1 Volume 7, Issue 23 Summer 2016 SMS Says Good Luck to Retiring Teachers Ferris and Antonucci By Julianna Aiello Mrs. Janet Ferris Mrs. Ferris, an 8 th grade math teacher, has been teaching for 39 years. Twenty of those years were teaching here, at the Middle School. She has taught accelerated math and regular 8 th grade math her whole career. For the last two years, she has only taught 8 th Grade. Her first year was her most favorite year. It is special. I ve always wanted to teach, for that was my passion. Mrs. Ferris started teaching in Carmel, NY. She taught there for 7 years, and then she had her three children. She took time off for her kids for 12 years. She also taught at Marist College and Duchess Community college as an Adjutant Instructor. When she came back to Somers, it was another first year. She used to run the Washington D.C. Trip with Mr. Mullaney. She also used to run the Service Club. Mrs. Ferris is an 8 th grade Team Leader. She is on the Red Team. She has always wanted to be a teacher; and she has never changed her mind, according to her mother. She has taught a span of students and adults from middle schoolaged through college-aged. She has also taught adults at an IBM Program. It was rewarding, says Mrs. Ferris. It didn t matter if it was easy or hard. Mrs. Ferris favorite teaching tool to use was the Smart Board. It is great for math; I like it a lot for math teacher, she said. She will remember Somers Middle School as a wonderful place to work. A great place to have my second first year, and it was welcoming. The kids were great as well as the community. I couldn t think of a nicer school district to come back to. I was really proud to work in a school that provides such great information. Even though some students don t think their teacher will remember anything, they really do remember everything. By Remi Saad Mrs. Janet Antonucci As you may have heard, Mrs. Antonucci, the SMS 6th grade social studies teacher, is retiring. She will be retiring at the end of the school year. We will all miss her very much, and will be sad to see her leave. She was a big part of the SMS community. I have made a tribute to her and I interviewed her to find out what she will miss and to get an understanding about her retirement. We all wish Mrs. Antonucci a great rest of the school year and wish her the very best as she transitions into the next phase of her life. Continued on page 5

Some people study everyday weeks in advance {Early bird}. Others start to study a week before {Evening bird}. Some start studying the night before {Night bird}. And the rest don t study at all {Flightless bird}. I wrote this article to tell all of the students whatever their study habits may be how to deal with the stress. Early birds: For all the early birds, it s always good to get an early start. But if you re going to do that much studying you need to take breaks and just relax. Evening bird: For the evening bird you guys are right on track. But you should try to get more comfortable while studying. Night birds: Most night birds pick up quickly, but if you re one who does not, then you could try to become an evening bird or try to associate the information you have to remember with an activity you like. You could create a song that has the info if you like music. Flightless birds: Flightless birds usually don t care if they mess up or they feel like they know it all. But it s always better to study so try using the Night birds tip.

3 Page 3 Movie Review: X-Men Apocalypse By Dani Tellez So X Men Apocalypse is the newest x men movie directed by Bryan Singer. In this one, the first mutant ever was this guy from ancient Egypt. He s been asleep and now he has awakened, and he s going to wreck some stuff. So he has four mutants to help him destroy the world. These four are the biblical Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and the x-men need to come together and stop them. The Good First of all, let s talk about what did work in the movie. Sophie Turner as Jean Grey impressed me. Quicksilver once again gets a great speed-scene. He had a much bigger role in this one than the last one and I liked that, I just like Evan Peters as Quicksilver. There is this great scene halfway through the movie. They spoiled it in the trailers, but it s still great. Cyclops is really cool. And I absolutely love James McAvoy as Professor X. He was great in the first two; he s great in this one. I will say the first half of this movie is enjoyable. The Bad The villain sucks. He is not menacing, nothing about him makes sense and he looks horrible. There is literally this one scene where Apocalypse is standing in front of the Four Horsemen and he is the smallest one of them. That s kind of a problem when he s suppose to be the big villain in this huge, apocalyptic movie. He s so overpowered, he can turn solid matter into dust. He can just turn one man into dust if he feels like it. So whenever he doesn t turn any of the X-men into dust, he s just being an idiot. But in the end But honestly guys, this movie is a fun time. It has some cool destructive scenes. I wish they could ve added more stuff. I don t know, I just feel like there were a lot of missed opportunities. The good and the bad of this movie is pretty much equal. X-Men: Apocalypse, if I can put it simply is like this. It s entertaining, but lacks a lot of the depth that the previous movies both had for me personally. It s not as good as First Class, Days of Future Past, X-Men one or X-Men two. But it s better than X-Men origins: Wolverine and X-men 3 for sure. They could ve done a better job, but it s not a bad movie. 