Ba mhaith liom fáilte speisialta a chur roimh na fóirne ó Leach Sná agus Cill Mhaoile sa chluiche sinsear agus Dr. Crócaigh agus An Neidín i gcluiche Ceannais Craobh Idirmheánach an Chontae. Ta súil agam go mbeidh cluichí iontacha agus sportúil againn inniu. Ciarraí Abú Congratulations to the Kerry Senior & Minor Football teams and their management teams on winning the double at Croke Park last Sunday. Sam Maguire & Tom Markham Cups are most welcome in Kerry. Thanks to the supporters at home and abroad. Your confidence in us, your patience and financial support has well been rewarded. Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Jack O Connor, thanks for all the joy you gave us with your inspirational management. I wonder will Éamonn line out for his beloved native club Lixnaw in today s County Senior title! You d never know. Eamonn won 3 County Senior Hurling Championships with Lixnaw in 1999, 2005 and County Hurling Final Day Today s Garvey s Super Valu County Senior Hurling Championship Final sees the great rivalry of two neighbouring clubs taking centre stage on this, the highlight of our hurling year in Kerry. When they last met in the final Lixnaw claimed the 2007 title and they are back in the final for the second successive year having beaten the 2013 champions St. Brendan s in the semi-final after a replay. As in last year s County Final between the teams it took a replay to give us a winner and this time Lixnaw have come out on top. Kilmoyley last contested the final in 2009 and are worthy contenders in this year s final beating a fancied Ballyduff team in semifinal. Previous to their appearance in today s final Kilmoyley were the dominant club in Kerry in the last decade having won six County Finals from 2001 to Winning the Neilus Flynn Cup would be a crowning glory to a wonderful year for both teams. We wish the best of luck to both sets of players, mentors and officials in today s finals. In welcoming the referees and their officials I hope that they too have an enjoyable day and wish them the very best in the important role that they have in our games. For the hurling clubs and hurling enthusiasts in Kerry, today is your big family day. It continues to be a wonderful day for families as people of all ages enjoy this special occasion on our club fixtures calendar. The ancient game of hurling is embedded in your tradition. Hurling is your game and your passion. Savour that atmosphere today at Austin Stack Park. There are players on both teams today who have made significant contributions this year to the Kerry Senior Hurling team, the Kerry Under 21 and Minor Hurling teams. Thanks to our Hurling Games Development Administrators, Maurice Leahy in North Kerry and David O Dea in South Kerry. The Parnells Club in Tralee continues to expand and flourish. This hurling initiative in Tralee is a very important project for the development of hurling in the county. Well done to everyone involved and may your Trojan efforts be rewarded. The County Intermediate Championship Final brings the teams from Dr. Crokes and Kenmare to centre stage on County Final day. We hope they too enjoy the part they are playing in this very special of hurling. County Final day is a very big occasion for our two referees, their linesmen and their umpires. We wish all of them well and hope they will have happy memories of County Hurling Final day. Schools Contribution to Hurling Development Causeway Comprehensive School continues to make a massive contribution to the overall development of Hurling in the County and we wish them well in their inter schools competitions this year. We also sincerely thank the teachers who look after teams in the National Schools competitions and in the Post Primary Schools competitions. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude for their contribution to the success of county teams at all levels. 2

3 Inter County Hurling On the national stage, this year has been yet another great year for hurling. Some great games entertained the hurling enthusiasts since May and given the added exposure of the game overseas through Sky Sports and GAAGo.ie, hurling is gaining its rightful status as a magnificent field game. A comment on twitter during the drawn All-Ireland Hurling Final expressed the view - Hurling is the greatest sport of all time. I have absolutely no idea what is happening but it s great. At the time writing the All-Ireland Final replay was pending. If the drawn final was anything to go by, yesterday s replay would find it hard to equal it for its high level of skill and excitement. Today we know if it did live up to expectations. While the top tier competitions deservedly grabbed all the headlines and plaudits, our Kerry inter county teams made their own significant contributions to this brilliant summer of hurling. In the Chirsty Ring Cup we reached the final again this year and were unfortunate to lose for the second successive year. It was heart breaking for the players and management who had done so well all year. Thanks to our Senior Team manager, Eamon Kelly and his management team, who in their first year in charge led the team to retain their status in the Allianz Hurling League and were unfortunate to lose the Christy Ring Cup Final. Fáilte go dtí Craobh Sinsir Iomána Chiarraí 2014 Welcome to supporters, players and mentors of both Lixnaw and Kilmoyley for the 2014 final of the Kerry Senior Championship. So far this championship has been full of surprises as the underdogs in both semi-finals have proved. The hurling championship this year has been full of great games and epitomise what the GAA in Kerry is about. The community spirit in the hurling championship is unique, we in Garveys also believe in local and community and that is why we are such proud sponsors of the Kerry County senior hurling championship. Supporting local is key and we would like to thank you for your custom in We would also like to thank Ger McCarthy and Maureen O Shea from the county board for the assistance and support they have given us during the championship. We really hope, regardless of the result, you enjoy the day and that we have a fantastic game of hurling. Beir Bua, Tomás Ó Gairbhí Congratulations to the Kerry Minor Hurling Team and their management led by manager, Ian Brick on winning the All-Ireland Minor B Final. Thanks also to U21 manager, Joe Walsh. Congratulations to the players and coaches of all the Hurling Development Squads who also had very encouraging victories during the summer in various inter county competitions. It is important also to pay tribute to the Hurling Officer, Ger McCarthy and Vice Chairman, Ger Galvin for their work this year with our Inter County Teams. SPONSORS Garvey s Super Valu are in the third year of their sponsorship of our County Senior Football and Hurling Championships, we are very grateful for their contribution and support, and welcome their representatives to today s final. I also thank Chapter 23 Irish League of Credit Unions for their sponsorship of our County Football and Hurling Leagues. Few sporting events in Kerry have the passion, excitement and colour of a County Hurling Final day, Let s hope that we have two games that befit the occasion today, that everybody including players, officials and supporters have an enjoyable day out and above all that Hurling will be the real winner. 