Participants, Families and Support Staff, I can t believe 2018 is coming to an end. What a year it has been for Pathways to Opportunity. It was such a pleasure to watch our choir and skits classes perform at Festival of Trees. Everyone did an outstanding job! We have several new exciting classes for the Winter quarter starting January 7th and we will be working towards our goal of supporting 75 adults per day throughout As I mentioned in my last letter, we have been working on new partnerships in the community. Pathways to Opportunity will be serving as a Host Site for Best Buddies. Applications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis for our participants to buddy up with college students from FSW and Keiser University. If all the spots fill up, you can still participate as an Associate buddy and attend the group events. Applications will be sent out soon to sign up. We also will be working very closely with Special Olympics Florida to offer evidence based curriculum in our classes. Winter quarter will be offering the following courses to start Fit 5, Walking Club, Health and Wellness, and Gardening Club! Special Olympics will be providing a Tower Garden for our Gardening Club to use on site. Lastly, I want to remind everyone that program will be closed December 24th, 25th, and 26th, as well as January 1st and 2nd. Please be sure to take a look at the 2019 Closure Schedule located in the newsletter. From all your Pathways to Opportunity staff, we wish you and your family a Happy Holidays! Cheers to a wonderful past year and a remarkable new one! All the best, Megan Feeney Director of Disability Support Services Page 3

Interview With CEO Rick Evanchyk Written by Journalism Team We had the honor and privilege of interviewing our exiting CEO Rick Evanchyk here at Pathway s Pattern. We are excited to share our interview!! 1.What is your favorite memory at Goodwill? Mr. Evanchyk said his favorite memory was hard to pin point. He said he has so many over his 15 years with the company but he finally settled on the people we helped through the mission. He remembered a veteran that was helped through the housing apartments. The gentleman was able to live independently for the first time. He no longer depended on his son to help him get in an out of his trailer because the apartments through Goodwill are accessible for people with physical disabilities. He grinned from ear to ear talking about this memory. 2.What will you miss the most? Here was a quick answer. He said the staff without a pause or a blink. He said it did not matter the position a person held we as Goodwill employees all were helping with carrying out our mission. 3. What was your biggest accomplishment at Goodwill? Mr. Evanchyk thought a second about this one and then said this facility. He said he came across this building by accident in a sense. He was not wanting to shop and he found himself sitting with strangers and it just fell into his lap. He said the next day he came and found that the building was perfect for our needs. Before this building that is over 100,000 sq ft we were located in a building that was 20,000sq ft. If it was not for this building we could have had 3 different sites. 4. What is your hope that will continue in your legacy at Goodwill? This answered warmed our hearts here at Pathway s Patterns. He said that he would hope that programs like ours would continue to grow and even expand to other counties. His hope was for this program to reach Collier and Charlotte counties. He also wanted to see the company to continue to grow. When he started here the company had 250 employees now can you believe it is more than triple that! He also said that he is only a phone call away to make sure that everything continues to grow and do everything the mission needs us to do. 5. What are your plans for the future? Can you believe this man wants to give more back to the community by teaching Business Management at a college!! We know he would be a great professor and offer a lot of knowledge to his students! Thank you sir for taking the time for this interview and all you have done for the company and us!! Page 4

BEGINNERS WORKOUT By: Michael and Kailyn Page 9 * Please read and follow each of the exercise descriptions for proper form and safety. We here at Pathway s Pattern want you healthy and safe! 1. Squats Stand as tall as you can with your feet spread shoulder-width apart. Bend at the hips to lower your body as far as you can by pushing your hips back and bending your knees. Pause for 1-2 seconds, then push yourself back up to the starting position. Continue for the prescribed number of repetitions before moving on to the next exercise. 2. Jumping jacks Stand with your feet together and your hands down by your side. In one motion, jump your feet out to the side and raise your arms above your head. Immediately reverse that motion by jumping back to the starting position. 3. Push-Ups Get down on the ground and place your hands on the floor under your shoulders. Extend your legs behind you. Your body should form a straight line from head to heels. Keeping your back flat, bend your elbows to lower your chest towards the floor. Pause for 1-2 seconds then push back up to the start. Do reps 4. Reverse Lunges Start by standing with your feet hip-shoulder width apart and hands at your hips. Take a large step backward with your right foot into a reverse lunge position. Lower your body until your right knee almost touches the floor. Returning to the standing position by pressing your left heel into the floor and bringing your right leg forward. That's one rep. Do reps, then switch sides and repeat. 5. Dips Position yourself up onto a bench, chair or step as long as it is stable and secured to take your body weight. Hands should be shoulder width apart fingers facing forward and elbows pointing backwards with a slight bend in the elbows. Extend your legs out in front of you with a slight bend in the knees. Slowly lower your body until your shoulder joints is below your elbows. Push back up until your elbows are nearly straight. Do not lock the elbows. 6. Plank Start by lying face down on the floor and prop yourself up on your forearms and toes, with your body forming a straight line. Now contract your abs and your glutes as tightly as you can and hold this position for seconds.

