For The Life Of Your Bike Taking Care of Your Bike Whether you ride once a month or every day, regular bicycle maintenance will pay off in easier pedaling, crisper shifts, increased efficiency, and more cycling enjoyment. You'll go further, faster, and have more fun doing it. Routine bicycle maintenance is easy, fast, and can actually be fun. At Finish Line, we make all the cleaning, lubing and specialty items you ll need to take care of your bike. This guide will cover the main areas of your bike and how to care for them. For even more information or questions, visit our web site at or stop into your local bike shop. Clean Keep your bike running and looking like new by cleaning it regularly. The easiest way to do this is by using an all-over bike cleanser, like Finish Line s Super Bike Wash. Spray the cleanser all over the bike, let it sit for a minute or two, and gently hose it off. Shake-dry your bike by bouncing it a couple times and then wipe it down with a rag. Squirt a little lube on the key points and you re done. Clean your bike after every serious ride; this minimal effort provides maximum benefits. Lube Lubing a bike is quick, easy, and if done regularly, will result in a smooth, quiet riding bike. It will also shift crisply, making it a real joy to ride. For maximum lubrication benefits, apply fresh lube to clean parts. Lube Points (as applicable): Chain: on each link s joint and side plates Derailleurs: on the pivots and internal springs Brake Arm: pivots and cables Levers: internal pivots, springs, and cables Choose a Lube Type (that fits your riding style and conditions) Wet lube for wet, rainy, long distance rides. Dry lube for clean performance, dry or normal conditions. Wax lube for the cleanest, driest lube performance. Protect A clean, polished bike has less wind drag, looks better and lasts longer. To keep your bike looking like new, use Finish Line s Teflon Bike Polish. It s quick and easy: just spray it on, then wipe it off. It polishes and protects, leaving a high-gloss shine that repels dirt, mud and grime. Your bike will stay cleaner, longer. This minimal effort will keep your bike riding and looking like new. Shop Tune-Ups: Over time your bike is going to wear and loose its crispness... this is normal. Regular maintenance will keep your bike in top shape, but there is nothing like a tune up done by a professional mechanic at the shop to bring your bike's performance back to like-new. We recommend that you treat your bike to a thorough bike shop tune up once a year. for the life of your Bike

DuPont s metal-bonding Krytox lubricating film in combination with specialized waxes make KryTech super slick and longer lasting. Perfect for dry, dusty conditions. Because parts stay clean, they will work better and last longer. Available in 2oz. or 4oz. bottles, and 1 quart or 1 gallon jugs. Finish Line 1-Step, Cleaner & Lubricant Engineered for commuters and recreational cyclists who seek a quick one-step 'clean & lube' formulation. Special anit-rust additives prevent rusting in the most severe conditions - excellent treatment for storing bikes over the winter. To Clean Chain: Spray on and wipe grime off with a rag. To Lube Chain: Spray on and do not wipe off. Available in 12oz. aerosol.

Tech Tips Cleaning Your Chain: Keeping your chain clean is important! Dirt, grime, and sand can accumulate and turn into a grinding paste. In short order, your chain will wear itself and other drivetrain components to a point of no return. These expensive components are key to your cycling enjoyment and efficiency. Keep the chain clean and it will last a long time. The easiest way to clean your chain is with a chain cleaner that clips onto the chain without need for its removal (pg. 10). This takes less than five minutes. Clean your chain every 5-7 rides. Chain & Derailler Note: You can also clean your chain by either spraying it with bicycle degreaser and wiping it down with a rag or by using Finish Line s Grunge Brush tool (pg. 10). Lubing Your Chain: A well lubricated chain will deliver crisp shifts, quiet riding and maximum cycling efficiency. Lube your chain every 2-3 rides. Lube your chain by back-pedaling and dripping or spraying lube onto the chain before it passes over the smallest rear gear. Cleaning Your Derailleurs and Gears: Pay particular attention to the derailleurs pivots and springs. Bicycle degreaser and a brush will remove any grime and dirt from inside the derailleur. Clean between the gears, front and back, by using a brush or by flossing between them with a rag. Derailleurs should move smoothly through their full range of motion without any stiffness. For maximum lubrication benefits, cleaning should be done before re-lubing. Note: The cleanliness factor of your derailleurs is key. Your derailleurs hang out where they pick up all kinds of debris. Keep them clean and they will perform better and last longer. Lubing Your Derailleurs: Your derailleurs are just as important as your chain in helping to deliver those crisp, exact shifts that make cycling a true joy. The derailleurs shift your chain by using a system of springs and pivots. It is important to keep these springs and pivots well lubricated. They will require a shot of lube every 5-7 rides. Note: Gears (sprockets) do not require any special lube application. The gears receive sufficient lubrication from the chain, as it runs through them. Excessive lubricant on the gears will attract dirt and eventually degrade the performance of your drivetrain components. Finish Line does not use any ozone depleting propellants in any of its aerosol products. Finish Line is a leader in formulating products that are safe and eco-friendly.