4 Page 4 Nitin s Noshes! Today s Recipe: The Best Noodles EVER! By Nitin Seshadri Have you ever come home and realized there was nothing in the fridge to munch on? Why not make some Chinese Ramen noodles? What you need Two packages of ramen noodles (or one depending on how much you want to eat) A microwave safe bowl Peanut butter (you can try other options if you re allergic) Hot sauce The steps 1. Pour water into a bowl and microwave it to a boil (You can use a stove instead if you know how.) 2. Open your package(s) of ramen noodles and break the noodles into smaller pieces. 3. Dump the noodles into the boiling water. Don t get any hot water on yourself! 4. Using some kind of wooden spoon, swirl around the noodles until they are fully cooked. 5. Drain the water out of the noodles. 6. While the noodles are still warm, thoroughly mix in peanut butter and A LITTLE BIT of the hot sauce. 7. Serve warm in a bowl. 8. Enjoy! How long it will take you to make this dish: 5-10 minutes How long it will take you to eat it: 2-5 minutes Conclusion: I thoroughly enjoyed this dish and definitely would want to eat it every day. Just one quick tip of advice: don t load up too much on the hot sauce or bad things could happen. Happy eating and have a great summer! To All 6th Graders: 7th Grade is a Video Game! By Matthew Kushner Dear incoming 7th grader: Well, I see that youhave made it alive out of 6th grade. Ready to endure another year of torture? Guess what? You have to, anyway! So,let me show you how to survive (only if you want to ) another year of torture! First, make sure to carry a first aid kit. These come in very handy when you are attacked by the living dea er, I mean, teachers! Second, carry around an emergency shelter at all times. You never know when you ll need it!. (I carry mine around ALL the time). Lastly, don t be stupid. That s how you don t get past this level! Good luck surviving the fall out. Remember, there s no replay on this game! 5 Page 5 Ferris and Antonucci Continued from page 1 Remi: Are you very excited for going into retirement? Mrs. Antonucci: I am excited for going into retirement, although, I am very sad that I will be leaving SMS because I will miss all of my students and my friends here. Remi: What was your favorite memory here at the Middle School? Mrs. Antonucci: My favorite memory probably would be doing projects for every Ancient History Unit. The projects that we did are just so much fun to do. For example, we did a travel guide for India, The Egypt Project, Greek Gods, and the Roman Newspaper. Remi: What was your least favorite memory here at the Middle School? Mrs. Antonucci: My least favorite memory here at the Middle School will probably be, trying to keep track of the students who don't finish and/or don't do their homework. Remi: What do you look forward to, when you go into retirement? Mrs. Antonucci: I am looking forward to doing some volunteer work, doing a little travelling, spending more time in my garden, spending time learning and spending some time working on my hobbies, spending more time with my family, my kids, going to all these groovy places in New York City. Remi: Are you going to have any regrets leaving the school? If so, what are they? Mrs. Antonucci: Yes, my regrets will be seeing all my students smiling faces, every day, listening to all their funny comments, seeing all my good friends that I teach with, teaching my ancient history that I love so much, and just in general, being in the Somers Schools day in, and day out, and doing something that I love to do for 42 years. When we first started I was at the Intermediate School, it was 4, 5, 6, and this school was 7, 8. When I came here, it was my team and me, deciding what subjects we wanted to teach, and I decided to teach what I always wanted to teach, and that was Ancient History Social Studies. That is what I have done ever since I came to the Middle School, and that was in Remi: When will you be leaving into retirement? Mrs. Antonucci: June 23rd, 24th, is my last day. Remi: What will be the thing you will miss most in the Middle School? Mrs. Antonucci: The thing I will the most would have to be, being with the kids.
