2 Trash & Treasure 2010 You won t want to miss our fifth annual Trash and Treasure Auction on April 20 th at the Maple tree Restaurant in McFarland. Registration will begin at 6:30 and the auction will start at 7:00. You re welcome to come earlier and enjoy dinner before the auction. Bob Harrison will again handle the duties of auctioneer. Bob s sense of humor always lends a special twist to many of the items, as well as to the auction atmosphere. Members and non-members have generously donated wonderful items. Trips by Roger Lapenter, Kip Vieth, and Ron Barefield are always the highlight of the evening. Hand-crafted items such as Stan Nichols folk art bird houses and Andy Davidson s woodworking are always popular. We have lodging in the Dells, adventure trips, etc. The list goes on. This year we are very fortunate to again have the Tight Line s guide selection of flies as well as dozens, yes dozens, of flies for many species of fish. Many of the tiers are club members, as well as invited tiers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky, and even Australia. The selection and quality of flies are outstanding. If you check out our auction list, you ll see spin and bait casting equipment from St.Croix, Fenwick, Diawa, and Shimano. Our fly fishermen will enjoy the selection of Sage rods and outfits, along with other fly fishing items. We ll have baked goods, maple syrup, Bucky Books, restaurant certificates, etc. Check out the extensive list in this newsletter and on our web site. Donations are welcome. Spring is also a great time to get rid of those unwanted items one man s trash is another man s treasure As always, this event is open to the public. Obviously donations are important, but even more important is that we have bidders and buyers in the audience. Please consider bringing a guest or two to assure the continued success of this event, our only fundraiser. If you ve attended in the past, you ve witnessed the fun that is had by members and guests each year. You can help the club by just showing up. The past year s contributions have been to the Kids On Ice program, Sauk County Youth Conservation Days, Fishing Has No Boundaries, The River Alliance, approval of funds for a landing on the Baraboo River, and the purchase of a projector for the club. WSA thanks all attendees and bidders for their generosity and support of this event. Without you, it would not be possible. Here s to continued growth! A reminder: only cash or checks are accepted as payment for auction items. There is also a catch and release season from October 1 to November 15 for hook and line fishing with artificial lures. 10. 5 DNR requests anglers assist with creel survey Mike Donofrio, who is the Fisheries Supervisor for the northeastern part of the state, has asked our club and its members to help provide information on their angling results on the Menominee River for this coming season. Please read the following information carefully. Everything you need to know is there, including how to contact Mike if necessary. The following pages (which you can print for yourself) contain complete instructions, a sample form, and the form itself. The data that our club members provide will help our DNR better manage this great resource that is fished and loved by many of us in the Wisconsin Smallmouth Alliance. I'm requesting your participation in a voluntary fishing diary program for smallmouth bass anglers. I'm providing some basic instructions in this memo. We're interested in any game fish you catch and keep/ release, but my priority species would be smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, muskellunge and sturgeon. We have enclosed some creel sheets (Form ). I'm also enclosing a sample creel form that was completed and the reverse of form has instructions. You should leave the master waterbody code blank. If anyone has questions or needs more materials, just call me at or michael.donofrio@wisconsin.gov. I would like lengths to nearest ½" of all game fish caught and total number of hours per trip (day) by everyone in your fishing party, for each species. Please keep in mind the following: Record the date, number of hours fishing/ day and use a separate data sheet for each day. I need accurate length (nearest ½ inch) of every fish recorded. Record lengths on all fish, not just big ones. Data that groups fish i.e.. 10 fish 9-14" is not usable and also makes the recording of individual larger fish invalid for including in a total length frequency summary. Record location or water name, see map, for daily fishing trip on each sheet such as: 1) Brule: impoundment or downstream of dam 2) Twin Falls: impoundment or downstream 3) Kingsford: impoundment or downstream 4) Big Quinnesec: impoundment or downstream 5) Little Quinnesec: impoundment or downstream 6) Sturgeon Falls: impoundment or downstream 7) Chalk Hill: impoundment or downstream 8) White Rapids: impoundment or downstream 9) Grand Rapids: impoundment or downstream 10) Upper Scott: impoundment Chappee Rapids to the Park Mill dam 11) Lower Scott: impoundment 12) Below Menominee or Hattie St dam If you fish two areas in same day, fill out two separate sheets and the same applies for other waterbodies. Thanks you very much for your continued support and inform me if you know of other anglers who would like to participate in this voluntary program. I would like all of the notebooks and data sheets returned to me by November 15, Thank You, Michael Donofrio Lower Fox/ Upper Green Bay Fisheries Supervisor, Bureau of Fisheries Management, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Peshtigo Service Center 101 N Ogden Rd Suite A Peshtigo, WI phone: (715) fax: (715) Michael.Donofrio@Wisconsin.gov
