8 ANIMAL CAPTURE ONLY S - BIG GAME DESERT BIGHORN SHEEP YEAR START & END AREA(s) REGION NUMBER LOCATION/ COMMENTS DBS 1 BLM SW 10 rams and 10 ewes Dominguez/Escalante NCA The primary objective of this project would be to determine homerange sizes, foray distances, and map seasonal use areas for desert bighorn sheep within S-62 in relation to domestic sheep allotments and use areas. The primary goal would be to use bighorn use data and domestic sheep use data to better develop strategies to prohibit interaction between bighorns and domestic sheep and goats. The secondary goal would be to develop recreation guidelines to minimize stress induced on bighorns during critical times of the year. A tertiary objective would be to determine places for habitat improvement projects to improve habitat quality and abundance, which could lessen the effects of human disturbance, domestic sheep and goat interaction, drought conditions, and predation; while improving the overall health of the desert bighorn herd within S-62. 15 ANIMAL CAPTURE AND MOVEMENT PROPOSALS - BIG GAME RELEASE SITE AREA(s) REGION ROCKY MOUNTAIN BIGHORN SHEEP RBS 1 wl $/ Gore Canyon-S77 9 NW /NUMBER Basalt-S animals COMMENTS Supplemental transplant from Basalt herd planned for winter of Summer and winter ground counts in Basalt have been used to track progress toward pre-transplant goal of 40+ ewes, which is the trigger used to transplant from this herd. Conditions should be met by winter of to allow transplant of 14 or more sheep to Gore Canyon. RBS 1 wl $/ Gribbles Park/Badger Creek 13 SE S-51 Bar NI 20 animals In the winter of 2012 the Parks and Wildlife Commission approved the removal of the remaining 13 sheep in the Gribbles Park population and take them into captivity for purpose of research by Washington State University. The intent of this action was to remove the remaining animals so we could conduct a transplant and start over with this population. We successfully captured the remaining ewes in this population and have begun transplant operations with the successful movement of nine sheep in October RBS 1 wl $/ Table Mountain/Big Hole 13 SE S animals The Table Mountain/Big Hole area has significant areas of bighorn sheep habitat. Previous biologists and DWMs believed that sheep from the Arkansas Canyon were using this habitat and therefore, it did not need a transplant. In 2011, we started monitoring the sheep in the Arkansas Canyon in a study that is being funded by Over the River (OTR) Corp. Through the monitoring of collared sheep from this study, we have not documented any sheep movement into this available habitat. Therefore, we would like to perform a transplant into this area and the use the Mount Mestas herd in S-50 as a source. This transplant will be utilized as a replicate to the density dependence study that was initiated a number of years ago. PRONGHORN PH 1 NA San Luis valley-dau A16 (GMU 80/81) 17 SW SE Region (east of I-25) 60 animals Placeholder for the potential augmentation of an existing population that was severely impacted by drought in the early 2000 s. Each of these locales has a small, naturally occurring population of moose that have immigrated from adjacent established moose units. Formal site evaluations for these sites will begin in FY and will be completed prior to preparation of a full transplant proposal. A transplant proposal would not occur until at earliest.
