His son Robert also became a joiner. By 1851 they were paupers, Thomas was now 76 and Dinah was 70, they were living at Dog Kennels, Morpeth. Mary had married Henry Wight and they had 5 children with them in the 1861 census, as well as her mother and niece. They were living in Scotch Arms Yard, Morpeth. James Wallace was a witness at John & Catherine s wedding. John died in 1831 and at that time they lived in Blyth, but both John and Catherine were buried at Newbiggin. Archibold 1810 James 1812 Margaret 1819 <Mary Ann 1821> Ellen 1826 were christened in Blyth Catherine is listed in Trade Directories as the Innkeeper at White Swan Hotel in Blyth and as a ship owner. Her Brother, James Wilkie was listed as a Ship Owner and as a Tailor. Her son James was listed as a ship owner and a master mariner, as was her nephew Archibald Wilkie. Her newly wed daughter, husband and child were living with her at The White Swan in In 1851 she had her daughter Ellen with her and her granddaughter, Jane Stafford, her daughter Margaret s child. 3 7 7 Jasper Tate Rachel Wardell Jasper Tate Was Born Alnwick, Northumberland and Christened Sion Meeting House, Alnwick Was Born about 1776 Lynn, Norfolk Ann Short Bedlington, Northumberland Japer was christened at the Sion Meeting House formerly Bondgate Meeting Housealnwickterian In 1795, all areas of England were asked to put men into the navy to counter the threat of the French. Each area had a quota to fill and so paid men to join. Jasper was 19 and a shoemaker in Alnwick when he volunteered. The long war against the French which began in 1793 and lasted 20years, overshadowed the lives of people who made their living from the sea. James 1799 Jasper 1801 William 1803 <James 1810> Charles 1813 were christened in North Blyth (Bedlington Parish) On the birth records for their children, Jasper is said to be a native of Alnwick and Ann, a native of Lynn, Norfolk whose surname was Short. The family were living in North Blyth so were the family of William Fox (mariner) from Lynn his wife was a Short from North Blyth. His son Cuthbert Fox appears as a witness on the marriage record of Ann s son, James. From Norfolk to North Blyth In Appendices: Jasper Christening Marriage record Northumberland Naval Quota 1795 In the 1700s most of the port s trade was done by small ships from Lynn, Whitby and Scarborough. Their masters were lavishly entertained at Blyth while their ships were loaded. 19

He was accidentally drowned in the harbour in There is a record of his burial at Horton, but only his name and the date are given. There is no evidence of a stone having been erected Barony, Glasgow, Lanark <Margaret 1814> Ann 1819 were christened in Glasgow The family story is that after her husband s death Sarah decided to return to Scotland with her family. Her daughter, Margaret, had met James Tate and they decided to marry so that she could stay in Blyth with him. William s parents are possible, but we know little about this Scottish family. Was Born about 1782 Earsdon Died Dec 1865 Blyth, Northumberland Jane Brockett Earsdon, Northumberland The Richardsons had originally moved to Blyth by horse and cart from Eyemouth. There were stories about how the original family had come from Burntisland near Edinburgh. Other than entries in the family bible, very little is known about George. On his son, Jo hn s christening record he is down as a mariner, native of Eyemouth. It is recorded in the Bible, that he lost his life on the ship Europe off the coast near Tunis, Africa. William Steel was a witness at his wedding. Margaret 1804 <John 1806> William 1810 Jannet 1813 Catherine 1817 Elizabeth Steel 1819 illegible 1821 Jane 1823 were born in Blyth (Names recorded in Family B ible) In Appendices: Family Bible From the family bible, Jane is the daughter of Thomas Brocket of Blyth. Jane was in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census. In 1841, she was living in Tate Row, Blyth, with daughter Margaret. By 1851, she was living in Ridley Terrace by herself. Then in 1861, her son, William, who was a ship s carpenter and unmarried was living with her in Northumberland Street. The Staithes, Blyth 21

In the 1757 Militia Act (George II) Parliament directed that militia regiments be re established, after a period of dormancy, in the counties of E ngland and Wales. James 1768 Robart 1769 Mary 1771 <Jasper 1774> Rachell 1777 were christened in Alnwick Berwick Tweedmouth Northumberland It was realised from the outset that insufficient volunteers could be persuaded to come forward to serve in the ranks. Alnwick Accordingly, a form of conscription was introduced in which parishes would make lists of adult males and hold ballots to choose some of them for compulsory service.
