1 Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science ENGR Mechanisms & Electric Circuits Prof. Dennis Fifield Robot Platform Wallee II Final Competition Rules, Regulations and Scoring 1. Each team must register for the competition using the on-line registration form before Friday, November 7th, 14. A complete registration form must include the full name and student ID of each team member, the name of the Team Captain, and the team name (be creative but please keep it politically correct). 2. Note that during the competition, all communications with the judges and other officials must be through the designated Team Captain. 3. Two teams compete on the course at the same time; a red team and a green team (Figure 1). The two teams must initially position their robots entirely within the starting box of their own color. All teams have one minute to setup their robot in the starting area and are ask to leave the course as soon as they finish competing. Once the judge starts the match, the team cannot touch the robot or the match ends for that team. Otherwise, the robots have exactly 2 minutes to autonomously navigate the course and place ping-pong balls into containers. 4. Each team has the option of using golf balls instead of ping-pong balls, though the team must supply their own golf balls and have a set of green and red for competition. 5. Each team will score points for every ping-pong ball they place in a container. The robot can hold up to a maximum of eight ping-pong balls. A maximum of two balls that can be placed in each container and the robot cannot place two consecutive ping-pong balls in one container. Any balls after the initial two will be immediately removed from the container and will not be counted. 6. Only ping-pong balls that stay in the container will be score at the end of the match, any ping-pong balls that bounce out will not be scored. ENGR 1040 Mechanisms & Electric Circuits Page 1 of 7
2 7. The teams are free to select the exact position and orientation of the robot within their respective starting boxes providing the robot is entirely within the starting box with no overhang. 8. Teams must design and build the device for transporting the ping-pong balls. The ping-pong balls may be pushed, dragged, launched or carried on the robot. The component cost of the entire device (excluding any components provided in the robot kit) must be less than $10. The design of the mechanism as well as the cost breakdown must be included in the final design report. Note that permanent alterations to the robot platform are not permitted. 9. Each team can obtain a square foot sheet of aluminum from the machine shop to aid in building the transporting device. The sheet does not necessary have to be square, the dimensions is up to the group. The cost of this material is covered in the course fee, but for purposes of the report the cost of the aluminum is a $100 for a 4 x 8 sheet. 10. The containers are standard plastic approximately 8 x 6 x Each team is allowed a third IR sensor and a third stepper motor, though the stepper motors have a limited supply. Teams must build their transporting device before they receive the stepper motor to prevent hoarding. 12. Ping-pong balls placed in containers located on the red side of the course are worth the amount shown in figure 3 to the red team. Similarly the ping-pong balls placed in containers located on the green side of the course are worth the amount to the green team. 13. Ping-pong balls placed in containers located on the opposing team s territory are considered high value and are worth triple the usual number of points. 14. The robots are permitted to encroach on the opposing team s territory in an effort to place high-value ping-pong balls. However, if the encroaching robot is tagged by the home team robot, both robots are immediately removed from the playing surface and 100 points are awarded to the home team s score. 15. Once a robot has been tagged, the both team has the option with the remaining time to immediately restart in their starting boxes. It could be to the team s advantage to run an alternate code immediately at this point. (i.e. without uploading from a laptop) 16. Tagging an encroaching robot refers to coming into physical contact with any part of the robot including loose wires and all ancillary devices that have been added to the basic robot platform. A robot can be tagged if any part of the robot encroaches or overhangs onto the opposing team s territory. ENGR 1040 Mechanisms & Electric Circuits Page 2 of 7
3 17. A team is permitted to add appendages (i.e., whiskers ) to facilitate tagging the opposing robot providing the appendages respect the size limitation in section 3 above. Note that adding appendages cuts both ways; an encroaching robot is considered tagged if the opposing robot touches one of its appendages. The appendages cannot be dropped from the robot or be dragged behind the robot. 18. The competition will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 14 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Each team will compete in 3 preliminary matches, the team s final score will be the total sum attained in all preliminary matches. Historically, the top teams will likely be the ones that have the most consistent matches, opposed to a single high scoring match. 19. The class champion will receive 100% on the performance portion of the final project. The remaining teams will receive a performance grade based on their score in the preliminary.. The teams will not be given the option to select which course they will compete on. Therefore the robots must be able to accept dimension and fiction tolerances. The same courses will not be used for both practice and competition, so students must take care in not damaging the practicing courses (i.e. broken walls, walking on with shoes, etc.) since this will cause the practice courses to be different from the competition courses. The practice courses will not be replaced if damaged. 21. Any unforeseen amendments or interpretations of the rules will be posted on the course web page. ENGR 1040 Mechanisms & Electric Circuits Page 3 of 7
4 Grading The project accounts 16% of the final grade; 6% for performance and 10% for the final design report. Final Report The final report will be 10 pages double spaced (not including cover page, table of contents, etc). This report is a technical document and should be clear and concise, written based on facts and observations and not the personal thoughts and feelings of the writer. As a minimum, the final report must contain the following elements: 1. Statement of the strategy employed to win the competition. 2. Detailed description of the algorithms developed for the final competition and a list of function headers should be included in the appendix (not the main body of the report). NOTE: the code should NOT be included in the report but submitted via Design details of the device for placing the ping-pong balls as well as the associated cost breakdown. Design details for all other ancillary devices should be included. 4. A detailed description of how the project was managed including the responsibilities of each team member. 5. Discussion and recommendations on the overall success of your team. 6. Result, discussion and recommendation on the outcome of the competition 7. References (if any) Submitting The final report is due on Friday, December 5, 14, before 3pm in room EN3038. The report will past in with the robot kit and will not be accepted without a complete and disassembled robot. ENGR 1040 Mechanisms & Electric Circuits Page 4 of 7
