Wingshots John Haviland Short Sixteen In the back of the local sporting goods store, at the end of the used gun rack stood a Winchester Model 12 pump-action shotgun. I took the gun off the shelf and was surprised to see it was a 16 gauge. Its action was as tight as the day it left the factory and that should have told me something. I checked the serial number, the clerk called from behind the counter, and the gun was made in Pretty good shape after 80 years. I ve always been a fan of the Model 12 and a sucker for any 16 gauge. I wrote out a check for the gun right there. I checked Paul Wahl s Gun Trader s Guide, and as nearly as I could tell from the illustrations, the gun was a plain barrel skeet model. But that couldn t be, because those guns were made from 1937 to Most likely the gun was a standard Model 12, and someone had replaced its grooved slide handle with a full forearm, because full forearms for the gun weren t made until 1930 or so. The following Saturday morning, I took the gun and a few boxes of shells out to shoot some handthrown clay pigeons. The gun shot rather well with Winchester Upland loads, except two of the empty shells failed to eject. None of the empty hulls would eject from a box of Federal Game loads. The following Monday I took the 16 to gunsmith Doug Wells, sure he was going to say the ejector was My Winchester Model 12 has the old inch chamber. American shells used to be made to fit these short chambers until the 1960s, as shown by the green Remington Express and brown Peters Victor inch, 16-gauge shells. worn and it would require lots of money to fix. Wells studied the gun as he slowly ran an empty shell in and out of the chamber. Your ejector is fine, he said. What you have here is the old inch chamber. Some big money would be required for the gun to cycle standard 16

2 3 4-inch shells. The chamber and ejection port would have to be lengthened, the ejector adjusted and the breech bolt modified. No doubt the reason the gun s so tight is nobody could find any short shells to shoot in it, he said. Bill Hanus sells a line of small gauge double guns and is considered the 16-gauge guru. Hanus said up until 1930 shell lengths varied in the same gauge and from gauge to gauge, and a 20-, 16- or 12-gauge shell might measure 2 1 2, 2 5 8, or inches. SAAMI (Small Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) standardized the inch chamber for the 16 gauge in 1929 or 1930, Hanus said, but you have to understand that was in the depths of the Great Depression, and no factory was going to throw away barrels they already had with the short chambers. I d say any American 16-gauge gun made before the mid-1930s could have a short inch chamber. In addition, American GIs returning home after World War II packed home many 16-gauge shotguns liberated in Europe. I d say all of those guns had or inch chambers, Hanus said. According to Tom Henshaw, a retired engineer for Winchester, the 1963 Winchester-Western ammunition catalog listed inch, 16- gauge ammunition. But a footnote stated the load would only be furnished until the current stocks were depleted. Remington also made short shells for the 16 until the early 1960s. Kent Cartridge America ( ; kentgamebore.com) sells inch 16s made by its subsidiary Gamebore of England. These shells really measure inches, but they work fine in and inch chambers, said Kent s Bob Sheridan. For those who would rather load their own short shells, all that s required are scissors and a minor adjustment to the reloading press. For an even cut, I pinched flat the mouths of Federal cases and cut off 3 16 inch to reduce case lengths to inches. I loaded 21 grains of Hodgdon Universal in the short cases followed by WAA16 wads. I set the wad ram pressure at 80 pounds on my MEC Junior press to collapse the wad legs enough to leave a sufficient length of case mouth for a star crimp over one ounce of No shot. I added a 1 4- inch washer between the top plate of the press and the crimp starter die to lower the die to form new folds on the case mouths. Last September I stoked my Model 12 with my one-ounce loads and climbed the grass ridges and timbered draws of a blue grouse mountain. Above a seep of a spring, a flock of five grouse roosted beneath a Douglas fir. The grouse pitched off the steep hill, and I fired a quick shot and knocked down a bird. I picked up the bird and carried it in my right hand back up the hill. It made a good counterbalance for the Model 12 in my left hand.

