Forward Since 2006 Gathered Realms LARP (Formerly Alliance LARP Ohio) has been in operation providing quality entertainment to game enthusiasts from all over the United States. Running games based in the fantastical world of Vandlar, players leave the dice behind to live the adventure. Playing the role of a noble hero, a cunning thief, or a wizard with powers to rival the great Merlin himself, players of Vandlar LARP are able to leave the real world for a weekend at a time and let their imagination carry them where they really want to be. We are stepping outside of our norms in order to bring you Virus28, a new and exciting Zombie survival game. The rules are simple, the plot is thick, and there is only one goal; survive 28 hours! Story For nearly 300 years the world has seen a relative peace. Nuclear weapons have nearly all been decommissioned; chemical weapons are a thing of the distant past. Our natural resources are long depleted but humanity lives on. Though many have died from starvation, dehydration, and famine, the human race has endured. New technology provides us with limited but needed energy and all but the most radical countries have unified under one flag. History however has taught us that no matter how much good there is in the world, there will always be an evil that needs to be defeated and the new world is no different. Every day brings a new challenge and each year we slip closer and closer to living in a world of war, although this time it is not man against man but man against the most ruthless evil. In 2800, a virus unlike anything the world has ever seen swept across the world killing nearly seventy percent of the population. Swedish scientists unveiled what we were to believe was a cure. Not only was it not a cure it was a disaster. Vaccine 28 was designed to combat an epidemic of unbelievable proportions by building a thick barrier around the blood cells. The idea was that if no disease could penetrate the body, the disease would slowly fade away and eventually disappear from the world. At first the vaccine appeared to work. Those infected with the disease did not die or turn like those before them, however, it was soon discovered that the vaccine caused the cells and body to mutate. The thick barrier that the vaccine created did little more than trap the virus allowing it to take over the host s body after their death. Over the next three years, the disease continued to spread across the world from Russia to the Netherlands, from Aruba to the West Indies. No place remained untouched by this unrelenting plague. It was not long before the world s major armies fell to the walking dead. Major cities all over the world were over run and no longer safe to those who were still alive. One of the few places that remained secure is where our story begins, the Lewis Arboretum, An old Girl Scout camp outside St. Clairsvile Ohio. It is here that we make our final stand. It is here that the toughest survivors of our world will congregate and fight for survival. The goal is simple, but getting there is far from it. Word has been received that a military helicopter will be landing in the camp to ferry survivors to Fort Benning Georgia, the only remaining military base in the USA, sometime in the next 28 hours. It is the goal and duty of the refugees to hold the camp until that time and assure that as many people as possible are able to make it to the ferry alive.

Player Safty RULES referee to sort out the situation. We want the game to be as fluid as possible and multiple HOLD calls will only take away from the environment of the game. Drugs and Alcohol Drugs and alcohol are not permitted on site during play. If you are noticeably impaired you will be asked to leave. All players must read our rules and sign our legal release forms prior to participating. Participation in Virus 28 is 100% voluntary and at your own risk. We are not responsible for any incidental injuries or damage to property. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign their form. If you are under the age of 16 a parent or guardian must be present at the event in order for you to participate although it is not required for them to participate. The minimum age to participate in Virus 28 is 14 years of age. Anyone younger will not be permitted on site so please don t ask. Proof of age may be requested if the staff is in doubt, so please plan accordingly. SAFTEY HOLDS In the event that someone is injured (real life Injured) or if a safety hazard is noticed such as someone about to back into a tree or fall over a small hill a HOLD should be called. When a HOLD is called GAME PLAY STOPS! Everyone should repeat the hold call loudly, stop what they are doing and look at the ground. (This is to avoid players looking around to see if someone is sneaking up on them!) Once the hold is called the person who stopped play should announce why. The only valid reason for a HOLD to be called is for safety reasons. If you believe that a player is not recognizing that they have been hit you should seek out a game Referees Referees are game officials that will be walking around during game play wearing WHITE HEADBANDS. They will be considered out of the play and may not be attacked. A referee may issue rulings on the field concerning game play and their call is final. Excessive arguing with a game referee could lead to ejection from site! Out of play areas Out of Play areas are areas where game play is essentially on hold. No combat may occur in an out of play area. The smoking area, parking area, inside cars, inside the kitchen, and the bathroom are all out of play areas. SMOKING Smoking is only permitted in designated out of play areas. The time limit to be in one of these areas is 15 minutes. Anyone caught spending excessive time in a smoking area to avoid combat will be asked to move by a game referee. Anyone caught abusing this rule will be asked to leave. Anyone caught smoking in a non-designated area will be asked to move to the proper area. This area may be cleared by a game referee during major Zombie waves or if important storyline is occurring.