9 A Word from Gerard McCarthy kerry HuRlING Hurling in the county brought many enjoyable moments during the year with the appointment of new Senior and minor management teams. The senior team under Tipperary natives, manager Eamon Kelly and coach Brian Horgan, selectors, former Kerry greats D.J. Leahy and Tom O Connell, along with statistician John Lucid - all diehard hurling men - and former Tipperary All Star goalkeeper Brendan Cummins, led this Kerry team to League success in winning Division 2 of the Allianz League in Semple Stadium over firm favourites Carlow managed by former Kerry manager John Myler. This was a victory that players and management will savour for a long time. The Christy Ring championship was next up with victories over Derry and Kildare and a semi final win over Mayo which set us up again for a final spot against Kildare. It was our third meeting with the county in 2014 having had two victories in our previous meetings but Kildare came out on top in the final. Yes, a disappointing finish to the year, but the positives are that having won a national title in Semple Stadium must be the highlight of the player s year. As Hurling Officer I richly thank the management for all the work and commitment through-out the year - roll on 2015! MINOR - Our minor team had a great year under new manager Ian Brick and selectors Aidan O Mahony and Stephen Goggin. They played in the Munster championship against Cork and Clare - tough going but a lot of experience was gained. After regrouping for the All Ireland B series they really put in a big effort and doing so won the final by defeating a strong fancied Meath side to complete a remarkable three-in-a-row of titles. Ballyduff player Daniel O Carroll was a part of all three; congratulations Daniel on your achievement. I would like to thank the management for their hard work and their attention to detail and finally I would like to thank Seamus O Regan (Big Jim) for all his hard work in logistics and back up supporting the minor and senior teams. u21 HuRlING - This team, under the management of manager Joe Walsh and selectors Tom O Connell, John Lucid and D.J. Leahy, surrendered their title to Roscommon who advanced to a final meeting with Kildare, a game Kildare won. I thank the management for their commitment to this team. This competition still has its problems and is of little use to Division 2 counties as there is a lack of quality games. We have made representations to put a new 8 county championship in place in order to give players at this level a better step up to the senior ranks. COACHING - Coaching, and getting new players playing the game of hurling in the schools and clubs, is still getting stronger under the hard work of our two coaches, Maurice Leahy (North) and David O Dea (South) with large numbers attending the summer camps. This is very encouraging for the future of Kerry hurling; well done Maurice and Dave. DEvElOPMENT SquADS - I thank our squad managements - U14 John Lenihan, U15 Jerome O Sullivan and U16 John Fitzgerald for their time and commitment in preparing these teams - well done lads. Playing against the strong counties gives all these young players the platform for future success. COuNTy FINAl - Today s finals bring all the ingredients for a great days hurling with four great teams taking part. First up, the meeting of two South Kerry clubs in the Intermediate final - Dr Crokes and Kenmare - this should be a close encounter with an extra incentive added with the winners advancing to the Munster Junior championship. The best of luck to both teams and their managements. The senior final brings two great traditional teams together and both teams have given great players to inter county teams over the years. This will be a great game with Lixnaw looking to go one better than 2013 and Kilmoyley looking to get their hands on the Nelius flynn Cup following their last victory in Ii take this opportunity to wish both teams, their managements and clubs, the very best of luck today - may hurling be the real winner today. Finally, I would like to thank Tommy O Connor Hurling P.R.O. of the PR & Marketing Committee, for his dedicated work and all our supporters who followed our inter-county teams all the year along with anybody that helped in any way. I hope everybody has a great day of hurling in Austin MAN OF THE MATCH County semi final v Ballyduff DOUGIE FITZELL Stack Park. 11 NA CAPTAEN CAPTAEN CILL MHAOILE SEANIE MURNANE Seanie Murnane will Captain Kilmoyley in today s Co Hurling Final. Indeed when the players were asked to nominate a player early this year, Seanie s name was unanimous with the group and he has led by example all year. He has excelled in the role, lead from the front and has got the respect and commitment from the entire group. Seanie will play his 4th Co Hurling final today and he holds 2 Co Senior hurling championships, 1 U21, Minor, league and North Kerry medals and underage medals. He comes from a proud family tradition and will be joined on the panel by his brothers Maurice and Tom. His older brother Joe holds 5 Co Championship medals and his father Sean holds 2 Co Medals and is a former Chairman of Kilmoyley hurling club. Seanie states that his biggest influence in his career to date was his family and no wonder with the tradition of hurling in the family. His only sister Jackie is also very involved in sports. He works as a plant operator in the family business. If Kilmoyley were to be victorious today, Seanie will join Maurice and Tom in lifting the Neilus Flynn, some record that would be, but knowing Seanie the only record he wants is Kilmoyley number 23 and bringing the cup back to the parish with his proud team mates who he has the utmost respect for. CAPTAEN LEAC SNÁ MAURICE CORRIDAN I was born in 1981 and have lived in Finuge since then. I've 2 brothers and 3 sisters and along with my mother Norma and Father Jim all will be at the final today. I first started playing hurling and football in Dromclough NS and then progressed through the age groups in Finuge and Lixnaw. Football is my first love and picked up various medals with Finuge from early days. I was part of the Kerry Football panel that won the All Ireland in With Finuge we won 3 Kerry championships, 3 Munster and an All Ireland title. I also hold a senior county championship medal with Feale Rangers. In 2005 I won my first of 2 county hurling championship medals, the second in 2007, unfortunately however the 2005 final ended prematurely for me as I fractured and dislocated my ankle the day before I was due to fly out to Austrialia. This will be my 7th county hurling final and its a huge honour for me to captain this team. There are huge leaders on this panel so to be chosen as captain by the club officers is a great honour. I won an All Ireland colleges medal with Pallaskenry in 2005 which I also captained. Its a big weekend for me overall as I am getting married on the Saturday to Karen McCarthy. Hopefully come Sunday evening I will have good reason for a double celebration. 11

