Study Island Copyright 2018 Edmentum - All rights reserved. Generation Date: 01/29/2018 Generated By: Justin Crittenden Amelia Earhart wasn't afraid to break down barriers. In 1928, she was the first woman to fly as a passenger across the Atlantic Ocean. Then, in 1932, she became the first woman to pilot a plane across that ocean. There weren't many female pilots back then, and her actions inspired other women to follow their dreams. This was especially important because there were few career choices available to women at that time. Amelia Earhart has inspired generations of women to do things that had never been done by women before. 1. Based on the paragraph above, how did many women likely feel after Amelia Earhart's transocean journey? A. scared of flying B. jealous of Amelia Earhart's accomplishments C. proud of their fellow woman D. afraid of being drafted into the air force The Right Dog Roy looked in each cage at the shelter. Then, he went back to the start and looked at each one again. He felt like this was the most important decision he would ever make. Today, he would pick out his own dog. It took a long time to get his parents to agree to get a dog. Roy told them that he was more responsible now that he was in middle school. He got everything ready for a dog at his house. He used his own money to buy some food and made a doggie bed out of a box and some old towels. Now, Roy just needed the perfect dog. Roy kneeled down in front of a small beagle. The dog s head drooped a little, and it looked at Roy with sad eyes. The animal control officer saw Roy trying to pet the beagle. He may look a little sad right now, Officer Kody said, but that dog s got a playful streak that will come out when you get him out of here. I ll tell you what, why don t I let him out so that you can play with him. Roy's face brightened, and he stepped back so Officer Kody could open the cage. As soon as the cage cracked open a couple inches, the beagle pushed its way out and began running around the room. Officer Kody tried to go after the beagle, but it was too fast. It slipped behind cabinets, toppled the trash can, and jumped at the other dogs still in the cages. It even managed to get behind Officer Kody and jumped on the back of his
legs. Roy felt like his face would burst from laughing so hard. Come here, boy, Roy said as he slapped his knee. The beagle stopped running for a second when it heard Roy calling. A big, goofy grin came on its face as it headed for the boy. It jumped on Roy s chest, knocking him backwards. A big, wet tongue began licking his face. Roy giggled as he tried to get the dog to stop. Here s the leash, kiddo, Officer Kody said. Good job getting him to come to you. Roy was able to get the leash around the dog s neck. The duo ran around outside, and Roy knew this was the fun-loving dog that he had to take home. He went to find his mom, who was waiting in the main office. Did you find one that you like? she asked. Yep. I think I'll name him Kody. 2. In the story, Officer Kody claims, "that dog's got a playful streak that will come out when you get him out of here." Which statement from the story supports this claim? A. "The dog's head drooped a little, and it looked at Roy with sad eyes." B. C. "He used his own money to buy some food and made a doggie bed out of a box and some old towels." "It slipped behind cabinets, toppled the trash can, and jumped at the other dogs still in the cages." D. "Then, he went back to the start and looked at each one again." In the United Kingdom, children play a game called rounders. In Ireland, it s known as cluichee corr. The game dates back to the reign of King Henry VIII, so it is at least 400 years old. Although it is normally only played by children today, in 1884, the Irish formed a professional league. In 1888, the British formed another professional league. The game consists of innings. In each inning, the teams take turns trying to score points, known as rounders. To score points, a team must hit a small ball with a stick into the field which is manned by the opposing team. Before a ball can be hit by the batter, it has to be pitched into play by a member of the opposing team. Each batter receives three good pitches, and if the batter does not swing or misses the final good pitch, then he or she is out. When the batter does manage to strike the ball, he or she must run past three bases before returning home to score a rounder. The opposing team attempts to tag the batter with the ball before he or she can complete the round. If the batter is tagged with the ball, it is counted as an out. After three outs, the teams switch sides. After both teams have had a turn at bat, the game moves to the next inning. Though rounders may sound familiar to North Americans, it is most certainly not their pastime of baseball. The Norman French brought rounders to the British Isles in the 11th century AD in the form of a game called la soule. However, even la soule is different from rounders. It is believed by many sports historians that even the French game wasn t the original game. These historians think that the Romans were playing a similar bat and ball game in the first century BC!
