1 2015 XC GIRLS SECTION XI PRE-SEASON RANKINGS Written by Sachem North Girls XC Coach Alex Young Kathryn Lee (SWR) had fastest time of the day in the Championship Race at 2014 Divisions Alex DeCicco (Sachem East) leads Class A field at 2014 State Qualifier Meet Suffolk County is returning some of the state s top talent in the 2015 XC season. In addition to XC success, many of Suffolk s top runners made it to award podiums during winter and spring track & field seasons. Rankings that follow are based on 2014 post-season meets at Sunken Meadow s repaired 5K course. It was good to be back on the classic course after a year on the Storm Sandy-altered 5K Course. The team rankings that follow are my own and are best used as a guide to the 2015 season based on returning runners. Rankings are based on results from Divisions and Counties. Most harriers listed in the Class A, B, C, D ranking below ran both meets the faster time is used for pre-season rankings. The break point for rankings is 24:00 for Classes A and B, 26:00 minutes for Class C and 29:00 for Class D. Team rankings especially in the merged results reflect top 5 Class-merged results. Only sub-24:00 times are listed in the merged results. The pre-season top 5 Class A teams are returning a total of 31 of their top 35 runners from 2014 (given that all do return to their XC teams). This means that good talent and big meet experience will be part of any Class A team s formula for success in Top Class B teams show the same rate of veteran returns with Shoreham-Wading River bringing back all seven top harriers, Bayport-Blue Point bringing back six and Miller Place returning five. Class C and D top schools show higher percentages of returning veterans with the outstanding number of 38 county championship race harriers out of a possible 42 coming back for the top 3 teams in Classes C and D. In Class A and Class B, top teams should run away with a Class County Championship in November. Sachem East is returning a strong squad and should be able to hold off rivals with some ease. Shoreham-Wading River is returning Class B NYS champion Kathryn Lee and, like Sachem East, will defend its county title from last year. In Class C, Mercy reverses last year s top 2 results on a #6 runner tie-breaker in pre-season rankings. In Class D, Pierson should defend its 2014 title with another nail-biter win over Shelter Island. In the Battle of the Best on the Championship Race starting line on October 27, Sachem East should hold off Shoreham-Wading River. This showdown may not happen if Sachem East sticks to its recent philosophy of holding back in Divisions. Sachem East beats Shoreham-Wading River in the pre-season merge The race for States for individual runners will be exciting especially in Class B which is pretty wide open after SWR claims four of the top six pre-season spots. As the season begins, the debate will begin on which teams will

2 be in the hunt for Federation Championships. Early season on-the-road tests against top-ranked teams from upstate, Manhattan College Inv. results and post-season team averages will move some teams up and others down in key NYS rankings. Coaches and athletes will have fun plugging in what they believe to be more accurate times and runners given their better knowledge about the team they anticipate beginning and ending the 2015 season with. One talented rookie or a great summer training program by one or more team members or the natural progression of a motivated harrier with a good talent level can change a team s outlook and success in a hurry. The 2014 preseason picks list was right in only one Class Champion prediction. Only one 2014 Class pre-season #1 team won it all at Counties Mattituck of Class C. Pre-season #2-ranked teams in Class A (Sachem East), Class B (Shoreham- Wading River) and Class D (Pierson) won team titles. Tullyrunners picked Northport (Class A) and Miller Place (Class B) as top Section XI pre-season teams last year as well. Pierson wasn t on tullyrunners radar last year. Stony Brook (#16) and Pierson (#18) are both top 20 Class D teams in tullyrunners pre-season rankings for the 2015 season. Good luck to all athletes and teams in the fall, 2015 season! 4 CLASS A TEAM RANKINGS (2014 team score) 1. Sachem East 44 points (57) Sachem East is returning virtually all of its top runners from its 2014 county championship team. That means nine runners in the case of East as it altered its top 7 line-up at Federations. A 6 th place finish at 2014 States in team scoring should give the East Flaming Arrows some new goals for the 2015 built to win team season. The teams finishing ahead of East all had more than one runner in the top 40. East s Alex DeCicco finished 13 th overall and was East s lone top 40 finisher. One year more experience and a stronger veteran core could change this dramatically. And East packs a powerful 1-2 punch with DeCicco and senior teammate Val Romero leading Class A s top squad. 