1 Chapter 1 : Types of Ducks & Geese Duck Identification Comment: This item shows signs of wear from consistent use, but it remains in good condition and is a good working copy. All pages and cover are intact, but may have aesthetic issues such as small tears, bends, scratches, and scuffs. I have carved several drakes over the years â but I believe this is the first pair of gunners I have ever painted. He quickly mailed back a photo of one already dressed in Butterball plumage. What follows is my interpretation. The Drakes For a gunning decoy, one needs only Black and White for the Drake â but one can always get fancy if one so desires. Similarly, the Hen needs just a bit of Brown mixed in with the Black and White paints to suggest her somber dress. The topcoats are acrylic latex â aka house paint. As usual, I buy the Behr sample jars from Home Depot in a flat finish. If I were painting a whole rig, I would use larger 1-inch or even 1. I begin by marking out the major areas of color on the head and back with white chalk. The Black areas get paint first. To look right, the rump should be blended, shading from darker up on the back to very pale just before the tail feathers. I work with both colors wet and work them back and forth about midway. I first painted the bill the same pale blue-grey that I use on Broadbill and Wigeon and Pintail and Redhead and Ringneck but later covered it with a medium Grey mixed in a dixie cup from a bit of Black and a bit of White. The thing to remember is that mixing Black and White without any other pigments gives a cool Grey â which is appropriate for this species. Slide Show 1 â Painting the Drake 1 â Paint all Black areas first 2 â The White head patch can be just a splotch on the back of the head â but I like some style. Use a bigger brush here. I added the actual colors on the head even though solid Black is sufficient. I just mixed some colors I had on hand for other species. Once the bands of color are in place, I soften the edges by stippling with the ends of the bristles. When the eyes are painted â not glass â I often paint a White dot on the eye at about 1: However, I was working with some varnish on another project so coated the entire eye with it. It gives a more realistic effect â and much less work than installing eyes. As with the Drakes, use chalk to mark the 2 White patches â on the cheek and the speculum. Otherwise, you can use the molded-in contours to separate the back from the sides, et cetera. Page 1

It gives many step by step directions on how to paint the ducks. Chat about duck hunting, and share other duck hunting information. Old mallards into divers Thu Oct 20, How should I paint them Re: Old mallards into divers Thu Oct 20, 5: I have a bunch of old mallard decoys that I would like to paint to Use for diver decoys. How should I paint them Paint them any color or way you want, as long as it is black and white. Old mallards into divers Wed Oct 26, Perfectly serviceable drake Bluebill in under a minute. Some I leave all black for better visibility. If you want to make them perfect use oil base adhesive primer then paint with a brush, feather detail with a fan brush lots of great online resources. Old mallards into divers Tue Nov 01, 1: Old mallards into divers Tue Nov 01, 4: If you wanna keep painting them and painting them and repainting them after every 3rd or 4th hunt, then go to Walmart, grab a couple rattle cans of flat black, and flat white If you wanna make them last, and make the decoy last as a repaint, and save yourself time and money Do as I suggest. And I finally figured out what will make the paint and deek last. Head to toe the deek, not heavy, with the liner Let sit one day White stripe down middle Left rest one day And they will be good to go. The Bed Coat is flat black, no glare I did this with 12 deeks, through them in a decoy bag, all Took them outta the bag Not one chip, in the black, in the white, Or in the deeks. Well worth the couple extra bucks, and does NOT effect the decoy floating at all Old mallards into divers Wed Nov 02, Base of primer grey with black head and tail and a splash of white on the flanks. I then go back and add details checkering on back, bluebill, yellow eyes. Ultra flat clear coat to top it off. Are you spraying plastics dekes. This is my first post been hunting the south shore of Long Island for over twenty years, mostly divers with the occasional puddlers and I am just a few years into sea ducks and they are more addicting than crack. Old mallards into divers Wed Nov 02, 1: Sprays right on and sticks. On the bed liner can, it says paintable So head to toe the deek in liner, then let it cure On a side note, I also bought a yellow Sharpe Paint Pen for 4. Old mallards into divers Thu Nov 03, Just speant about two months painting up bout 60 more into whistlers. Detail dosent much matter as said before, black and white is the ticket. I take alot more time on my decoys, mostly just for the self satasfaction, and it keeps me out of trouble. Also, i use an oil based rustoleum flat for eveything, of course after you rough them up with some sandpaper or wire wheel. Old mallards into divers Sat Nov 12, 2: Old mallards into divers Thu Nov 17, 6: Sorry it took so long. Old mallards into divers Sat Nov 19, 6: Old mallards into divers Wed Nov 23, Sorry for the long delay. So here is a pic of a repainted GHG Shoveler. The one in the middle was just a flat black rattle can, and the two on the ends are with the truck bed liner. These deeks have been on 16 hunts so far this season, and used on every trip. I do not have slotted bags, rather just throw them in a big puddler bag. Great way to convert old crappy dekes into diver dekes, they look like they would do the job! One can of "Truck Bed Liner" covers about deeks depending on size and how heavy a coat you put on them. As you can see from the pic above, it comes out flat black, no shine. Put 2 cans on my X-mas list Page 2

