13 BtN: Episode 35 Transcripts 01/12/09 On this week's Behind the News: Nippers saving lives in the sea Could a humble ant clear out cane toads? And from primary school to the red carpet the Aussie kid who s become a movie star. Hi I'm Nathan Bazley welcome to our very last Behind the News for the year. Also on the show today, Kirsty tries out some new games and learns a bit about Indigenous history, and we'll have all the highlights from But before we get to that, let s check the latest news. The Wire Australia finally has its two pandas. Wang Wang and Funi arrived from China on the weekend and have moved in to Adelaide Zoo. They've already decided they like Aussie bamboo and keepers say they're settling in well.

14 It's very rare for pandas to be let out of China and huge crowds are expected to see them when they go on show in December. *********** And Lego League has been held in Brisbane. The comp. challenged kids to solve a problem using lego and robots. This year's topic was transport. The world festival is in April. Water Safety Reporter: Sarah Larsen INTRO: The Christmas holidays are full of fun times like swimming and boating, but tragically it's also a time when we see a lot more drownings. In the past few weeks there have already been some near misses, but luckily there were some kids nearby who knew exactly what to do. Sarah found out how some school kids became surf heroes. SARAH LARSEN, REPORTER: It's got to be one of the highlights of summer - a trip to the beach and a dip in the water! But in the blink of an eye fun can turn to terror.

15 REPORTER: Every year about 300 Aussies drown. It can happen anywhere; at the beach, in swimming pools or in rivers and dams and it can happen to anyone. REBECCA: Even confident swimmers. I've been out there and had a bit of trouble, just getting tired. As you might have guessed from the red and yellow, Rebecca knows more about the surf than most teenagers. She's a Surf Life Saver. These guys are a bit of an Aussie institution, and there are plenty of Aussies who are still around because of them. Rebecca's already saved a life this spring, with the help of some quick-thinking Nippers; or junior life savers. Amanda was out swimming near the end of this jetty when she started to have trouble breathing. AMANDA: I have quite severe asthma and I had an asthma attack while I was out on the water. Things might have gone badly but luckily these guys were training nearby. JAKE: Jack and Ben we saw this lady just out past the jetty REPORTER: How did you know she was in trouble? JACK: Her head was like that above the water and I said are you OK and she said no I can't breathe. JAKE: So Jack paddled in furiously to get me and I grabbed my board and paddled out. So Daniel, it was me Lauchie and Daniel tried to keep her above the water by holding onto our board then the rubber ducky scooped her up.

16 Rebecca hauled Amanda into the boat and gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to get her breathing again. REBECCA: I was absolutely terrified it s probably one of the worst things I've ever been through but with a good outcome. The kids ended up winning a special award REBECCA: It s really good. You don't expect to get an award from something like that you just do it and don't expect to get anything from it. It s not the first time this season kids have saved someone from drowning. And they reckon it just goes to show you're never too young to help someone in trouble. One of the best things you can do to stop drowning is learn how to resuscitate, so Rebecca gave me a demo. REBECCA: Now do another 30 compressions. REPORTER: Oh man! It's way harder than it looks but if it saves someone's life it s worth it! But even if you don't know CPR Rebecca says there are ways to keep yourself and others safe in the water over summer. REBECCA: Swim between the flags or if there's no life guard then don't go too far out. If your parents are around stay near them. Just make sure you feel comfortable in the water. We can't all be Life Savers, but if you're careful you can make sure a trip to the beach doesn't cost a life. Poll

Cane Toads Reporter: Gina Marich INTRO: You may've heard about cane toads before - maybe you've seen them in your backyard. They're considered a pest and have wreaked havoc on native species throughout northern Australia and they're spreading quickly. Now the race is on for scientists to find a way to stop the toads' march, and one of our Darwin journos, Gina, has found out there might be a breakthrough. GINA MARICH, REPORTER: At a time when most people are sound asleep, this group of Darwin school kids are out on a mission to stop cane toads from invading their town. KID: I don't really like them - they're kind of, not gross, but not really pretty either. KID: I'm still kind of scared of them, they creep me out a bit, but you get used to it.

