3 Many new classes on the NPtHA Show Schedule this year! Ranch Riding A. The purpose of Ranch Riding should reflect the versatility, attitude and movement of a working horse. The performance of the Pinto should simulate an equine riding outside the confines of an arena and that of a working ranch horse. This class should show the ability of the Pinto to work at a forward, working speed while under control by the rider. Light contact should be rewarded and the Pinto shall not be shown on a full drape of reins. The overall manners and responsiveness of the Pinto while performing the maneuver requirements, and the Pinto s quality of movement are the primary considerations. B. Offered as an all age class for open, amateur and youth, and for Pintos three years of age or older. C. Class requirements: 1. Each horse will work individually; performing both required and optional maneuvers, and scored on the basis of 0 to 100, with 70 denoting an average performance. Each maneuver will receive a score that should be added or subtracted from 70 and is subject to a penalty that should be subtracted. Each maneuver will be scored on the following basis, ranging from plus 1 1/2 to minus 1 1/2.: -1 1/2 extremely poor, -1 very poor, - 1/2 poor, 0 correct, +1/2 good, + 1 very good, + 1 1/2 excellent. Maneuver scores are to be determined and assessed independently of penalty points. 2. The required maneuvers will include the walk, trot, and lope both directions: and the extended trot and extended lope at least one (1) direction; as well as stops, and reverse. a. Walk The walk is a natural, flat footed, four-beat gait. The gait is rhythmic and ground covering. As in all gaits, the horse should display a level, or slightly above level topline with a bright, attentive expression. b. Trot The trot is a natural two-beat gait demonstrating more forward motion than the western jog. c. Extended Trot The extended trot is an obvious lengthening of the stride with a definite increase in pace. The horse should be moving in a manner as if it were covering a large area on a ranch with an above level topline. d. Lope The lope is a threebeat gait. The lope should be relaxed and smooth with a natural, forward moving stride. e. Extended Lope The extended lope is not a run or a race but should be an obvious lengthening of the stride, demonstrating a forward, working speed. The horse should display an above level topline with a bright, attentive expression. f. Stop - From both the lope and the trot, the equine should be in the correct stopping position (both hocks engaged and stopping on the hindquarters.) All four feet stop moving before the next maneuver is attempted. g. Reverse - The equine turns briskly and flat with front feet on the ground and holding an inside rear piot spot. The reverse may be performed in either direction. 3. Three (3) optional maneuvers may include a side pass, turns of 360 or more, change of lead (simple or flying), walk, trot, or lope over a pole(s); or some reasonable combination of maneuvers that would be reasonable for a ranch horse to perform. 4. The maneuvers may be arranged in various combinations with final approval by the judge. 5. No time limit. 6. One of the suggested patterns may be used, however a judge may utilize a different pattern as long as all required maneuvers and the three (3) (or more) optional maneuvers are included. 7. The use of natural logs is encouraged. 8. Posting at the extended trot is acceptable. 9. Touching or holding the saddle horn is acceptable. D. Ranch Riding Apparel and Equipment 1. No hoof polish. 2. No braided or banded manes or tail extensions. 3. Trimming inside ears is discouraged. 4. Trimming bridle path is allowed, also trimming of fetlocks or excessive (long) facial hair. 5. Equipment with silver should not count over a good working outfit. Silver on bridles and saddles is discouraged. E. Ranch Riding Penalties. A contestant shall be penalized each time the following occur: 1. One (1) point penalty a. Too slow/per gait b. Over-Bridled c. Out of Frame d. Break of gait at walk or trot for 2 strides or less e. Split log at lope 2. Three (3) point penalties a. Break of gait at walk or jog for more than two (2) strides b. Break of gait at lope c. Wrong lead or out of lead d. Draped reins e. Out of lead or cross-cantering more than two strides when changing leads. f. Trotting more than three strides when making a simple lead change. g. Severe disturbance of an obstacle. 3. Five (5) point penalties a. Blatant disobedience (kick, bite, buck, rear, etc.) b. Each refusal 4. Placed below horses performing all maneuvers a. Eliminates maneuver b. Incomplete maneuver 5. Zero (0) score a. Illegal equipment including hoof black, braided or banded manes, or tail extensions b. Willful abuse c. Major disobedience or schooling d. Using two hands on the reins 6. No specific penalties will be incurred for nicks/hits on logs, but deduction may be made in maneuver score. 7. No specific penalties will be incurred for over/under spins, but deduction may be made in maneuver score. Please see Rulebook for Patterns. 3
4 HISTORY OF HUNTER ATTIRE The Equine Chronicle by Megan Arszman from the article Traditional vs. Trendy Hunt Seat Fashion in 2018 While watching the top Hunter under Saddle horse and riders circling the arena, can you picture these elegantly coiffed teams covering the rough terrain of the field, following a pack of Foxhounds? While it might seem like an odd image, that s where the history of Hunter under Saddle, in terms of the horse s movement and the rider s attire, originated. According to AQHA Professional Horsewoman GiGi Bailey, the history of Hunt Seat comes from the sport of foxhunting. Everything about Hunter under Saddle clothing attributes to foxhunting for a reason, Bailey says. Hunt Coats Foxhunting typically takes place during the colder months of the year. At the start of the sport, there weren t coats made of rayon or poly-blends. Jackets were made from wool, which kept the riders warm. The coats were mostly dyed in darker colors so riders didn t stand out in the field. It was part of being a little covert as covert you can be while riding horses across a field with a bunch of Foxhounds chasing you! she explains. Shirts Shirts for Foxhunting were long sleeved and had a traditional stock tie. Initially, the stock tie was white cotton, measuring four inches wide and about two feet long. The rider would wrap the tie around his/her neck a couple of times and then secure it with a large safety pin. This was to be used as a bandage if your horse cut his leg while on the hunt. You didn t ride over courses. You rode over people s land, jumped over stone fences, and went through sticks and burrs, Bailey says. Boots and Breeches Breeches were made of a thicker fabric than today s version, but were tight fitting so as not to get caught on tree branches and brush. Tall leather boots protected a rider s legs from the environment. Accessories Gloves were worn to keep hands warm in the chilly winter air. Jewelry was kept to a minimum. The saddle was minimally built so it wasn t too heavy, but allowed the rider a sense of security without bulk. The reason why Hunt bridles have a noseband is so riders could tie up their horse when out in the field, if needed. Therefore, all of our tack and attire began for function, Bailey explains. You can read the full article here: Don t forget Daylight Savings Time is March 11 th! This means more daylight for riding time! 4