3 Chapter 3 : Painting Bufflehead Gunners Steven Jay Sanford How to Paint Diving Ducks by Mohrhardt, David. Stackpole Books. Used - Very Good. Great condition for a used book! Minimal wear. Half-size Flyers Re-painting Broadbill Decoys This bird was new in the earlys â and stopped a load of shot on her very first day afield. Re-painting gunners is satisfying from an artistic perspective, too, because I can relax, paint quickly, and practice my Impressionism. The impressionistic approach is important for a couple of reasons. First, gunning birds are tools. Their job is to attract others of their species â at least to within gunshot range. Details that look wonderful in the hand or on the mantel are lost on the water. Thus, some things are exaggerated on the bird-in-hand so that they will do their job when in the rig. They have the soft styrofoam Durlon bodies and the hard plastic heads Tenite butyrate with cast iron ballast molded within the keel. The earliest have the brass screw eyes holding the heads. Later birds went to steel screw eyes and then a deeper keel was molded into the foam. The salt water habitat of my decoys rusts both the steel screw eyes and the iron ballasts. In the worst cases, the ballast weights shed big flakes of iron and break out of the foam bodies. This rig was in fairly good shape. These 40 decoys have sat unused on a high shelf in my barn since the mids. Most had fairly good paint and none had lost heads. And, because I plan to use at least 30 of these in my newly-restored Great South Bay Scooter next winter, I want them to look sharp. Repairs first Although none of this batch had broken heads, I decided to reinforce each to prevent it in the future. The whole bird is first saturated with marine epoxy. While the epoxy is wet, I sprinkle fine sawdust â from my band saw â over the whole bird except for the bottom. Once the epoxy cures -usually overnight â I brush off any loose dust. The ballast was escaping from a couple of birds. The next step is to fill any major crevices with a simple caulk. Shot holes were filled as needed. The caulk was smoothed with either a brush or a finger. The first paint to go on is a Grey Primer. I like it for the bottoms of decoys because I can later write my name or initials on it with a Black marker. I also paint the bills with this color â especially on the Drakes. The first step is to paint all of the birds â I am doing a batch of 16 Hens â with a dark brown. I use acrylic latex house paints. I usually get sample jars from Home Depot. This is an example of where I exaggerate for effect. The flight feathers on a Hen Broadbill are a dark greyish- brown, but I use Black to increase the contrast so that it suggests a 3-dimensional effect on the bird. Likewise, the head on a Hen is a very dark brown. I use Black on the face and over the crown and neck to suggest depth to the head. I drag the large brush with very little Black over the chest to make it darker and rougher looking. This photo shows the desired effects both foreward and aft. I bought a very small bottle of acrylic paint for the eyes â from a crafts store. As with the live birds, I usually do not show the speculum in Drakes but I do in Hens. I drag the White forward to soften that edge a bit. The White on the face varies quite a bit in shape â so I vary it too. I scallop the back with the Grey Primer. I just suggest the edges of feather groups and use the Grey sparingly. On smoother birds, I usually stipple this area with the end of a dryish, stiff-bristled brush. The barring on the sides is suggested with Behr Ashwood D I soften spaces between the brightly defined feather edges with a dry brush. The bills are next. Hens have darker bills than Drakes, especially in late-season when the Drakes are in full color. I had been planning to use my Grey Primer darkened with a bit of Black. This is actually a bit too blue for Hens â but I like the way it looks and I really do not believe it will flare any birds. I use a filbert-tipped brush to paint the nails and the nostrils. I use the flat of the brush for the nail and just the edge of the brush tip for the nostrils. The Black on a Greater Scaup bill extends beyond the nail itself so I paint it nice and big. The pupil should be very slightly forward of center. There are 4 more Hens with keels â to be mated with 6 keeled Drakes. The Drakes are easier No custom colors are needed for the Drakes. Th Grey Primer serves for the bottom, the base color on the back and the finish color for the bill. Once the bottoms are dry, the backs and bills are painted in the same step. I use it to cover most of the larger areas. Next, I use the larger â but fairly dry â brush to drag some Black over the back â heavier aft and lighter forward. After all the Black areas are good and dry, I paint the sides White and then stipple the back with it, too. To my eye, the back of a full-plumage Drake is one of the most arresting close-ups in Nature. As with the Hens, the eyes still need to be painted â that Page 3

4 egg-yolk Yellow â and dotted. And the bills need nostrils and broad Black nails. The are the 10 full-keeled newer Broadbill I have â ready for lines and anchors. I still have another dozen flat-bottom older Drakes to finish. Is it possible to send a picture to you maybe you will know what model. I plan to repaint them. I to have a decoy problem. Page 4