18 On the weekend these professional toad busters try to catch as many toads as they can. They stick them in bags, put them to sleep and then into the freezer. It sounds pretty brutal, but Nelani, Hayley and Ben say it's the most painless way to get rid of them. KID: You just do it cause they're around and you don't really want them around. Like cats and foxes cane toads didn't originate in Australia. They were brought to Queensland 70 years ago to stop beetles eating sugar cane crops. But the toads began to breed like crazy and spread all over northern Australia. They're poisonous, so when animals like goannas, quolls or crocodiles try to eat them, they can die. REPORTER: People in Darwin have done a pretty good job of fighting the toads, most nights they'll catch thousands, but sadly it's not enough. Scientists say there are about 200 million toads in Australia, and they're on the march, spreading quickly west. But now a group of experts think they've discovered a way to end the toad's reign of terror. Meet the meat ant. You've probably seen this little Aussie before - these are the guys who harass you at picnics and scavenge your leftovers. And when they run into a baby cane toad this is what happens. While cane toads are bad news for most Aussie wildlife it looks like they've got no idea what to do when they run into a meat ant! PROF. RICK SHINE: Native frogs are very good at getting away from meat ants they've had millions of years to work out that meat ants are a problem but there are no meat ants in Brazil where cane toads come

19 from so the cane toad just sits there, lets the ant walk up and more or less start ripping it to shreds. Professor Rick Shine and his team have been trying to solve the cane toad problem for a while and they noticed the ants attacking the baby toads next to waterways. So they're now working on ways to attract more ants to places where baby toads like to live. PROF. RICK SHINE: We're just trying to convince them that hey there's a really good food source just down there a little ways if you head down there you can probably get all the toads that you'd ever like to eat. He doesn't think they'll be able to wipe them out completely, but by reducing their numbers they might give native animals a fighting chance. The toad busters certainly wouldn't be sorry to see them go. KID: Because they're ruining Darwin, and I don't really care yeah. In the meantime, there'll be plenty more late night patrols to catch those toads. Presenter: Not exactly my idea of a good night out. 20 1. 2 years years years Answer: 35 years Presenter: The one that lived 35 years was in captivity. In the wild they live 10 or 15 years unless the toad busters get them of course! Indigenous Games Reporter: Kirsty Bennett INTRO: With summer finally here it's a great time to get outside and play some games. But have you ever wondered where your favourite activities come from? Across Australia kids are learning some Indigenous games which were created way before you were born. Kirsty wanted to have a go, so I went and filmed her. KIRSTY BENNETT, REPORTER: This is what most kids look forward to when they get a break from school. But whoever thought all this play could be so good for us! Experts reckon that play is really important. It helps us learn skills that we will need later on in life. Games can teach us how to be good leaders, make decisions and work in a team.

21 But have you ever seen this one? If you like touch football and chasey then this is the game for you. It's called "Buroinjin" and is a traditional Indigenous game. This is one of about a hundred Indigenous games kids are being taught in schools around Australia. It's designed to get kids active while also learning about Indigenous heritage. Not to mention it's loads of fun! ROBBIE CROWTHER, LONGJUMPER: It's a good way for nonindigenous kids to learn how we used to do different sports - back in those days you know using kangaroo skin to make a ball or possum skin and stuff like that. KIRSTY BENNETT, REPORTER: Are the games still around or are they dying out? MELINDA TURNER, AUSTRALIAN SPORTS COMMISSION: I think a few of them are still around so in the Torres Strait Island in Queensland, North Queensland in particular these games are still taught but unfortunately a lot of them are dying out. The Australian Sports Commission has put together the games on a DVD and sent them out to schools. Sports stars are also helping out. So I thought I'd give it a go. KIRSTY: Okay guys so who is going to teach me this game? KID 1: Can you even get dressed in the morning? KIRSTY: No I can't actually.

