E - Gazette Mk II New Zealand Antique & Historical Arms Association Inc. # 7 July 2011 EDITORIAL There is an old saying for evil to triumph good men only have to do nothing So if you did not have opportunity to make a submission on the Arms (MSSA and import control) Amendment Bill 2011 all is not lost, you can still talk to your local MP and express your concerns. This Bill is not only a threat to firearms ownership it is an attack on democracy, when laws can be changed by Regulation without public consultation. Likewise if your Branch is not functioning as you would wish, don t sit on the sidelines and leave it all to others, get involved and have your say. Branches need their members to be actively involved if they are to flourish and attract new members. Another old saying has it that: the more you put in to something the greater will be your rewards. Please think about what you can do to help with the running of your local Branch. I say this because I know that many Branches struggle to find new members to fill key jobs. If you have comments to make or news or articles to contribute, send them to oilyrag@xtra.co.nz All views (and errors) expressed here are those of the Editor and not necessarily those of the NZAHAA Inc. Phil Cregeen, Editor oilyrag@xtra.co.nz AN INTERSTING BAYONET This bayonet is an India 1A Long Bayonet for the Indian SLR (L1A1), manufacture by RFI (Ishapore) in Unlike other SLR bayonets it has wooden grips and a blade longer by almost 2 inches, it has a recessed catch similar to the L1A4. I would like to draw your attention to the following website which is sponsored by one of my subscribers which features some interesting bayonets: Also thanks to John Carter for providing the brief article on British socket bayonets. Do you have a modified or unusual bayonet that you would care to share with our readers? Send details and a photo to oilyrag@xtra.co.nz

A brief history of the development of the British Socket Bayonet by John Carter The earliest fighting weapon was probably a sharpened stick used as a spear or lance. A lot later firearms were introduced, and after the first shot they used their daggers stuffed into the muzzle to be used as a spear. This was the original idea of the Plug Bayonet. The first mention of military bayonets occurs in the early 17 th century around The obvious disadvantage with this practice was you couldn t reload or fire your musket, to get around this problem the Socket Bayonet was invented about The Brown Bess Socket Bayonet fitted over the muzzle and locked up behind the fore sight, which allowed the loading and firing of the musket. There is a slight curve in the blades of socket bayonets away from the bore to allow the hand on the rammer not to be stabbed. There was one small snag with this idea and that was the bayonet could sometimes fall off the end of the musket when you needed it most!! The Indian Pattern Bayonet has a small spring fitted to prevent this. The pattern 1838/1839 bayonets have the same triangular blade as the previous model with provision for the Hanoverian catch, (although some were later made with Lovell s catch) The Pattern1839 Sea Service Musket Socket Bayonet has the Hanoverian catch and was specially made for the shortened pattern naval musket, it has a slightly enlarged 4 inch socket and a 17 inch blade. In 1851 with the introduction of the new mini rifle the socket bayonet was modified by adding a locking ring, this was the Pattern 1853 Socket Bayonet. The blade length was still 17 inches, It would also fit some Enfield s and Sniders. For the Naval Enfield & Snider a Pattern 1858 Sea Service Cutlass Bayonet was developed similar in size and style to the naval cutlass With the introduction of the Martini Henry a Pattern 1876 Socket Bayonet was manufactured with a smaller socket and a blade of 22 inches Later when the Martini Enfield rifle was introduced a Pattern 1895 Socket Bayonet was made with smaller diameter socket but same length blade. This was the last pattern of the socket bayonets Nearly all my socket bayonets are for sale anyone interested contact me by phone: or johncarter@onthenet.com.au

NOTES ON THE CONSERVATION OF LEATHER by Donna Nobilo At the Northland Branch June meeting we had the pleasure of a workshop on caring for leather equipment, provided by local leather worker Donna Nobilo. Her lecture notes containing some useful tips are repeated here. APPRAISE FIRST Is it of historic significance? Seek expert advice from Te Papa or Auckland Museum. Are you going to use it i.e. re-enactments? Is it useable? Too fragile? Consider purchasing reproduction replica and display the original. BEFORE DISPLAYING How dirty? Not very softly brush and/or vacuum. Grubby, may have jockeys of grease. Copper rivets with green verdigris. Rusty buckles. Broken and/or missing parts. CONSERVATION OF LEATHER Everything on earth that has been alive is breaking down. Conservation of leather is aimed at slowing the deterioration so that the article may be viewed by future generations. Appraise first. If in doubt do nothing. Leather has three main enemies water, heat and salt. If leather is mouldy wash with white vinegar. Use luke warm water, sponge and Sunlight soap or Saddle soap without Glycerine. Toothbrush around buckles and hard to get places. Do not scrub wet leather you ll end up with suede. Allow to dry. Not in direct sun or by the fire. Clean verdigris with paste of baking soda. APPLICATION OF DRESSINGS Do not use any Petroleum based oils on leather. They will destroy leather. Use Neat s-foot oil or Olive oil. Neat s-foot oil will only rot linen thread onwards polycotton or nylon is used. Apply oil to flesh side (back) of leather. On grain side (smooth) use quality dressing. Beeswax will polish leather. Apply sparingly with soft cloth allow to dry and polish. Several light applications are better than one heavy one.

