1 Whitlock 09 line: G1, H1, 12, 38, K1: L1, M6 Charles L Whitlock Record of Death: [The data here is consistent with the information you have.] Charles died in Portland, ME 13 April 1903~ [The year actually looks more like However we know 1903 is correct based on his gravestone. Moreover this record is from the film.] Charles lived at 89 Myrtle St in Portland at time of death. Age at death is given only as 77 yrs. That is, the months and days spaces contain only dashes. His parents are listed as Jacob Whitlock & Rachel Allen. His birthplace is given as Frederickton, NB. Charles' occupation is listed as farmer. His wife presumably survived him, as his marital status is listed as M. [The form used calls for data on spouses only when the deceased was a female; thus his wife's name was not recorded here.] Maine VRs, , Augusta N? Isaac S Whitlock Record of Death: [This appears to be data you do not have. Isaac apparently should be N1, born just ten months after his parents married, as will become apparent below.] L Isaac is said to have been born 20 December 185Zvin Fredericton, NB. His death date was 5 May 1933din Calais, Maine. He was said to be 80 yrs, 5 mos & 5 days at time of death. [Presumably should have read "& 16 days"]. He is listed as having been a resident of Calais for 75 yrs, having previously lived in NB. [This suggests his parents removed to Maine c1858]. Isaac was retired and a widower at time of death. Isaac's parents are stated to have been Charles Whitlock, a lumberman born in Fredericton, and Sarah J Allen, born in NB. The informant was Stephen Whitlock. [This is prehaps his brother Stephen J or might have been a son]. ME VRs, [I have no knowledge as to the maiden name of Charles' wife. I do wonder though if there isn't an error here somewhere. His mother was an Allen and his cousin William married another Sarah J Allen, though the latter is 20 yrs after Charles' marriage. All possible, but warrents caution.] [I suspect Charles & Sarah had other children between Isaac, b.1852, & Isabel, b.c1859, who is the first child you have recorded for them. I presume we may be able to identify these other children, either in the VRs or in the 1860 or 1870 censuses.]

2 M6, N4 Thomas W Whitlock [Identification here not proven, but seems highly probable, as hopefully will become clear as we proceed.] ~J Record of Marriage: In Portland, ME 13 May 1899 Thomas W Whitlock and Jenine Whitlock. Thomas is 30 yrs of age & his bride 29. [I conclude this Thomas is N4 based on the middle initial, the fact the marriage was in Portland where his father is known to have resided, and the fact his age is consistent with the estimate you have for his birthyear.] Thomas' birthplace is listed as Woodstock. [There is a Woodstock, ME, but I suspect this should read Woodstock, NB, which is near the ME-NB border.] His wife was born in Marysville, NB, supporting the conclusion that Thomas is N4. This was Thomas' 1st marriage but the second for his wife. The groom is listed as S; the bride's space has a dash. [It appears that a W (for Widow) might have been written there initially but then erased.] You will have noted, I am sure, that the bride is also recorded as a Whitlock. That mayor may not be correct. In the next two records I shall present her maiden name appears to be given as White. Also her first name in the latter records appears to be Frances, though prehaps with a middle initial J. In any event, I am unable to spot JeninejFrances on the 09 chart as either a daughter or a wife of a Whitlock. Having been born in Marysville, though, it is quite possible she could have been one or the other. Thomas' ocupation was that of a marble worker. N4, 01 Record of Birth: [Unfortunately there was confusion at one time in the early 1900s as to whether the name of the infant was to be recorded or only the number of the child. The the case with both of the children of Thomas on whom latter was I found record.] Born in Portland, ME 26 May 1901~ female, living, 1st child. father: Thomas W Whitlock, b.nb, resides Portland, marble worker mother: Frances _ White, b. NB 02 Record of Birth: In Portland 31 March 1903, ) female, living, 2nd child. father: Thomas W Whitlock, b. NB, resides 48 Cedar St, marble worker. mother: Frances _ White, b. NB [Jan reads the middle initial as J, and after closer examination I am inclined to agree with her. Thus her given names may have been Frances Jenine. Possibly her maiden name was White and that both her husbands were Whitlocks.] [I found no further records on Thomas & Frances for the periods or ].

