Team USA s Kayla Harrison Takes GOLD at PanAm Games October 27, 2011 Team USA s Kayla Harrison once again demonstrated to the world that she is a champion of champions, besting rivals to take the gold medal in Guadalajara today at the Pan American Games. Harrison pulled a particularly tough list of opponents in the draw for the -78 kg division, and in the Pan American Games, that s as tough as it gets anywhere in the world, Asia and Europe included. That Harrison prevailed bodes very well for this young judo fighter as she heads toward the Olympics next year in London, said Jimmy Pedro, Harrison s coach at Team FORCE in Wakefield, Mass, and head coach of USA Judo s Olympic Team. In her first round, Harrison faced Brazilian powerhouse Mayra Aguiar Kayla beat Augiar in the finals to win gold at the World Championships in Tokyo last year. Harrison fought a very smart and tactical match against the Brazilian, who is unquestionably one the best girls in the world at 78kg and who s always a tough match for Kayla." In the semifinals, Harrison went on to defeat Cuban Yallenis Castillo, who took silver at the Olympics in Beijing in Kayla had to dig deep to win in over-time against Castillo, Pedro said. It was not her best match, but after a first-round battle with Aguiar and dealing with the high altitude of Mexico, it is not a surprise. In the end, Kayla's conditioning and mental toughness prevailed putting her in the final." Then Harrison faced Catherine Roberge of Canada in the final match for gold. The two women know each other s judo well, sparring together often in training. That can make it a tough match, Pedro said. But, again, Harrison won and took the top spot on the podium. It s a terrific achievement for Kayla, and it s even bigger because her division in the Pan Am Union is as tough as the European and the Asian, Pedro said. I m really proud of the player that Kayla has become at such a young age, Pedro said. Harrison is only 21. You think about what she s accomplished a World Championship in 2010, a bronze at the Worlds this year, and now a Pan American Championship. USA Judo Junior Team Collects Medals in Belgium October 31, 2011 A U.S. team of up-andcoming junior judo stars will be headed home soon from Belgium with a fist full of medals and a lot of new experience on the European circuit. "The Flanders Cup was a fantastic event, the perfect event for breaking into the European circuit," said Rick Meara, head coach of the team for USA Judo, and head sensei of Meara's Martial Arts & Judo Center in Burlington, Mass. "Our U.S.A. team did remarkably well, placing seven of the 11 members in the top five, including two silver and three bronze." A list of the athletes and their records at the tournament follows: Under 20-years, male -73 Ruben Martin 5th 4 wins 1 loss -66 Kyle wright 1 win 2 losses Under 20, female -48 Nicole Taniguchi 3rd 2 wins 1 loss -52 Ann Suzuki 1 win 2 losses -63 Chantal Wright 1 win 2 losses Under 17, male -66 Jack Hatton 5th 4 wins 1 loss -90 Jesse Smith 1 win 3 losses
4 Under 17, female -44 Haley Meara 2nd 2 wins 1 loss -48 Amy Suzuki 3rd 2 wins 2 losses -63 Meghan Arena 2nd 3 wins 3 losses +70 Mellissa Meyers 3rd 1 win 2 losses Hui-O travel team We are looking at taking small teams of judoka to local tournament a few hours drive from here. Hui-O supports many of the local tournaments to help build fellowship in judo and to challenge us with different types of competition. There are tournaments in Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, and the Carolinas. However, Sensei Mark and Sensei Kevin both work all day at the events as well as drive and help to manage the team. We would like to have a few parents or senior students volunteer to go along on the trip to help drive and to assist with team management. You can help keep stats on the tournament and take photos at the events for us. Robert Kirk was a huge help to us for our trip up to Connecticut. Having additional people along allows us to take the newer judoka to help them gain experience at small events or allow us to take more seasoned players to high level competitions. Two larger tournaments we attend that are coming up soon are the Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania in April and the AM CAN in Niagra Falls, NY in May. Athlete Funding for Shufu Yudanshakai Competitors Shufu Yudanshakai has established the Athlete Funding Committee to provide funding support for Shufu Judoka who have been representing Shufu at National and International Judo events. To qualify Judoka must have