22 NATHAN: Kirsty are you feeling confident? KIRSTY: Yes I'm feeling great. NATHAN: Don't go easy on her. Once I got untangled I was out on the field. With the help of team orange I got to tap in my first goal! Then we were on a roll! KIRSTY: You seem to be all over me. What's your sort of tactic? AMY: Girls, you go for the girls because they are the weakest. KIRSTY: Oh really? It wasn't too long and I was ready to retire. NATHAN: How did Kirsty go out there? You saw her play and a lot of other people play how did she go? MELINDA: She was very good, very very good. Very coordinated that's what we like to see yes - no you did very well. KIRSTY: Thank you Melinda I'll give you five dollars later. This is the first time a lot of the kids have played Indigenous games. They reckon it could soon be a favourite. ALEXANDRA: Yeah it was pretty awesome. AMY: Yeah some more stuff to learn.

23 KIRSTY: What parts of the game did you like? What did you enjoy most? ANDRE: The running because I really like running and I would like to do sprinting and passing the ball. The games are pretty similar to sports that you already play - like this one called competition Koolchee. Nathan thought it was pretty simple, so he stepped in to help the boys. But sadly he wasn't quite up to my standard so his team lost. NATHAN: It's way too difficult for me. I'm going home Well I guess there's always next time. Presenter: I swear that never happened - must be computer animation or something. Terri-Ann Cain INTRO: Next up is a girl who doesn't need any special effects to seem like a sports star - she's doing amazingly well all on her own! The kids from Durack school in Brisbane have sent us this video about Terri-Ann Cain who's been breaking all sorts of records. GRAB

24 Terri-Ann is 13 and represents Queensland in track and field. She won the 100 and 200 metres for 12 year olds at the National Titles breaking the Australian record both times. She was also a member of the Queensland touch team that won the national championship. How's this for an interview technique too! GRAB Presenter: We ll see more of her in the future I bet. And if you want to see the whole video and the kids who put the story together head to our website. AFI Kid Reporter: Catherine Ellis INTRO: Now to another kid doing some great film work. It would be pretty cool to take almost two months off school and be the star of a movie. It would be even cooler if you got nominated for a big award for it. Well there is one Aussie school kid who's done just that and Catherine's met him! CATHERINE ELLIS, REPORTER: He may only be in Primary School, but 11-year-old Tom Russell is living his dream.

25 Here he is co-starring in a film alongside one of Australia's best known actors, Hugo Weaving! The movie, 'Last Ride' came out this year and since then Tom's landed parts in two more movies and been nominated for a big award! So how did he get here? TOM: I first started acting when I was six when my friend asked me to do a couple of drama classes. But what started as a bit of fun, quickly became his passion. A few theatre shows and a student film later, his agent got him an audition for 'Last Ride'. TOM: I had to do two scenes, which was very nerve-wracking because it was the first time I actually auditioned. With the student film I just talked, but with this it was really stressful. He had to learn a section of the script off by heart to present to them. Then there was a call-back audition for the best kids. CATHERINE: And what was it like when they called you up? TOM: It was really really exciting because I was actually the only person in the house and I'm pretty sure the neighbours heard me scream because it was so exciting and so when my mum went home I actually wrote a note saying guess what? And it said turn the page to see what and it said "I got the role"! Tom plays the character 'chook' and the story's about the relationship between him and his sometimes terrible dad.

26 They got to spend two months filming all over the Aussie outback. CATHERINE: And how do you get into character for a role like that? TOM: I have look through the script and my mum tells me what kind of person they are and I just think to myself ooh what would this kind of person do or say until I kind of get myself into a mode where I know exactly what I have to do. DIRECTOR: Okay Tom standing by. Tom was able to learn a lot from Hugo and the directors. DIRECTOR: Standing by. So Tom remember you can walk slower you don't have to walk very fast okay. They were very long days, often starting at four in the morning and finishing late at night. But it paid off - Tom's been nominated for an AFI award, which is Australia's version of the Oscars! CATHERINE: And then what happened when you found out you were up for one? TOM: I was just... when they said you're up for an AFI and I go ha? What's that? I had no idea what that was but after I knew it I got really excited. Tom will be gracing the red carpet alongside Australia's biggest TV and movie stars. CATHERINE: And what do your classmates say?