13 Na réiteoirí SENIOR REFEREE: John Sexton (Corcaigh) The Ballyhea clubman is no stranger to refereeing duties at county finals and his commitment to his craft was in evidence a couple of years ago when he made the 300-mile round-trip to take charge of the Leitrim Hurling Final. This season Sexton was assigned a couple of fixtures in the top division of the Allianz League as the Waterford-Galway tie at Walsh Park and the Parnell Park clash of Dublin-Kilkenny came under his jurisdiction. Earlier in the year John was assigned two games in the Waterford Crystal Cup including the final between Tipperary and Clare at the Gaelic Grounds. In 2013 he was the top official for the AIB Club final between St Thomas and Kilcormac-Killoughey at Croke Park. John has previously refereed the 2008 final and last years replayed final between St Brendans and Lixnaw. 14 COUNTY FINAL REvIEW KILMOYLEY versus LIXNAW sylvester hennessy Kerry s eye GAA Correspondent Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship Final Preview - lixnaw and kilmoyley Familiar Rivals! Lixnaw and Kilmoyley have become familiar rivals in this decade. Since 2010 they have met over the past 4 years on 5 occasions and Lixnaw have won 4 of those matches with the other ending in a draw. This has led many to call Lixnaw, Kilmoyley s bogey team, but it is something that their manager Joe Walsh very much refutes. Look first and foremost this is a new Kilmoyley team; We met in last year s semi-final and drew and then Lixnaw won the replay but our team has changed beyond recognition over 12 months. We have a number of young and up and coming players and we didn t really care who we played in the final once we were in it. We re delighted to be there, nobody expected us to make the final, we were written off by everyone but now that we are there everyone in the parish of Kilmoyley wants us to win it. Joe Walsh has actually played in 6 Kerry county finals and won 4 but his fantastic record pales in comparison to his opposite number, Limerick legend Ciarán Carey. Carey is no stranger to county finals. The former Patrickswell giant played in 13 Limerick senior finals winning 9. His first final was as a 17 year old back in 1987 and he played in his 13th final in He has never experienced a Kerry county final before but the All Star has always had a soft spot for the county. I came down to Kerry for a number of reasons. My grandfather John Carey was from Waterville so I have Kerry blood and I always had a love for Kerry. I was offered a number of high profile clubs in Tipperary and Limerick but I have always gone with my gut and something told me that Lixnaw would a perfect place to hone my skills as a club manager. I mean if you want to test your abilities as a coach then this is perfect because it would have been much easier to take on a big club at home or in some of the surrounding counties. It will be fascinating to see how Carey will do against his opposition mentor s Walsh and John Meyler. The Wexford man s return to Kilmoyley is seen by many as the catalyst behind this new look Kimoyley squad s unexpected run to the county final. Kilmoyley have already dismissed the challenge of two pre tournament favourites in Ballyduff and Causeway. For that alone they deserve respect but there is something about Lixnaw this year that makes you feel that they will avoid losing a 4th final in 5 years. Lixnaw have huge experience down the spine of their team. Trevor McKenna, the Corridans, John Griffin, Paul Galvin, James Flaherty and Michael Conway have appeared in a number of finals in both football and hurling. When you add their young and upcoming talent this could prove to be the perfect mix for success. Kilmoyley have loved upsetting the odds this year. They would no doubt dearly love to get one over Lixnaw on this occasion especially in light of the fact that have failed to beat Lixnaw in 5 attempts in the championship in this decade. Kilmoyley dominated the last decade in Kerry hurling winning 6 of the 10 titles on offer. The question is can their new generation write a piece of their own history. The Collins brothers, the Fitzells, the Savages, Flor O Sullivan, Sean Dowling and Paudie O Connor have all sampled success at under age level. They can also call on the experience of Tom and Seanie Murnane and Sean Maunsell. This should be another close run affair between two teams who will know each other very well. Lixnaw deserve the title of favourites however. They have beaten the reigning champions after two epic battles and they are also appearing in their 4th final in 5 years. In the opening round back in the third weekend in July Lixnaw had a straightforward seven point win over Ballyheiuge, Kimoyley defeated Causeway in a very poor game of hurling, the returning Crotta had a 5 point win over a disappointing Abbeydorney and St Brendan s were far too strong for a lack lustre Ballyduff. The winners round in Round 2 saw Kilmoyley record an expected victory over Crotta while St Brendan s continued their good form with a one point win over Lixnaw after extra time. This was a real cracking contest but the quality of hurling overall remained poor. In the Losers round Abbeydorney knocked Ballyheigue out of the championship while Ballyduff saw off Causeway with something to spare. Ballyduff eased to victory over Crotta in the quarters while Lixnaw were just about too strong for an improving Abbeydorney. In the semi-finals both games were poor contests. Kilmoyley shocked a Ballyduff side who had only one scorer in the entire game, Bobby O Sullivan. In the other semi-final over familiarity led to a turgid encounter between Lixnaw and St Brendan s. The match ended 0-9 apiece but thankfully the replay produced the best quality game of the championship. Lixnaw prevailed by a one point margin. The general consensus by the hurling fraternity is that this year s championship lacked a little bit of bite and flair. Both Ballyduff and Causeway were major disappointments while Abbeydorney, Crotta and Ballyheigue have a good bit of work to do to be considered serious title challengers. St Brendan s to their credit defended their title well but few would argue that the best two teams in 2014 are in the final. What is needed now is a quality final to give us a fond lasting memory of the 2014 Garveys SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship. 17 Cathaoirleach LEAC SNÁ PAUL WALLACE As chairperson of Lixnaw GAA club I take great pride in addressing the readers of this 2014 County Final Programme has been a great year for the Parish so far, our minors have also reached their county final and this was further added to last weekend when we saw our own Eamonn Fitzmaurice lifting Sam Maguire once again. The momentum and dedication to the game in our club has once again surpassed all expectation this year. We have a great amalgamation of both youth and experience on the Lixnaw panel and they have all brought great entertainment and honour to the Parrish in their achievements to date. We acknowledge the great achievements of Kilmoyley, our opponents here today, and we hope for a final filled with tension and good sportsmanship, but above all that both teams leave the field of play today having given their all in the name of their jersey which they have the privilege of wearing. Our coaching and management team, comprising