12 Riders Stories For a Piece of Cake Riders Stories For a Piece of Cake Words & Photos Riccardo Rocchi The story of a journey on two Ridgeback Panoramas, halfway between space and history, from Cesena (Italy) to Singapore, travelling in full autonomy. Chiara and Riccardo: we are cycling for more than 18,000 km eastwards, until there is land, For a piece of cake. A slice of cake is an obvious pleasure for many, but an achievement for others: Chiara suffers from type I diabetes, and carbohydrates are an enemy to be defeated through insulin shots and by pushing on pedals. It s been ten months since we left home and our little Cesena, to embark on a journey to discover two continents. After the Western Balkans it was time for Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, which revealed the unexpected charm of the Black Sea and debunked many cliché related to these kind populations. Georgia and Armenia challenged us with the first real mountains of the trip. We climbed over 2000 m of positive gain in one day, with our full-loaded bikes (40-45 kg in total), between verdant slopes and fresh water springs. We have experienced the sincere hospitality of the Armenians, who, in remote villages without running water and gas, wanted to offer us shelter from the storm and the delicious food of their simple lives

13 Riders Stories For a Piece of Cake Equally amazing was the welcome we received in Iran, a country which is as much complex as amazing from the human perspective. From the rough mountains of the North to the huge deserts of the South, we pedalled through a millennial culture. A few hours of ferry took us to Dubai: we were shocked by its exasperated modernity, but also delighted with the little pleasures we had forgotten in the past months. Just outside the city, we went back to the colours and scents of the Middle East, riding south to Muscat, Oman, from where we took the first flight of our trip - in order to skip Pakistan, as scheduled - to India. In Jaipur the hardest part of the trip began: thousands of miles fighting with a no-rules traffic, immersed into unbelievable hygienic conditions. Nepalese parenthesis, despite difficult from a cycling point of view, has been a fresh air breath after Indian pollution. Southeast Asia has greeted us with open arms at the beginning of the New Year, among the carefree smiles of its people and the enchanting architecture of Buddhism. Our Ridgeback Panorama bikes have accompanied us into some of the most beautiful archaeological sites in the world: in the Bagan Valley, Myanmar, and among the temples of Angkor, Cambodia. The Mekong, on the other hand, was a faithful companion of pedal for over a thousand kilometres in North-East Thailand. During this time of the trip, the thermometer has reached really critical temperatures, which have imposed us rigid timetables and fast running rhythms. The storage of Chiara s insulin inside the passive refrigerator fixed on the back rack did not give signs of deterioration. Bicycles are behaving very well despite all the terrain types that we encountered and the extreme conditions they have been subjected to. Now, 320 days after departure, we are back in Thailand and the odometer marks 15,000 km. We have just found the sea again, the very clear Gulf of Siam, and we will not abandon it until our final destination, Singapore. You can follow the adventure of Riccardo and Chiara 22 23

Our ever popular touring category grows by one for 2018 with the introduction of the Ramble 2. We made the move into the adventure/bike packing scene with the Ramble last year, and it proved so popular that we ve added a higher specified model. Using the same frame platform and carbon fork as the standard model, Ramble 2 includes some nice upgrades to further improve your adventuring. Shimano s much revered Tiagra 4700 takes care of the shifting duties whilst TRP s highly regarded HY-RD disc brakes offer fantastic stopping power in all conditions. We ve made the switch to Clement s Strada LGG tyre for 2018 also. The large volume paired with its nail file tread pattern rolls beautifully on the tarmac but also provides great cushioning should you need to veer over the rough stuff. Tubeless ready rims complete the package. Old favourites like the Panorama and the Tour return, whilst the Expedition makes a move to mechanical disc brakes. These provide high performance whilst also improving the serviceability should you have a mishap in the middle of nowhere

Bit of a funny way to spend a 30th birthday, I thought. My son wanted to ride a bike a long long way away from his family and friends. And he wanted me to come with him! Everything was decided a few months before the trip while we were out on our local gravel trails. We were looking for a trip with a capital T, with an urge to discover new horizons. The question was: where to go riding in January and hope to have good weather? We d need to change galaxies. A dimensional change. Well, ok, changing hemispheres was probably easier. We didn t need to convince one another too much, as both of us go out and explore any chance we get. Discover the southern hemisphere, we would (cue the Stars Wars soundtrack). We would realise our dreams of discovering the nature wonderlands of Middle Earth aboard our steely steeds, alongside Aragorn, Legolas and Gandalf. Five months later, and we land in Christchurch, New Zealand. The trip down was somewhat longer then we thought. Our Millennium Falcon did not deliver on its light-speed travel promises, but no matter

You think you are making a trip, but soon it is making you - or unmaking you. - Nicolas BOUVIER, The Way of the World Our travel bags are pared down to the minimum as R2D2 and C3PO were left at home. Just our lightsabers, some magical rings and two magnificent bicycles, one of which is a brand new Ridgeback Panorama Disc. The changes brought by these unfamiliar lands are immediate. We have to ride on the wrong side of the road (can t train for that in France), the wind is extremely playful, the weather fairly lunatic, the hills are steep, the lorries are aggressive and a little too intimate. Then there is the strange language, with Mordor and its Orcs not far away. The Stormtroopers are numerous. Our maybe it's the jet lag making us see things. Little by little, we are seduced by the surroundings, transporting us deep into enchanted lands. The force is strong. The force is irresistible. Once collected by our vessel, we are already planning our next trip, our eyes sparkling at the idea of new sights to see, whether at home or abroad. So much earth to discover, will we have time? Members of the order of cyclo-tourists, we are. And I can turn to Bastien to say I am your father. But he knew that already ;-) On a serious note, we had an amazing time, sharing this father-son moment together on the other side of this wonderful world. The Ewoks are so friendly! We ride the cycle trails, the high-def landscape passing before our eyes. This is intense. After 30 days of traveling, with close to 2300km under our wheels and nothing other to do then soak up the views, admire the land, and pedal all day, our trip comes to an end. The power of New Zealand is within us. No longer do we need our lightsabers and our precious rings. Our bikes are all we need

