year and a goat became the permanent mascot of the Academy in BLUE & GOLD The USNA alma mater was written in 1923 by Cmdr. Roy DeS. Horn, USN (Ret.) with music composed by J.W. Crosley. Following every home athletic competition, the athletes face their fans with their hands on their hearts and sing the following words: Now, colleges from sea to sea May sing of colors true; But who has better right than we To hoist a symbol hue? For sailors brave in battle fair, Since fighting days of old, Have proved the sailor s right to wear The Navy Blue and Gold 57

facilities in the East to play and watch a game.

4 2010 NAVY BASEBALL The $2.5-million renovation process at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium commenced in October 2005 and featured a variety of upgrades that makes the home of Navy baseball one of the finest facilities in the East to play and watch a game. The multi-million dollar baseball facility is named after the longtime baseball coach Max Bishop ( ) and the Terwilliger family for their generous support of the Naval Academy and the Naval Academy Athletic Association. The facility s biggest improvement was the installation of a new playing surface, as the natural grass was dug up and 124,000-square feet of FieldTurf was put in January FieldTurf is the same surface used by Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays, as well as Navy's Jack Stephens Field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium became the third field in college baseball to feature FieldTurf over the entire playing surface, with the exception of the pitcher's mound and home plate. Washington State's Bailey-Brayton Field, Louisville's Jim Patterson Stadium, Kansas State s Tointon Family Stadium and Oregon State s Goss Stadium at Coleman Field are among the select others that feature an all-fieldturf playing surface. In spring 2008, Navy s newly constructed 5,000-square foot, heated indoor hitting and facility was dedicated to Navy baseball coaching great Joe Duff ( ). The 50-foot wide, 100-foot long, 16-foot high indoor facility features two pitching mounds and a state-of-the-art hitting screen. The Pro Batter Professional PX2 Video Pitching Machine allows hitters to bat against a simulated pitcher with several different pitches and a wide range of velocities. The roof of the hitting and pitching facility has been surfaced with railings surrounding its perimeter, serving as a hospitality venue that provides an outstanding view of the entire ballpark and the Naval Academy. Several dedications also took place around the facility in spring Navy s team meeting room in the FitzGerald Clubhouse was dedicated in honor of Andy Frahler 48, the only two-time team captain in program history and captain of Navy s first NCAA Tournament team in The first base dugout, formerly Navy s home dugout, was dedicated in honor of the baseball team captains that played for Max Bishop from The third base dugout, currently Navy s home dugout, was dedicated in the memory of Lt. Christopher T. Fay 87. The dimensions of the outfield fences around Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium remained the same after the renovation process. The ballpark measures 323 feet down the left field line, 382 feet to the power alley in left-center field, 397 feet to center field, 372 feet to the gap in right-center field and 304 feet down the right field line. In addition, several improvements have been made in and around Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium to help make Navy baseball a fan-friendly ballpark. Concurrent with the field transformation, 1,000 chair-back seats were installed with brick archways surrounding the stadium. Behind the left field fence, one can find a state-of-the-art LED matrix scoreboard with a video screen. Additionally, a concession stand located on the concourse level behind home plate and a patio area help create an intimate surrounding to watch and enjoy a Navy baseball game. 59

5 NAVY SPORT BASEBALL U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY MAJORS Naval Academy students can select one of 43 different majors within 19 fields of study, grouped into three divisions: Engineering and Weapons (aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, general engineering, mechanical engineering, Naval architecture, ocean engineering), Math and Science (chemistry, computer science, general science, information technology, mathematics, oceanography, physics, quantitative economics) and Humanities and Social Science (economics, English, history and political science). In addition to graduating with a Bachelor's of Science, students can attain a minor in one of seven different languages. SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Midshipmen annually compete for several prestigious scholarships. Since Navy's first Rhodes Scholar, E. Van Meter ('28), 45 Academy graduates have received the Rhodes Scholarship (12 since 2001), with former baseball player Trevor Thompson ('05) among the most recent awardees. Twenty-three grads have been awarded Marshall Scholarships, including 13 since Swimming standout Kelly Zahalka ('09) received both a Truman and Marshall Scholarship while at the Academy. ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS Midshipmen student-athletes have earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 69 times over the years, garnering 36 awards since The honorees included first-team honorees Lizzie Barnes (women's soccer) and Kelly Zahalka (women s swimming), as well as third-team selections Nathan Durham (men s swimming) and Mark Van Orden (men s track & field) GRADUATION SUCCESS RATE For the fourth straight year, the Naval Academy remains at the head of the class for graduating NCAA student-athletes. Navy graduated 100 percent of its athletes in 11 of 19 NCAA sports reported on with no sport graduating less than 95 percent. SPORT NAVY NATIONAL AVG.
