3 HOTEL INFORMATION Location The conference will be held at the Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum by the Galleria. Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum by the Galleria Dallas Parkway Dallas, Texas Parking Self-parking for the Varsity University is a discounted rate of $5.00 per day (Garage / Parking Lot). We will provide the vouchers for the discounted parking at registration. You will need a voucher for each day you are attending the meeting. Incidentals Incidental charges such as room service, phone calls, movies, etc. will not be available in your room unless a credit card or cash deposit is provided at the front desk to guarantee such charges.

4 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Friday, May 12, 2017 If staying at the hotel, you will need to check-in to your room and proceed to the Varsity University registration desk for conference check-in. If you are commuting, you simply need to proceed to Varsity University registration located in the Grand Ballroom Foyer on the 1st floor beginning at 7:30 AM. Optional Cheer Judges Certification will take place from 8:00-11:30 AM in the Preston Trail 1-2 room. The Dance Judges Certification will take place in the Bent Tree 3 room during the same timeframe. Conference registration for judges certification participants will take place from 7:30-8:00 AM. *Lunch will not be provided on registration day. Please be sure to eat prior to Opening 12:00 PM! Conference registration for those not taking part in Judges Certification will take place from 8:00 AM-12:00 PM in the Grand Ballroom Foyer area on the 1 st floor. The conference opening session will be at 12:00 PM in the Grand Ballroom E room (please refer to diagram), and sessions will begin at 12:30 PM. Five of the eleven sessions will be offered and will finish at approximately 6:05 PM (see-enclosed schedule). A reception will be held from 6:15 to 7:30 PM following session 5 in Grand Ballroom F. AACCA training (Bent Tree 1-2) will take place from 7:00 10:00 PM. If you are unable to go through the registration process at the above listed time, please check-in at the Varsity University Registration Table upon your arrival to pick up your binder, badge and conference materials. Saturday, May 13, 2017 Conference registration for those only attending the conference on Saturday, will be from 8:00 AM-9:00 AM in the Grand Ballroom Foyer area on the 1 st floor.

7 MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION Conference Dress Many of the sessions are lecture sessions, but some will involve participation from the coaches/directors in attendance. It is suggested that you dress comfortably for the duration of the sessions. Warm-ups, shorts, tennis shoes, etc. are appropriate clothing for all sessions and meals. 9 JUDGES CERTIFICATION This course that is based on the NCA Scoring System will help prepare you to become a better judge at local tryouts and competitions. The speakers will discuss professionalism, judging techniques, and helpful hints for making the best decisions. You will have the opportunity to look at score sheets, noting differences that can affect your scoring process, and practice judge from a video. This course will also be beneficial to the coach that wants to learn more about the judging process, to be able to explain it to your team and parents. Those passing the course will receive a certificate of completion. Coaches will be required to take and pass the Judges Certification Test. This online, open note test is designed to demonstrate knowledge acquired through the judge s course. A certificate will be awarded to those receiving a score of at least 80%. Coaches must complete the test online by May 19, More information on the online test will be provided during the course. Judges Certification Course will take place from 8:00 AM 11:30 AM on Friday, May 12th. You may register on site, but please make sure to arrive by 7:30 AM on the morning of the 12th. COACHES CREDENTIAL Varsity University offers all coaches an optional Comprehensive Credentialing Course during the Coaches Conference, May 12-13, 2017! This Credential will cover eight topics, which will benefit you as a coach. If you have not already paid for this certification you can sign up and pay the $49 fee at registration on Friday, May 12th. All eight classes will be covered on the certification exam. Study materials will include personal notes and course outlines (included in course folder). Coaches will be given the log in information and online instructions for the certification exam upon check-in at the conference. You may take the test while in Dallas, or take the test at home to demonstrate knowledge acquired through the Comprehensive Credentialing Course. The online course must be completed by May 19, A certificate will be awarded to those receiving a score of at least 80%. Coaches will complete the test online and once complete and a score of 80% or better is earned, your certificate will be ed to you. If you are planning on attending NCA & NDA camp this summer, you can take both certifications, as they will be different. You will only be able to receive the liability coverage one time.