3. Which of the following statements about rounders is most likely true? A. Rounders is a game that is exactly like the American game of baseball. B. The Romans created the game of rounders over two thousand years ago. C. Children in the United Kingdom invented rounders over four hundred years ago. D. Adults in Ireland and Britain played rounders during the late nineteenth century. Making the Grade Greg Collins planned to study the night before the big social studies test, but things just seemed to get in the way. First, he needed to take his dog Bones out for a walk. Then, he messaged his friends on his computer. Soon, it was time for dinner. After that, he watched his favorite television show. Before he knew it, it was time for bed. "Lights out," said his mother, peeking in on him. "Okay, Mom," he groaned. No more studying for him! When he got to school the next day, he dragged his feet into Mr. Robertson's social studies class. The big test would be first thing in the morning, and he just knew he was going to fail. Groaning, he opened the door and discovered his classmates in a tizzy. "We've got a sub," one boy whispered, pointing to the elderly woman, with big glasses, standing grumpily behind Mr. Robertson's desk. "Now we can all copy off each other's papers during the big test." Greg smiled for a moment, as his friends composed hasty cheat sheets and wrote notes on their desks. As soon as the bell rang, the substitute handed out the tests, then waddled back to her desk, and buried her nose behind the morning paper. Greg's smile disappeared when he saw his classmates whisper answers, use hand signals, and refer to tiny cheat sheets. Greg began to fight an inner battle. He knew that he didn't deserve a good grade on the test just because they had a sub who was more interested in the sports page than the class. It was tempting to just join his friends and copy the answers, but Greg kept his eyes on his test. He knew whatever grade he got would be the grade he earned. 4. What can be inferred about the other students from reading the story? A. They like to help new teachers. B. They study hard for every test. C. They want to make high grades. D. They want to copy Greg's test. Nicolaus Copernicus Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Torun, in a nice home on St. Anne s Street. The year was 1473, and life in Europe was hard for most people. Famine and harsh winters were normal, and many children and peasants went hungry. Because of his father s wealth as a copper merchant, Copernicus was sheltered from these hardships. Sadly, his father died when Copernicus was a boy, and soon after, he went to live in the palace of his uncle, the Archbishop of Warmia. His
uncle took Copernicus under protection and saw to his education and career. As a young nobleman, Copernicus excelled in mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. After graduation, Copernicus returned home to Warmia. He enjoyed a position of wealth from which he used his education and wits to aid his fellow citizens in times of need. During his early career, he wrote several books on law and business. When another country invaded Warmia, Copernicus was in charge of his city s defenses. Despite his life as a public servant, Copernicus always maintained his interest in astronomy. This interest in astronomy led to problems for Copernicus later in life. Despite the great discoveries of the Renaissance, it was believed by almost everyone that the Sun orbited the Earth. As an older man, Copernicus disagreed with others on this belief. After many years spent studying, he published a book demonstrating that in fact the Earth moved around the Sun. The Roman Catholic Church was outraged by Copernicus book, and banned it. Because of this controversy, it would be many years before Copernicus ideas came to be widely accepted. 5. Which sentence from the article best shows that although Copernicus was respected for his accomplishments, he still faced challenges? A. "Despite his life as a public servant, Copernicus always maintained his interest in astronomy." B. "The year was 1473, and life in Europe was hard for most people." C. "Famine and harsh winters were normal, and many children and peasants went hungry. " D. "Because of this controversy, it would be many years before Copernicus' ideas came to be widely accepted." Born in Massachusetts in 1775, Laura Ingersoll had a tough childhood. Her mother died when Laura was 9, and her father soon remarried. Her father was a public official and an officer in the army. He spent most of his time at work. As the oldest child, Laura would have been expected to help raise her younger brothers and sisters. In time, Laura s father heard the Canadian government was offering land to settlers. Canada at that time was still a part of the British Empire. After what must have been a difficult decision, her father moved the family to Ontario. Two years later, at the age of 22, Laura met and married James Secord, a Canadian with strong ties to the King of England. After the wedding, Laura and her new husband moved away to another town. Unfortunately, arguments were growing between the United States and Great Britain. Eventually the arguing led to war. In 1812, the United States army invaded Canada. Laura s husband James joined the army, yet was soon wounded in battle. He returned home to recover. While he rested, the Americans occupied Laura's new town. The American army forced Laura to quarter some soldiers in her home. One day, while serving a meal for American officers, she overheard them discussing plans for an attack. The Americans expected to take the British army by surprise and destroy it. This would allow them to drive the British from Canada, and possibly cause Laura s new country to lose the war. Laura felt she had to do something. That night, she left her husband alone and snuck out to warn the British army. As she was leaving, an American guard stopped Laura and demanded to know where she was going. Thinking quickly, Laura told the guard that she was going to milk a cow. The
American believed her, and she was able to slip away. The journey was long and difficult. Laura had to avoid American scouts. She traveled many hours in the dark before stumbling into a camp of Native warriors. Luckily, the Natives were friends of the British. They gave Laura shelter then led her to the British camp. With the help of Laura and the Natives, the British ambushed the Americans and defeated them. Laura s new home was safe. Though she received little reward for her devotion and bravery, Laura Secord still is considered a folk hero by many Canadians. 6. What is the most likely explanation for this sentence from the passage? After what must have been a difficult decision, her father moved the family to Canada. A. The Ingersolls were worried about the challenges of frontier life. B. Her father did not want to leave the grave of his first wife. C. Her father had served his country as a soldier and official. D. Moving from one city to another is stressful and complicated. 7. The Republic of Texas achieved its independence from Mexico in 1836, the same year as the famous siege of the Alamo in which pioneers Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett were slain. The "Lone Star State" was the 28th state to join the Union, admitted in The name Texas, like many things in Texas, comes from a Mexican name. It means "friends" or "allies." Texas is the second-largest state in the Union in area, after Alaska. Based on the paragraph above, what can you speculate about Texas today? A. The influence of Mexican culture is still evident. B. Mexico is attempting to regain control of Texas. C. Most Texans are from Mexico. D. Texans are still at odds with Mexico. 8. What is the best meaning of the sentence from the passage? The American army forced Laura to quarter some soldiers in her home. A. The American army forced Laura to nurse soldiers back to health. B. The American army forced Laura to provide clothing for soldiers. C. The American army forced Laura to give shelter to soldiers. D. The American army forced Laura to give information to soldiers.