A What If By Kevin Doctari Robertson I have long realized there is a lot more to the pleasurable profession of professional hunting than just taking a client to kill an animal. In my experience, the process, especially when big, dangerous species are involved, ends up taking on the qualities of a longterm relationship sort of like a marriage I suppose, as opposed to a quick, one-night stand. All relationships, any counselor will tell you, should be based on communication. In fact, this can be regarded as its most important foundation stone and in the context of professional hunting, this is no exception. I recently completed a Zambezi Valley buffalo hunt in preparation for the DVD version of my book The Perfect Shot. Upon reflection, it was just as well that my client for the occasion, Pete Chinburg from New Hampshire, and I were well traveled down what I ll call the relationship road. When Pete first made inquiries about hunting a buffalo with me, he asked if it would be okay if he used his much-loved Steyr Scout Rifle in.376 Steyr. To those unfamiliar with this concept or cartridge, they were the brain child of Jeff Cooper one of the U.S.A. s firearms and shooting dons. Scout Rifles are simply modern-day carbines with space-age looking synthetic stocks and short barrels. They also wear long eye relief scopes mounted so far forward that they look to me to be positioned halfway down the rifle s too darn short barrel. Scout Rifles sure are strange looking creations, but there are obviously those who love this somewhat unusual concept. To be 22

Buffalo Hunt Left, Pete Chinburg with a trophy buffalo bull. Above, the.376 Steyr when compared to the other.375 cartridges shown here the.375 Flanged,.375 H&H,.375 Weatherby,.378 Weatherby obviously lacks case capacity. To get 300-grain bullets to attain velocities in the region of 2,300 to 2,350 fps requires some pretty hot loads. honest, I do not fit into this category. Give me handrubbed walnut and the classic lines of an English-crafted rifle any day. The.376 Steyr cartridge is based on a shortened 9.3x64mm case necked up to.375 caliber. In my opinion, it is simply the.375 H&H version of the wellknown 9.3x62mm. Basically developed to be used with 270-grain bullets, the.376 Steyr is obviously short on case capacity, but it will, with a push, shoot 300-grainers in the region of 2,300 to 2,350 fps. Given short shooting distances and precise first shot placement, the better sectional density of these heavier bullets ensures this ballistic combination will work on buffalo, with manageable recoil. This is an important factor for any safari client to consider, one that 76- year-old Pete was well aware of, especially since he had recently undergone shoulder surgery. The alternative, and my preference, was for Pete to use his Belgium-made Browning.375 H&H. Now the.375 H&H, as I m sure Successful Hunter readers realize, has a solid and well-deserved buffalo reputation. In my experience, when heavier than usual 300-grainers are used, this venerable old cartridge really comes into its own. In fact, it becomes absolutely superb buffalo medicine. With this in mind, I went to the trouble of sending Pete a couple of boxes of 380-grain Rhinos so he could develop a load with them just in case. In retrospect, it s just as well that I did. After some careful development, Pete ed to inform me he had settled on a load of 68 grains of IMR- July-August

A What If Buffalo Hunt 4350 ahead of Federal Magnum primers. This had the super-heavy Rhinos traveling pretty close to 2,200 fps, with almost cloverleaf accuracy. From past experience I know this ballistic combination really works on buffalo. That it was also in Pete s opinion manageable made all the more difference as well. Pete s loads for the Steyr were pretty hot in order for 300-grain Swift A-Frames to attain at least 2,300 fps the velocity I insisted he strive for, despite the Scout s too-short 19-inch barrel. The hunt date fast approached, and our communications became more frequent, almost daily in fact. It was at this stage when I realized the decision as to which rifle to take to Africa was weighing heavily on Pete s mind. In the end I told him to bring whatever he was most confident and comfortable with. I imagined this would be the Steyr simply because he had a similar rifle in.308 with which he could, on a fairly regular basis, hit simple going-away sporting clays. A week before the hunt, Pete ed to say he had a problem with his Steyr. The barrel had, after a heavy diet of hot reloads, apparently shot itself loose, and there would not be enough time to have it