31 Avenida Series Easy Cycling Avenida is our modern take on the traditional Dutch style bicycle. Packed full of practical features but not lacking any of the charm. We ve increased the range for 2018, adding an 8-speed Shimano Nexus hub gear version and a 3x7 geared version to the line up. Both of these models also feature a Shimano dynamo hub system that provides power to a front light, perfect for aiding visibility on those dawn and dusk rides. A battery powered rear light is fitted to the pannier rack, making you visible to other road users whilst also being easy to maintain. Other features like mudguards, kickstand, chain covers and a deep step-through frame design enhance the Avenida s luxurious feel

40 Riders Stories The 100 Greatest Climbs The 100 Greatest Climbs Words & Photos Jon Wyatt The nearest climb to my house is The Rake. The Rake is a particularly nasty little climb hidden in the West Pennines in a little town called Ramsbottom. The Rake starts off nice and easy and doesn't really become a tough climb till the last brutal 25% section. I took my fast road bike which isn't really geared for climbing really steep hills but it's light. Ramsbottom is only about 20 miles from where I live, albeit on the other side of a large hill so I rode over on a nice, crisp, November morning and made my way to the bottom of the climb. I was, it's fair to be said, about to have a bit of an epiphany. My plan was, to climb every hill as fast as possible. As I've said, there's a league table and I fully intended to be quite high up it. Off I went. Flat out. Up on the pedals, spinning quickly. I shot up the easy bit, round the corner to the hard part which reared up above my head. Down a couple of gears and into the steep section. My lungs were already burning but now they exploded. With the fire moving down to my legs threatening to rob me of speed I put in a surge of power, launched myself up the hill and empty everything I had into getting to the top of this brutal little climb. With the top in sight and my body entering a fissionable state I pumped the pedals hard enough to make my vision star before passing the end point and rolling to a wobbly stop. That. Was. Horrible. Plus, as it turned out, despite going as hard as I could, mine wasn't a particularly fast time. I decided then as my battered legs tried to get me home, I was not going to try and go fast up these hills. I would climb the rest at a nice, steady pace on my Ridgeback. I decided I would use my touring bike for this job. It's quite heavy, it's not particularly pretty but it's comfy and more importantly, it's got a good set of gears. And so it went. My weekends became focused around getting to the chosen hills, riding those hills and then getting home again. My weeks became planning sessions for the weekends. I would create rides that encompassed, where possible, more than one of the climbs. I would read the description of each climb over and over again, peruse the internet for pictures, hoping to build an image in my head of just how hard the thing would be. Further and further afield I would go. Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire. I became very familiar with petrol station sandwiches and even more familiar with standing at a petrol pump. Sometimes the rides would just be up the hill and back down again, more often they would be a good, hefty bike ride round the countryside and what rides they were. Very rarely I did not get home without having enjoyed myself immensely. Riding in new places, seeing new parts of the country, clawing myself up guffing great mounds of rock. Brilliant. And some were so amazing. Buttertubs pass, Bwlch-y-groes. Oh... my...god. Let us cast our eyes down and clench our hands together in prayer to whichever engineer decided to build a road up this jagged monster of a hill. This was the only ride I didn't ride alone. I told a friend I was going and he asked to come along. What a monster! This thing is relentless, it carries on and on and on, 20%, all the way. I was never so close to stopping for a rest as I was on this hill, but I made it, just. If you only ride one hill in the book, make it this one. What an amazing climb. Which brings us to the strange, bizarre mind-set of the climbing cyclist. What an odd group of people we are. See a hill, want to climb, hurt ourselves doing it, enjoy the pain. Do it again. That's not normal. We do it because there is a special place when all that can be done is turn pedal after pedal. When there is nothing other than the million ton weight of each leg slowly rotating, the three feet in front of your front wheel and somewhere, up ahead, is a peak, a summit, the end. I rode that. I made it to the top. And so round the country I drove and rode. My ever-tolerant wife endured some quite frankly, bizarre holidays as we travelled from one corner of the country to the other, We saw quite a few B&B's, she had lots of time browsing gift shops, small village cafe's and dog walks on top of desolate peaks as she waited for me to lurch round the corner, sweating, panting, but happy. Thanks love. Two years of pushing pedals up big hills. Two years of blood, sweat, pain and wonderful, wonderful hills. What an amazing country we live in. I'd eaten a hundred bananas, a hundred bags of Haribo, drank hundreds of litres of water from water bottles splashed in rain water and sheep crap from a hundred different roads

41 Riders Stories The 100 Greatest Climbs Finally, I had 99 in the bag. I'd saved the biggest and best till last. Bealach na ba. The pass of the cattle. A climb steeped in history. Sea level to 2053 feet above in less than five miles. A climb difficult in a car never mind on a bike. And first I must get there. 10 hours from our house in the car. Of course, a minor injury in the form of a broken collar bone slowed me down a little but once recovered I (and my wife) girded our loins and headed Northwards to the Scotland s. Sweet mother of god. What a climb. What an experience. It was a bit windy, to be honest. And the higher I got, the windier it got. It got quite cold too. And wet. But hey, those are conditions I'm used to. The camera does it absolutely no justice whatsoever, This was the climb to end the one hundred. And so it was all over. I'd ridden them all. Done. Riding in new places, seeing new parts of the country, clawing myself up guffing great mounds of rock. Brilliant
