The Activity Department has begun planning the next few months schedule for outdoor programs and events. The Building Services Department will be cleaning up the grounds and preparing the outdoor areas. We will also be tuning up our air conditioning and ventilation systems. Once again, we would like to congratulate Binny Thomas on receiving the prestigious award from the Foundation of Long Term Care. Binny s work and story has been featured on television s NY1. In addition, the Staten Island Advance did a feature story on Binny and the program as well. We urge all residents interested to join our art program, and who knows, maybe you will win an award next year. As some holidays are coming up soon, including Easter and Passover, the Activities Department has planned some great events. The Dietary Department will be preparing special meals for those occasions. Have a Happy Holiday and enjoyable spring. 2 2 March 2018 Fascinating Facts about Daylight Saving Time (starts March 11, 2018) More than a century before Daylight Saving Time was adopted by any major country, Benjamin Franklin proposed a similar concept in a satirical essay published in 1784.In one prophetic passage, he pitched the idea as money-saver. While his essay clearly brought up some practical points, Franklin may have originally written it as an excuse to poke fun at the French for being lazy. The first serious case for Daylight Saving Time came from a peculiar place. While working at a post office by day, an entomologist who did most of his bug hunting at night soon became frustrated by how early the sun set during the summer months. He reasoned that springing the clocks forward would allow more daylight for bug collecting-along with other evening activities. The clocks could be switched back in the winter when people (and bugs) were less likely to be found outdoors. In 1916, Germany became the first country to officially adopt Daylight Saving Time. It was born out of an effort to conserve coal during World War I and Britain, along with many other European nations, was quick to follow the Germans lead. It wasn t until 1918 that the time change spread to the U.S. The U.S reconsidered Daylight Saving Time in the 1970s, when, once again, the argument pivoted back to energy conservation. The oil embargo of 1973 had kicked off and nationwide energy crisis and the government was looking for ways to reduce public consumption. Daylight Saving Time was imposed in the beginning of 1974 to sav energy in the winter months. Daylight Saving Time has been widely accepted across the country, but it s still not mandated by federal law. U.S residents resistant to springing forward and falling back each year might consider moving to Arizona. The state isn t exactly desperate for extra sunlight, so every spring they skip their time jump. This leaves the Navajo Nation, which does observe the change, in a peculiar situation, making them suspended one hour in the future for half the year. Daylight Saving Time doesn t begin at the stroke of midnight like you might expect it to. Rather, the time change is delayed until most people (hopefully) aren t awake to notice it. The idea is that most workers with early shifts will still be in bed, and most bars and restaurants will already be closed. Until recently, losing an hour of daylight in the fall presented a problem for the candy industry. That s because Daylight Saving Time traditionally ended on the last Sunday in October, a.k.a. before Halloween night. Intense lobbying to push back the date went on for decades. According to one report, candy lobbyists even went so far as to place tiny candy pumpkins on the seats of everyone in the Senate in A law extending Daylight Saving Time into November finally went into effect in 2007.

Christina McLendon, a Navy veteran from Texas was visiting New York to attend a late September women s retreat.

6 6 March 2018 A note from Kenny Sometimes a story comes along that makes you want to stand up and cheer. I hear them all the time because they take place in Centers homes everywhere. But this one caught my attention because of some unusual circumstances. The thanks of the entire Centers Health Care family goes out to our team at Steuben Center where it all took place. Christina McLendon, a Navy veteran from Texas was visiting New York to attend a late September women s retreat. What happened to her while she was here changed her life, and a lot of lives at Steuben Center. Christina was struck by an automobile while walking through a local parking lot and severely injured. Her shattered leg required two separate and very complicated surgeries at Corning-Guthrie Hospital, and extensive rehabilitation. With her 12-year-old son and her husband at home in Texas, Christina was completely alone. Then she chose Steuben Center for her rehabilitation and everything changed. Christina looked at her situation as an opportunity to meet new people and joined us with such an upbeat attitude and positive outlook that she quickly became one of our most popular residents. She worked tirelessly on her rehab and became a cheerleader for her fellow residents, giving them a needed boost when their therapy got tough. If I can do it, you can too and other encouraging words backed by her bright smile, were credited by dozens of other residents as being the tonic they needed at just the right time to help them through their own rehab. As the holidays drew closer, when most people in her situation would struggle with depression, Christina became even more upbeat. A welcome visit from her husband and son at Thanksgiving helped of course, but Christina saw the holidays as just another way to bring joy into other people s lives. She assisted the team at Steuben by wrapping eighty presents they had purchased for their residents, and personally delivered them to everyone on Christmas morning. As she neared the end of her rehabilitation, she told us about all that she had gotten from her experience. I m looking at all that I can take away from this she said. I got to meet so many wonderful people and learn their stories. They are amazing and I found them so inspiring. And I ve been blown away by the kindness and generosity of people. It s made me revaluate how I want to go forward in life. On January 30 th, the Steuben Center family threw a surprise farewell party for Christina. She will be missed by everyone, but her story will continue to inspire other residents for a long time to come. Kenny Rozenberg, CEO

7 March Staying ahead of the curve There are always exciting things happening in the therapy suite at every Centers facility. After all, recovery is exciting. But this month, four of our facilities are participating in a virtual reality pilot program that may ultimately change the therapy protocols throughout the Centers Health Care family. Virtual reality therapy has made its way into many rehab facilities, as a way to provide low-impact workouts in a real world setting. However, the set-up is often large, unwieldy, and requires extensive specialized equipment. Now, Centers is partnering with Jintronix, a Canadian firm, to bring their breakthrough rehab technology to our residents. Jintronix uses a sophisticated yet very compact computer and advanced motion sensors to create a wide range of precise activities. Residents sit or stand in front of a television and the therapist creates an exercise that appears on the screen. The resident sees his or her movements on the screen and every motion is tracked and recorded so as the resident progresses through their rehabilitation, their advances are documented and the sophistication of the exercises is increased. And one of the best parts? The Jintronix system uses computer gaming technology to make the therapy fun! Residents might find themselves skiing, playing soccer, or shooting a basketball. The games make therapy more enjoyable, encourage longer sessions, and provide immediate positive reinforcement. Just one more way that Centers Health Care is staying ahead of the curve.
