1 Chapter 1 : Renaissance dance - Wikipedia Renaissance and Cavalier Dance, English Country Dances. This Cd/Book set contains music and instruction for 10 English Country Dances from the late Renaissance and early Baroque period. Taken from the Playford manuscript, the dances in this set are quite popular with the dancers at many Renaissance fairs and with the members of the Society for. Court dancers basically referred to the dances of the upper classes such as Kings, Queens, Dukes, Duchesses etc. In the early court dances the Pantomime played a major part of these dances and by, the pantomime was all but forgotten. Dancing was a favourite pastime in the Renaissance period. These dances were formal, some were flirty or comical. The basse danse, or "low dance," was the most popular court dance in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The Pavane - was originally fast but it slowed with time. It was a sedate yet dignified couple dance. The Allemande originated in the 16th century and was favoured by the Germans, then eventually the French grabbed onto it. Some of the Allemande would find its way into the Waltzes and Square Dance. The grave and majestic Courante was a sight to see. Click a link to see more info on each of these dances. There were basically two types of social dances of Court in the Renaissance period. These dances were usually performed in circles or lines. All these eventually gave way to the American and English Ballroom dances which was the death bow to "Court Dances". Often times the dance master was also the local musician for the dances being performed. These dance masters sometimes would travel from town to town, while others stayed in one spot, usually hired by a king, Queen or someone who could afford to maintain a dancing master. Because most of these dances being done were more complicated than the peasant dances, only nobility could afford to learn them, so they became a statement of wealth and power. Fashion in ones clothing Clothing at this time created an impression of mass and bulk and sometimes decorative Swords, Rapiers, etc. Many of these dances with appropriate music and costumes are still popular today under different guises such as Ren faires, Renaissance Faires, Weddings The step used in the pavane survives to the modern day in the hesitation step sometimes used in weddings, RenaissanceBalls, Masquerade Balls etcetera. The Domesday Book Dancing in the middle ages was a very reserved practice as the church played an important role in the middle ages and did not approve of dancing. Eventually the church did approve and some dancing was implemented in some of the religious sermons. Instruments used while dancing was mainly drums and background lute, accompanied by singing. Other instruments also included bells, jingles, long drums, nakers or nakir: Medieval dances represent a rich culture from all over Europe and consist of many type and variations of dances. In this article we will explore the most common and popular forms of dances performed in the middle ages. Many of our modern dances are derived from these types of middle age dances, with mostly each country adapting the dance to suite each owns culture and can be seen performed all over the world. Unfortunately not many original documents remain on the procedures and steps of dances in the middle age time, and we can only assume how it was done according to the information which is available. Circle dances Carol The main type of dance practiced was the chain dance. Various names existed for the chain dance, depending on country. The Carola consisted mainly of people forming a circle while holding hands and dancing to singing. Men and women alternate steps and turns. Official Branle The word branle is derived from the French word branler meaning to shake. It is a dance performed where couples in a circle move mainly from side to side or in a line and change partners at given times. Estampie The Estampie replaced the Carola, or ring dancing by introducing line dancing where couples faced the public in lines and not dancing in a formed circle. Also more instruments were used, instead of singing. It contains jump movements. Its name derives from the Italian verb "saltare," which means to jump, according to musician and author Lou Manzi in "Guitar Atlas Italy: Your Passport to a New World of Music. Black Alman This is a passive dance. Movements are made in procession and mainly done in entrance to a court. Black Nag A lively dance performed by three couples using a verse and chorus style applied in country dances. Rufty Tufty Two couples dance this dance. They make many turns and inter connect with other couples as the couples join the dance. Line Dances Prince William This style of dance is a country dance and involves making figure eight movements around bales of hay. La Spagna This line dance differs by starting using the right foot instead of the left. The ladies are always on the right side of their partner. They move away from each other dropping their hands. They then move towards each other again, turn to face the line again and then join right hands again. The Morris Dance What is significant about this Morris Dance, is that it is the oldest dance which remains the same as it was since its introduction with King Edward the third. The Morris was danced in medieval times around a maypole with bells adorning their knees and carrying sticks representing swords. The dancers therefore dressed in character. The Jig The Jig was also very much like the Black Alman with several kick, jumps and aerobic type movements. Country Dances This type of Medieval dances are like types of folk dances. It is identified by line dances or circular dances with couples facing each other or facing the public in lines. It consists of plenty clapping and spinning. Scottish Dances Scottish dances are usually very lively dances with plenty circular moves and gliding steps. National Scottish dances consisted of the reel, strathpeys from the district of Strath Spay and flings. The Egg Dance This dance was named after a popular middle ages Easter game and dancing of the egg dance meant that the dancers moved between the eggs and try to damage as little eggs as possible. It was therefore performed during times of festivals and celebrations. It was mostly used in European courts and was full length shows with 5 acts, several entrees and each entrees having a quadrille. Quadrille This dance is a quadrille with 5 or persons participating, or 4 or more couples. Pavan The Pavan is also a slow processional dance, much the same as the Black Alman, but it is done in double time and has its origin in Italy. Farandole The farandole dance is also a line dance, but is recognized by its snake like Page 2