10 Speaker Bios 2017 VARSITY UNIVERSITY PRESENTER BIOS Bill Boggs is currently the Senior Vice-President for Varsity Spirit Corporation. He oversees the NCA/NDA college programs and is the Director of College STUNT, the fastest growing sport amongst college athletics. Bill is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and has been involved with all facets of spirit programs since He has coached at several different institutions, and served as an Assistant Athletic Director at the University of South Carolina. Bill has a tremendous passion for improving school spirit and promoting cheerleading and dance at colleges and universities Justin Carrier has been with NCA and Varsity Brands in various capacities since He's coached and choreographed more than 20 NCA High School All-Star and Collegiate National Champion routines. Justin co-authored and published Complete Cheerleading, available through Human Kinetics. Currently, Justin serves as Vice President of Varsity All Star and NCA, focusing on the competition market. Rachel Domangue is the Director of the National Dance Alliance. Rachel is also involved with the USASF Dance Rules Committee, the Judges Education Committee, the Dance National Advisory Board. Rachel holds a BFA in Performing Arts - Dance from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and she has worked as a teacher, coach, choreographer, and performer in various dance industries across the country over the last 15 years. Rachel is originally from New Orleans and currently resides in Dallas, Texas.

11 Mark Fang is a native of New York, and Graduating from Stony Brook University, we are happy to have Mark Fang, ATC joining the KORT team as the athletic trainer at Anderson Co. HS. He is a nationally certified athletic trainer through the BOC and becoming a Kentucky licensed athletic trainer through the KY Board of Medical Licensure. While at Stony Brook University Mark worked with numerous college sports as well as being the Athletic Trainer at Oyster Bay High School. Eric Gibson After stumbling upon college cheerleading in 2000, I developed a craving to learn more about this activity. This led me the following year on 9 hour trip to Honesdale, PA for my very first formal training with the National Cheerleaders Association. I continued my career working many events all around the world for Varsity Brands. These experiences have commanded me to research and develop my own vision for cheerleading. I take the perceptual knowledge that most are familiar with and translate it into my own personal conceptual vision. During my presentations I present this knowledge using a more scientific approach. I encourage you to join me on my journey with Varsity University and spread this message to your athletes so we can continue to create a safer experience. Stefanie Irick has been with NCA for 17 years and is a former NCA Head Instructor. She is an IFBB Professional fitness competitor specializing in nutrition and training. Stefanie has been a personal trainer for over 17 years. Stefanie majored in Kinesiology at Texas Woman s University. She been a NCA State Director for the past 7 years and currently manages South Texas. Stefanie has been married for 12 years and has 2 daughters, 5 years & 10 months. Cameron Larsen is a 4-time Power Tumbling and Trampoline National Champion. In 2005 he was on the USA World Team and competed the Power Tumbling World Championships and placed 10th. He is a 2009 NCA College National Champion with Weber State University and served as a captain of the cheer team for BYU. He has worked for Varsity Spirit since 2007 as part of UCA staff, head instructor, choreographer, and judge. He currently is working as the UCA and NCA State Director for Utah and Idaho and a V!ROC Choreography Director. His choreography has won multiple national and state titles across the US. Cameron resides in Utah and has a bachelor s degree from Brigham Young University.