27 TOM: They say when you win say I'm your best friend. They'll all certainly be watching when the big night arrives - December 12! Presenter: Tom has also recently found out he's being considered for a role in an American movie! To hear more from Tom head to our website. But before you go - check out this quiz. School Spectacular From the screen to the stage and the Schools Spectacular was held in New South Wales over the weekend.

28 Kids from 250 public schools took part - in all about 3 thousand performers were on stage We caught up some in rehearsal. KID: I'm really worried. KID: How do you feel? These guys live in Cobar and had to learn their routines by correspondence But they didn't have to worry - the rehearsal and the shows went off without a hitch! Presenter: Great work. But just before we go for now let's have a look back at It's that time of year! Christmas is coming up, schools drawing to a close and BTN is finishing for another year.

29 NATHAN: But before we go we thought we'd have a look back at 2009 and some of the biggest stories we covered this year and we're getting these guys to help. So what do you reckon was the biggest story of the year? KID: Probably the bushfires. Yeah, that's hard to forget. The year couldn't have gotten off to a more dramatic or tragic start. But in amongst all that devastation we met some incredibly brave kids. ANNE & MICHAEL, BUSHFIRE SURVIVORS: Losing contact with our parents that was the hardest thing to take in but when we heard they were alive it was like a miracle. Sarah went to Kinglake West Primary School on their first week back after the fires and heard some amazing stories WYATT, KINGLAKE WEST STUDENT: All of a sudden it turned all black so it was like day time then 30 seconds later it was night time. SARAH: That was such a great school. And if you're watching, guys, I'd like to wish Kinglake West Primary and every kid affected by the fires the best Christmas ever. CATHERINE: Yeah, that goes for all of us. NATHAN - But it wasn't just Victoria coping with disaster, was it? CATHERINE: No, at the same time in Queensland, people were dealing with some of the worst floods they'd ever seen BRUNO, RESIDENT: I've been here for 68 years and I've never seen it like this before

30 KIRSTY: So what else do you guys remember from 2009? KID: Swine flu! That was something that affected a lot of Aussie kids. Schools were closed all over the country when kids came down with a new strain of the influenza virus. We met some that were in Quarantine. ALEX, YEAR 12 STUDENT: A girl at our school has swine flu so the principal told us not to come to school. KID: There was the earthquake in Indonesia Yeah there were a few bad news stories this year, a terrible earthquake in Sumatra and a tsunami in Samoa. KID: What about the plane crash? Lots of people were killed when a passenger jet crashed near Brazil and there as another tragic crash involving Aussies in Papua New Guinea. There were also terrorist attacks and conflict around the world and we heard a lot about climate change. NATHAN: But it wasn't all bad news, was it? CATHERINE: No! We met a whole bunch of great kids doing all sorts of things. SARAH: And this year was the 40th anniversary of the moon landing! NATHAN: Yeah, Sarah was pretty excited about that one! KIRSTY: We looked at some big issues facing Aussie kids

31 NATHAN: Finally, it s important to remember that bullying can happen at any time although school is most common. CATHERINE: And what about all the animals stories? SARAH: Yeah, Catherine had a few run-ins, didn't you? KIRSTY: And you forgot the most exciting thing about 2009! NATHAN: What? KIRSTY: I joined the team!!! NATHAN: How could we forget? SARAH: So what about you guys, what was your favourite BTN moment? KID: I liked the Dugong story. KID: I liked it when you guys gave the blood donations. KID: I liked the one when Nathan got tackled. KID: And when the pig peed on Catherine. SARAH: Of course, BtN would be nothing without you guys; the kids of Australia. Who are always amazing us with the awesome things you do and making news stories more interesting with some great acting!