9. What is the best explanation for Laura's motivation to warn the British? A. Laura was only interested in saving her husband's life and felt this was the best way. B. Although Laura was new to Canada, she still thought of herself as an American. C. Laura's father had taught her a deep respect for the military and she wanted to help. D. Laura felt a stronger bond to her new home of Canada than the country of her birth. Louis Braille was born in France in His father was a craftsman who had a workshop with many tools for his job. One tool in his workshop was an awl. It was a tool with a pointed tip that could punch holes in leather and wood. When Louis was three years old, an awl pierced his eye while he was playing in his father s workshop. After this accident resulted in a serious infection, Louis became blind. Though he could not see, Louis was successful at many things. He made good grades in school, played the organ and cello, and had many friends. The one thing he felt left out of was reading. He was a curious student who wanted to enjoy the knowledge found in books. There were a few books with raised letters at his school, but they were hard to read. Louis thought there should be a better system that would allow people to run their fingers quickly across a page. He wanted to be able to read as quickly as people with sight. At 15 years old, Louis worked hard to make a code that blind people could feel on the page. For ideas, he studied codes used by the military. Finally, he created a writing system that used raised dots. Each letter can have up to six dots. The placement of the dots is unique for each letter. It took some time for Braille s system to catch on, but now it is the main language blind people use for reading. Even with the invention of audio books and recordings, many people still use Braille to read books today. 10. Based on the selection, which statement about Louis Braille is most likely true? A. He had a hard time learning music. B. He thought reading was important. C. He liked audio books and recordings. D. He created codes for the military.

Answers 1. C 2. C 3. D 4. C 5. D 6. C 7. A 8. C 9. D 10. B Explanations 1. The passage states that Earhart's "actions inspired other women to follow their dreams;" therefore, it is safe to speculate that many women were proud of their fellow woman. 2. Officer Kody thinks the beagle will have a playful streak when he gets out of the cage. The officer is right. As soon as the beagle gets out, he begins running around causing trouble. The beagle shows that it really is a playful dog. 3. Read the first paragraph of the passage carefully. It says, "Although it is normally only played by children today, in 1884, the Irish formed a professional league." It also says, "In 1888, the British formed another professional league." If the British and the Irish formed professional leagues in the late 1800s, adults in Ireland and Britain most likely played rounders during the late nineteenth century. 4. The other students in the class cheat on the test so that they can make a high grade. Getting a high grade is so important to them that they are willing to do anything even something that they know is wrong. 5. The sentence shows that despite his efforts and work to share his knowledge, Copernicus' discoveries would not reach the people until many years after his death. This would have been extremely disappointing to a scholar like Copernicus. 6. The first paragraph explains how Laura was born shortly before the American Revolution, a war in which her father Thomas had fought. Later, the passage explains that Canada was still part of the British Empire. Thomas would be moving his family from a country he had fought for to a country he had fought against. 7. It is safe to speculate that the influence of Mexican culture is still evident in Texas today; after all, the very name of the state comes from a Mexican name. That's a lot of influence!
8. From other sentences in the passage, you can conclude that this sentence means Laura had to provide meals and shelter to soldiers. The next sentence in the passage explains that Laura served a meal to American officers later. This was something she would do if she was giving shelter to them. Also, Laura's entire town of Queenston was occupied by the Americans. Most likely, other citizens were also forced to care for American soldiers in the same way. 9. Laura was worried most about what might happen if the Americans were able to defeat the British. This demonstrates that she cared more for the success of her new country than the success of her old country. 10. Louis Braille felt left out when it came to reading. He wanted to "enjoy the knowledge found in books" and to read more quickly. He worked hard on his code so that blind people would have a way to read quickly and easily.
