I was first elected to council 6 years ago on a foundation of change and improvement. I believe we have achieved much of that. I wish to stand once again to keep that momentum and see us continue to improve. My main focus is supporting our scientific research and that as a council we should be making our decisions based on quality scientific information and from sources of best knowledge where possible. Personally I have a strong interest in wetland and habitat creation, and river and wetland protection. On my property I am also exploring and implementing methods of lower 4
impact and less intensive farming and trying more diverse sources of income that are more sustainable. I also believe we will see a marked change in our council this year with an influx of new councilors, and feel I can offer 6 years of experience and continuity. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions COCKS David AUCKLAND SOUTH Keen gamebird hunter and conservationist Joined the Acclimatisation Society 41 years ago Member of Eden Papakura Clevedon Miranda Fish & Game Association for 31 years. Thank you Call to discuss your concerns
DICKEY Geoff AUCKLAND SOUTH Hi all, my name is Geoff Dickey and I am 42. I own and operate a family car sales business in Pukekohe. I am married to my wife Nicola and have 3 boys all growing up to become outdoor kids. From the early ages I have been involved in the hunting and fishing scene due to family members, with some great memories. I in turn like to create these memories for future generations to come. I have been actively involved in Fish & Game wetlands for over 10 years now and seen ways to improve these and go forward. One of my passions is pest control to create better breeding areas and results. This is one area I would like to take further. I am standing this year for council elections to hopefully be able to offer assistance in the field and be able to contribute back to a great tradition for years to come. Geoff Dickey HOWARD William NORTHERN WAIKATO I am 37, a Kiwibank Branch Manager and a passionate waterfowl hunter. I hunt mainly the Lower Waikato River, Lake Waikere and the Whangamarino areas and have concerns with the vast drop in the duck population over the past 10 years. I have been a member of the Franklin Acclimatisation Society for 20 years and have been the secretary and vice president for the past 8 years for the past 5 years I have been an honorary ranger I am a co-organiser of the duck banding in the Franklin area. The reason I am standing is: to give the Franklin and Lower Waikato River Delta a voice on the Auckland Waikato Fish & Game Council to encourage youth and new people into our sport ensure that we continue with the mallard research and put actions in place to turn around the current duck population decline to encourage all licence holders into habitat enhancement and trapping to ensure the sport is kept to a sport not a slaughter of our precious resource to ensure our resource is going to be around for generations to come in a sustainable state work with Fish & Game user groups in a more collaborate way. I believe that I have the skills and ability to act in the best interests of all Auckland Waikato Fish & Game licence holders. Please call me after hours on or 6
me at on any fish and game issue. JUBY Nigel CENTRAL WAIKATO For both hunters and anglers, I believe that three issues define our sport s future. 1. Habitat; game birds and fish thrive in high quality environments 2. Access; better access opens up the environment to us all 3. Participation; engaging new people ensures that our sports have a future I am committed to all three of these issues and am particularly passionate about fostering participation and development - both youth and adult. About myself 47 years old, two school age children own and operate a successful business lifelong angler, lapsed hunter immediate past president of Hamilton Anglers Club. Jointly responsible for angler development and kids fishing executive member of the Federation of Freshwater Anglers former NZ representative angler member of Lake Cameron Care Group with responsibility for pest control fly fishing addict who fishes around 100 days each year Last season, with the support of AWF&G, I fished all of the rivers and streams featured in the region s angler access pamphlets. My blog - aw45challenge.blogspot.co.nz, has had over 20,000 reads. I support scientific research such as the current mallard and brown trout projects. I believe in partnerships - working with, rather than against others where possible. The council needs angler as well as shooter representation and, should I be elected, I believe that my regional knowledge, scientific and business experience as well as my enthusiasm will benefit both fish and game. Phone , to discuss any fish and game issues. KERR Andrew NORTHERN WAIKATO Based in Te Kauwhata, 45 years old married with 3 teenage children and a current Auckland Waikato F&G councillor representing the North Waikato sub region. I am an enthusiastic game bird hunter and fisherman and have also been an honorary Fish & Game ranger for the past 14 years. 7
I am standing again for the North Waikato sub region as I want to continue with the work that has been done towards improving the water quality and habitat in the entire North Waikato region including Lake Waikare and the Port Waikato delta. These waterways are a long way from where they once were and continued focus is required to do the best we can to get them back to their former state for both water quality and waterfowl numbers. I also support the mallard research project that has been running in the Auckland Waikato region as it is starting to provide some very useful data. This data will help us make more informed decisions on managing the game bird resource now and in the future. The goal is to ensure there are a sustainable number of game birds available for future generations of hunters to enjoy as much as we have in years gone by. SHAW Peter Cyril SOUTHERN WAIKATO I am married with an adult son and daughter. A retired dairy farmer, I have always encouraged all landowners to preserve wetlands, plant trees and filter plants. I also work as a fencing contractor. in three years I have raised 500 plus mallard ducklings that, when fledge, disperse throughout the district for all game hunters to harvest or wildlife fans to enjoy watching! fully involved with current mallard research project trapping, banding and giving general assistance as required game bird licence holder since my teens Te Awamutu Fish & Game committee member life member since 2002 represented Ward 6 on Tree Committee awarded the Auckland/Waikato Fish & Game Wildlife Farm Enhancement in 1997 have had over 40 years involvement with the Te Awamutu Fish & Game Tree Nursery this has been on our property the last 12 years vermin, pest control and environment enhancement around local peat lake oppose privatising our resources believe young people and others with limited resources need to have access to hunting, fishing and tramping. Interests trees of all species for shade, food and property improvement keen tramper enjoying native bush and wildlife reading and landscaping past member of Paterangi School Committee and Hall Committee (Chairman) Phone:
