2 Itinerary Overview Explore the back passages and shimmering waterways of the most remote areas of Southeast Alaska s Inside Passage. Navigating the waters by small ship allows us to reach rarely seen areas where spectacular scenery and pristine beauty abound at every turn. From the comfort of our expedition vessel we encounter wildlife at eye level, meet native Alaskans, and enter some of the world's deepest fjords under massive glaciers, hike on wilderness trails and kayak from serene anchorages in isolated coves. The world's largest mammals, the great whales, migrate here and orcas are often found foraging in the bountiful waters along the sheltered coastline. Our expedition naturalists provide exciting interpretation and presentations about Alaskan wildlife, natural history and geology. Enjoy kayaking among icebergs, hiking far-off trails, stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, polar bear club swims and observing marine wildlife, bird watching, and glacier walks. 3 Itinerary in Detail DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN JUNEAU Welcome aboard! After meeting your crew and settling into your state room, join your fellow travelers in the common room for drinks and a welcome dinner. Please be sure to arrive in Juneau no later than 2:30pm. [D] DAY 2: ENDICOTT ARM AND FORDS TERROR The sculptural glacial views and snowcovered mountain views of Endicott Arm will take your breath away! Endicott Arm is over 30 miles long and ends at the glowing blue of Dawes Glacier. Grab your camera and see it all from the ease of a kayak or skiff. You'll likely spy harbor seals and their pups lounging on "bergy bits" in the water. Tides permitting, explore the narrow passageway of Fords Terror, marveling at its towering walls, the waterfalls spilling down them, and the mountains that frame the skyline. [] DAY 3: STEPHENS PASSAGE Make the most of today!! As your captain navigates through Southeast s remote fjords, watch for whales humpback and orca are frequent residents of these waters. Perhaps you ll hike through an other-worldly, landscape of hanging waterfalls and every shade of green, or kayak and paddle board into the wild inner reaches of a salt chuck a tidal salt-water lake keeping a lookout for bears, heron, moose, mink, and harbor seals. [] DAY 4: THOMAS BAY & WRANGELL NARROWS Step into the back country of Alaska's wilderness, in an area known for glaciers and rich in gold and quartz. Explore glacial landscapes marked by moraines, muskegs, and mud. Adventure and natural beauty are sure to please whether you choose kayaking, paddle boarding, skiff riding, or hiking today. After dinner, marvel at the sights as we turn toward Wrangell via the Wrangell Narrows, and are guided by over 30 bright red and green navigation lights, locally known as Christmas Tree Lane. 4 DAY 5: WRANGELL, CHIEF SHAKES TRIBAL HOUSE Today is all about native culture, wildlife and wonder. Brush up on your Tlingit culture at Chief Shakes Tribal House for native storytelling and visit Kiksetti Totem Park on Front Street to view recently carved totem poles and hear their unique story. The afternoon offers some of the most scenic kayaking of the trip along the 5-mile Canoe Pass. End the day with a soak in the hot tub or watch a DVD movie as the vessel cruises toward the Behm Canal. [] DAY 6: BEHM CANAL Wildlife abounds in Behm Canal and surrounding Tongass National Forest Orca, porpoise, seals, black bears, mink, eagles, and otter. Paddle along the canal or venture out on an intertidal shore walk or low-elevation hike on the Cleveland Peninsula. [] DAY 7: MISTY FJORDS NATIONAL MONUMENT Watch the sun rise over the steep and sometimes sheer walls of the Misty Fjords National Monument Area, a haven for ducks, brown and black bear, mountain goats, Sitka deer, mink, moose, river otters and other marine wildlife who ply the waters of Behm Canal and the inlets. Glide through Walker Cove by kayak (close-in or long distance) and stop at shoreline beaches to stretch your legs. Or explore it all by skiff, soaking in the splendor of this largely forgotten corner of the world. Man the rope swing, race around the ship and show off with a platform dive, if you dare. This evening, you will be greeted with cocktails as you join the captain in a farewell toast. Then reminisce about your Alaskan journey over a sumptuous Alaskan seafood and prime beef dinner. After dining we gather to talk and share our video footage on the lounge's flat screen TV's. [] DAY 8: KETCHIKAN DISEMBARK A bon voyage breakfast ends our journey; however there are many enticing ways to extend your journey from here. A flight or helicopter tour over the Juneau Ice Field, trekking over Mendenhall Glacier or consider joining us for the return trip from Ketchikan to Juneau on our entirely different itinerary through the equally beautiful Western Coves. Please schedule your departure no earlier than 11:30am. 6 Accommodations WILDERNESS EXPLORER, DISCOVERER AND ADVENTURER These three nimble ships offer three accessible decks fully equipped for comfort and action. Guests enjoy over the top views from the bow or from the under-the-stars in the hot tub. The 60-guest Adventurer The 76-guest Discoverer On the Main Deck, the galley is equipped to prepare a variety of fresh cuisine with plenty of Alaskan seafood, as well as special dietary requests including favorite dishes for kids and young adults. Large picture windows in the dining area allow you to enjoy the scenery and watch for wildlife while you dine. All cabins feature private bath with shower, an ipod docking station, and a flat screen TV/DVD monitor to view daily activities or to watch your favorite movie from the library. Each vessel has a hydrophone for listening below-surface as well as a bow-mounted underwater camera that pipes the action to the lounge and your cabin TV for a unique wildlife experience. A PA system connects your room directly to hear the captain's announcements for activities or the on-board naturalist's alerts for wildlife sightings. The main lounge evokes the character of a National Park lodge and a quaint neighborhood pub featuring select northwest beers on tap, wine and other spirits. The Lower Deck on the stern is the activity center complete with an EZ Dock launch platform designed for easy loading of kayaks, stand up paddle boards and inflatable skiffs for hikers going ashore. This is especially comfortable for novice kayakers who will appreciate the stability of slipping into their kayak and getting fully prepared on deck with the crew's assistance before they launch you at water level. Also onboard are hiking poles, yoga mats and fitness equipment. With covered and open area the Observation Decks provide plenty of space for viewing wildlife and scenery or just lounging. 10 Booking your Wildland Adventure HOW TO RESERVE A TRIP You can book online using our Reserve a Trip form or by calling Your space on a trip is confirmed once we receive your reservation form and initial trip deposit. All travelers must sign and submit a Release of Liability. Deposit requirements are as follows:* $1000 per person for all trips in Alaska. *Some trips require additional non-refundable deposits, especially when yachts have been chartered, or if permits to visit archaeological or wildlife sites have been purchased in advance.
