From me Heathers is a based on the 80s movie of the same name. And it s written by the same guy who did BatBoy, it s INCREDIBLY catchy and well put together. The movie stars a young Winona Rider, Christian Slater and Shannon Docherty and although it didn t do very well initially it has since become a cult classic. It has since been adapted to be a brilliant musical and the music is written by the same gent that did Bat Boy & Legally Blonde. The story is a typical cliché high-school story of love, life, sex and murder. Veronica just wants to fit in and be accepted by the Heathers (the three most popular girls in the school that all also happen to be called Heather). And things work out for her! For about one song. She is then cruelly cast out of the group by the alpha Heather, Heather Chandler, and her life quickly becomes a mess. From then on things twist and turn after Veronica meets JD and in they accidentally kill Heather Chandler and then make it look like a suicide. From then on there s more suicide, more killing, some bullying, a dash of homophobia, guns, violence and bomb-scares, all whilst the school rallies behind the dead Heather Chapman whom they rise to martyr status, despite her being an heinous bitch in life.

3 Vision I m going to leave this up to the director for the most part. However I will say that there are 25 named characters in the show, in the original production many of these parts were multirole, however with ourselves it means even with a big cast anyone in the show would likely have a named part. As you ll see by the pictures included within this pitch the set itself can be very minimal. Which, let s face it, is exactly our MO. It all comes from the actors and costume. Big bight and bold colours should be used. The movie had each one of the Heathers represented by a single colour (red, yellow, green), the stage version has built on that by giving Veronica her own colour too (blue). If we style everyone in a similar fashion and accompany it with some of our own spectacular lighting it would certainly create and incredible looking show. WWDN has historically always struggled for men and although the next show may be different it may not. Heathers helps with this as out of the top 5 cast members 4 of them are female, (3 Heathers & Veronica), Heather s best friend Martha is also female, there s also mothers and female teachers to play. If we struggle further then characters like Coach Ripper and Principle Gowan can also be played by a female. If we struggle further then male roles can be multicast (as originally intended) and female roles can be single cast. Pow. Note. This is a musical that is set in a school. And so in saying that, many of the characters are teenagers. At this time a lot of regular members of WWDN are in their 20s and 30s. This can be seen as a negative point. But to be honest I don t really see it as that big of a deal. Although it s set in a school there are plenty of older roles. There are plenty of teachers and parents and many of them all have songs or parts to sing. On top of that, many existing members WWDN can act in younger parts than what their age is. So, a lot of the roles could easily be played by current members of WWDN. But maybe more importantly, this is also a fantastic opportunity for us to bring in newer, younger members of WWDN into the fold. WWDN is a fantastic company that shouldn t die out if the original members ever leave.

4 Cast VERONICA SAWYER She burns to be both cool and kind, but doesn t know yet how to be both at the same time. Fierce sense of right and wrong, keen sense of ironic humor. Thinks she's an old soul, but she's still innocent enough to be blindsided by love/hormones (or shocked by cruelty). Voice: High belting required, up to Ab. Must have dynamic and stylistic range. JD He is darkly charismatic, compelling, attractive, charming on the outside yet very damaged on the inside. Keen smarts and strong inventive comedy. Voice: Strong, confident belt to at least an Ab, A preferable; wide emotional range. HEATHER CHANDLER Richest, hottest, most magnetic, cruelest girl in town. Relishes power and wields it like a scalpel no fear, no patience, no mercy. Voice: Strong belt to F or higher preferred. Mezzo for chorus. NOTE: In certain choral songs Chandler can switch parts with her other Heathers as needed. HEATHER MCNAMARA Beautiful, innocent, stupid, can be mean on command if Heather Chandler orders it, but actually quite vulnerable and fearful. Voice: Strong belt to Db, D preferred. Soprano for chorus. NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Mac and Duke can switch vocal parts as needed. HEATHER DUKE Whipping-girl of the 3 Heathers. When she finally becomes Queen Bee she wields power like a bulldozer. Alto for chorus. Voice: Strong belt to C, D preferred. Alto for chorus. NOTE: in certain choral songs Heather Duke and Mac can switch vocal parts as needed. MARTHA DUNNSTOCK Nicknamed Martha Dumptruck, the opposite of hot, confident, or popular. Huge and beautiful soul, optimistic even in the face of rejection. Voice: Strong belt to E or F, wide vocal expression. RAM SWEENEY - 17, Linebacker. Big, insensitive to the feelings of others, ruled by appetites. Voice: Strong Baritone, belt to G, some Falsetto useful. KURT KELLY Quarterback and Captain. Big, chiseled, rude, entitled, cocky. Mean, thinks he s the brains in the friendship with Ram. Voice: Tenor, strong belt to Ab or A, some Falsetto. NOTE: in certain songs Ram and Kurt can switch choral assignment if, say, Ram sings higher than Kurt. RAM S DAD/BIG BUD DEAN/COACH RIPPER - 40 to 45. Ram s Dad: Former football player turned suburban Dad, has never outgrown his glory days in high school. Hates weakness, but capable of soul-searching when tragedy strikes. Also plays Big Bud Dean: JD s single Dad. Big jolly personality that barely conceals the enormous rage bubbling just below the surface. Quite possibly a serial bomber. Also plays Coach Ripper: Stalwart, man s man; quick to defend his players. Voice: Baritone/Tenor power Country/Gospel belt to Ab, higher welcome. NOTE: Sometimes this actor has played Principal Gowan instead of Big Bud/Coach.

5 MS. FLEMING/VERONICA S MOM - 45 to 50. Ms. Fleming: Aging hippie teacher, still yearning for the day the Age of Aquarius reaches Ohio. Hungry for the spotlight, resentful of entitled youth. Also plays Veronica s Mom: easygoing, distant, yet capable of laying down the law. Voice: Great belt up to C, higher always welcome. KURT S DAD/VERONICA S DAD/PRINCIPAL GOWAN - 30 to 45. Kurt s Dad: Straight-laced, very conservative, also former football player. A simple guy, not book smart, you d be happy to share a beer with him. Also plays Veronica s Dad: Easygoing and distant. Voice: Strong Baritone/Tenor -- power Country/Gospel belt to G, even higher better. Also plays Principal Gowan: Rumpled, burned out, hates conflict. NOTE: Sometimes this actor has played Big Bud/Coach instead of Principal Gowan. BOY 1 - Bitter Geek A put-upon, bitter geek. Voice: Bari (up to F#) or Tenor (up to A). BOY 2 - Blowdried Preppy A blowdried 80 s preppy. Voice: Bass (up to E) or Bari (up to G#). BOY 3 - Hipster Dork Thinks he s Ducky from Pretty In Pink. Voice: Bari (up to F#) or Tenor (up to A). GIRL 1 - Goth Girl A sullen goth girl. Voice: Belt to at least C# (a Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus). GIRL 2 - Stoner Chick A fuzzyheaded stoner chick. Voice: Belt to at least C# (a Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus). GIRL 3 - Young Republicanette A tennis-playing, uptight Student Council type. Voice: Belt to at least C# (Soprano up to high A/B is also a plus). SIZE OF ORCHESTRA Medium (guitars, bass, piano, drums, wind a rock band.