RESTROOMS RULES Exotic Weapons Restrooms are also an out of play area. Time in the rest room will be limited to 20 minutes, this includes taking a shower. Please keep in mind that minors may be present at our game. Showers are SAME SEX ONLY. No co-ed showering will be permitted. Kitchen For safety reasons the kitchen is considered out of play. Only approved game officials may enter the kitchen. Players who come with highly modified weapons or weapons of their own design must see a game referee for approval. Please keep in mind that player made/modified weapons may force you into a combat profession instead of a medic profession (please see the section on classes for full details.) A game referee will make the final determination on if a weapon may be used or if it will be limited to a combat profession. Classes Virus 28 has two available classes as outlined below. Each class has its own abilities and restrictions. More classes may be added at a later date. Combat specialist: What to Bring? Players must provide their own weapons to use during the game play (directions on building a boffer weapons such as swords, maces, etc... can be found on the following pages). If you choose to modify a Nerf gun, our staff will test it by shooting you at point blank range. If your gun hurts you, it will likely hurt others and will not be permitted. Cabins and beds will be available for an additional charge. If you choose to sleep in a tent or camper you must provide these on your own. Please see the price chart located on the forums at Combat specialists are proficient with an array of weapons and have the ability to inflict extra damage several times a day however they lack the knowledge needed to administer medical treatment. Combat specialists have the following skills: 1. Headshot Five times a day a player with this skill may call headshot right before they fire their weapon. The attack will instantly kill any Zombie if it successfully hits unless it has a way to defend the attack. A game day is defined as 14 hours. After the initial 14 hours skills will reset. 2. Specialized equipment use This ability allows the combat specialist to use any weapon approved for use in Virus 28 including automatic weapons, heavy weapons (rocket launchers), shields, boffer weapons etc This skill also allows the use of Heavy body armor.

RULES Medic: Medics are proficient in keeping people alive although they require the needed materials to complete this task (which can be found in game). Medics are able to carry semiautomatic and single shot weapons and can use boffer weapons and shields, however they do not have the skills needed to operate heavy weaponry, or automatic weapons. Medics are also able to wear light body armor. Most specialized weaponry is off limits for the Medic. Medics have the following skills: 1. First Aid- This allows the player to state FIRST AID and remain within arm s length of their target, roleplaying bandaging their patient. This skill will restore the use of any limb damaged in battle however it will not revive a fallen companion. 2. Specialized Medical Use this skill allows a player to use any specialized medical item they may find in the game world. These items and their effects will be clearly marked. Combat a light tap with a weapon is all that is needed. Anyone swinging too hard with a boffer weapon will be pulled to take a boffer safety course. If a player dies and becomes a zombie, they can report to our staging area to obtain red boffer weapons to use in combat. The living may use melee boffer weapons and pre-approved Nerf guns. Zombies will typically use red colored boffer weapons representing unarmed attacks. (Only Zombies can use red boffer weapons.) In some instances Zombies may use thrown items. A living struck on the torso with a boffer weapon will lose consciousness and begin a dying count. A strike to any limb with a boffer weapon will render the limb useless until the FIRST AID skill is administered. Being stuck on two or more limbs with a boffer weapon will cause the victim to enter a dying count. Hits from a Nerf gun or other ranged weapons *(Thrown weapons, dart guns, bow and arrows, etc..) will count as a torso shot. Unconsciousness, Dying, and becoming a Zombie Combat in Virus 28 occurs in a variety of ways. Nearly all manner of Nerf and Nerf like guns are permitted. LARP style boffer weapons and shields are also permitted. Boffer combat is tap only! This is not a full contact sport and as such, When a player loses consciousness, they must lie down and begin a silent five-minute dying count. During this time, players may not speak nor move. At the end of the five-minute dying count, if a player has not been revived, they die and must report to the staging area to be outfitted as a zombie.

RULES Players who are in their death count can only be revived by receiving medical attention by a medic who has specialized equipment. This equipment can only be found in play by completing a group task. Group Tasks Group tasks are special missions that 2-6 players may participate in. Completing these missions will reward the players with revival packs, body armor, or specialized game equipment. Group tasks are limited to a maximum of 6 players for game balance reasons. Revival Packs Revival packs are specialized medical equipment that will allow a medic to revive a player who is in their death count. These can only be obtained by completing a group mission. Body Armor Body armor comes in two different forms, light and heavy. Light body armor can be worn by both the medic and combat spec while heavy body armor can only be worn by the combatant. Unfortified, Lightly Fortified, Moderately Fortified, and Heavily Fortified Buildings The varying degrees of fortification lets individuals know how many Zombies it takes to break into a building. The less fortified the building, the easier it is for Zombies to enter. Unfortified 1 Zombie is required to enter. A tent is considered unfortified. Lightly Fortified 5 Zombies are required to enter. The small bunk sized cabins, and campers are considered lightly fortified. Moderately Fortified 10 Zombies are required to enter. The large cabin in the town center is considered moderately fortified. Heavily Fortified 15 Zombies are required to enter. The large cabin by the lake is considered heavily fortified. As is the private room inside. In order for zombies to force their way into a building the appropriate number must go to the entrance and state that they are forcing their way in. The door must then be opened for the duration of the combat. Once the combat is over the door may be repaired and closed. Light Body armor will protect against 1 hit while heavy body armor will protect against 2. If you are stuck while wearing body armor, simply announce protected and the hit will not count. Once the protection from the body armor is used up it is rendered useless and cannot be repaired. Body armor can only be obtained from group tasks.