NEW YEAR S GOOD LUCK FOOD Page 7 By: Samantha Black Eyed Peas The black-eyed pea is a staple dish in southern United States and they are considered good luck because of its penny-like shape. Traditionally, the dish is served on New Year s Day in a recipe called Hoppin John. When the dish is served as a leftover the day after New Year s, it is call Skinny Jenny. Corn Bread Another southern United States New Year s Day good luck food is Cornbread. Because of its yellow color, which resemble the color of gold, cornbread is thought to bring extra luck. Extra kernels are usually added to the cornbread at this time to resemble golden nuggets. Lentils Italy and Hungary are big into the lentil bringing good luck and fortune. A very popular New Year s Day dish in Italy is Green Lentils & Sausage, the green lentil symbolizes fortune. In Hungary, as the lentils soak in water and expand, it symbolizes the growth of wealth. Greens You can pretty much guess why leafy greens are known to bring good fortune and cash throughout the year. This lucky food extends all over the world from South America to Europe. Superstition has it that the more greens you eat, the more wealth you will gain. Even if you don t believe that, they are super healthy, so eat away! Pork In many countries, including Cuba, Spain, Hungary & Austria, pigs symbolize progress. This good luck belief is probably because pigs can t walk backwards. Also, their feeding habits push food forward as they eat. Therefore, many people around the world eat pork and/or pork shape foods on New Year s Day as good luck that the new year will bring much progress! Pomegranate The pomegranate is considered a good luck food for many reasons, its red color symbolizes the heart, denotes life and fertility and represents health. It is considered a good luck food in Turkey and often eaten on New Year s Day. Its abundance of seeds also represents prosperity.

New Year s Cleaning Tips Page 10 By: Hope and Kimberly This month at Pathway s Patterns we are trying to cover some of the basic New Year s Resolutions and to be cleaner and more organized is one of the number one things we learned though some research. Here are some tips that might help you accomplish this: Manage the mail. Even in our age, most people still get plenty of snail mail. Open it over a wastebasket or recycle bin so that anything unwanted quickly disappears. Roll back the bed. Replace fussy bedspreads with a duvet and duvet cover. The duvet itself makes bed -making easier. For cleaning, just pop off the cover and launder. It s faster and easier than washing a bulky comforter. "Sweep" the house nightly. Just before bedtime, do a walk-through. Put newspapers in the recycle bin, toss out the junk mail, put dishes in the dishwasher, hang up coats, sweaters, towels, etc. and put away anything that wandered out during the day. Remove shower scum as you go. A daily shower cleaner will keep shower and tub surfaces free of soap scum, mildew stains and hard-water deposits. Enlist everyone in the household to mist the surfaces immediately after they shower, while the walls are still wet and warm. Double up. A full set of cleaning supplies on each floor of the home keeps them in easy reach for spot cleaning. Baskets for all. Be sure there s a wastebasket in every room. Empty them as part of your nightly sweep. Tote em. Keep cleaning supplies in a plastic carry caddy so they re easy to tote from room to room. Invest in some baskets. Baskets in varying sizes are great repositories for toys, magazines, keys, remote controls, unopened mail and other everyday items that tend to take over countertops and tabletops. Vacuum on the run. A small, hand-held cordless vacuum makes quick pick up a snap. Consider multiples one in the kitchen, one in the garage, one on each floor in the house.