competed in a National Junior or National Senior level and at an E level or better event: the Junior Olympics, International Youth Open, or other Elite events including unfunded international events. Qualifying athletes must be a member of Shufu for at least two (2) years at the time of the application (current year plus previous year) and be a member of an active Shufu club that has been registered with Shufu Yudanshakai for at least two (2) years at the time of the application (current year plus previous year). Athletes applying for funding through the Shufu Athlete Funding Committee may not be sponsored or financially supported, directly or indirectly, by any other judo organizations. You can find more information and a copy of the Shufu Yudanshakai Athlete Funding Request Form, in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format, at Shufu Yudanshakai Athlete Funding Request Form. LOCK YOUR CAR PLEASE lock your car and be certain not to leave any valuable in open sight. There have been a number of cars with items stolen from them while people are inside the center. Windows have been broken to take things out. Purses, money, Navigation systems, IPODS and other items have been taken. Club membership - It is up to each one of you to PLEASE pay your bi-monthly class fees at the front desk. We have kept the rates for the judo club very low since we started the club. However, many judoka on the mat are NOT paying the center for the class. MNCPPC has remarked about this
5 on numerous occasions. If you are not paying your membership with MNCPPC, you will be asked to leave the facility. Judo Clinics - Throughout the year, Hui-O hosts clinics for Shufu Yudanshakai. I encourage all of you to try to attend them. The clinics cover a variety of topics. Topics vary from coaching, refereeing, standing techniques, mat techniques, advanced competition skills, different katas, tournament operations, and a variety of other topics. The clinics are held in Beltsville at the Academic Center. They are open to all judoka, regardless of skill level or rank. The clinics are an excellent way to get instruction from different instructors, see new techniques, work with judoka from other clubs, and gain valuable experience and knowledge. Shufu has some of the oldest and best referees, who are all former great competitors, now they are our sensei s and coaches. They live judo in every sense of the word. Join Hui-O-Judo on Face book. 7 Passing of Andy Dantzler Many judoka may know Andy Dantzler. He practiced at the College Park Judo club with his two sons, Nickolas and Westley, for the last 7 years. Prior to that he was with the Baltimore Judo club, under Sensei John Anderson. He was an instructor at College Park and worked with all levels of judoka. He was a national certified referee and coach. He volunteered at all of our local tournaments to help at the head table and to referee. He could serve in any capacity that you asked of him. It is with a very sad heart that we inform the judo family of the loss of Andy at the young age of 49. At his funeral, Sensei Kurt Tamai gave a nice celebration of Andy s Life speech reflecting on his love for his family and for judo. Sensei Karl Tamai gave a nice Celebration of Andy s Life speech on the selfless giving of his time and energy to help others to grow and develop. Andy will be greatly missed by the judo family and community. His obituary is below. Andrew A. Dantzler, 49, of Sykesville, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Born March 25, 1962, in Bethesda, he was the son of Taft Dantzler, of Blacksburg, Va. and Barbara Surrett Dantzler, of Rockville. He was the husband of Erin E. Dantzler, his wife of 17 years. In 2006, he joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's Civilian Space Business Area to lead the Living with a Star Missions, which explore how the Sun's highenergy rays and energetic particles can generate hazardous space weather effects near the Earth and affect satellite operations, as well as the Earth's climate. He was the first Solar Probe Plus program manager. He was promoted to program area manager for Civilian Space in July 2009, a position that had him overseeing program management for all Civilian Space programs at APL, including the MESSENGER mission, now in orbit about Mercury, and the New Horizons mission on its way to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. He especially enjoyed Judo and was a 3rd degree black belt and a member of the USA Judo Association. He was also a nationally certified coach and referee.
