1 Kessie s Gift for Santa *** By Kerry & Des Hegarty (A story for all primary school children...and their teachers!) What would you like for Christmas Kessie? asked mum. I can t tell you. You re not Santa! said Kessie evidently. Why don t you write him a letter? 1

2 Kessie fetched her best colouring pencils and enthusiastically began to scribble, asking her mum now and again for help with some of the tricky words:- Dear Santa These are the good things I ve done this year. 1. I did the washing up on Mother s Day. 2. I helped dad mend the hoover. 3. I didn t cry when I banged my knee. 4. I made Grandma a rain hat out of cereal boxes and toilet rolls. Please can I have a yellow bike with a helmet (yellow). Love Kessie XXX P.S. I think I should have some knee pads as well (pink please). Kessie excitedly rushed mum to the post box and beamed as she thought of the yellow helmet and bike, and pink knee pads. On the way back home all was calm until a question popped into her head: What would Santa like for Christmas? 2

3 Kessie thought of Christmases past: When Kessie was 3, Santa had given her a blue robot called J.I.M.M. (Jolly Interesting Metal Man). When Kessie was 4, Santa left her a Princess and the Pea play set which came with a Prince, a Princess and 305 mini mattresses... oh, and of course, a pea! When Kessie was 5, Santa bought her a Rock n Roll Rocking Horse, complete with a stereo system in the saddle in order to play music to rock and roll to! Now that she was a responsible and very mature 6 year old, she suddenly felt it was time to give something in back return for all those lovely pressies. But what should it be? *** On Tuesday, she went swimming with her dad after school. She explained her predicament to him whilst bobbing up and down in the pool. What, blrrr, blrrr, like, blrrr, blrrr, Santbllrr? said dad inbetween taking accidental gulps of chlorine. 3

4 What he was actually saying was: What would you like to get Santa? Kessie said that she had no idea! What about some warm socks to keep his feet toasty? said Kessie s dad, treading water. Kessie thought that socks were practical but a tiny bit boring! So she had a think and Pop! an idea appeared in Kessie s mind. Kessie would make him a new sack. Well, the one he uses already must be very old and in need of replacing. Kessie had just started sewing lessons at school and she was in the process of making a butterfly placemat, so she definitely had stitching experience under her belt! Her plan was to use all the duvet covers and sheets in the house and join them together to make a huge sack. The final touch would be a special pocket sewn onto the sack to put special jelly sweets in for Santa (the ones shaped like snowmen which had strawberry flavoured scarves. Yummy). 4

5 Then she remembered that Miss Fiennes, Kessie s teacher had said that some of her stitches were a little too far apart: And if that was the case the present might fall out of the sack And if that happens, Santa won t have anything to deliver. And if that happens, there would be lots of disappointed children. She would have to have another think... *** On Wednesday, Kessie went to the park with her best friend Marj. She explained her Santa dilemma while they were on the swings. What do you think you ll get him? said Marj swinging back and forth. Kessie said she had no idea! 5

6 When the girls had had enough swinging for one day and were sitting on the park bench having a carton of orange juice and a packet of Cheesie Chumps, Marj suggested: A Beard Trimmer! What about a Beard Trimmer? Kessie thought that a beard trimmer would definitely come in handy for Santa s long whiskers but lacked pizazz! So she had another think and Pop! Kessie had another idea! What if Kessie was to make Santa a huge chocolate fudge cake! It would have Thanks Santa spelt out in those special jelly sweets (the ones shaped like snowmen which had strawberry flavoured scarves. Yummy). But wait, she thought! What if Santa likes the cake so much that he eats it all? And then he goes delivering his presents and he flies onto his first rooftop. And then he starts to climb down a chimney. And then his tummy is so full......he GETS STUCK! 6