12 Jim Lord is the Executive Director for the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators, and is a former captain for the nationally ranked University of Kentucky cheer squad. He has been involved in cheerleading since 1984 as a cheerleader, coach, and administrator. He works with the NFHS Spirit Rules Committee and is a recipient of the NFHS Outstanding Service Award. He has spoken at over 30 different state coaches conference as well as national and international conferences. When not working on cheerleading safety, Jim volunteers at his son's elementary school where he is the president of the PTO. Phil O'Neill arrived at the University of Oklahoma after a 21 year stint at Villanova University where he served as the Cheerleading Coordinator and Head Coach for 13 years. While at Villanova, Phil gained valuable student life experience as the Assistant Director of Student Development for Fraternity and Sorority Life. In addition to these two roles, Phil also served as an adjunct faculty member in the Leadership Learning and Service Learning Communities. In addition to serving as a UCA Staff Member, he has been teaching with Varsity University, the professional development arm of Varsity Spirit Corp and has been a safety certifier for the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators for the past seven years. Phil has all of his degrees from Villanova including a dual major BA in Political Science and Communication Arts as well as an MBA. He has coached competitively at the collegiate and high school level and for 11 years in the all-star realm as owner and partner in Liberty Cheer Institute. Valerie Stead Potsos is entering her 12th season as the head coach of the nationally ranked University of Michigan dance team and is the Director/Owner of Dancer's Edge in Dexter, MI Dancer s Edge was recently named as one of the Top Studios on the Move in Dance Spirit Magazine. She is a Seminar presenter, and consultant for AACCA (American Association of Cheer Coaches and Administrators) and for Universal Cheer and Dance Association on topics such as Motivation, Leadership, Teambuilding and many more! Furthermore, she earned the "2004 Coaches Leadership Award" at Universal Dance Association. She is a guest choreographer for studios and for professional corporate sponsors including Ford Motor Company and much more. Her articles on coaching and dance have appeared in Dance Spirit, American Cheerleader and in Motion Magazines. Along with judging local. state and national competitions, she has judged Studio, High School and College Dance Nationals as well for various organizations. As an instructor in the Kinesiology department, U-Move at The University of Michigan. She has been dancing since age three and teaching dance since age fourteen and was a member and captain of The University of Michigan Dance Team. Valerie graduated with a B.A. from the University of Michigan and has additional graduate studies in Secondary Education from Michigan State University. Valerie resides in Dexter, MI with her husband and two sons and daughter.

13 Ben Schreiber is entering his fourth season as the head coach and head of the spirit program at The Ohio State University. Schreiber, who cheered for the Buckeyes from , comes to Ohio State after spending five years as head cheerleading coach at the University of Delaware, where he led the Blue Hens to the 2014 UCA Division I Large Coed National Championship, along with second-place finishes in 2010, 2011, 2012 and In addition, Schreiber added an all-girl team in the fall of 2011, expanding the cheerleading program to two teams. Jenny Durbin Smith is a nationally recognized and award-winning choreographer. She is a former member of the UNC-Chapel Hill cheer and dance teams and a former captain for the NBA Dallas Mavericks Dancers. Jenny has been a principle dancer for many national projects and her choreography has been featured on national television commercials, industrials, films, reality television shows, NFL fields and NBA courts. In addition to being the proud director of the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm and Blue, the only co-ed hip hop dance crew in the NFL, she is a choreographer for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and travels the country choreographing and master instructing for numerous teams and studios John White, a former cheerleader and graduate of the University of Mississippi, has worked for over 20 years with Varsity Brands. His diverse career has included being the director of apparel sales for Varsity Spirit Fashions as well as directing the annual business of Universal Cheerleaders Association in the West Region. Helping develop and manage strategic relationships with various high school activities associations throughout the Western US, John has been a guest speaker at various coaches conferences. For the past 15 years, John has been the Director of College Programs for Universal Cheerleaders Association helping manage UCA/UDA College Spirit Camps, which has grown into the largest annual training program for college spirit teams and their coaches. He s consulted with numerous college athletic departments regarding coaching placements, strategic camp partnerships and the develop of Spirit Programs in today s dynamic college sports landscape. He s helped place coaches at various SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 12, Mountain West and Big East schools, as well as consult with the NAIA, the NCAA and the Big 10 Conference on spirit program safety issues. He was a contributing member to the creative team behind STUNT, is a member of NACMA, and was instrumental in developing the coach s curriculum program that evolved into Varsity University.