repaired before he departed for Africa. The.375 H&H Browning it would have to be. Being very much a traditionalist, I admit to being delighted by this sudden turn of events. Once again, it was in retrospect just as well all this happened. Pete and I hunted together in the Dande Safari Area of Zimbabwe s lower Zambezi Valley. Despite having hunted in that part of the world for two decades, the Dande itself was a new area for me, but one in which I was not disappointed. It was crawling with buffalo, and lions. Initially we hunted the herds to get Pete close to buffalo so he could learn how to distinguish between bulls and cows, and to also get him in tune with Africa. It was while doing so that we bumped into a good number of lion. In fact, just about every buffalo herd we tracked also had these formidable predators following them. When this happens, the buffalo herds just go and go for miles on end, until the sick, weak or young start to lag behind. When it does, it becomes easy prey to Africa s most efficient predators and we found plenty of evidence of this. Once Pete had become buffalo acquainted, we switched to hunting Dagga Boys and it was while doing so the chain of events that had resulted in Pete using his.375 H&H and 380-grain Rhinos became, in reality, an absolute blessing. At an isolated spring, early on the seventh morning of the hunt, we picked up the impressively large tracks of two lone bulls. Lone buffalo bulls are known almost universally as Dagga Boys, and we set off tracking them with enthusiasm. Their sloppy green dung was tantalizingly fresh. This indicated they were not too far in front of us another good sign. About an hour into the hunt, the buffalo s spoor crossed over a small gwasha as an erosion gulley is know in Zimbabwe. I simply jumped over this three foot wide obstruction without giving the situation any Kevin examining a young buffalo calf that lion were feeding on. 24

Pete fired at the bull as soon as it stood up, then reloaded, while Kevin was ready to back his shot. further thought. Instead of stepping down into it as he should have, Pete, who was walking behind me, tried to do the same; but on the other side he fell to the ground in agony, clutching his right calf muscle. Within minutes it was swollen to twice its normal size. This was not a good sign, and most definitely not what the closing stages of a buffalo hunt required. (It would later be diagnosed that Pete had in fact torn the calf muscle.) To make walking easier, we cut Pete a long and sturdy walking stick, and with it he hobbled painfully over to a convenient anthill. The bulls we were following were close by, of that I was convinced, so while Pete rested, the trackers and I went to find them. A little more than a mile farther on, we noticed oxpeckers dropping down into a patch of really thick bush. This indicated the two bulls were in there somewhere, resting. Leaving my rifle and cartridge belt with the trackers, who were instructed to watch from a discreet distance, I walked back to the anthill where Pete was mournfully sitting, nursing his painfully swollen lower leg. I explained to him we had found the two bulls, and I offered to carry him, piggyback style, to them. Not a d ** n chance, was Pete s grumpy reply. Thanks for offering, but I ll walk there myself, even if it takes me the rest of the day. There then followed, I m convinced, the slowest buffalo stalk in the history of big game hunting! By clutching onto his long walking stick with both hands and shuffling along sideways, almost crab-like, Pete slowly and bravely shuffled his way toward where the trackers were waiting. With luck, a steady breeze was blowing in exactly the right direction, enabling us to get within 28 paces of the closer of the two bulls. All we could see of him, as he lay there in the thick stuff, was the occasional shake of his head when an oxpecker irritated him and, when he did so, the glint of sunshine off his horn tips. Thankfully, Pete was also able to pick up these movements. Once he had located where the buffalo was lying, we quickly set him up on the shooting sticks, aiming in that direction. Resting buffalo sometimes lie for a long time, and as the wind was by that time starting to swirl, I whispered to Pete to get ready for the shot. My plan, when he was, was to get one of the trackers to break a dry stick. The crack, I was sure, would get the bulls to stand up and look in our direction. Shoot the closest one as soon as he stands up, right on the shoulder like I ve shown you. He is a mature bull and this will be the only chance you ll get so take it, I