1 SCENE 1 - Introduction - At home one Saturday morning, it's still a bit dark - Dad (Davie) tells Tom to go out and get bread for breakfast - Tom decides to take his bike so that he isn't late for football Tom opens garage & gets his bike out... Tom closes garage and looks around, thinking "Hmm, it's still a bit dark..." What should he do? 2.1 Head off quickly - it will be daylight soon anyway Options 2.2 Go back into the house to get lights and stuff WELL DONE Cycles off. Not seen, gets hit by a van, over handlebars, head smashes onto the ground Rollovers: Grab lights WRONG Get fluorescent jacket Grab helmet 3.2 WRONG only two or less items picked Cycles off. Van overtakes safely, displaying Tom with his fluorescent jacket & backlights WELL DONE Local bakers is shut so he needs to cycle off to supermarket, which is a mile out of town. SCENE 2

2 SCENE 1 Text for right/wrong screens 2.0 Options Wrong! You should have grabbed your lights and a fluorescent jacket from the house - the van couldn't see you in the dark. And a helmet would have protected your head Well done! It's still quite dark and you need to make sure you can be seen. Take time to find everything you need for safe cycling, even if you're in a rush. 3.2 Wrong! Take another look around - is there anything else you should get? Well done! The van driver could easily see your lights and fluorescent jacket, and your helmet will protect your head if you fall off. SCENE 2

3 SCENE 2 - Tom rides along a hilly road to the supermarket out of town. On arrival he has a choice of taking shortcut along pedestrian walkway straight to the front of the store, or following the road round the car park around the supermarket. 2.1 Go the long way round 2.2 Take a shortcut along the path straight to the front of the shop follows the road round the car park WELL DONE Lock bike? knocks into windowcleaner's bucket, he falls off ladder, cyclist veers into mother with trolley, baby and groceries spill out WRONG 3.1 Locks bike to bike rack.. Buys bread successfully WELL DONE It's daylight now. Tom needs to get home quickly for breakfast. He rides out of the car park towards the road 4.1 Drive straight out onto the road (its now light and cars will see you) 3.2 Lean the bike on the shop window - you can keep an eye on it that way. 4.0 Options 3.3 while paying the bike gets knicked WRONG 4.2 Stop, look left & right, indicate, and pull out carefully Cycles onto main road. Not seen, gets hit by a car - ambulance WELL DONE Cycles off safely WRONG SCENE 3

4 SCENE 2 Text for right/wrong screens Well done - you kept off the pavement and avoided an accident Wrong! Cycling on the pavement can be dangerous Well done! Always lock your bike to something secure when you leave it unattended Wrong! It only takes a second for someone to steal a bicycle. And it's probably not insured if you didn't lock it. It's a long walk home! 4.0 Options Wrong! Never assume a car will spot you - always wait until there's no traffic coming before you pull out Well done! You took the time to stop, look and listen and pulled out carefully. SCENE 3

SCENE 3 - On the road back home, and mobile phone in pocket rings. 2.1 Slow down and stop first to answer the phone 1.0 Options 2.2 answer phone while cycling 2.1.1 WELL DONE 2.2.1 cyclist wobbles and crashes into a parked car 2.

Nasty accident Car behind Tom slows down after indication WRONG WELL DONE SCENE 4

6 SCENE 3 Text for right/wrong screens Wrong! Never use your phone while cycling - you can't concentrate on both at the same time and may end up crashing Well done! You were right to make sure you were safely off the road before checking your phone Well done! Better to miss your friends than to end up dead - always take care when moving out into the traffic Wrong! You should have looked behind you and indicated before moving out towards the middle of the road. SCENE 4

SCENE 4 - Meet up with friends. One has just bought a big new mountain bike on ebay. It's cool! He offers it to you to try out.

Tom cycles home safely & has breakfast with his family End

The roads can be dangerous, so it's much better to stick to your own bike which you know is safe NOTE If your shoe laces are loose they can get stuck in the chain wheel, and that can lead to a nasty accident. Best to use a double knot. And make sure your trousers aren't flapping around either! End
