4 It was a sunny but cool Thursday last December, so Fahd's family decided to enjoy a picnic at the sea-front. The children were very happy. They quickly put on their heavy clothes and went to the car. At the sea-front, many families were grilling chicken and meat. They had bought from the near-by restaurants. The blue sky was clear and beautiful. Flocks of sea-gulls were flying low over the blue water of the Gulf. The sea was calm and the white birds dived to the surface of the sea to catch small fish with their sharp beaks. On the green grass where people were eating their lunch, some cats moved around to eat what people had given them or left behind in paper plates. The family took shots with their video camera while the father went down to the water line to empty a plastic bag full of pieces of bread for the fish to eat. At four o'clock, the sun began to set and it started to get cold so Mr. Fahd drove his family back home. It was a very nice picnic though it was only for a few hours. He works as a photojournalist and lives in a village in Greenwich. His apartment overlooks a garden where he saw something very dangerous. On one of those long winter nights he saw a man killing another in the garden. Being disabled he couldn t help the victim, but he phoned the police who arrived too late. The star begins to blame himself because he couldn t do much to save the poor man who was killed. So, he thought that he himself has taken part in the crime. Actually, he s done nothing, but even the viewer starts to have this same feeling like the star s. There is also an important character of Thelma Ritter. She is a nurse who takes care of Stewart and even makes him sandwiches. She is very kind and humane at a time when modern health care has got too bad. A) From a, b, c and d choose the correct answer : The main purpose of the writer / author in this passage is to a. inform us about a crime b. tell us about the disabled rights c. criticize and evaluate the film d. persuade us to produce films
6 We left the airport and on our way to the city my sister discovered that she had left her suitcase at the airport, outside the customs. I couldn t do anything at the time, for the bus was heading quickly out of the city and my English was too poor to explain the situation to the driver. Meanwhile my sister was very worried, looking for something in her handbag. At last she looked at me sorrowfully saying that she had left our passports in the - suitcase forgotten at the airport. Something had to be done, no matter how bad my English was. Getting to the front of the coach by the driver, I asked him to stop. He didn't seem to understand me. He just smiled. I repeated once more hopping that he might understand what I wanted. This time he turned and looked at me, and as I tried to smile he drew up by the kerb. In no time I opened the door, dragged my sister behind me and found myself in the street running after a taxi. Fortunately we found the suitcase where we had left it. The only thing for us to do was to find our way back to the city. A) From a, b, c and d choose the correct answer: The main purpose of the writer / author in this passage is to a. tell us the story of the lost bag. b. advocate travelling by plane c. analyse the situation d. show his mastery of English
7 The Amazon river flows 6,400 km through five big countries in South America to empty in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the world s second longest river only the Nile is longer but it is the greatest in volume. When the river reaches the sea it discharges 220 cu metres of water every second. That washes the salt off the ocean 160 km out to sea. The mouth of the river was first discovered by Europeans, who were very surprised by its size, in Because it is so big, big ships can sail in the river for 6,300 km. Along its course the Amazon varies in width from 14 km wide to 1.8 km in some places. The Amazon is rich in fish, with something like 2,000 different kinds. There are the brightly coloured small fish like the neon tetra and discus, which are famous worldwide as delicious tropical fish. Some of the bestknown larger kinds are the large catfish. There is also the fearsome Amzonian fish which is called piranha. It was thought to attack and cause dangerous wounds upon men and large animals. But this is not the whole truth; this bad fish is more likely to finish off victims already wounded and weakened than to look for healthy prey. In addition to the fish, there are turtles, giant water snakes, fresh water dolphins and the gentle sea-cows. From a, b, c and d choose the correct answer : The main purpose of the writer / author in this passage is to a. classify the types of fish b. inform us about the Amazon river. c. advocate saving water d. describe how the Amazon was discovered
8 There are some people who just can't make up their minds about anything by themselves. They frequently ask the advice of their friends and then do the opposite of what their friends have suggested. Indeed they are so - stubborn.عنيد My younger brother Tom is such a person. He can never decide what to do and is always asking my opinion. I try to help him as much as I can, but he never takes my advice. Yesterday; however, I answered his question in a different way. "Look! he said, showing me a letter, What do you think I ought to do? The letter was to offer him a job. It seemed to be an excellent chance for a young engineer. Tom would be sent to Africa to work and they would pay very well, besides he would be able to travel and visit many interesting places free of charge. What do you think, bill?" he asked, "should I go? If I were to accept the job, I'd have to stay in Africa for two years. I might have to stay longer. But it would be a wonderful experience for me. What should I do?" "Don't go! I told him. "You'd be very unhappy. "Don't go?" He looked very surprised at my answer. As you have probably guessed, Tom accepted the offer. I don't know if he knew that I actually wanted him to take the job. A) From a, b, c and d choose the correct answer: The main purpose of the writer / author in this passage is to a. show how interesting life in Africa is b. inform us about the job of his brother c. describe his brother's way of thinking and taking decisions d. give advice to those who want to travel
