Under each test kit are the markers which show variations from the modal given above. There are currently 53 testers who fall within the MacRae/Dalriada group, two of which did not test at Family Tree DNA. As you may realize, it is difficult to get definitive proof on Scottish lines prior to the s as parish records mostly start about 1825 in the Highlands and the first Census is in Circumstantial proof is indicated by a dotted line. Our best resources are the published genealogies of Clan Macrae. The MacRae Project DNA site is at In the chart above, two modals are given--that for the Dalriada group as a whole which spreads across many clans, and that for the significant numbers in clan MacRae. Clans that have significant numbers of testers in their own unique Dalriada pattern are: Campbell (203), MacDonald (100+), MacGregor (101),Buchanan (66), MacRae (60). Many other clans whose history links them to the Dalriada Scots show smaller numbers. The Scots I modal, first identified by Mark MacDonald, is now attributed to the Kingdom of Dalriada. The Daliriadic royal line historically traces to Conor II (Conaire) whose son Caibre Riada allegedly married the daughter of Conn of the Hundred Batt.es Cabre Riada is said to have led a group of followers from Munster to Antrim (Ulster) during a drought. Conor s core kingdom was at Kerry, but at one point he was also thought to have been King of Munster. In 470, Fergus, Loarn, and Angus, sons of Erc the king of the Irish Dal Riata in NE Ireland, established the kingdom of Dalriada in Alba (Scotland). It is thought that Kenneth MacAlpin (d. 860) who united the Picts and the Scots (the name given to the Dalriada tribe) was of this same genetic line. This male kingly line died out in 1286 with the death of Alexander III of Scotland. Mounting circumstantial evidence indicates that the MacRaes are one of the clans that shows significant evidence of this heritage.

Note that the two cousins in the Bayne line have 4 different mutations betwen them. This suggests that their common ancestor, John is modal.
