2 Theme A driverless car is an autonomous vehicle that can drive itself from one point to another without any external assistance. Navigation is accomplished by a system of markers retrofitted on existing roads which provide inputs to the sensors that drive the corresponding actuators on the vehicles. A line following vehicle is in a way an entry level autonomous vehicle that can navigate any course while following a on a contrasting background. Problem Statement Design and fabricate an autonomous vehicle capable of navigating efficiently through guided white lines on a Black floor.. The vehicle must be able to effectively follow the guiding path. The racers will be tested on speed and accuracy of path following. Arena The arena shall consist of white lines on a Jet Black Floor. For ease of navigation, the lines shall be 3cm thick will be free from breakages. The arena size shall be 3m x 1.5m. The entire arena shall be conveniently situated in a uniformly-lit room to minimize ambient light. The teams are however advised to cover their sensors to avoid errors due to ambient light. The arena would consist of smooth curves, U- turns and sharp corners (not more than 900 turns). The white line to be followed would also be surrounded by a wall at few strategic places. A sample arena has been shown below. The real arena would be disclosed at the time of the competition. However, all participating teams would be given enough time prior to the competition to make specific changes in their programs to suit the requirements of the given track 2

3 SCORING The track comprises of multiple checkpoints. In the preliminary stages, teams would be shortlisted on basis of their Average speeds (counting all time penalties). The knockout stages would be 1 on 1 matches where the teams race for glory. PROGRAMMERS BEWARE!! Game Rules 1. Once the robot is put on the start line, no further interference by the operator is allowed. 2. The average speed of the robot (=distance covered/time taken) would be the criteria for judging in the initial stages. Teams would then move on to the knockout stage on this basis. 3. Knockout stages would be one on one competitions and the team reaching the finish line first is declared the winner. However, if none of the robots is unable to complete the track, then average speed would be the criteria for declaring the winner. 3

4 4. The white line to be followed would be surrounded by vertical walls 10 cm high and 1 cm thick at few strategic places. A time penalty of 15 seconds would be imposed each time the bot touches the wall. 5. A maximum of 3 minutes will be allowed per team for completing the track. 6. A robot is deemed to have crossed the line when the forward most wheel, track, or leg of the robot contacts or crosses over the finish line. 7. If the team members wish to touch the robot after the robot starts from the start line, they can take a timeout. A 20 second penalty will be levied in case of a timeout. However strategies based on timeouts may lead to disqualification. 8. A team can take any number of timeouts. However they will have to restart their robot from the previous checkpoint. 9. There will a technical inspection before every match. The bots have to freerun on an arbitrary track to ensure that it is purely based on LINE FOLLOWING ALGORITHMS. Conditions & Points to Watch Out 1. The robot must be able to fit inside a box with dimensions of 30 cm X 30 cm X 20 cm and weigh less than 3 kg. 2. The robot should follow the line using line following algorithms only. 3. The external power supply is not included in the size constraint. However in case of onboard power supply, the machine along with the power supply should fit in the above mentioned dimension box and must together weigh as mentioned above. 4. The machine must use only mechanical power or mechanical power converted from a source of electrical energy. 5. During the game the machine is allowed to expand its parts provided it does not damage the arena in any way. 6. The organizers will provide a standard 230V/50 Hz AC power supply. Any eliminator, adaptor, etc required will have to be arranged by participants themselves. Please do not make any special demands. 7. The machine must be fully autonomous. i.e., no manual control is to be present. 4

5 8. In case of external power supply, the wire must be slack at all point of time during the game. Please ensure a fairly long wire considering the arena dimensions. 9. The machine should not leave spare parts in the arena at any stage. This can lead to a time penalty or may even lead to disqualification. 10. The machines you build will be first checked for size and safety. The machine should not cause electric power breakdowns. 11. Judges have the right to disqualify any machine whose working mechanism or game strategy is considered hazardous in any way. 12. In case any kind of dispute arises the judges decision will be considered final and binding to all and no argument will be entertained. 13. If none of the robots are able to complete the track, then the average speed (=distance covered/ total time taken) will be criteria for elimination and proceeding to the next round. Constructor s Rules 1. All the students enrolled in high school, undergraduate, postgraduate (excluding PhD.) program at any recognized institute (identity card will be checked) are eligible to participate. 2. A team can consist of a maximum of 4 members. 3. Each team must declare a name for their machine at the time of competition. Disqualification 1. During the match, the team members are not allowed to touch the machine or the arena. Failure to do so will lead to disqualification. 2. Any kind of damage to the arena will attract disqualification. 3. The teams will be asked to get ready 5 minutes before the start of the match. If a team is not ready within the stipulated time, the other team will be declared as the winner. 5

6 4. Judges have the right to disqualify any team if they feel the team is not playing with fair interests. General information 1.
