3 WATER TEMPERATURES, SALINITIES, AND FISHES COLLECTED DURING TRAWL SURVEYS OF CHESAPEi.KE BAY -\ND YORK AND PAMUNKEY RIVERS 9-99 To obtain information on the distribution and reative abundance of fishes in an estuary, a series of traw surveys was made between Apri 9 and November 99. Coections were made a t stations ocated at intervas of approimatey mies, from sa t water near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay to fresh water at Lester Manor on the Pamunkey River. Beginning at the mouth of the Bay, st.tions (shown on front cover) were numbered seriay from to. Stations to have been termed Bay stations; -8, ower York River; 9-, upper York River; and -, Pamunkey River. Water depths and station ocations are presented in Tabe. Cruises were generay made during the second or third week of each month. Thirty-four cruises were competed (Tabe ). On three of the cruises some stations were not occupied. From Apri 9 to.tay 97 cruises were made with the R/V Virginia Lee. In January 97 stations to were not occupied because of ice in the river. In August 97 surveys were greaty faciitated when the R/V Pathfinder was put into fu operation. From Apri 9 to October 97 surface and bottom water temperatures were obtained with a reversing thermometer or directy from water taken by Kemerer samper. was used (Tabes and ). After this period a thermistor Sainities from surface and bottom (Tabes and ) were, uness otherwise specified, determined by titration with siver nitrate and corrected from <nudsen's (90) tabes.

4 - - Trawing was done with a 0-foot, semi-baoon shrimp traw having -inch (stretch measure) mesh in the wings and body and /-inch mesh in the cod end. A tows were made at approimatey knots in the same direction as tida currents. Trawing was done for minutes at Bay and York River stations. In the Pamunkey River, however, numerous snags and quantities of organic debris were present. In this area haus were made for 7 / minutes and the counts of fishes in each hau were doubed. Fishes were identified and counted and subsampes were measured. For tabuation, sampes from stations -, -8, 9-, and - have been pooed. Over 00,000 fishes beonging to 9 different species have been captured. Tabe 7 ists the fishes captured with the season and area in which they were taken. Tabe 8 ists the numbers of individuas of the different fishes trawed on each cruise. The traw is an effective samping device for demersa species ony. Some forms are confined to shaow water or occur principay at mid-depths and may be epected rarey, if at a, from traw haus. Most estuarine species, however, are primariy bottom-dweing forms. Data from these surveys have contributed substantiay to pubications on weakfish (Massmann et a., 98), croaker (Massmann and Pacheco, 90), and spot (Pacheco, in press) and have formed the basis for predictions of future abundance for croaker, weakfish, spot and striped bass. It is anticipated that more detaied anayses of the dist ibutions and size compositions of the fishes wi be presented ater.

5 - - Many individuas have contributed substantiay to these surveys, especiay J. W. Whitcomb, C. E. Richards, A. L. Pacheco, F. J. Wojcik, E. B. Joseph, J. J. Norcross, s. Wison, and G. Cerruner.