whispered into Pete s ear. I m going to back your shot, just in case. It s pretty thick in there, and you re in no condition for a long follow-up if your shot isn t perfect. On hearing the crack, the bull was instantly on his feet, side-on to us, but looking in our direction. Take him now! I whispered into Pete s ear, and moments later, he fired. At the shot, the buffalo simply sat down, doglike. As he did so, his head and neck came up nicely. This gave me a good sight picture, and I quickly shot him through the middle of his neck with my.505 Gibbs. A 600-grain,.505-caliber bullet at 2,100 fps hits like the fist of Thor, and this occasion was most certainly proof of this. The heavy Stewart Hi-Performer literally knocked the bull over onto his side, so he ended up lying with his legs pointing toward us. Doing so exposed the bull s sternum and this was where Pete, after shuffling to the right a bit, was able to place two finishing shots. The bull never moved again, and Pete was overjoyed. Despite his problems and the unexpected turn of events, he had collected himself a fine trophy. That the Landcruiser could get there to recover it was another bonus, because it also meant Pete would not have to walk any more a fact for which he was most On the right stands the recovered Rhino that passed through the tree (behind) and still managed to drop a buffalo bull. It retained 68 percent of its original weight. In the middle is another perfectly mushroomed Rhino from one of Pete s finishing-off shots and, on the left, the recovered 600-grain Stewart Hi-Performer from Kevin s backing shot. This bullet actually knocked the buffalo over. July-August

We loaded up the buffalo and took it back to camp where I dissected it in some detail. It was while doing so that I noticed Pete s REMINGTON MODEL798 SAFETY New Design! Hoffman - Belgrade, MT (406) 388-GUNS first shot had landed very high, right on the top section of the shoulder blade. I also noticed the entry wound was a perfect keyhole shape. Was this where you were aiming? I asked Pete. H ** l no. I was right on the middle of the vital triangle, just like you taught me. That evening, while reviewing the footage of the hunt he had captured, our cameraman called me over to show me the kill sequence. In super slow motion, we were able to watch the buffalo bull jump up as the stick broke, see the muzzle blast from Pete s first shot as he fired and the buffalo suddenly sit down. What was also on the small screen was evidence of this shot hitting a small tree trunk as well, and then the tree actually falling over. In the heat of the moment, none of us had noticed this before, but it was obviously this that had caused the bullet to tumble and then impact sideways, high on the shoulder blade. From there, it had then penetrated on, breaking the spine. This was why the buffalo suddenly sat down, doglike. His hind legs were at that instant paralyzed. The skinners recovered the bullet. Amazingly, it still weighed 260 grains, some 68 percent of its original weight. When we realized what had happened, we returned to the kill scene the next morning and quickly found the tree that had been shot through. After photographing it, we cut out the shot-through section and presented it to Pete as a memento of the occasion. I have long believed there is a Despite unforeseen problems, Pete collected a really nice solid-bossed buffalo bull. Thank heavens he was using good, heavy-to-caliber bullets when he did so. reason for all the events that occur in our lives. On many occasions, however, the consequences of such events only become clearer much later on. With regards to Pete and his buffalo hunt, the hypothetical what if question has since that time played heavily on my mind. What if I hadn t sent him those heavy Rhino bullets? What if he had used his Scout Rifle instead of the Browning? What if the bullet in question had been a 300-grain Swift A-Frame (a bullet for which I have the highest regard, so don t get me wrong) at 2,300 fps instead of the super-heavy Rhino at 2,200? Would it have performed as well? This is a question I m afraid I can t answer, but given the mathematics, I somehow have my doubts. The entry hole through the buffalo s shoulder blade indicates the Rhino bullet was tumbling as it did so. There can be no doubt, however, that Diana, the Goddess of Hunting, was smiling upon us all that eventful day. We all realized this and so it was in her honor that we subsequently drank to her, around the campfire that evening many grateful toasts; I just hope she appreciated us doing so. We certainly appreciated her efforts. 26
