1 Fall 2013 Jeremy Rich, Principal Letter from the Principal Fall has come and gone and winter is just around the corner! November is a quick month with conferences and Thanksgiving taking almost a full week of school. CENTRAL VALLEY CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Barringer Road Elementary Parent News As a few key reminders: There will be no school on November 11th in observance of Veteran s Day. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on November 15 th, 18 th, and 19th. Students will be dismissed at 11:50 each day. Thanksgiving recess is November 27th through November 29th with the children returning to school on Monday, December 2 nd. As a result of the aforementioned, there is only one full week of school in the month of November. As always, thank you for your continued patience as we redefine ourselves as a newly formed district. Please be reminded that school starts at 8:00 and children entering past 8:00 will be considered late. Also, please inform the office staff of any address changes or phone number changes. Equally important, if your child is absent, upon their return they need to have a written excuse to give to their teacher in regards to the absence. Finally, according to our BOE policy, no dogs are allowed on school property during school hours unless there is a physical need to have the dog. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. The last few weeks in October, we had to test all of the students in various areas to establish base line data that will be used throughout the year to provide data driven instruction. 2 Nurse Notes Should I send my child to school or stay home? GREEN LIGHT Good to go FEVER: Your child is good to go if he is over 4 months old, has a temperature below F, is receptive to drinking fluids, and doesn t appear to have a personality transplant. VOMITING: She s heaved only once in 24 hours. It s not likely she has an infections, nor is she at risk for dehydrations. Sometimes kids throw up because mucus left over from a cold has drained, in which case it s also not worthy of a sick day. RED LIGHT Stop - stay home If your baby is 4 months old or younger, call the doctor at the slightest indication of fever (anything above 98.6 F) or a sudden change in behavior; daycare is out. Older children should stay home if their temps rise above F. A feverish child is not only considered cantagious, but he s also probably not feeling well enough to learn or participate. Keep him home until he s been fever-free for 24 hours and is feeling like his usual self. If your child has vomited two or more times in 24 hours, she s benched. Watch for signs of dehydration as well: She s peeing less than usual and her urine is dark yellow; she doesn t produce tears when she cries; or there are no bubbles between her lips and her gums. To ward off dehydration, offer small amounts of fluid frequently, increasing the amount as tolerated. One more thing: Don t automatically send your child back once the vomiting stops. If she s not markedly better after a few days, call the doctor. RED EYES: When the white part of the child s eye is only slightly pink and the discharge is clear and watery, he s likely got a school-safe allergy. His eye is stuck shut, bright red, and/or oozing yellow or green discharge. These symptoms all indicate the highly contagious bacteria form of pinkeye (conjunctivitis), and the kiddo should stay put until he s been on antibiotics for 24 hours or until the gooiness dries up. DIARRHEA: Your child s stools are only slightly loose and she s acting normally. Some kids develop toddler s diarrhea, triggered by a juice OD; as long as the poop isn t excessive, the child has the all-clear. Kids who have the runs more than three times a day and/or have poop so watery it leaks out of the diaper. They likely have an infection that can spread. If you see blood or mucus in the stool, call the doctor; she may want to do a culture. As with vomiting, watch for signs of dehydrations, and follow the same preventions advice. SORE THROAT: A sore throat accompanied by a runny nose is often just due to simple irritation from the draining mucus; send him off as long as he s fever free. If the achy throat is accompanied by swollen glands, a fever, headache, or stomachache, bring him to the doctor for a strep test, especially if he s 3 or older (the bacterial infection is unusual in younger kids). Children with strep should be on antibiotics for at least a full day before mixing in with class. STOMACHACHE: If this is your child s only symptom and she s active, send her off. It could signal constipation, or even a case of nerves (in which a hug will go far). Any stomachache associated with vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or no interest in play warrants a trip to the M.D, Sharp stomach pain and a rigid belly can be signs of severe constipation, appendicitis, or a bowel obstruction. COLDS: If your child is fever-free and isn t hacking up a storm, he a go. After all, if children with snotty noses were excluded, schools would be empty! Junior is staying home if he has a persistent, phlegm cough and seems cranky or lethargic. He s also couch-bound if his cold symptoms are accompanied by a fever or wheezing. 3 Halloween Basket Raffle The lucky winners of this years Halloween basket raffle. All proceeds went to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Herkimer Community Museum Do you like dinosaurs? Have you ever seen the golden treasures found in King Tut s tomb? Would you like to be an archeologist or paleontologist when you grow up? The Herkimer Community Museum has exhibits on dinosaurs and ancient Egypt, including a hands -on fossil dig room where you can practice being a paleontologist and dig up buried fossils! The dinosaur exhibit includes complete Chasmosaurus and Raptor skeletons, as well as complete T- Rex and Allosaurus skulls, plus other dinoartifacts!! The exhibit on ancient Egypt features archeological treasures that were discovered in King Tut s tomb, including his golden throne and funeral mask! The Herkimer Community Museum ins open on Saturdays from 10:00 am to The Herkimer Community Museum is open on Saturdays form 10:00am to 2:00pm. 2:00 pm. It is located at 301 North Prospect Street in the village of Herkimer in the back of the library building. Parking is available and admission is $5 for adults, which includes admission for one accompanying child age 12 or under. Each additional child is $1. 4 Emergency Closing That time of year is fast approaching when school may be closed due to unseasonable weather. Please listen to the radio or watch local TV stations in the morning to see if school is going to close or be delayed. If there is a delayed opening, DO NOT drop your children off at the usual time as there will not be staff available to ensure their safety or let them into the school. Please be sure to have a back-up plan ready for child care in the event of such a delay or closure. If we have a snow day, the letter day for that particular day will be skipped. Therefore, if we have a snow day on a B day, the next day classes that are in session will be a C day. Also, we ask that you do not call the school, radio, or TV stations. The decision to close is made by the district and the decision is not made by our school alone. Any information the district receives from law enforcement agencies will be available from the Herkimer County Sheriff s Department, the Village of Ilion Police Department, or at the District Office upon written request in accordance with the Freedom of Information Law. A good citizen respects authority at home, in school, in the neighborhood, and in the larger community. Citizenship means protecting the environment and working to keep it beautiful. This means not littering and not writing graffiti. A good citizen recycles, reuses, and conserves materials and natural resources. Citizenship means exercising one s right to vote. A good citizen becomes informed about the issue before deciding how to vote. Animal Character Kupa is the bear that stands for citizenship. Her name is from the Hawaiian word for citizen. Kupa believes that we are all part of the same family and must do our share to help each other and our communities. Kupa also believes that protecting the environment is an important part of citizenship. She wears a purple ribbon medallion around her neck. Color Purple Purple as in the regal purple representing the state or the Purple Heart medal. People who are good citizens Are good neighbors. Cooperate with others. Obey laws and rules. Respect authority. Protect the environment. Vote. Join and participate in school/civic groups. Take pride in their home, school, community and country. Defend their own rights and the rights of others. Stay informed about important issues.