5 Chapter 4 : How to Draw Ducks: Profile View - John Muir Laws Ducks in art Gouache and acrylic techniques for painting birds on any surface. Contains spectacular step-by-step painting sequences for three birds, plus instructions and sketches for others. Profile View The profile view of a duck is a great way to record details of plumage and shape. If you draw several species side-by-side, you can construct a mini field guide for yourself and you will find that you can learn to identify the species much more quickly. Drawing two species in comparison is much more helpful than just one. When you see them next to each other, you can make relative observations such as this one has a larger head, or this one has a steeper forehead. Start with a light sketch to block in the shape and add the details on top of this framework. Pay attention to the head shape. There is tremendous variation between species. Click on the thumbnails below to see a step-by-step demonstration of my approach drawing a Northern Pintail. Ducks floating on the water have a horizontal posture. The front end of rapidly swimming ducks will ride lower in the water than the rear. Place an oval body across the posture line. Do not make the mistake of putting the oval above the line, half of the body should be submerged below the surface. Carefully study the size and location of the head and place it as best you can. It helps to imagine a vertical line projected from the chest of the duck. The head is unlikely to be in front of this line. As the duck lowers its head into its feathers, the chest bulges forward. Place quick lines to indicate the bill and tail. You do not see this in dabbling ducks such as this Pintail. Now carve into those circles with stright lines, finding the angles and corners that define the edges of the duck. At this stage, exaggerate the angularity. It is very helpful to look at the negative shapes when carving the angles. Pay particular attention to the shape below the head, behind the neck, and under the tail. Also watch that forehead to bill angle. Now you can draw on top of this framework with confidence and deliberate strokes, knowing that you have the basic shape. If you are field sketching, make extensive color notes directly on top of the drawing or with little pointer lines. I use my own one or two letter codes for colors. Violet is a V, orange is an O. Many colors start with B or G so I use the first and last letters: I now block in the values with a soft pencil. Do not be afraid to push the darks. You may have better luck using a soft 2B pencil rather than that handy HB. I often start painting with the shadows. If I leave them to the end, they will feel like an after thought because they probably are and may blur or smudge other details. I lay in lighter color washes first. I use a Pentel waterbrush so the paint slowly lightens as I work. I start my brush strokes in the areas I know I want to be darker and work out from there. Now I add the darks. Some watercolor artists cringe at the thought of using black paint. I find it really useful for fast field sketches. It is fun to see how punching the blacks makes a drawing pop with contrast. If you find your whole drawing is too pale, you may want to start with a little black to force yourself to adjust to that value as you paint. Are folks seeing this in other regions? My field guides all show white chests. When you start drawing ducks, turn some of your sketches into plumage diagrams. Name and define each part of the duck to help yourself learn and see each region. When I did this with my pintail I discovered that I had no clue what feathers made that black bar on the side. See if you can figure it out by doing an online image search. It is not what you thinkâ So what feathers are that little black patch? Leave a comment below and happy sketching. Please share if you like it! Page 5

Chat about duck hunting, and share other duck hunting information. What color of paint to use on open water boat? Mon Mar 14, 1: I might buy used and in my neck of the woods every one likes to paint everything olive. Mon Mar 14, 2: Mon Mar 14, 3: Mon Mar 14, 4: I was thinking more like rattle can colors. Most guys use flat or matte but the boat will likely be wet in short order so you could argue why bother. Mon Mar 14, 5: Go to the boat forum or to a boat maker site and you will see several different painting skeems. Think about when you are down on the lower "C" and you look across the water. What you see is alot of light reflections that give you the perception of the colors white and also black. Do you remember ever hunting down on the lower river when you hunted most of the day and did not see wind at all, I doubt it. Mon Mar 14, 6: I know what you are talking about now. Tue Mar 15, 6: I figured for puddle ducks I would cover it with sticks and grass and what have you. Wed Mar 16, Problem with a true open water layout is that it would be tricky to use for puddlers once camoed up. A canoe would be easier to paddle and haul gear. I already use an aquapod, if you are familiar with those. Wed Mar 16, 1: They have an all round bottom and are narrow compared to a open water layout. A layout like the MLB has a portion that drops below the bottom, and it would make it very difficult to handle. Not to mention the limited space Unless you could drop it in a pond and hunt right there would be a lot of frustrating work. If you did have to travel any sort of distance you would still need a tender. It is oil based and has held up for 5 seasons very nice! Thu Mar 17, Fri Mar 18, 6: Its only got 1 side mirror! Fri Mar 18, Wed Apr 20, I have it on my layout Re: Thu Apr 21, 3: Afterall, they use it to camoflauge their ships. Fri Apr 22, Sat May 14, Check out the photos I will try that!
