7 FREE FLIGHT ends I cannot remember a week that has gone as fast as my first Free Flight Nats in Muncie, Indiana. Some people might question the time management pressures that some Free Flighters put on themselves by flying so many events. Just flying the number of events that a guy like Dan Berry does would be a challenge if everything went well, but when you have difficult retrieves to do, time spent waiting for the good air, hard-starting motors, and field repairs, the time to turn in your scorecard can come way too fast. The final morning started beautiful, but what little wind there was changed directions requiring that everyone and everything be moved. Free Flighters take this in stride because they have been through this so many times before. Today was the big Super D Gas Free Flights which are not only Text and photos by Bill Kuhl expensive, but require a lot of room for a typical flight. I had some of my best flying today in the P30 rubber event. My plane is a simple NJAPF airplane but, no doubt, I would have had max flights if I had set the DT properly. I watched other people take this event serious by using a bubble machine to detect thermals coming through; it might have helped. The point I try to get across to other modelers, not just for Free Flight (as I do Radio Control Soaring as well), is that winning isn t everything. I know at a more local level that many RC glider fliers have quit going to contests because they did not have the latest and greatest sailplane. That has not stopped me from entering.