of Ciaran Carey, Mark Foley, Benny Stack, Jerome McKenna and Frank Thornton, have shown steely regard for the improvement and advancement of the game of hurling in Lixnaw. We as a club are extremely grateful to the time and effort shown by the afore mentioned. Congratulations to the Kerry minor hurlers on winning the All Ireland Minor Hurling B championship, completing three in a row. The squad included our own John Buckley, Darragh Shanahan and David Silles. Our club suffered a great loss this year in the space of a short time with the passing of three dedicated club members - Margaret Sheehy, Noel O Connell and Larry Dowling. Luckily the baton they carried has been picked up by many other great supporters of our club, without who's help we would not be here today. It is imperative that all our supporters know how much we value their contribution and how grateful we all are for their support. Personally I would like to express my appreciation to all the people who have helped in the running of the club during the year -- particularly our main sponsor Kathleen Foley, John & Francis Griffin for their generous sponsorship and all other people who have contributed to the club financially at different stages during the year. I would also like to extend thanks to my fellow officers for their continued dedication and commitment to the club. We were all new to our roles this year, and it is a fantastic achievement to be here today in the County Final. We have a great Bord na nog structure in place and I would like to thank all the people who work so hard to secure the future of our club. Thanks to the officers, parents and in particular the Coaches who take up these difficult and challenging positions. These people are the unsung heroes. Finally, I want to congratulate our captain Maurice Corridan and Karen McCarthy who were married in St Michaels Church Lixnaw yesterday. I wish them long life good health and happiness always. Enjoy the game Cathaoirleach CILL MHAOILE JOE WALSH Kilmoyley are back in the Co Hurling Final for the first time since 2009 and would you believe just 10 out of that panel of 34 are with us today. So little did we think at the beginning of the year that we would reach the final? We decided to concentrate on the players we had available and try and mould them together into a team that would be competitive in this year s championship. That meant plucking some players out of Intermediate and Minor ranks and after some encouraging performances in the Co Senior league we felt that if we put in the work and trained hard that we would give a good account of ourselves. Three championship victories later and here we are in the final against our old rivals Lixnaw. As Chairman I must say it has been a pleasure working with these lads and they have left no stone unturned as they attempt to bring Neilus Flynn back to Kilmoyley. I want to thank John Meyler, Ollie Diggin and Mike Lawlor for all their work and help during the year. I want to thank my fellow officers who have worked so diligently over the year. Like me, it has been the first year for most of the committee and I must say they have done a wonderful job. Kilmoyley Coiste na nog also deserve great credit and all the coaches and mentors of the underage teams along with the staff of Scoil Naomh Erc where the seed is grown and the love of our ancient game is nurtured and developed. The most difficult task for any club is fundraising and Paddy Harrington and the finance committee have been very busy in this area all year. I wish to thank Our main sponsors Flaherty s Hardware Lerrig, Denis and Margaret Foley of An Tochar Ban bar and Kilmoyley Community Care Lotto for their generous donations and wish to thank them for their support in helping to run a very successful club which caters for all age groups from tiny tots to our Senior team here today. To our loyal members who support us every year in taking out membership, I say a big thank you. Congratulations to all the Kilmoyley players who played with Kerry teams during the year. The Senior Kerry team had a great league series and just came up short in the Christy Ring.. Well done to Ian, Jordan and Robert in the Minor success. Congratulations to Coiste Contae Chiarrai Management and players of the double All-Ireland Football success. Finally, after what has been a wonderful Summer, it would be great for our little Parish if we could finish off the job today and bring home the Neilus Flynn. It would shorten the winter that is for sure. Joe Walsh chairman Kilmoyley Hurling club. 17

BRENDAN S 2-8 Imríodh an cluiche ar an Domhnach, 7ú Deireadh Fómhair i bpáirc Aibhistín de Staic. Lixnaw fully deserved their win and imposed their game on Kilmoyley from the start. They had no answer to the rampant Enda Galvin, who picked up the Man of the Match award for his endeavours. With Eamon Fitzmaurice (current Kerry senior football manager) and Trevor McKenna closing down the centre, they should have been further ahead at the break than the 1-4 to 1-3 they took to the dressing rooms. Joe Murnane scored a 13th minute goal as Kilmoyley led 1-1 to 0-1 but once Lixnaw got going, points from Enda Galvin, Mike Conway and a goal from Killian Fitzmaurice saw them grab the initiative. Two Shane Brick points after the break levelled the contest, but once Mike Conway restored Lixnaw's single point lead the game changed in their favour. Kerry football All-Star Paul Galvin came on as a substitute during the game. Conway fired over three more points as Lixnaw moved 1-10 to 1-5 with just 12 minutes left. Kilmoyley fought back late on but when James McCarthy finished a Tom Murnane free to the net, it was just a two point game. However Lixnaw held on well and gained a 3 point advantage by the final whistle. Bhí Pat Dowling mar chaptaen ar Leac Sná ar an lá. Scorers: LIxNAW: M. Conway 0-6 ( 0-4 frees), K. Fitzmaurice 1-0, J. Kilmoyley were winning their 6th co. senior championship title in a decade, a feat not previously achieved in Kerry hurling. Kilmoyley were well on top throughout this game. Though under dogs, the Ardfert side battled gamely but the overall experience and strength of the Kilmoyley men ensured that they were not going to be beaten on this occasion. They led by 3 points coming up to half time but made it 6 when Micheál Regan goaled with time almost up. In the second half Kilmoyley again dominated. They outscored St. Brendan s by 9 points to 2 during the half and it took 2 late Darren Dineen goals to put a better look on the scoreboard from an Ardfert perspective. Reigning champions Causeway defeated Abbeydorney by 4 11 to 0 5, Lixnaw beat Austin Stacks 5 10 to 0-10, Kenmare had a 3 point away win over Kilmoyley, 0 12 to 0 9 and Dr. Crokes overcame Kilgarvan by 2 13 to Sna chluichí leath cheannais ar an Domhnach, 31ú Lúnasa, bhí an bua ag Dr. Crokes ar Leac Sná 0-20 in aghaidh 1 11 agus bhuaigh Neidín ar An Tóchar, 1 9 in aghaidh 1 8. Tony always had a great interest in sport and had an abiding passion for the game of hurling. His greatest sporting achievement came in 1961 when he was a member of the Kerry team that won the All-Ireland Junior Hurling title for the first time. 25 DR. CROKES Taking a Leap Forward The reader may, understandably, regard the