With 8 of our coyotes participating in this event it promises to be a great show for our club. Look for the coyotes white running jerseys to be present at this event. Americas Finest City Half is also the third of the Triple Crown of Half Marathons and two of our coyotes are hoping to finish this race in order to complete the task of the triple crown. The Half Marathon begins at Histor- Cabrillo National Monument, with its majestic view of both San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, follows scenic San Diego Bay and Harbor Island along the Embarcadero to the Star of India, winds through downtown San Diego, and ends in beautiful Balboa Park. The race starts at 7:00 A.M. and it is usually followed by a nice Coyote Breakfast T.B.D Good Luck to Steve Edwards, Jeff Weeks, Monica Lewis, Alberto Saenz, Omar Santa Barbara Triathlon Zurita, Tom Gal, Eduardo Argueta and Alfredo Zepeda on this race and make us proud in obtaining your triple crown medals. It's unique distance gives athletes a great opportunity to step it up and test their speed on a longer course. The generally calm ocean swim leads way to a deceptively challenging bike course and solid run course. The swim consists of a 1 mile ocean swim that follows a straight forward rectangle along the shore. The 34 Mile bike ride is a spectacular bike ride that starts and finishes with a flat section along the beautiful santa Barbara coast line, but has a very technical and challenging middle section. The 10 Mile run is mostly on a bike path, but it does passes through some private residential streets and has a couple of very challenging hills. This year we have one of our coyotes participating in this event. Glenn Kaplan is a local favorite, having the support of his parents that live there, this will be very familiar territory for our coyote who has participated in this event in numerous occasions. He will be looking to improve on his time and set a PR. This will Santa Barbara Triathlon August 23, 2008

3 Ironman Coeur d Alene results Ironman Coeur d Alene took place on June 22nd. The water temperature days prior to the race was in the low 50 s, luckily for them come race day, the water warmed up to a nice 60 degrees, making it ideal for Tim Wilson, the only coyote to take part in this beautiful race. Tim made it out of the water with a very respectable time of 1:12:32, got a quick transition and started the bike portion of The triathlon, everything seemed to be in order until the dreaded mile 80 of the bike came upon him, he was doing very good in his vintage bike until the bike gave out due to its old age. Tim was getting ready to crank up a hill when he noticed that his rear derailure was making funny noises, so he looked back and started to notice that pieces of the derailure where starting to come off and slowly hitting the pavement as he kept riding, only to find himself without a rear derailure couple of minutes after. Faced with a single gear and over extended chain, he pondered turning back and calling it a day, but with true warrior attitude he decided that he would continue the challenge even if it meant walking up the hills and free wheeling the down hills. This fiasco lasted about 45 minutes until finally someone from the race crew spotted this limping coyote and was able to somewhat help him. They where able to get him one gear and one gear only, so he had a fix bike to go through the remaining 32 miles and tackling some pretty nasty hills. He was so trilled to hit T2 and start the marathon, because he knew that at this point there was no denying him from the coveted IRONMAN title. Tim improved on his marathon run by 1:00 hr over last years IM. Tim YOU ARE AN IRONMAN. Page 3
4 Carlsbad Results The Carlsbad Triathlon took place on July 13th, 2008 and we had two coyotes representing. competing shortly after his return from ironman France. He was one of the first ones out of the water and continued to push on the bike and run, he looked good the entire day and was actually happy to finish in a Congratulations to both of our coyotes for incredible performances and for representing the Monica Lewis 1:38:45 In the female division Monica Lewis came very close to cracking the top 10 in her age group with a finish of 11th, this has only lit the fire for the up coming races. 5 Coyote Good Samaritan Award So Wednesday one of our Coyotes, Steve El morro Grande Wiesner did an act of goodwill that needs to be recognized amongst all of us. He did something that not many of us would have done and we are grateful that the outcome was the way it turned out. Please read below for the story of what happened and his good Samaritan actions. From Steve Wiesner I have to tell you a true road biking story that happened over the weekend. Sorry it's soo long. But, it's an alert to all who are training out in public... So, I was out riding the Santa Ana Trail, feeling safe that it's off the street away from cars. Cruising along on my side of the paved bike lane. Enjoying the ride, this guy without his helmet passes me on a nice red bike, with his long blonde hair blowing in the wind. I appreciate his speed, being young and free. Not a minute later this other biker with long black hair Steve Wiesner is coming back in the opposite direction of me and is in my lane really going hard throwing the bike to the left and right as he pedals. I have to move out of the path to let him through. Right behind him is that first guy I mentioned with the long blonde hair. But this time his eye is black and blue, nose broken, mouth is spitting