1 Background: When we were studying structures, we read the book Curious George Plays Mini Golf, adapted by Marcy Goldberg Sacks. In the book George was surprised that the lowest score in a golf game is better than the highest score. Challenge: Design and build a maze or track that will direct a ball to travel from the tee to the hole on George s imaginary golf course in as few hits as possible. Test your miniature golf hole three times and add up your score. Par will be the average of the three trials. Criteria: Your structure must:! fit on the provided cardboard base.! have a ramp.! use one cylinder chip can or Pitsco tube.! include a starting tee.! have a hole (cup) to catch the golf ball.! be designed to keep the ball on the course. Materials: You may choose from the following materials. card stock craft sticks (limit 6) glue cylinder chip can or Pitsco tube tape (limit 12 inches) paper fasteners (limit 4) index cards pipe cleaners newspaper construction paper straws (limit 4) bottle caps cardboard from flattened food boxes Tools: markers 12 inch ruler scissors pushpin paper drill low temperature glue gun (adult use only) safety glasses hole punch Crop-A-Dile! plastic spoon use for golf club Ping-Pong! ball 17

2 Guided Portfolio 1. What is the PROBLEM? Restate it in your own words. 2. BRAINSTORM! Look through the available materials. Then sketch or list at least four different design ideas in the boxes below. 18

3 3. CREATE your favorite design! Keep notes below about the problems you had and how you solved them. What problems did you have? How did you solve the problems? 4. TEST your solution. Does the structure fit on the cardboard base? Does your structure include a tee to use to start the game? Describe the materials you used. Does your structure contain one chip can or Pitsco tube? Explain how you used your tube. Do you have a hole at the end of the golf course? Describe how you decided what size to make the hole. Is the structure designed to keep the golf ball from rolling off the course? Explain how the design feature works. List the score for each of your test runs or trials.