Dr. Crokes GAA club as an exclusively football one. While the footballers have won deserved fame and glory in the Black and Amber colours, there is a vibrant and ambitious hurling section operating in the club too. Over the generations the Dr. Crokes club has produced some of the greatest players ever to grace Kerry Football but a parallel hurling section has been in existence for in excess of 75 years. Fortunes have waxed and waned over that period with, at times, hurling disappearing in the club for short periods only to re-emerge again under the encouragement of officers and members who were anxious that Dr. Crokes would always be a true dual club. The earliest references to hurling in the history of Dr. Crokes date back to the mid 1930 s and in those days the hurling team was mainly made up of immigrants from the more traditional hurling counties who came to work in Killarney. These pioneers found friendship and a homely welcome at Dr. Crokes and while some very welcome blow-ins still gravitate to us, we are now able to boast that some 70% of our hurlers are home-grown. We are very proud of this and it is a ringing endorsement of a juvenile hurling coaching policy put in place in Dr. Crokes by some hardworking and progressive club officials several years ago. The fruits of this work can now be seen and some of our young players have been part of recent Kerry victories in the All-Ireland Minor B Hurling Championship and several graduates from our juvenile ranks are now the backbone of today s team. Today we face our neighbours and old rivals, Kenmare Shamrocks. We wish them luck, but not too much of it...! We are thrilled that Dr. Crokes have taken a huge leap forward and we will participate proudly in the biggest day in Kerry s hurling year. 39 BORD IOMÁNA CHIARRAÍ THUAIDH/ NORTH KERRY HURLING BOARD 2014 Seosamh Breathnach On behalf of the North Kerry Board it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all here to Austin Stacks Park for what promises to be a great days hurling has been one of the great years for sport and many of the great moments will live long in the memory. Today will write another chapter in the Lixnaw/ Kilmoyley rivalry and a South Kerry derby in the intermediate final. Congratulations to the senior and minor football teams on their great All Ireland wins, a great achievement creating great colour and excitement throughout the county. Congratulations also to the Kerry Senior Hurlers on winning Div 2 of the Natioal League with a brillant comeback in Thurles against Carlow when victory looked beyond their reach. The team also reached the Christy Ring final again only to fail narrowly at the final hurdle. Congratulations to the Kerry minor hurlers on winning the All Ireland minor B final making it three in a row for our young hurlers, this is testament to the great work being done by Maurice Leahy and all the coaches who visit the schools in North Kerry to bring all our young players to the highest possible standard. Well done to Ian Brick and his management team on a job well done. The success of the Board would not be achieved but for the committed support and hard work of all our officers and delegates. Thanks to our referees, groundsmen, stewards and supporters. Everybody has a huge part to play. I extend our thanks to Kerry County Board for their great help durind the year, to Bill Maunsell of Abbeydorney Sports Complex for facilitating board meetings, the local media for their continued coverage of our games and everyone involved in the production of todays programme The North Kerry Board wish to thank Lee Strand for their generous sponsorship to the Board over many years which enables the Board to provide a wide range of activities for the youth of the area. Best of luck to all who participate in todays events. The intermediate final gives us a big South Kerry rivalry betwwen Kenmare and Dr Crokes. Kenmare will have an added incentive as they play for the Tony Murphy cup, presented by the Murphy family in honour of one of the great hurlers who graced the hurling fields with Kenmare on many occations. The senior final sees the renewed rivalry of Lixnaw and Kilmoyley with the pendalum falling on the Lixnaw side over the last few meetings. Can the surprise team of the championship Kilmoyley pull off a famous victory or can Lixnaw reverse last years defeat. Games between both teams have always been very close, and lets hope we have a real close games again today. What odds a draw. Best of luck to Lixnaw in County Final No. 2 Hilltop, Bridge Road, Listowel, Co. Kerry Phone: Fax: contact us for FrEE consultation 39

41 The kerry minor hurlers won a historic third All Ireland "B" title in a row on Saturday 6th September defeating Meath 3-18 to 2-15 in the final at Nenagh In total, 46 players from eleven clubs trained during the year, an indication of the number of quality hurlers throughout the county. It was decided that if the panel were willing to give the requested commitment, they deserved the opportunity to play Munster's elite sides and so, were re-instated in the Munster championship. It would also be valuable experience for those young enough to play again next year. Challenge games against Galway, Kilkenny and Offaly gave the players valuable experience, while the S&C training with Damien Ryall brought their fitness to an all new level. But the pace and ferocity of championship hurling proved too great for us as Cork gave us a drubbing 5-26 to 0-9 in Pairc Ui Rinn in the first round. Three weeks later it was Clare away in Ennis, and although the home side won comfortably in the end by 6-25 to 0-11, Kerry showed signs that they could compete at that level as they led after twenty minutes. For the squad to re-group following the leaving cert with a renewed enthusiasm, was very encouraging:- it's not every team that would be willing to do so after two heavy defeats. With six weeks of further training under their belts interrupted with county senior championship games, Kerry made the early morning trip to Wicklow for the quarter final, minus a number of key players on holidays. Played in a first half downpour, the Kerry boys braved the elements and emerged winners 3-9 to 0-7. A week later in the semi final in Nenagh, Roscommon were put to the sword on a scoreline of 2-22 to 0-5. In preparation for the final, Kerry defeated Douglas in the Cork minor league at Fitzgerald stadium with their best display of the year, despite being short a few players involved in the county senior championship. The manner of the display and the contribution by the "fringe" players gave the panel a vital confidence boost. The final was Kerry's 71st session together since training commenced in November. Meath's physicality was an early problem, but once Kerry found their rhythm there was only going to be one winner. Retaining the title was a deserving reward for the huge effort given by the panel, and should give next years panel the encouragement and confidence to build on this success. A special word of credit to a few:- Captain Fionan Mackessy, St. Brendans with a further two years remaining as a minor and carried the responsibility brilliantly on his young shoulders throughout the year. Daniel O'Carroll, Ballyduff became the first Kerry