2. Northport 87 points (121) Northport seniors Jackie Thorne, Amelia Kuehn and Rebecca Macleod lead a talented team into the fall season. Jackie Thorne may get to States for the fourth straight year. The Tigers may make a bid for Federations with its top five from 2014 making up a strong team core. 3. Bay Shore 129 points (164) Bay Shore placed 4 th in last year s county championship race. And then got stronger as seen in winter and spring track results from meters. Bay Shore returns six from its 2014 County s squad. Jasmine Reyes and Bridget Kanaley lead a talented group. Look for sophomore Anna Pirkl (based on her strong winter and spring track seasons) to give a boost to the Bay Shore line-up if she joins XC. 4. Sachem North 138 points (114) Senior Mackenzie Coleman leads a team returning six of its top seven from North s #1 runner Elise Ramirez is off to SUNY Geneseo. Can a group that made of for its lack of experience with mettle in 2014 as it placed 3 rd at Counties rise to the occasion again? 5. Eastport-South Manor 188 points (177) Junior Taylor McClay leads a team returning its entire 2014 County s squad. On the outside looking in: Ward Melville 206 (87), Hauppauge 248 (221) and Riverhead 261 (273). Ward Melville ran away with first place in the Individual Team Race at 2014 Divisions taking five of the top seven spots. The Patriots should displace one or more of the top five teams at Counties. Shoreham-Wading River 31 points (37) Katherine Lee was the 2014 NYS Class B Champion and had Section XI s fastest time at SUNY Canton and placed 5 th overall at Feds. SW-R s top four is tops in the county. Tullyrunners ranks SW-R #13 in NYS in the pre-season rankings. If SW-R can get stronger in the #5 runners spot they can move up on Sachem East (#9 on tullyrunners). And if they can catch Sachem East, Burnt Hills and North Shore of Class B might start hearing some footsteps. 2. Bayport-Blue Point 62 points (68) Sophomore Madison Delzell will be followed by the close (8 seconds separating the foursome) teammate pack of Kathleen Cibuls, Julia Aurandt, Melody Delzell and Allison McGrath to claim #2 in Class B. More than one B-BP harrier could make the Section bus for States. 3. Miller Place 81 points (51) Senior Laura Nolan leads Miller Place. Miller Place has graduated a Who s Who of XC and distance in the last two years. The Panthers tradition of success may be part of their formula for greater success than seen in pre-season rankings this year. On the outside looking in: Mount Sinai 131 (129), Islip 148 (145) and Harborfields 151 (94) Mount Sinai sophomore Noreen Guilfoyle looks to return to States for the second straight year. Mercy 41 points (56) Class C will feature the closest race at Counties in November. Mercy beats Mattituck in the tie-breaker by virtue of Mercy senior Teresa Bellucci 20 second edge over Mattituck junior Katie Stumpf. Senior Meg Tuthill was running with the best in the county in the spring post-season (2: m. and 4: m.) and will try to close out her high school XC career with a Class and a Monarchs team title. 2. Mattituck 41 points (40) Junior Melanie Pfennig lead Mattituck but senior Audrey Hoeg is key for Mattituck if the Tuckers are to repeat as team champions as Hoeg is within eight seconds of two Mercy rivals. 3. Center Moriches 72 points (57) Center Moriches has the depth to finish 3 rd in team standings but may not get a runner into the State meet for the first time since On the outside looking in: Port Jefferson (118) and Southampton (118) Lumei Abatangelo (Southampton) and Aileen Schretzmayer (Port Jefferson) will be in the running for States. Pierson 33 points (33) Another nail-biter for Pierson as it tries to hold off Shelter Island to repeat as Class D champion. Senior Hannah Jungck finished only three seconds behind Shelter Island s Lindsay Gallagher last year. Jungck will try to close out senior year with a Class and Whalers team title. Watch for the Class letters on team jerseys as Classes C and D race at the same time at Counties. Spectators may get confused but Pierson and Shelter Island (and Class C Mercy and Mattituck) will know exactly who they are racing and chasing and beating. 2. Shelter Island 34 points (36) Tullyrunners has Shelter Island edging Pierson in pre-season rankings. Emma Gallagher and Caitlin Binder can change the Indians fortune if even one beats a Pierson rival at Counties. 3. Stony Brook 54 points (57) Soph Miranda Harrigan leads Stony Brook and looks to return to States for the third straight year.