3 movements. Burgundian dance Burgundian dance is a dance from the late Middle Ages, usually played by a nobles. There were no floor patterns for the dance, but it was typically danced as a couple standing behind another. Again, the prominence of showing togetherness and a strong culture was portrayed in their dancing. Page 3

The most common formations are longways for as many as will, i. The longways formation occurs in over 12, modern contra dances [4] ; it was also the most popular formation in all the dance publications of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Circles and fixed-length longways sets are also very common, but the possible formations are limited only by the imagination of the choreographer. Thomas Wilson, in, wrote, "A Country Dance is composed of an indefinite number of persons, not less than six, but as many more as chuse, but six are sufficient to perform any figure in the treatise. In fact, there are numerous dances for two couples, and quite a few for three or five dancers. A figure is a pattern that the dancers trace along the floor, simple ones such as Circle Left are intuitive and can be danced with no prior knowledge, while complex moves such as Strip the willow need to be taught. The stepping and style of dancing varies by region and by period. Examples of some of the figures are provided in the Glossary of country dance terms. While some dances may have originated on village greens [10], the vast majority were, and still are, written by Dancing Masters and choreographers. Each dance consists of a series of figures, hopefully smoothly linked together, designed to fit to the chosen music. The most common form of music is 32 bar jigs or reels, but any music suitable for dancing can be used. In most dances the dancers will progress to a new position so that the next time through the music they are dancing with different people. Country dancing is intended for general participation, unlike folk dances such as clogging, which are primarily concert dances, and ballroom dances in which dancers dance with their partners independently of others. Bright, rhythmic and simple, country dances had appeal as a refreshing finale to an evening of stately dances such as the minuet. Howe, in, wrote, "The term "Country Dance" is the one invariably used in all books on dancing that have been published in England during the last three centuries, while all works issued in France within the same period employ the term Contra Dance, or in French "Contre Danse". As the authority is equally good in both cases, either term is therefore correct. The Country or Contra Dance has been one of the most popular amusements in the British Isles, France, and other continental countries from time immemorial". History[ edit ] A village country dance - engraving by Abraham Bosse, Country dances began to influence country dance in the 15th century [14] and became particularly popular at the court of Elizabeth I of England. Many references to country dancing and titles shared with known 17th-century dances appear from this time, though few of these can be shown to refer to English country dance. While some early features resemble the morris dance and other early styles, the influence of the courtly dances of Continental Europe, especially those of Renaissance Italy, may also be seen, and it is probable that English country dance was affected by these at an early date. This was enormously popular, reprinted constantly for 80 years and much enlarged. Playford and his successors had a practical monopoly on the publication of dance manuals until, and ceased publishing around During this period English country dances took a variety of forms including finite sets for two, three and four couples as well as circles and squares. These usually require a group of eight people, a couple along each side. Dancing in square sets still survives in Ireland, under the name "set dancing" or "figure dancing". For some time British publishers issued annual collections of these dances in popular pocket-books. Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy all loved country dancing and put detailed descriptions into their novels. But the vogue for the waltz and the quadrille ousted the country dance from English ballrooms in the early 19th century, though Scottish country dance remained popular. The quadrille evolved into square dance in the United States while in Ireland it contributed to the development of modern Irish set dance. English country dance in Scotland developed its own flavour and became the separate Scottish country dance. English Ceilidh is a special case, being a convergence of English, Irish and Scottish forms. In addition certain English country dances survived independently in the popular repertoire. 5 the Spanish and Spanish-American version of the French contradanse, became an internationally popular style of music and dance in the 18th century. The contradanza was popular in Spain and spread throughout Spanish America during the 18th century, where it took on folkloric forms that still exist in Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Panama and Ecuador. In Cuba during the 19th century the contradanza became an important genre, the ancestor of danzon, mambo and cha cha cha. Haitians fleeing the Haitian Revolution of brought to the Cuban version a Creole influence and a new syncopation. In Denmark the description "Engelsk" was used for both line and square dances of English origin. In the early 20th century, traditional and historical dances began to be revived in England. Neal, one of the first to do so, was principally known for her work in ritual dances, but Cecil Sharp, in the six volumes of his Country Dance Book, published between and, attempted to reconstruct English country dance as it was performed at the time of Playford, using the surviving traditional English village dances as a guide, as the manuals defined almost none of the figures described. Sharp and his students were, however, almost wholly concerned with English country dances as found in the early dance manuals: The first collection of modern English country dances since the s, Maggot Pie, was published in, though only in the late 20th century did modern compositions become fully accepted. Monophonic Dances The 14th Century produced a number of pieces of Dance music for which there is no extant choreography. The Salterellos are one important body of such music. There is very little evidence on which to base such a recreation, but it is a fun invention. This dance was originally written up in the Letter of the Dance. I have only provided the melody MIDI Format, PDF format and not a polyphonic setting of this piece because it demands a different monophonic approach to orchestration. Instead of thinking of bass, alto and tenor, think rather of drones, alternating