14 Tucker Hunter is an experienced instructor, athlete and speaker. He was a member of the Oklahoma State University Large Coed Team from and served as the captain during the academic year. He won the NCA Collegiate National Champion in Division 1A from 2012 to He is a four-time medalist as a member of the USA National Coed Team. He currently serves as a member and staffing director of the NCA Speed Staff. Joan Noble-Pruett is in her third year as an assistant coach with the Michigan dance team. She brings a wealth of experience gathered through her years working with color guard ensembles across the country. She is currently serving her 19th season with Michigan Marching Band as the flag instructor. She also directs the Michigan Winter Ensemble competition color guard of the Michigan Marching Band. With the dance team, she lends her expertise in formations, transitions and precise execution. Noble-Pruett continues to work with numerous high school programs throughout the country and is a soughtafter judge around the United States for competitions. Each summer she is a featured instructor at Central Michigan University's drum major and color guard clinics.

15 Session Descriptions AACCA Safety Guidelines & Rules Jim Lord (Cheer) An overview of current and updated high school cheerleading rules. Both the AACCA and NFHS rules will be covered. Feel free to bring videos if you have questions about specific skills. For rules questions, Jim Lord can be reached at Advanced Stunts Tucker Hunter (Cheer) This class will focus on teaching techniques and tips for advanced group stunts. You will also get some insight into tricks that are legal for Advancing Team Technique Valerie Potsos (Dance) Technique requires strength, power, precision, and uniformity within your team. Coaches will learn exercises to take home to their team to improve the strength and power behind motions, improve speed and precision of the movements, and even how to help your team perform. Basic / Intermediate Stunts Tucker Hunter and Ben Schreiber (Cheer) Tucker will teach you some basic and intermediate stunts that will wow your crowd and excite your team. Everything from the hand grips, drills and progressions for your team to safely learn and perfect each stunt as you teach it to them. Bring your video cameras! Basket Toss Basics Tucker Hunter (Cheer) This class will teach you how to do basket tosses safety, drills to make your tosses successful, and tips on how to make them reach the sky! Biomechanics Behind Core Stunts Eric Gibson (Cheer) Most elite stunts are not efficient because of the incorrect anatomical positions used in the core stunts. This presentation will explain in vast detail how to do the most rudimentary core stunts and correlate them to why your elite stunts are not hitting efficiently. This is not a core stunt class! This is a push your brain to the limit, conceptual understanding of what must happen biomechanically in order for your stunts to not exert more energy than necessary.

16 Branding Yourself: Using Social Media to your Advantage Valerie Potsos (Combo) This session is designed to help you understand proper use of Social Media in today s world. This course will help attendees understand how their digital footprint can either help them or harm them in the work place. From security to what to post, this course will help Social Media work for not against you. Building a Successful Program: Where do you Start? Ben Schreiber (College) Cheer and dance are more than just standing on the sidelines at a football game or basketball game. Cheer or dance is a full experience for everyone involved (coaches, athletes, fans and administrators). Whether you are just starting your coaching career or you are taking over a new program, this session will give helpful tips on how to build a program from all aspects! Choreography is More Than Skills Cameron Larsen (Cheer) Here you will learn everything it takes to create that perfect routine. Skills are not the only thing that makes a routine great! Collegiate Roundtable: Game Day Bill Boggs and John White (Cheer/Dance) Exciting ideas and effective crowd-leading and spirit-raising techniques will be discussed. Sideline skills, game day situations, and incorporating school traditions will be the focus of this session. This will be an interactive session for sharing ideas with other collegiate coaches. Collegiate Roundtable: Competitions and Camps Bill Boggs and John White (Cheer/Dance) How do you determine where and if you will compete? What camp is best for your program s needs? This will be an interactive session for sharing ideas with other collegiate coaches. Collegiate Partner Stunts Ben Schreiber (Cheer) In this class, you will learn proper partner stunt technique, spotting and innovative ways to get in and out of college level stunts. Creating and Implementing New Sidelines Joan Noble-Pruett (Dance) Coaches will be taught pom and hip hop sideline choreography that they can take home with them for use at football and basketball games.