player to win three All Ireland minor "B" medals. To the 18 players who had a 75%+ attendance record (6 players had 90%+ attendance) led by Michael Leane, Ballyheigue with 68 sessions, you showed that commitment reaps rewards. To Aaron Murphy, Dr. Crokes Kerry's only dual minor hurling and football panellist. To Darragh Ryan, Crotta O'Neills who fought his way back from an early season double hip operation. Thanks to all the parents and families for your sacrifices and efforts throughout the year, without it this success could not have been achieved. To selectors Stephen Goggin and Aidan O'Mahony for your dedication and to Ger McCarthy who gave us everything that was asked. To Ger Hegarty for his support and enthusiasm. And to the supporters who travelled for the final making the celebrations even more enjoyable. Where to next for Kerry's minors? The continued co-operation from clubs and club managers means that both teams can reap the benefits without suffering from player burnout. It is also vital that our players are hurling competitively with their Post Primary schools over the winter months, and that early season club games are more competitive. For me, this is the main reason our players find it difficult to step up to the next level. However, in Kerry we have the quality players and coaches with the desire and commitment required to make the breakthrough. Keep encouraging our young hurlers - They believe anything is possible! 45 Cumann na mbunscol Ballyduff take division 1 title in the Allianz Cumann na mbunscol finals. Abbeydorney were denied their second title in a row following a powerful second half performance from the boys from Ballyduff C.N.S. The black and amber boys inspired by a tremendous performance from wing back Caoimhe Spillane pushed their opponents all the way in the opening half. Jamie Herbert, Peter Hinchliffe were outstanding in defence for Abbeydorney and young Oisín Maunsell showed his striking class in this tremendously exciting opening half. For Ballyduff defenders Pádraig Walsh, Stephen and Kieran O'Carroll were in fine form and with influential midfielders Seán Lucid and Dylan Moriarty they led by the slenderest of margins at the break 1-3 to 1-2. In the second half the physically stronger Ballyduff boys dominated for long periods and supplied good ball to inside forwards Jeremiah O'Neill, Thomas O'Neill and Anthony Kavanagh who registered the scores. With Pádraig Walsh and Seán Lucid keeping close tabs on Abbeydorney dangerman Jack Sheehan their inside forwards Gavin Slattery, Darragh O'Connell and Michael O'Sullivan were denied possession in this highly competitive second half. Ballyduff added a further 2-3 to their tally while Abbeydorney had an Oisín Munsell goal bound shot skim the crossbar for a point. Ballyduff victorious to add this Allianz Cumann na mbunscol Div.1 title to the mini sevens crown won earlier in the year. Glenderry take Div. 2 title with late late rally. This was another observing final Glenderry from the Ballyheigue hurling strong hold taking on Holy Family Rathmore appearing in their first Allianz Cumann na mbunscol final. The boys from Sliabh Luachra dominated the first half. They were physically stronger in all areas and won good possession particularly in the air. Inspired by Cathal Ryan, Alan Dineen, Ian O Connor, Dan Murphy, Darragh Rahillyand David Dineen they raced into a 2-1 lead. Tomás Gaynor and Graham Slattery led the Glenderry fight back andwith Coin Waslh giving vital assistance they reduced the gap with 1-1. Rathmore added a point from dangerman Dan Murphy to give his side a lead at the break. Glenderry showed tremendous battling qualities in the opening period of the second half and tried to outwit their opponents with their superior hurling skills but try as they did they only added a point to pull level. Sensing danger the Rathmore boys sprung into action and added three unanswered points to open up what appeared to be the match winning scores. But then came the game changer when a 65 from Tomás Gaynor deceived defenders and goalie to end up in the net for the equalising score as the game entered the final moments. From the puck out Glenderry won possession and when their effort for a score was flicked out for a 65 the Glenderry boys took full advantage and converted to lead for the first time in a trilling game. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat much to the delight of their vociferous supporters. In this Div.3 Allianz Cumann na mbunscol final the Dromclough boys weathered the early pressure from the Gaelscoil to lead at the break 2-2 to 0-1.This certainly wasn t a fair reflection of the play as for long periods the Gaelscoil dominated but didn t convert at a sufficient rate to trouble the Lixnaw/Crotta combination who were far more economical on attack with Timmy Dillion, Denis Quille and in particular Cillian Trant in inspiring form. While Maitiú de Búrca added 1-2 to the Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn tally in the second half it wasn t enough as Dromclough added 3-2 to their score to win on a final scoreline 5-4 to 1-3. For Gaelscoil Éanna Ó Conchúir, Jamie Mac Gearailt, Seán Ó Murchú, Tomás de Búrca, Tomás Ó hainiféin and Maitiú de Búrca caught the eye while Dromclough had top performers in, David Mahoney, Mikey Kelliher, Cillian Trant, Denis Quille and full forward Timmy Dillon. In the two teacher Div.4 Allianz Cumann na mbunscol Final the physically stronger Ballincrossig boys were pushed for long periods by the Killury put hung on to win. The Allianz Cumann na mbunscol finals were all played in sundrenched Austin Stacks Park in early June and all the action was captured on camera by Dan Devane in what was another exhibition of fantastic hurling. 47 My memories of the year just gone as Kerry hurling manager DJ Leahy, Tom O Connell, Brian Horgan and myself met with the players in mid-december in Causeway and laid down our expectation for the year ahead. Although a number of the players had been doing great work over with Damien Ryall over the winter on Strength and Conditioning, our first field session was on a Sunday morning in early Janurary. After a slow start we gained momentum on the run into the National league. Our aim in this competition was to try have a look at as many players as possible and also have a game plan in place that would best suit our team. We started well away to Derry and followed that up with wins against Kildare, Westmeath, Carlow and London. This qualified us for a final showdown with Carlow who now had there Mount Leinster players available to them after their great run in the All Ireland Club Championship. In a fantastic game of hurling in semple stadium we came out the right side of the result and were crowned national league champions 2A. This was a great achievement and what will live long in my memory was the show of emotion following the final whistle from players, mentors, back room staff and the fantasic supportors who made the long journey there. We had a six day turn around to play Offaly in a playoff match again in semple stadium. A lot has already been discussed as to whether this playoff should or should not be there, but after a great start leading by 7 points a shock looked on the