musicians playing the melody and on improvised variations on the melody. Have fun and be creative, because a lot of the evidence on historic practice here is rather speculative. The only two 15th Century Balli and no bassedanza made it into the core repertoire: Gelosia is found in a number of 15th C Italian sources. There seem to be two different reconstructions of the dance floating around which disagree on the placement of one of the repeats at bar 7 or 8 on my edition. The two forms disagree on the second part of the dance where the first gentleman advances "three doubles on the left foot" and Reverences to the lady while the second gentleman does a salterello forward. The first form, which I will call the Brainard School after the reconstruction by Ingrid Brainard, has the 3 doubles and the reverence falling in two bars of music, the second gentleman does the reverence during the third and that repeats twice times. The first gentleman then does a salterello during the eighth bar which is not repeated. The first man must do his final Salterello at the same as the third man. There seems to be evidence for both versions including a bar in the music which may indicate the repeat at measure seven added by a later hand. I prepared two editions of this music set for alto and tenor recorders or similar instruments, one following the Brainard school with the repeat at measure 7 MIDI Format, PDF Format and one following the Sparti school with the repeat at measure 8 MIDI Format, PDF Format Although Petit Vriens is a 15th C ballo, musically it still has the feel of a monophonic dance in particular, it works very well with a G drone, so I have treated it as such in the music collection. I thought that there was a substantial hole in the 30 year collection in that no basse dances where included. This is of personal interest to me because I have been working on a project to provide polyphonic settings for the Burgundian Basse Dance repertoire. These are available from my Basse Dance page. Pavans and Galliards There are hundreds of Pavans and Galliards in easily accessible editions, but because Belle Qui Tiens Ma Vie appears in Arbeau as an example, it remains the most requested. Because it is such a simple and well known piece and easy to sing, I have given it here in the original clefs and included the lyrics. The Blue Pavan is my own set of variations based on a folk tune of a Pavan by Holborne. It is rather long if you take all the repeats. Countess Mara hosted on at the 30th Year celebration. Thus, we do not have many settings for the mixed and mimed bransles, although innumerable suites of Double, Gay and Burgundian Bransles exist. The double and single bransle did not make the core list despite the fact that they are often the first dance taught in many dance classes. My version of Horse Bransle had a few problems. Fortunately, Avatar of Catsprey? I managed to track down a few typoes and fix a few of the more obvious problems in my horses bransle. This piece also works well as a monophonic piece done with melody and G drone. War Bransle is taken from Phalese and is modified to fit the Arbeau repeat structure. This is the tune for the invented dance often referred to as the SCA Maltese. Almains Two almains were included in the 30 dances. Black Almain is the familiar setting Joseph Casazza did for Practice for Dauncing actually its an updated version; I hope Joe will publish his updates to that important collection soon. It is not included in this WWW site because I only obtained permission for one time use. Practice for Dauncing is available from: English Country Dances I rather think that the English Country Dances are over represented in the 30 year collection given that they really occur at the very tail end of what we consider the Renaissance and extend well into the following century, although the Page 6

7 music for several tunes occurs before their identification as dance tunes in Playford. They belong more with the Baroque dances than the Renaissance ones. His settings really sound like the Susato or Attaignant Bransles. Another good source for Playford dance settings is Marshall Barron who has done settings for all of the first edition tunes. Her settings have a nice Baroque feel, which while appropriate to the dances is not the best choice for Renaissance dancing. Her books are available from: Marshall Barron York St. For the 30 year celebration, I tried to encourage the musicians to buy this collection rather than duplicate that effort. The only first edition Playford on the core list in this edition is Rufty Tufty. Malice claims it works better with only one repeat. We recommend you experiment. I have provided the first familiar and third variation from that book. The tune is sufficiently close to Tomorrow the Fox will Come to Town from Ravenscroft that I have provided the setting found there. At least you will have a useful performance piece even if the dance falls out of favor. Other Dances The 30th year celebration included a number of dances which were not Renaissance dances, but were included because they had crept into standard SCA practice before we knew any better. Hole in the Wall, by Purcell, represents the finest tradition of Baroque dance. It is very difficult to dance it properly using the Pas de Bourre in this incorrect time signature. Marshall Barron did a very lovely setting of this piece for Letter of the Dance. Female Sailor is another late edition Playford dance. She is to be applauded for getting the ball rolling on early dance reconstruction, but this piece bear very little resemblance to any extant period sources. Mannschaft Pavan is rumored to be taken from the dancing seen in a movie Romeo and Juliet? The music is pieced together from several tunes, and this particular piece is an anonymous setting floating around in our old music collection. With diligence we have been able to trace Korobushka to the early 20th Century. It remains inexplicably popular despite the new wealth of period material we have. I can only hope that newly discovered and documentable dances like Petit Vriens can displace it. Closing Remarks As much as possible, I wanted to find settings for the dances which were 1 dancable, 2 playable, 3 listenable and 4 matched as closely as possible the Renaissance aesthetic of the appropriate period. As there seems to be an ever increasing number of people who want to try their hand at these tasks, I am working on a list of sources for period composing and arranging. I hope this will be available possibly over the World Wide Web soon. Unlike other collections, I have not tried to present work for a uniform range of voices i. I have tried to ensure that most songs can be played on some combination of recorders, so most other instrument combinations should work as well.