7 That would surely stop him from delivering anymore presents and international air rescue helicopters would have to somehow pull him out! Kessie would have to have yet another think!.. *** On Thursday it was Christmas Eve and only one more sleep before the BIG DAY. Kessie went last minute shopping with her Auntie Bella. As they waited for the bus back home, Kessie explained her Santa problem. The roads where full of cars, and the cars were full of frantic people eager to get back home in time for a mince pie and a night cap. What Beep! Beep! think Honk! Honk! Santa Wee Ooo, Wee-Ooo Kessie? Minus the sounds of the traffic Auntie Bella was actually saying: What do you think Santa would like Kessie? Kessie said she had no idea! 7

8 What about some boot polish? said Auntie Bella whilst they were standing on the bus. Kessie thought boot polish was a really naff idea, but told Auntie Bella that she d think about it as she didn t want to hurt her feelings! Whilst they were waiting for the lights to change to green, Kessie screwed up her face and thought one last time and Pop! all this traffic had given her an amazing Santa pressie brain wave! What if she built him a Supersonic Santa Sleigh, equipped with a North Pole Navigation system and sweet dispenser (and she wondered whether she could get some of those snowmen with strawberry scarves - Yummy). Santa would be able to deliver those pressies in a jiffy! She was sure to have some cardboard boxes and toilet rolls left over from making Nan s rain hat. As soon as she went home she went to the cupboard in the office where mum and dad kept their scrap paper and odds and ends that might come in useful. She reached for the big bag of toilet rolls, cardboard boxes and bottle tops that was always kept in the back of the wardrobe. As she tried to pull the bag free, something fell out of the cupboard and lightly doinked her on the head. It was a roll of Christmas wrapping paper and on it were tiny little reindeers with big red noses. RUDOLPH! 8

9 What if Santa liked the new sleigh so much, that he wouldn t need his reindeer! And that would mean Rudoph would be out of a job! And that would mean no one would sing about his shiny nose! And that also would mean Rudolph wouldn t be seen on wrapping paper anymore! No! She definitely couldn t make Santa a Supersonic Sleigh! And now it was too late to think up another Pop!. Kessie hadn t got Santa anything. She felt truly awful! And that Christmas Eve Kessie fell asleep with a furrowed brow and her shoulders up to her ears. Later that night, Kessie was woken by a bump, a jingle and another bump! She got out of bed and quietly crept downstairs. Bump! Jingle! Bump! What was making those noises? She tiptoed into the living room to find a big round of red with boots on placing presents at the foot of the Christmas tree. Santa? Kessie whispered in disbelief! Kessie s whisper made Santa nearly jump out of his suit. They both looked as surprised as each other. 9

10 What on earth are you doing here? they both thought out loud as their eyes met and sparkled in the Christmas lights. Shhhhhh! You ll wake the others! Shhhh! No you! they both exclaimed! There was a pause before they both had a chuckle a very quiet one. Kessie offered Santa a cookie and they sat on the sofa munching their midnight snack. Kessie still had her brow down and shoulders up, and Santa had never seen a little girl look so worried! Santa asked her what was wrong. She explained the whole thing. Santa listened. There, there Kessie! You must not worry at all! But I m afraid I must continue my deliveries I m on a tight schedule. Santa stood and gave Kessie the best smile in the world. And Pop! it happened! But this time it really happened! Kessie knew exactly what to give Santa. She confidently strolled up to Santa, tried to put her arms round his massive tummy and gave him a big U-umpH! (also known as a squeezy hug). 10

11 Thank you Santa love from me and all the children everywhere! Merry Christmas! And Santa thought this was the best present ever! Santa left Kessie under strict instructions not to open any of the three presents he d left her until the morning, to which Kessie wholeheartedly agreed to. Before she made her way up to bed and as no one was around, she thought that she d just pick up the smallest present, have a quick feel and oops! - her fingernail accidently made a tear in the festive paper to reveal a glow of pink and a very happy child! *** It wasn t until later when Santa had nearly finished his Christmas delivery for the year and was looking for his packet of tissues so that he could blow some of the soot out of his poor nose, that he felt something small and squishy in this coat pocket. As he took it out, he realised that it was a gummy sweet, half nibbled and covered in fluff that seemed to resemble a Snowman with a scarf. The End and a MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all. 11