cards. A fresher Offaly team pulled away in the final ten minutes and maintained their div 1 status for Our main aim for 2014 was to try win the Christy Ring Cup. We started very well with a big win against Derry in Austin Stack park and then travelled to Newbridge to play Kildare, after a very tough game we came away with a victory and a place in the semi-final away to Mayo. We won this game with an excellent first half and a poor second half performance. We now qualified to play Kildare in the final for our 3rd time this year. They were a team who after a poor league campaign were gaining momentum and gave their best performance of the year to beat us 4-18 to This was hugely disappointing to us as we didn't perform to our ability on the day. Hopefully this should be enough motivation for 2015, as this the stepping stone needed for Kerry hurling to make the step towards the Liam McCarthy Cup Competition. I have really enjoyed watching the club championship over the past few months and have been amazed with the enthusiasm and support at all of the games. Hopefully this will continue with the county team for the forthcoming league and Christy Ring campaigns. Finally I would like to wish Kemare Shamrocks and Dr. Crokes all the best in the intermediate final and to Kilmoyley an Lixnaw in the senior final. Lastly but not least congrats to both the Kerry Minor and Senior teams on been crowned All Ireland Football Champions! Photo: Kerry s Eye 47

49 LIXNAW PAST PLAYER willie O Connell LONGEVITY. That is the word I would use when describing the service that Willie O Connell of Irrabeg, gave to his beloved Lixnaw in GAA matters. From early manhood, to the present day, he gave his own free time to the promotion of our national games of hurling and football. He played hurling with Lixnaw and football with the sister club, Finuge, in his younger days. When the majority of his playing friends retired from the activities on the playing fields, that was the end of their involvement in the GAA. Not so for Willie. He gave of his services unselfishly to the administration of the hurling club. If the playing field had to be cared for, he was there. When the field was being developed to its present day splendid conditions, he was there. When the juvenile and minor hurlers were training, he was present. When they were competing in the different grades of North Kerry hurling competitions, he was there, encouraging them to greater efforts. Like most mentors, he could be critical when some young fella didn't perform as Willie would have liked him to. But it would be all forgotten when the game was over, especially if things went to his satisfaction. Away from the playing field in his spare time, he would repair the broken hurleys (which were many) and a dab hand he was at restoring what many would consider a lost cause. So much for his service off the field. ON the field of play he was a very skilled hurler. His ball control was exceptional. His first touch was exceptional. His first touch was brilliant, and his delivery from what seemed a mere touch would travel to the other end of the field. He gave many exceptional performances on the hurling field, but the one that sticks out was his display against Ballyduff in a league semifinal. Playing around centre field and the half-forwards he was really on fire. So much so that the Ballyduff mentors switched their most outstanding player on to him. But it didn't make any difference, as Willie continued to dominate the game. The sad side of this is that Lixnaw was on the losing end despite Willie's wonderful performance. Willie was on the victorious Lixnaw senior team in 1953 (North Kerry League) and again in 1954, winning both the County Championship and N.K.L. for Lixnaw. He got his third N.K.L. medal in He played many years for Finuge footballers as a corner back, winning the N.K.L. with them in 1960, but lost the medal on an objection after the final in Listowel. However, he finally got his football medal in 1961, when Finuge again defeated Listowel in the final. No objections this time! We hope that Willie continues for many more years as a great supporter of Lixnaw GAA. 49

51 tom COLLInS In 1951 at the age of sixteen years Tom Collins was playing football with the St. Brendan s District Board Minor football team in the Kerry County Championship. This continued in 1952 and in 1953 in which year St Brendan s won the Kerry County Minor Football Championship. Tom was among seven young footballers from Kilmoyley that year who formed the back bone of the Kilmoyley team who won the 1953 Kerry County Minor hurling championship. The achievement of these seven young men has not been repeated since which is all of sixty one years ago. As well as winning county championship medals in both codes Tom captained the Kilmoyley minor team that captured the Monsignor Collins trophy for the St Brendan s Board Minor Football League. He was also a member of the Kilmoyley team that won the North Kerry Minor Hurling League in Tom s long list of achievements on the sporting fields was only beginning. In 1954 at the age of 19 he won an All-Ireland Junior Football medal with Kerry as did Seán Lovett and Diarmuid Lawlor. At this stage of his career Tom s fitness, passion, skill and commitment was proving to be a great challenge for any opposition. Bearing this fact out I quote from The Kerryman report on Kilmoyley s defeat of Ballyduff in the quarter final of the County Hurling Championship in Star of the Kilmoyley win was Tom Collins that wonderful utility man who operated at centreback. His dash and speed enabled him to clear seemingly impossible balls while he never lost his head although he was the victim of some very heavy charges. To wear the green and gold jersey is an ambition cherished by most children born in The Kingdom of Kerry. To appear not once but in three Munster Finals on the same day was an unique honour that fell to Tom Collins in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney, on Sunday 29th July It is surely a record that will never be beaten. Kerry Junior Hurlers defeated Waterford in the furst game. Kerry Junior Footballers defeated Waterford also in the second game. Tom Collins played the full hour in both these games. The third game was the Munster Senior Football final betweeen Cork and Kerry. Kerry were not having the best of the exchanges with Cork and midway through the 2nd half as the Kerry selectors sprang Tom Collins from the substitutes bench a mighty roar was heard from the big contingent of Kerry supporters in Killarney that day as they knew that history was about to be made, but despite Tom s and the other Kerry forwards efforts, the Cork halfback line could not be breached and Kerry lost the senior final. In 1957 and 1958 St Brendan s District Board football team reached the county Senior Football Championship final-not an easy achievement but they lost on both occasions. 