This is the 18th year since the opening of the Academy and High school, and the attendance for the past year shows the school in a flourishing condition. The number of pupils is much larger than ever before, and recalls the old days when Hampton Academy was prominent among the high grade sch00ls of the State, The fact that the sch00l now has a course of study which has enabled the State Superintendent to place it on

30 o. HAMPTON NEW HAMPSHIRE. the approved list, has increased the membership, five neighboring towns having added pupils of good standing to the number from this town. Quite a number of pupils are taking the college preparatory course. Several reference books have been added to the school library during the past year, and receive constant use. The teaching force remains the same as last year. Mr. Loring is a graduate of Bowdoin College, and well equipped as a teacher. Miss Cole is a graduate of Mt. Holyoke Seminary, and has long been one of our teachers; both are efficient and popular. We shall have to ask for the usual appropriation. Since the town is justly proud of its High School, we feel confident that there will be no hesitation in giving it the usual support. Your children need it. Without the usual appropriation the present efficiency of the sch00l will be greatly crippled, if it does not stop altogether. D. H. ADAMS, For the Committee. Hampton, February g, 1903.

31 o.~ ANNUAL TOWN REPORT, Report of School Board. The following is the report of the School Board for the year ending March, The Grammar School had the same efficient teacher as last year, Mrs. W. T. Ross; she has sustained her well earned reputation, and the School Board are well pleased with the progress made. The Center Primary School has been taught by Miss Flora Y. Joplin. She has been faithful and earnest, and has met with good success. Much to the regret of the School Board Miss Fannie Caswell resigned her position as teacher after having taught eighteen years in the public schools of Hampton. The East Primary School taught by Miss Annie Gookin has made marked improvement through the year. The North Primary School had the same teacher, Miss Etta C. Blake, The work done was satisfactory. There were so many children in the West part of the town, that the cost of transportation was found to be mere than the wages of a teacher, therefore the School Board decided to reopen the School there. The West Primary School was taught by Miss Addie C. Marston. The school made good progress through the year. The following is the list of books used in the Grammar and Primary Schools : Baldwin' s Reader. Supplementary Reading, Judson's Young American. Frye ' s Geography. Wentworth's Arithmetic. Colburn 's Mental Arithmetic. McMaster's History. Higginson's History.
