Killing an albatross is worse than a curse! When I was young, I did a lot of fishing with my grandfather along the Texas Gulf Coast. One time I cast my line out and snared a seagull. I managed to reel it to the boat, and to make things quick, was about to kill the bird (quickly & humanely: I was never into torturing animals.) with a machete. Before I could raise the blade over my head, grandpa's voice rang out like a sonic boom. I thought the boat was gonna turn over. he came over to my side, and showed me it could be done gently, and the bird would calm down. After a few minutes, he got the line & lure off the gull, and away it flew, happy to be free. That's when he told me that it's exteme bad luck to kill a seabird. And I understood it. We were fishing in Cass Lake (northern MN for those who don't know where that is located). We were trolling for northern. Of a sudden the line dipped and the pole almost broke in half. After reeling in - we found a LOON had entangled itself in the line. Ugly birds really, but the most haunting cries. After cutting line and checking to make sure no further damage had been done we released it. It swam around a bit and dived back underwater after its dinner Back to horses. Some years ago when my oldest step-daughter was dating, a young man came who was a "great" horse person. We told him that if he wanted to ride the one mare he'd better be prepared because once saddled she wanted to GO and go now. He 'pishawed' that and with all bravado got into the saddle - off she went! Within a few strides he was falling off! The only thing hurt was his pride! To make matters worse, the mare stopped, turned around - walked back to where he sat on the ground and I swear she 'horse laughed' at him. Right now is a quiet time for them all as the Queen is on vacation. Chuck hadn't planned anything either so resting up at Highgrove didn't interrupt his schedule.