blood, so much so that it is pouring blood down onto the front of his jersey. It's horrifying as he is running at top speed on his hard bike shoes and screaming that guy hit me and stole my bike!!! Chills run down my body as I pass by him. I stop my bike thinking I have to do something. So, I turn my bike around and ride up along side of the running man and ask him how did this guy hit you? "With his fist;" he says. "Did he have a gun or weapon?" "No gun, but you gotta help me get my bike back I don't know what I'd do if I don't have my bike. Please help me get my bike back." "All right!" I say (with a loud roar deep inside me) "I'll go get your bike!" As I ride off, he cries- "watch out!...he's got a knife!" So, I speed off like I've never rode before, the lion inside me is raging and pushes me faster. About a mile later I can't believe that I caught up to the attacker. I say out loud; "that is not your bike, give it back! I don't want to fight you, just get off the bike and walk away!" He turns around and is really suprised. He starts to slow down and I notice that the guy next to him on a mountain bike slows down too. There are two of them! Oh no! I first thought there was only one attacker with no weapon, now there's a knife and now there are two assailants. So, I ride on and keep pleading for other people along the bike path to help me stop the theif. I must have passed by five groups of people with all sorts of looks, but no one helps. Typical, no one wants to get involved. Well, I think I'm on my own. So, I continue to ride following him and calling out. The attacker starts to slow down and speed up, slow down and speed up several times. I keep my distance because of his knife and I call out to him, "I could ride all day and I'll easily be able to follow you!" I yell that he is not going to get away with this crime. He quickly veers off the trail with his buddy. His buddy on a mountain bike jumps the curb and crosses McFadden Street in Santa Ana, a double laned road in both directions. The attacker tries to ride the stolen road bike over the curb, but his tennis shoes slip off the small clip-on pedals of the Page 5
6 Coyote Good Samaritan Award (Cont.) stolen bike. Down he goes! Bike falling in one lane, attacker sliding off the bike into the next lane of in-coming traffic. I steer my bike over to the drive way, not over the curb (hey, gotta take care of my Cannondale system 6!) and now I'm right on the fallen stolen bike. I stick my foot down onto the fallen stolen bike back wheel and claim- "I've got this bike just walk away. It's over!" I demand. The attacker gets up mad and slowly starts to walk toward me. He's reaching behind his back for the knife! He looks around and sees his buddy is all ready across the street and headed down the side walk away from us. Another truck veers around him. "Zoom!" The attacker keeps walking toward me... one more look around... and he bolts! He's running away from me. "Aha!" I grab the fallen bike and pull it off the street before a semi-truck crushes it. As I roll it along the sidewalk back to it's rightful owner and bleeding victim. I notice a guy talking into his shirt, he's saying; "it's a a guy with long black hair wearing a black t-shirt, they are travelling East on McFadden..." I tell him to get back on his bike and ride, follow them. "Let's get them!" So, he takes off. As I deliver the stolen bike to the rightful owner. Police helicopters fly over head, about twenty cop cars drive by in all directions. The bloody victim is shaking and crying thanking me profusely. He doesn't know what he'd do without his bike. He says he could buy another Ipod, but not another bike like this! So, the police come to ask for all the info on the attackers and what happened. I overhear one of the witnesses yell his story with exuberance; "this huge guy (me) rode so fast like Armstrong and he was so big like Shaquille Oneil and grab the bike like a small basketball!" The firemen paramedics come later to clean up the victim. The firemen after hearing some of the stories walk over and pat me on the back saying "You the man!" "...you got those bad guys!" "...nice job!" So, I politely ask the police officer in charge if I could go now. I'd like to bike home before it gets dark and have dinner with my wife if it's okay. He gets in front of all the crowds of people now surrounding us and takes me into his cop car. He says he'll have his best man watch my bike. He asks me if I could addentify the attackers from inside the tinted glass of the cop car. The cops caught them a couple of blocks away. The attackers took off their pony tails and one is wearing his hair all bushy and both took off their black shirts. One is pretty muscular with lots of prison type tattoes. He looks Samoan, a lot bigger and stronger than I had anticipated. I got lucky we didn't fight. The other guy is wearing a white t-shirt. It's kinda confusing. The cop tells me that suspects sometimes change their appearance right before they are caught. The cop pulls the hair back away from the Samoan face. Yep, that's they guy. And the other baby faced guy was with the attacker. of the firemen said he wears mace with him attached to his shirt when he rides. So, I bought pepper spray for me and my wife. So, I could go on. But one thing the cop told me afterwards is that crime is up! Be more careful out there. One Congratulations to Steve El Morro Grande Wiesner for stepping up for what he believes in and trying to help an innocent guy get back his personal belongings and his loving bike.