1n 1957 to Kerins O Rahilly s and in 1958 to South Kerry-Tom Collins s only chance of a Kerry Senior Football Champiomnship Medal. Four years later he was part of Kilmoyley s three Senior Hurling Championship titles in a row. 1962/1963/1964. A fitting end to a brilliant career. Tom Collins was a utter gentleman and a true sportsman. It was a pleasure to know him and an honour to stand beside him on a hurling or football pitch. Ní bheidh a leithéid aris ann. 53 COUNTY HURLING FÉILE Feile 2014 team captains Dean O Brien Abbeydorney, referee John Ross & Darragh O Donoghue Crotta Abbeydorney Under 14 team - Féile Champions 2014 It was a solemn Abbeydorney U14 panel that followed the piper as he passed a packed Healy Park Stand in Abbeydorney last May bank holiday Monday. The occasion was the County Hurling Féile and the young hurlers well knew that Timmy Weir last captained an Abbeydorney side to Féile victory in It was their neighbours and great rivals Crotta O'Neills that stood between them and long anticipated glory. The team were equal to the task, however, and did not let the weight of history tell in their performance as they thrilled the crowd with a fine display to lift the cup and put four decades of waiting behind them. The Abbeydorney panel set out with their mentors on the long journey to Belfast on a sunny morning in late June to contest National Féile na ngael finals. They were welcomed warmly by their host club Naomh Eoin whose historic grounds are situated just off the Falls Road. The first game for Abbeydorney who were competing in Division 2 of the National Finals was against their host club and they duly won by 4 points. Their second group game was against Down champions Balygalget who proved worthy opponents, however Abbeydorney won 1-2 to 0-4 with the help of a late goal. The final group game was against Croagh Kilfinny of Limerick who won on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-5. The Kerry champions had done enough, however, to progress to the quarter final in the cup competition. In the Quarter Final Abbeydorney played their best game yet against Antrim side Oisin Glenarriff winning this match by 1-2 to 0-3. The team had succeeded in making it to the final day of the competition and a semi final against Kildare champions Naas. Naas, with a squad of players all of whom were on the age for under 14 competition and may well have enjoyed success in Division 1, proved too strong and went on to win the semi final and later the cup. The young Abbeydorney players showcased the best of Kerry hurling on the National stage and came home to a proud reception in the North Kerry village. Hopefully the success is an indicator of a bright future for Abbeydorney hurling and the panel will continue to enjoy success at all levels. Go n-eírí go geal leo! 55 CAMOGIE Mol An Óige agus Tiocfaidh Sí Camogie still going strong in the county 2014 for the Kerry Camogie was a very successful one for our County Teams doing well. To start off with our Kerry Senior team who had a very good year but were unlucky as well. We entered the Irish Daily Star National League for the first time it was a successful entry. We started off with a good win at home in Caherslee against Meath. We had wins over Limerick, Dublin and Tyrone. We won all our games so we qualified for the Semi Final playing Dublin and came out winners by 3 points. Next up was the Final against Limerick. That took a second day out as we drew at home and a week later we played them in Newcastle West but unfortunately we lost that final replay. Coming up to that Final we got Weeshie Fogarty of Terrace Talk to do a programme helping us create interest and support within the county. Next up was the Liberty Insurance Junior A Championship which began in June with an away game to Dublin. Winning that give us great motivation and belief. We lost to Carlow at home but still managed to qualify for Semi Final against Limerick but unfortunatley were beaten again, by Limerick who went on to win that Junior A Championship. That was it for the Kerry Seniors until 2015 Kerry Minors were also out early in the year.they got off to a bad start with losses against Meath and Carlow and Armagh away. These losses finished their year.they will look to forget about 2014 and have an even better Kerry U16s The Kerry U16s were down to play their first game on Sunday 22nd June but Carlow were unable to field. The next game was a week later and came out strong winners over Wicklow. They then were beaten by a stronger Laois panel. Then came a must win game against Carlow at home but sadly that was not to be. The Kerry girls showed tremendous fighting qualities in that game, they really did fightback and were just unlucky in the final stages of that game. kerry u14s The Kerry girls took part in the All Ireland blitz on the 13th of September. They played 4 games. In the first game they played Meath. In a tight game Kerry were unable to turn their dominance of possession into scores and lost 2.3 to no score. Next up Kerry played Wicklow and in an extremely tight game Kerry lost by the naorrowest of margins 1.1 to 1.2. In Kerry s final game against Tyrone they played and won well 2.3 to 0.1. With 2 wins and 2 losses Kerry failed to progress to the Semi Finals but acquitted themselves well and with honour. A number of the girls showing the potential to go on in future years and represent Kerry at Senior level. Here s hoping to a successful 2015 in Kerry Camogie. We hope to bring plenty of Silverware back to the county. We wish all Clubs, but especially my own club Kilmoyley the best of Luck in today s County Final. yours in Sport Triona Brassil P.R. Kerry GAA is one of the Institutes strategic partners in the development of this multi million state-of-the-art facility. PHASE 2/ Full Size Floodlit Sand Based Pitches 1 Full Size All Weather Synthetic Pitch Additional Dressing Rooms Hurling Wall Jogging Track Players Catering Facility The Institute hopes to commence construction works on this project in the academic year 15/16. Sports Academy at IT Tralee This project involves a strategic alliance between Kerry CLG and IT Tralee. This partnership approach will ensure the highest standards in Sports Development and Education and further ensure that economies of scale are maximised. The works consist of the Development of a Sports Academy representing a Global Best Practice model of social inclusion through Sport, physical activity and inclusive physical education. There will be a Dedicated GAA Suite comprising of a reception area, dressing rooms, WC facilities, shower facilities, meeting rooms, a players lounge and offices. A dedicated GAA all weather flood Lit pitch will also be constructed. These facilities will be wholly owned by Kerry CLG. Other Features which will be available to Kerry CLG on an agreed shared basis include an international sized indoor sports arena, High performance Gym, teaching gym, hydrotherapy suite, fully equipped teaching spaces, suite of auditoria, an existing outdoor synthetic pitch and an existing full size sand based pitch. Financing the Project The important point to emphasize is that no club in the County will be levied for any of this development. The Project will be completed using our own finances, which includes Grants that have been allocated from the Munster GAA and Croke Park, the very generous contribution from our Main Sponsors Kerry Group and monies raised through Cairde Chiarraí & the International Fundraising committee. Kerry GAA have also secured a Provisional Sports Capital Grant for the Currans Development. 61