17 Creating Raving Fans Phil O Neill (Combo) How can you turn your program into one that people are raving about? This session will critically exam all of the key players to making your team a success and creating a culture where people are raving about you and your athletes. Creating an Effective Emergency Action Plan Mark Fang (Combo) Being prepared in an emergency is extremely important. This session will help you create an effective emergency plan and define your role as the coach in an emergency. Creative Choreography Tips and Ideas Joan Noble-Pruett (Dance) Here you will learn everything it takes to create that perfect routine. Ideas for creative choreography will be shared and demonstrated. Dance Swap Shop l Jenny Durbin Smith (Dance) Be a part of this creative environment to share ideas, techniques, and dances with other coaches. Decision Making: The Role of the Coach in College Programs Bill Boggs and John White (College) As a coach of a college or university team, decision making is something you are faced with daily. The struggles of making the best decision is an ongoing process. This session will discuss strategies for decision making. Dealing with Parents & Administration Joan Noble-Pruett and Valerie Potsos (Cheer & Dance) Take home some great ideas and communication techniques to make each parent happy and have the administration eating out of your hand. Dismounts: Ending on a Positive Note Eric Gibson (Cheer) How much focus do coaches put on dismounts? A lot or NOT ENOUGH? The whole year comes to a culmination and we work diligently on hitting those elite stunts but the dismount is sometimes an afterthought. Was the dismount performed in such a way that we never have to worry about it? Learn how using slow-motion video reveals what happens in those quick two counts. This is a mind-blowing class that will inspire you to adjust your focus for next season.

18 Game Day: Putting the LEADER Back in Cheerleader l Phil O Neill (Cheer) Exciting and effective crowd-leading and spirit-raising techniques will be discussed. Sideline skills, game day situations, and competition opportunities will be the focus of this session. This session will include ideas for building traditions including using signs and school specific cheers and chants. Hip Hop Master Class Jenny Durbin Smith (Dance) A fun, intermediate hip hop class everyone is guaranteed to have a blast! Hip Hop and Tricks Jenny Durbin Smith (Dance) A fun hip hop class Come learn a few new tricks and hip hop dance ideas. How to Build Your College Program with a Mission Phil O Neill (Cheer & Dance) College cheerleading is more than just standing on the sidelines at a football game or basketball game. College cheerleading is a full experience for everyone involved (coaches, athletes, fans and administrators). Whether you are just starting your college coaching career or you are taking over a new program, this session will give helpful tips on how to build a college program from all aspects! Improving Dance Leaps and Jumps Joan Noble-Pruett (Dance) Learn some new strategies to improve explosion, height, and technique of your teams jumps along with some concrete exercises and strategies to take home to your team and improve their leaps and jumps this season. Inversions Cameron Larsen (Cheer) Because of the relatively new addition of inversions at the high school level, and due to the constantly changing wording of their rules, inversions commonly cause confusion. This class is going to teach you a safe and creative way to include inversions in your routine. Jump School Cameron Larson and Eric Gibson (Cheer) Come learn the basics to jump technique. Learn how to break down each part of the jump and exercises to improve your team s jumps.