Latex/Boffer Weapons Latex weapons may be used as long as they are pre-approved by a game referee. The minimum length of a boffer weapon is 24 inches and the maximum length is 60 inches. Below are a set of guidelines for the construction of boffer weapons: How to Make a Weapon For purposes of this tutorial we ll assume you are making a short sword, one of the most common weapons in the game. 1. Gather Materials: You will need a length of ¾ PVC pipe, 5/8 thick pipe insulation (or pool noodle), open cell foam, duct tape, electrical tape, scissors and a hack saw. 2. Cut Core: Using the hack saw cut a 26 length of PVC. In general, when building a one handed weapon you ll want to cut your core 6 shorter than the length you want the weapon to be. When making a two handed weapon, you ll want to cut the core 7 shorter. 3. Prep Core: Take two strips of duct tape and cover the open ends of the pipe. Then cut off a 1 length of the pipe foam and then cut it in half so you have two 1 tall half circles of foam. Take one of these, roll it up so it is about the same diameter as the core and then tape it on. Repeat on the other end with the other piece of foam. 4. Cut Pipe Foam: Cut a 17 length of pipe foam. 5. Put Foam on Core: Slide the piece of pipe foam that you just cut onto the core. You should slide it up until the foam taped on the RULES end of the core meets up with the tip of the piece of foam you just cut. 6. Secure the Foam: Take three pieces of tape and tape the foam at the top, middle and bottom of the blade. 7. Cut and Attach the Cross guard: Cut a piece of foam 4-8 long to serve as a cross guard. Cut a hole in the center and slide it up the butt end of the core so that it sits at the bottom of the blade. Take two strips of duct tape and secure the cross guard to the blade. Then take some open cell foam and stuff it in the open ends of the cross guard. Then tape the ends of the cross guard closed. 8. Cut and Attach the Pommel: Cut a 3 piece of pipe foam to use as the pommel. Place it over the butt end of the core and close the foam with a 3 piece of duct tape. 9. Cut and Attach the Thrusting Tips: Cut one 2 cube of open cell foam. Secure it to the tip of the blade with duct tape. Take one 10 long piece of duct tape, center it over the tip and tape the tip to the foam. Be careful not to compress the foam. Then take 4 pieces of duct tape and cover the exposed portions of foam so that the tip is secure and all of the foam is covered. 10. Poke the Tip: Take a needle or pin and poke holes through the tape covering the open cell foam tip so that the tip is pliable. 11. Secure the Pommel and Blade: Take strips of tape and apply them lengthwise to cover all the foam on the blade and pommel. Make sure to have some overlap onto the handle so that the foam will be secure. 12. Tape the Grip: Take electrical tape and spiral wrap it around the handle to cover

the exposed pipe. Your weapon is now complete. You can perform a quick safety check and look for any obvious infractions such as exposed pipe or if the weapon is either overly stiff or whippy. All weapons must be inspected by a game referee. Be sure to bring extra materials just in case the weapon needs to be modified to pass inspection. There will be people on site to assist you with any modifications that are needed. Game on, game off, and leaving site. The game will begin promptly at 10pm Friday night and end at approximately 2am Sunday morning (28 hours later). Be sure to arrive on site early enough to get through check in and have your equipment inspected. Due to the nature of the game and the goal of surviving the entire 28 hours you must be present for the bulk of the time in order to receive any recognition or prizes for surviving the weekend. Leaving site for a quick store run is ok however you are limited to 2 hours away time throughout the course of the game. This also applies to showing up late to the game. Anyone who is not present for at least 26 hours of game play may still participate but will not be named a survivor at the end of the weekend. Once on site you must present yourself at check in (Kitchen). If you leave for any reason you must let the game attendant at the kitchen know so they can mark down what time you left. Once arriving back on site you will need to check back in with the kitchen attendant so they can record what time you returned. Anyone ignoring this rule will be disqualified from winning any prizes or being named a survivor. RULES Food and Concessions. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on site for very reasonable costs. Participants will be permitted to bring their own food and beverages however they are responsible for their own storage. Participants will not be permitted to keep food or drink in the kitchen. Zombie Weddings If you would like to get married at Virus 28, we will have a minister registered in the State of Ohio on site who can perform your ceremony for an additional charge. Please vandlar@comcast.net for details.