INSECT DAMAGE Borer, silverfish, moth, snails and mice. For borer and moth larvae freeze article in freezer for at least two weeks. (Ask permission first!) Wrap in gladwrap or cloth and plastic bag. Label with date. Allow to thaw naturally for at least 24 hours before touching. Do not bend frozen fabrics! Remove frass (insect poop) so articles can be monitored for any new invasions. Articles that can be frozen also include wool, felt, wood, metals and fabrics. Don t use mothballs with articles they give off decaying gases. STORING/DISPLAYING As things degrade they give off Sulphur, Formaldehyde and Nitrates. These gases speed up the deterioration of other articles. Things that give off bad gases include Plastics, acid paper, sellotape, wool, newsprint, cardboard, expanded foam, sponge rubbers, rubber bands, particle board and customwood. Do not store articles with any of these as they will cause artefacts to degrade faster. Paint custom wood and timber with water based polyurethane or acrylic paint. At least four coats. Allow to cure for two weeks before using. Use washed cotton sheeting for displays or wrapping articles in for storage. Smoke and dust cause surface damage to articles. Smoking or eating food around your collection is not only dangerous but could also attract pests. Store at constant temperature between C. LABELLING Tag articles with acid free card tags and write with pencil it won t fade. Felt or ball point pen written on porcelain or leather will travel right through to the other side. For fabric articles make cotton labels and sew them on. DON T LET THEM SEIZE YOUR GUNS Customs are now seizing all firearms and parts that are not covered by the appropriate import permit and properly described as firearms or parts thereof. Infractions of the correct procedure can lead to a raid on your home by Customs and Police and all firearms found being seized. Import permits MUST be obtained BEFORE the goods land in New Zealand. And the goods MUST be accurately described on the Customs documentation.

NATIONAL SHOOT 2011 Once again the National Shoot attracted a very small attendance, I ask myself is it worth continuing with this event. If you think it should be continued, why aren t you supporting it? What are your views? The following report from Nigel Johnson of the hosting Nelson Branch Despite awful weather on Friday and a pitiful turnout - 8 registered shooters; we proceeded on Saturday in much better conditions: where there were less than 2 shooters we didn't run the event and nobody got an automatic placing - i.e. if 3 competitors we only awarded 1st and 2nd: Event 1 M/L Shotgun 1st - Nigel Johnson 8/10 Event 2 B/L Shotgun 1st - Allan Colville 8/10 2nd - Des Ching 3/10 Event Snider 1st Allan Colville 34/50 2nd - Laurie Staig 27/50 Event 4 577/450 Martini 1st - Des Ching 42/50 2nd - Allan Colville 37/50 Event 5A Orig. M/L Rifle- No Contest Event 5B Repro M/L Rifle 1st - Laurie Staig 35/50 2nd - Maurice Taylor 32/50 Event 5C Open M/L Rifle 1st - Allan Colville 43/50 Event 6 B/L BP Rifle 1st - Allan Colville 46/50 2nd - Laurie Staig 26/50 Event 7 Sniper No Contest Event 8 Service Rifle 1st - Laurie Staig (Brazilian Mauser) 86/100 2nd- Russell Chilton (Swedish Mauser) 82/100 3rd - Nigel Johnson (MAS 36) 71/100 Event 9 MSSA - No Contest!! Event 10 Offhand Rifle 1st - Allan Colville 39/50 2nd - John Coote 36/50 3rd - Des Ching 30/50 Event Rimfire 1st - Jonathon Coote(No 8) - 93/100 2nd - Nigel Johnson (Savage with HG history) 81/50 Event 12 Cannon No Contest Event 13 Demo Matchlock - 1st - Maurice Taylor (Venetian Matchlock) 32/50 So there were only 2 events with more than 3 competitors and yes there were two J Cootes (and yes they are related). HAVE YOU GOT A PLAN? In the unfortunate event of your untimely death (it comes to us all eventually) have you made a plan for the disposal of you firearms? In the event of your death your Next of Kin must: Inform the Police & remove the firearms from your premises to a secure storage. Possible solutions are: A younger family member with a FAL and the appropriate endorsements who can take custody. Nominate a friend with the appropriate FAL endorsements to take possession until the sale of your collection can be arranged. Prepare a list of your collection with reserve prices and label all the items. You know what everything is and what you paid for it but would your family? Don t leave your family in the lurch, have a plan