19 Motion Technique - Cheers and Chants: How to Be Creative Eric Gibson and Ben Schreiber (Cheer) Are your motions blah? Come learn the basics of motion technique and how to turn regular sideline material into impressive game day routines or competition choreography. Preparing for Competition/Performance: The Mental Process l Valerie Potsos (Dance) Leadership & Motivation It Starts with YOU! There are lots of ways to lead your team! Sometimes you lead by being in front; other times you more effectively lead by supporting your team, being an example and staying out of the spotlight. Learn sport psychology strategies you can include in your team s preparation. Pushing Your Team Over the Plateau l Phil O Neill (Combo) Your team is a bit stagnant and needing a bit of a push. How far can you push your team? How do they respond? Know when to and when not to push. You will leave with new ways and ideas to push your team. Pyramids Cameron Larsen (Cheer) Here you will learn everything it takes to create a pyramid. Pyramid inclusion into routines will be discussed. From small to large pyramids, you will learn everything you want to know. Reducing Coaching Risks and Liability Jim Lord (Cheer & Dance) Coaching cheer and dance brings with it specific responsibilities. This session will cover those responsibilities and help you protect your athletes, your institution, and yourself. Relationship Building: Working with your Administration John White (Cheer & Dance) Focusing on various means to better define your many roles in this ever changing aspect of college athletics, this presentation will focus on a variety of useful practices designed to help you better understand aspects of you and your team s roles, as well as how to better develop your position and value within your department. The presentation s format will be fast and engaging, utilizing gathered advice from veteran athletic administrators and cheer and dance coaches, as well encouraging group discussion on some of these topics.

20 Running Effective Practices for a Successful Team Eric Gibson (Cheer) Receive the chronological and idealistic calendar based understanding of what will lead your team to a successful competition season. This presentation covers pre-season preparation through breaking the monotony of repetitious end of year practices. Do we need mental preparation for coaches before the first practice? How can we get into the wondrous minds of a young adult? Find some answers in this in-depth presentation. Spirit Squads: Working Together as One Phil O Neill (College) Have you tried over and over to work with the band and other spirit groups? This session will help you create ways to work together as one and create a sense of cohesion amongst all spirit squads. Strength & Conditioning Mark Fang (Combo) Bored with wall sits and crunches? Come to this session with sneakers on and ready to learn! You will get discussion and demonstration of specific exercises to improve the strength, power, flexibility, and core strength of your athletes. Stretching Out Your Season and Warming Up for Success l Eric Gibson (Combo) Do you ever run during practice? When during a game or competition do you just run? You may run on the field or onto the mat. Stop wasting time using the wrong muscles. This presentation will go over muscle health and dynamic stretching that will help protect your athletes. We will go over exercises and stretches that most have never seen before. This presentation could go on for hours because of all the possibilities. The latest concepts designed by Eric Gibson using anatomically correct movements, increasing white muscle fiber health and saving precious time. Successful Recruiting for College Spirit Squads l Phil O Neill (Combo) Recruiting can be a difficult process and even more difficult when faced with university and administrative constraints. This session will discuss creative and successful recruiting strategies. Hear what Phil has to share about recruiting, but also discuss the topic with all attendees. STUNT l Bill Boggs (Cheer) STUNT removes the crowd-leading element and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling. This session will teach you about STUNT and ways to incorporate STUNT into your school.

21 Talent: Recruiting, Assessing, Teaching l Valerie Potsos (Dance) The world of dance is a competitive one. This class will help you understand how to identify, evaluate and utilize the talent you have on your team. Working with what you have or recruiting for what you want can be tricky. This session will discuss all aspects of talent related to dance.. The Coaches Eye l Eric Gibson (Combo) This presentation will help you understand how athletes process information, identify learning styles of coaches and athletes, and understand the basics of the Coach's Eye app. Transitional Stunts Ben Schreiber (Cheer) Learn how to make your stunts fun and interesting to watch. Fun entrances, innovative exits and creative transitions from one stunt to another. Transitions: Bringing your Routine to the Next Level l Valerie Potsos (Dance) Learn a variety of ways to make you routines fun, exiting, interesting and challenging. Strategic placement of transitions will be shared. Tumbling Techniques: The Basics and Beyond l Cameron Larsen (Cheer) In this session, you will review and learn all of the elements of tumbling and proper technique. A focus will be placed on training methods and improving tumbling. What s New in Nutrition for Cheerleaders & Dancers Mark Fang (Combo) With all the hype and false information out there, it is important for coaches to understand the truth about proper nutrition for athletes. This session will address balanced nutrition, the importance of carbohydrates and hydration, and practical suggestions for coaches.