3 L10, M7, N8 Fredrick M Whitlock [Identification not proven but highly probable.] Record of Marriage: In Portland 20 June 1912'~(Intentions filed 17 June 1912) Fred Whitlock & Mary Hanrahan, both residents of Portland. He is age 20 & she 25. 1st M for both. Fred born Marysville, NB; she in Southeastern, Massachusetts. He was a hotel cook; she a waitress. [I conclude this Fred is Fredrick M based on place of birth, age at marriage, and your listing that his first wife was a Mary E ( ).] [I found no record of children born to Fred thru the period I examined, i.e., thru Did he prehaps move out of state?] N10 Wendell Charles Whitlock _~- Record of Marriage: In Portland 7 January 1918 (Intentions filed 31 December 1917) Wendell C Whitlock & Ethel Louise Sargent, both residents of Portland, both 18. First M for both. His birthplace birth of first listed child. as St John, NB On the record here [and on record of of birth of his second child his birthplace is listed as Marysville, NB]. Bride's place of birth is listed as Deering [a section of Portland] here, [as Gorham on the next record and as Falmouth on the third]. Wendle's occupation was as a machinist. [Note that Ethel's maiden name is given as Sargent on all three records I found. You have her surname as Melbourne.] N10Record 01 Ethelyn of Birth: May Whitlock In Portland, ME, 15 April 1919-~thelyn 1 May Whitlock, female, living, 1st child. Father: Wendell C Whitlock, b. 4 XX Andrew W Whitlock [Unidentified, but certainly a descendant of K1. Presumably is of the M or N generation.] [XX-M-(1) Bertha Walker] [L10 married a Walker. Is this possibly a clue to Andrew's identification?] Y1 Record Ruth K of Whitlock Birth: In Wells, ME 10 June 1902 ~ Ruth K Whitlock female, living, 1st child. Father: Andrew W Whitlock, b. Lower St Marys, NB, resident of Wells, Hostler. Mother: Bertha Walker, B. Bergees (?), NF (?), housewife. Fredericton, NB, resident of Wells, laborer. Mother: Bertha Walker, b. Newfoundland. XX-M-(2) Hulda S Lindquist Record of Marriage: In Kittery, ME, 4 December 1915'~~ (Intentions filed 24 November 1915) Andrew W Whitlock & Hulda S Lindquist. Andrew is age 49? [possibly reads 42], b. Frederick (sic), NB, 2nd marriage, divorced, resident of Oqunquit, ME [Wells written on side], motorman. Bride was 39, b. Sweden, resident of Frederick (sic), NB, nurse, her 1st M. Y3 No name reported (sic) Record of Birth: In Wells, ME, 12 May 1916~male, stillborn, 1st child. Father: Andrew Whitlock, b. Canada, resident of Wells, motorman. Mother: Huldah Lindquist, b. 5 James Whitlock -- unidentified Record of Death: In Mapleton, Maine, 2 February 1922~ James Whitlock, age 74, B: 1848kin St Stephen, NB, resident of Mapleton 50 yrs, marital status: D, farmer. Parents names unknown, parents born: NB. [ The D in marital status presumably stands for divorced. In that event, I suspect the divorce was from a second wife, as I suspect the Orilla below was likely his first wife. It is possible the D was used to mean that his wife was dead, but that would be nonconventional usage and unlikely.] M-Orilla Higgins? J Record of Death: In Mapleton, Maine 15 February 1893, Orilla Whitlock, age 49 years, 1 mo, 19 days, B: Wesley, Me, female, married, housewife, buried Mapleton. Father: Charles Higgins, B: Kennebec County, ME, farmer. Mother: Ruth Davis, B: Washington County, ME. [I suspect Orilla was the wife of the James above. James would have been about 45 at the time of Orilla's death, if James' age at death is correct. That would make him four years younger than Orilla, somewhat unusual but certainly not unique. Or possibly Orilla was the wife of a brother of this James. The James below gave the middle name Aurilla to one of his daughters, which might have been after this Orilla, who was, I suspect, his mother. Also James gave another daughter the middle name of Ruth, which was Orilla's mother's name. The James below named a son James, either after himself or his father or both. It is my conclusion the Mapleton Whitlocks were likely all part, three generations, of the same family.]

ME. ME VRst [The age at death in this record is somewhat unclear. The yrs might read 8t 0 or 5. Eight would make Beatrice the second childt born c Dec 1903 or Jan Zero would calculate to a precise aget give or take a day or twot to child 5 as of date of death. However, the names do not at all match. Five would place Beatrice's birth a month after child 3. Howevert while not named, that child was said to have been a male. Thus it seems most likely Beatrice was the 2nd child.] 3?? Whitlock ~ Record of Birth: In Mapletont ME, 28 November 1906, (blank) Whitlockt male, livingt 3rd child. [Sturges' plaes of birth & residence are unclear on copy I have and will need to be reexamined on the film. The next word in each instance may be Coner, but there appears to be a comma after Shelton & Ridgefield. I do not find a town by these names in either Maine or NB. There are towns by both those names in Connecticut, and that may well be the intended abreviation.]

11 [That Amos is possibly a descendant of Solomon is postulated on the fact that all other Portland Whitlock records found to date in this time frame were either descendants of Solomon's grandson Charles L, son of Jacob, or of his grandson William Joseph, son of Nelson. The latter's family record appears fairly complete. Moreover, assuming Amos was as old or older than his wife Ada, he was born prior to 1866, which is much prior to the date of marriage of William Joseph. The question, then, is whether Amos was possibly another older son of Charles L? If so, it is likely he was ten years or so older then his wife, born between 1854 & I am hopefull we will find further record of Amos in subsequent VRs.] Amos W Whitlock -- Unidentified, possibly a desc of Solomon Record of Death: In Portland, Me, 22 May 1912~ Ada Whitlock age 46 yrs, 3 mos.