Cleaning and Degreasing Products Super Bike Wash Squirt it on, let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes, then hose it off or wipe it off." 7 Tech Tips Lubricating Your Cables: Smooth operating cables are the life lines that keep your braking and shifting system working optimally. There are a variety of ways to lubricate your cables, from removing them, to just shooting a little lube into the ends of the cable housings. Depending on how much wet weather riding you do, your cables will require different amounts of attention. You should inspect and lube, if necessary, every 4-6 rides. Note: When it is time for a thorough cleaning and re-lubing of your cables, a trained mechanic should tackle the job. Unless you are experienced in removing your own cables, you can easily spend a few hours getting everything readjusted properly. Cable Lever Hub Lubing Your Brake & Shift Levers: All brake and shifter levers work by using springs and ratchets that arc on pivots. You will need to lube your levers every 6 months. Cleaning: A squirt of bicycle degreaser, a quick scrubbing with a brush, and/or wipe with a rag, should do it. If mud and sand have worked into the heart of your brake and shifter levers, have a trained mechanic tackle the job; disassembly and reassembly of these components can be quite complicated. Lubing: Run your levers through their full range of motion while squirting a little lube into the pivot joint. Caring for Front and Rear Hubs: Some hubs have open bearing assemblies, with only a dust shield between them and the elements. You ll need to routinely inspect these types of hubs. In general, clean and regrease them every 4 months. Carefully disassemble the hub and clean with Citrus BioSolvent or EcoTech Multi Degreaser. Inspect all components, watching for pits, cracks, or flat spots in the ball bearings and race surfaces. Replace any damaged parts for a significant improvement in performance. Generously apply Finish Line Premium Bicycle Grease to the bearing and race surface, then reassemble. Adjust bearing cones so hubs run smooth and free with no side-to-side or up-and-down play. Always check the adjustment after the wheel is installed, quick release compression can further tighten-up the bearings and you may have to leave them slightly loose before installing the wheel to compensate. Note: Many hubs now feature sealed bearing assemblies. Just keep their outer seals clean with an occasional rag wipe. Don t spray water or degreaser into your bearings.

Anti-Seize Stanchion Lube Suspension Oil Brake Fluids Grease Teflon Bicycle Grease Reformualted in 2006 to exceed the unique and demanding requirements of bicycle bearings. Super Slick and Teflon fortified. This synthetic grease coats ball bearings and races, preventing wear and distortion in headsets and bottom brackets, even in down hill racing and over extended periods of time. Chosen since 1988 by more top pro teams as the slickest, toughest bicycle grease available. No matter how hard or long you ride, Finish Line grease will provide the lubrication your bearings require. Available in 3.5oz. tube, 1 lb. tub or 4 lb. pail. High Performance Brake Fluid Two new high performance brake fluids. Mineral Oil based for Shimano and Magura and an advanced DOT formula for the rest. Formulated specifically for bicycle brake systems to provide maximum fluid life and optimal braking performance. The DOT Fluid is 100% compatible/mixable with DOT 3, 4, and 5.1 systems and fluids. Both fluids use low viscosity oils with high viscosity indexes which means excellent performance over the widest range of fluid temperatures. Finish Line brake fluids typically improve brake line response for quicker lever action and pad retraction. Available in 8oz. bottle. Shock Oil Premium suspension fluid formulated specifically for all oil damped bicycle forks. 100% compatible with all suspension designs and seals. Will not thicken or thin due to changes in temperature. Low foam technology delivers consistent and predictable damping in all riding conditions. Available in 16oz bottle. 2.5wt., 5wt., 7.5wt., 10wt., or 15wt. Stanchion Lube A pure fluoropolymer oil so slippery it improves the surface slip of Teflon-coated surfaces. Fluoropolymer oil also works great to recondition and protect rubber seals and o-rings. Apply to fork stanchions to eliminate stiction and rejuvenate seals. Also use to lubricate inner cable wires and component pivots. Includes: 15g bottle, felt pad, extension straw. Bicycle Assembly Anti-Seize Lube Prevents cold welding, galling, and seizing of metal to metal contact parts, especially those subject to extreme pressures and moist conditions such as bolt threads, seat posts, pedals, bottom brackets, etc. Use on all metals, especially titanium, aluminum, specialty alloys, and magnesium. Available in 3-pack of 6.5cc sachets or a 8oz. brush cap can.

