3 CANDIDATE STATEMENTS Heather Furniss I would like to nominate myself to be a member on the New Zealand Ultimate board. I have been playing and administrating Ultimate Frisbee for around 10 years, starting in Chile, before returning to Australia where I played in Sydney from casual pick-up to Division 1 Nationals. I now here in New Zealand in the Waikato region and have been on the Waikato Ultimate board since its inception in I started as the secretary, then became a general member, and will continue my role this year as the secretary. Outside of the Frisbee community, I work part-time as a Librarian in Morrinsville. Janelle Lamrock I am currently living in Whangarei, and working for Opus International Consultants as a Graduate Civil Engineer. I moved here with my husband and our two dogs a year ago, from Fredericton, NB (Canada). I started playing Ultimate 4 years ago, and have been playing more competitively for about 2 years now. I have taken a Level 1 coaching course for Ultimate back in Canada, and was then involved with coaching a group of junior players for a Summer (Aged 10-13), and another group that Fall (Aged 14-15). Since having moved to Whangarei, I have been quite involved with the local club, and have been working hard to grow the sport in the region and increase the number of participants. For the first time ever, Whangarei was able to have a team represented at New Zealand Mixed Nationals (2016) - although we did need to recruit a few former players. :) I would like to join the board to be able to represent the smaller communities in New Zealand that are trying hard to recruit and grow the sport in their region. I think NZU would benefit greatly from growing their Mixed community and having more opportunities for Mixed teams to play at a competitive level. Also, in addition to recruiting at the high school level, I think it would especially benefit the smaller communities if we had recruiting strategies for young adults, creating a stronger core. Looking forward to any and all efforts in collaborating to make Ultimate the best it can be. :) 3
4 Jana Makar In December 2012, I moved to Auckland from Canada. One of my first tasks upon arrival was to connect with the NZ frisbee scene, and it's kept me busy ever since. Over the last 4+ years, I have played on various competitive mixed teams and have helped develop the Auckland women's scene through Vixenz (as a player, as a member of the squad's Leadership Team, and as President of the Vixenz Club). Over these last few years, I've played more beach ultimate than I've ever played in my life in Canada. ;-) I've also been honoured to represent NZ internationally at two Worlds events (WUCC 2014 with Artemis and WUGC 2016 with Whaitiri). I'm submitting my name for the NZU Board because in my short time here, I have seen the local, regional and national scenes develop in tremendous ways. It's an exciting time for ultimate in NZ and I'd like to help support its ongoing growth. Also, I have a passion for women's ultimate and I want to increase the number of female voices represented at the Board level. Ultimately, I'd like to join the NZU Board so that I can give back to the community that's welcomed me with open arms since day one. Steve Sigley I ve been playing ultimate since the early 90 s and been involved in the administration of our sport since shortly after that. I am currently the President of WDS, I have been the Treasurer of both NZFDA and WDS, the Secretary of WDS, and a General Member at different times. Though I play less than I used to I am still very keen on our sport. As our sport grows and matures the organisations governing our sport are growing and maturing as well. We ve seen this in some of the actions that both NZU and WDS are taking. I m keen on helping out with organizational maturity side of Ultimate s growth by working towards clearly defining the relationship, rights, obligations, and responsibilities between NZU, the Regional bodies, the Clubs, and their collective Members and if necessary implementing those definitions in NZU and WDS constitutions. I m also keen on removing on removing any informal barriers to members participating in governance processes such as the AGMs and SGMs. By sorting this out now we get to do it in a considered, timely, and unrushed manner. This is really boring stuff but it is key to NZU s future and finances as well as the sport in New Zealand as a whole. 4
5 Jeremy Snook Playing since Set up Rotorua Ultimate in Led the organisation of the first BOP team to Mixed Nats in Involved with Rotorua Ultimate teams which won spirit at Brass Monkey 2015, and Indoor Nationals B grade 2015 and Involved with organising Brass Monkey since 2003, including several years as TD. TD of Uni Games ultimate competition when hosted in Rotorua in In early 2000s, spent a year or 2 as Membership Secretary, and then President of the NZ Flying Disc Association. Aside from work with Rotorua ultimate, I have assisted various people and organisations (primarily in the Central North Island, but through the wonders of the internet, everywhere) for many years, ranging from getting clubs or regional bodies set up, player recruitment and retention, tournament organisation, coaching, marketing, treasury, etc. Involved in coaching beginner to intermediate level players, including high school players. Outside of ultimate, I'm married with 2 kids (whom I hope will have the opportunity to play ultimate throughout their school years). I work as an ICT project manager and have extensive experience as a business analyst (understanding stakeholder needs, and working out how to meet them). In the spirit of transparency, I aim not to focus on the elite level of the sport (plenty of others have done, and will continue to do that) but rather grass-roots development - however I certainly appreciate and respect the higher levels of our sport as a vital part of the player retention strategy. Rest assured that I'm a firm believer in investing at all levels of the pathway (for players, coaches, and administrators). I'm passionate about regional development, delighted to see this as a high priority of NZU's, and keen to utilise my experience to help grow ultimate around NZ. 5