SHERRARD Colin CENTRAL WAIKATO I bring with me a lifetime involvement in F&G, 23 years councillor currently NZ F&G Council representative honorary ranger Huntly (life member), Te Kauwhata Clubs and established Ward 3 licence holder/shooters since early teens extensive knowledge of the F&G model governance excellent relationship with staff supporter of habitat initiatives and enhancement (zero habitat loss) a concerted research effort is required to identify reasons for the decline in duck numbers locally and nationally and what can be done to reverse this worrying trend. It is pleasing to see that the problem has been acknowledged nationally and we can start moving forward with coordinated research and I will be promoting further research and initiatives to enhance duck numbers am a lateral thinker, open minded and look at the overall picture have concerns over continued economic pressure on the environment and commercialisation of the resource an advocate of regional autonomy and a good relationship with New Zealand Council I hope to return to the NZ F&G Council and do my best for game bird hunters. I ve farmed all my life along with other business interests. We currently own a small farm which includes 100 acres of the Opuatea/Churchill wetlands. This keeps me in touch with nature on a daily basis I have and always will do my best to enhance the hunting and fishing opportunities for YOU the average everyday licence holder Continuity is important. Thank you for your past and future support. I m not afraid to speak out. Ph SMITH Brendon CENTRAL WAIKATO I am married with three kids and live in Cambridge. I am a tractor and machinery field technician. I am passionate about hunting and fishing in Aotearoa, and making sure it stays available for all to use and access. I am on the committee for the Upper Piako Wetland Management Association. I am also involved in tree planting etc. I want to bring a fresh voice and ideas to the council. We have a declining duck population and believe if we are not 9
proactive and act we may lose our sport. In my job I deal with a lot of landowners, fellow hunters and fisherman and have my fingers on the pulse of duck numbers, habitat issues, water ways, fish numbers etc. I want to work towards the licence holder being kept informed and to have your say heard. We all want our kids to be able to enjoy the outdoors doing what we love, hunting and fishing. In voting for me together I believe we all win. SMITH Shane HAURAKI/COROMANDEL I am 32 years of age, a service engineer. I am living in Cambridge. I am married with 3 young daughters who are also keen on hunting and fishing. I have a strong commitment to enhance and develop hunting and fishing resources for the present and future generations, through promotion and education. I am currently on the Upper Piako Wetland Management Association board and have been for the last 2 years. My main areas of interest are in: field and habitat improvements including retention, building and enhancing wetlands, rivers and lakes educating and training new and current hunting and fishing enthusiasts building and enhancing relationships between land owners, farmers, the public and stakeholders in and around wetlands, rivers, lakes and habitats building and enhancing relationships between all Fish & Game regions and the governing body I believe that this is the time to let new people with energy and ideas, a younger generation of enthusiasts to govern Auckland/Waikato Fish & Game region we need a change and new direction because we re losing habitat, wetlands, hunters, fishers, duck numbers, fish numbers and water quality. SUTCLIFFE Lauren Late candidate withdrawal. WILLIAMSON Euan HAURAKI/COROMANDEL Qualified engineer Keen gamebird hunter and deer stalker I am: Chairman of the Central Shepherd Wetland Association Engineer for the Falls Rd, Whangamarino Wetland Development now known as the Williamson wetland 10
Have raised over a million dollars for wetland development outside of F&G funds Have been heavily involved in wetland development for over 23 years In that time have been instrumental in re-creation of more than 774 ha of wetlands, for recreational hunting, fishing and wildlife Awarded a Merit Certificate by Auckland/Waikato Fish & Game Council for my work in wetland development Representing Waikare Marae improving the health of Lake Waikare starting with the Te Kauwhata treatment plant discharge Other areas of interest: Fully support continued research into mallards Listen to what licence holders want Continue to fight for access rights to hunting and fishing for all New Zealanders Regional autonomy- not run from Wellington Local hunters and anglers continue to manage their sport Support for youth in our sport Oppose commercialism- privatisation of our sport, retain birth right of New Zealanders to hunt and fish Habitat enhancement, creation, restoration etc Work with other groups to make things happen 1 support more birds in the sky, fish in our waters and licence holders in our sport - young and old Please call if you would like to discuss your ideas or concerns Phone Thank you for your support YOUNG Murray AUCKLAND NORTH I am a dairy farmer and agricultural contractor aged 67, married with two adult children. I have been an active hunter ever since I was able to shoulder a gun and have a deep concern at the loss of habitat in the Auckland-Waikato area, and the pollution of our waterways, especially the estuary in areas. Young people are the future of our sport and we need to encourage them towards hunting and fishing. If every hunter and angler could bring an extra person (young or old) into our sport; this would ensure its future. As a farmer, I fully understand and appreciate the provision of access by land owners to hunters and anglers, and the crucial importance of maintaining this. Council have been successful in maintaining good relations with landowners over access and if re-elected I will ensure this will continue. I am especially keen to make sure that our sport continues to 11
12 be run by local hunters and anglers rather than bureaucrats in Wellington, and that our hunting and fishing heritage is protected both now and for future generations of New Zealand. I have been a member of the Acclimatisation Society Fish & Game Council for Helensville sub-society for 40 years. Delegate for Auckland Waikato Fish & Game Member of Game Committee for 24 years (last 6 as chairman) Honorary ranger for 27 years Fish & Game councillor for 31 years Chairman Auckland Waikato Fish & Game Council for the last 15 years.