Tech Tips Bottom Bracket: Bottom brackets, (B.B.s) are the bearing and spindle assemblies that your pedal crank arms spin upon. Because of their low and central location, they are constantly being exposed to the worst of contaminants. Many B.B.s feature sealed bearing assemblies. However, it does help to keep an eye on their outer shields and keep them as clean as possible, by wiping away any crud with a rag. Also, do not spray pressurized water directly at the shields. Note: Some B.B.s utilize semi-sealed or non-sealed bearing assemblies. They should be cleaned, inspected and regreased about every 6 months. This job requires special tools, so don t cheat and use a hammer and/or pipe wrench. You ll end up ruining your bottom bracket and they re not cheap to replace. Headset Maintenance & Adjustment: Thanks to modern technology, headsets are quite easy to adjust. A loose headset is extremely annoying and will quickly disintegrate. Adjust your headset so it s smooth, yet tight, with no front and back free-play. Check for free-play by applying the front brake and rocking the bike back and forth. You should feel no play coming from the headset bearing assemblies. Clean, inspect, and regrease your headset once a year. Note: To properly adjust and tighten a headset you may need to purchase a headset wrench. It s not too expensive to buy at your local bike shop and could save you from damaging and having to replace your headset, a much more expensive alternative. Bottom Bracket Headset Stem Seat Creaking Stem: Sometimes, the handlebar stem will creak. This is usually caused by one of two things: either dirt that has worked it s way down between the stem and the fork s steerer tube or the stem has come slightly loose. To fix this, loosen the stem, remove it from the steerer tube, and clean it using Citrus BioSolvent or EcoTech Multi Degreaser. Reassemble to correct torque specification. Note: Some high-end stem mounting designs may require special tools or unique reassembly torques. Check with your local shop if you have any questions. Grease Your Seat Post: Apply a thin layer of Finish Line Premium Grease to your seat post, where it slides and mounts into the frame. This will keep the seat post from seizing up inside the frame over time and allow future adjustment Seat Height Adjustment: Use a low seat adjustment for more control during fast downhill riding. Use a high seat adjustment (with a slight bend in the knee) for efficient, long distance pedaling.

Tech Tips Braking Performance: Glazed, hardened, dirty, or misaligned brake pads account for nearly all loss of braking power problems. Keep the surface of your brake pads clean and fresh by using sandpaper or steel wool to scuff away any debris, and hardened glaze. Check the alignment. The pads should be toed in about 1/8 to first make contact with the rim at its front half. Pads should contact the center of the rim, and never rub the tire, or hang off the rim. Clean and inspect your brake pads every month. Brake pads are easy to replace. A new set makes a big difference. Regularly clean your rims with Speed Clean. Your brake pads will work better and last longer. Disc Brakes: Whether cable or hydraulic, disc brakes offer the best of braking performance. Many of these systems can be quite expensive and complicated so we suggest that you always have them serviced at your local bike shop. Here are some tips to keep your disc brakes in peak working order. Clean any accumulated dirt and glaze from the rotors with Speed Clean. Immediately replace any pads that become contaminated, chipped or broken to avoid damaging the rotor and to maintain braking power. When wheels are removed from the bike, do not activate the brake levers, this can cause the pads and pistons to fall out of the calipers. With hydraulic systems, if the brake lever bottoms out, this indicates air in the system or a leak. Stop using the brakes immediately and bring them to a mechanic as soon as possible to avoid further damage. Be sure to discuss the unique needs of your disc brake system with your dealer before your first ride. Brakes Quick Release Comfort Quick-Release: The rear quick release lever should have a tightly closed handle that runs parallel to the chainstay. The front lever should be pointed up, tucked next to the fork. These positions will prevent a glancing blow, from accidentally opening the levers. On quick release (Q.R.) equipped wheels, adjust the bearings so they're slightly loose before installing the wheel - the pressure of the locked Q.R. will tighten them up. Once installed, your wheels should spin freely, with no side-to-side play, or frictional grinding/popping sounds. Your bicycle dealer can show you how to properly use and tension the levers. Note: If your bike has disc brakes, make sure to position the Q.R. levers on the opposite side from the brake rotors - this will keep the torque generated under full braking power from loosening the Q.R. levers. 11

What People Are Saying... A clean, well-lubricated chain is essential for long life and efficiency. A dirty chain will destroy itself, the sprockets, and cause rougher gear changes. David Leslie, The Mountain Bike Book The chain needs to be kept clean and well lubricated to utilize your energy most efficiently, shift smoothly, and maximize chain life. Lennard Zinn, The Art of Mtn. Bike Maintenance A cyclist s most important ally is the lowly, but all powerful lubricant. The high quality of Finish Line products have made them the choice of most professional cyclists and teams. David Kansas, Velo News...clean and lubricate the chain after every off-road ride. A dirty chain causes slow gear changes and increases wear. John Stevenson, Mountain Bike Maintenance and Repair If the chain is really grimy, consider using a snap-on chain cleaner like Finish Line s Chain Cleaning Kit. Jim Langley, Bicycling Magazine Finish Line focuses on bicycle maintenance and their products really work. I use and recommend Finish Line to all my students. Vance Bloom, Director, CABDA Bicycle Mechanics School Finish Line makes the best products we've found in many years of racing activities with Pro Teams. Take for example the Cross Country Wet Lubricant, this wet-style lubricant allows riders to pedal with the maximum power transmission for over 280 km with no loss of efficiencies. There are no equals in the market. Chief mechanic at Pro Tour LAMPRE-FONDITAL Team, Italy We use the full line of Finish Line products. Their quality is unsurpassed. I always use either Teflon Plus Dry Lube or Cross Country Wet Lube for the chain and gears, depending on the weather conditions.
