11 GIRLS BASKETBALL RECORDS REFLECT CHANGES Since the inception of girls All Star basketball in 1971, the game has undergone many changes, and some of the girls All Star records reflect those changes as the game moves into its 40 th annual contest this year. In that first North South All Star game in 1971, Holly Briley of Vilonia ensured her place in All Star history as she scored the first points in the All Star game at Little Rock s Barton Coliseum. Briley went on to score 22 points in that game to lead the North to an exciting overtime victory. Octavia Owens of Guy Perkins and Sharon Morgan of Star City were named the game s first most valuable players. Parkin s Beth Haizlip set the girls six on six scoring record with 28 points in the 1973 game, and Gail Buffington of Stephens equaled that mark in Haizlip also holds the record for the most field goals in an All Star game with 11. The 1979 game marked the end of an era as it was the last game ever played in Arkansas under the old girls six on six rules. Since then, the girls have played the more familiar style of five on five full court basketball. Another series of changes came in 1981 as the teams were changed from North South to East West, and the game was moved from mid June to late July/early August to coincide with the boys' All Star activities. Also, the first two game series in girls All Star action was played that year. In 1989, one game was eliminated and a single game now is played at the end of All Star Week. Brenda Rhodes of Wilmar established the five on five scoring record in 1984 as she scored 27 points in game two of the series. Rhodes exploits paced her East team to a win over the West, tying the All Star record for the most points scored by a team. For the first time in All Star history the game moved to Northwest Arkansas in 2002, allowing the All Stars the opportunity to showcase their talents in Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas Campus. Here is a rundown of girls All Star facts and figures: DATE AND SITE OF FIRST GIRLS ALL STAR GAME: Friday, June 11, 1971, Barton Coliseum, Little Rock ALL STAR SCORING FIRST POINT: Holly Briley, Vilonia, 1971 INDIVIDUAL HIGH SCORER (6 on 6): Beth Haizlip, Parkin, 1973, 28; Gail Buffington, Stephens, 1978, 28 INDIVIDUAL HIGH SCORER (5 on 5): Brenda Rhodes, Wilmar, 1984, Game 2, 27 MOST FIELD GOALS: Beth Haizlip, Parkin, 1973, 11 FIRST THREE POINT GOAL: Nevellie Jones, Wynne, 1987 HIGHEST FREE THROW PERCENTAGE: Myra Perkins, Lynn, 1977, MOST FREE THROWS MADE: Linda Poe, Bradford, 1977, 11 MOST POINTS SCORED (Team): South 92 (South 92, North 74), 1972; East 92 (East 92, West 86), 1984, Game 2 FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED (Team): East 43 (East 77, West 43, 2001)

14 BOYS ALL STAR BASKETBALL HISTORY For 55 years the Arkansas High School Coaches Association East West All Star boys basketball game has become an Arkansas tradition. Many of our state s basketball legends have participated in the All Star game and provided fans with thrilling moments. Listed below are a few of those exciting performances Loyd Jones of Lincoln become the first player to score in the inaugural All Star game at the Little Rock High School (Central) Gymnasium. Jones West team cannot hold this early advantage, however, and the East wins, The West evens the All Star series at one game each with a decision over the East. The game s leading scorer is Pat Foster of Emerson, who goes on to become a player and assistant coach at the University of Arkansas Future University of Arkansas star Almer Lee of Fort Smith Northside pours in a then All Star record 31 points, powering the West to an win. Lee s 12 field goals in that game still holds a share of the All Star record Desha Central s Caldwell Jones scores 18 points and grabs 8 rebounds, but his East team goes down to defeat, More successful than his East team is Jones, whose basketball career carries him to a long stint in the NBA Dexter Reed of Little Rock Parkview sets the All Star scoring record with a 32 point performance. Reed s West team falls just short, though, and loses a thriller The West, despite the powerful combination of Fort Smith Northside s Ron Brewer and Conway s Marvin Delph, falls to the East The two thirds of the Razorbacks famed Triplets combined for 25 points and 20 rebounds in a losing effort The third of the Triplets, Sidney Moncrief of Little Rock Hall, is named MVP of the All Star game as his 17 point, 17 rebound performance helps the East to an win. Moncrief s 17 rebounds is still an All Star record Arkansas most highly touted prospect, Keith Lee of West Memphis, is held to only 18 points in the two All Star games, and his East team loses twice to the West. Lee, who finished his high school career with a 60 game win streak, later goes to Memphis State, becoming a three time All American MVP Anthony Bledsoe of Little Rock Central dominates the series, leading his East team to a twogame sweep. After posting a 16 point performance in game one, an East win, Bledsoe explodes for 22 points and 10 rebounds in game two as the East wins Russellville s Corliss Williamson was named the MVP. 18 RECORDS REFLECT GREAT FOOTBALL PERFORMANCES In the first Arkansas High School Coaches Association All Star football game in 1956, a young football player named Jackie Pearce of De Queen was in the right place at the right time as he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to give the West a 6 0 lead. He was the first player to ever score a touchdown in an AHSCA All Star football game. Now moving into its 51 st annual contest, the AHSCA East West All Star football game has been the stage for many Arkansas high school football greats, and the All Star records reflect these great performances. Darrell Hatchett of North Little Rock set his place in All Star history in the 1967 game with records for completions and passing yardage. Hatchett hit on 15 of 27 passes for 233 yards as he led the East to a victory. In 1974, Larry Lawrence of Augusta returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown on his way to the game s outstanding back award. Lawrence s kick return, which helped the East to a win, still stands as an All Star record. Nakita Robertson of West Memphis became All Star history s leading rusher in the 1980 Silver Anniversary game, setting two records. Robertson picked up 142 yards on 11 carries, good for the all time rushing record. One of those carries went for 99 yards, establishing the record for the longest run in All Star competition. Robertson picked up the game s outstanding back award and led the East team to a 34 0 rout. Malvern s Todd Quick also found his way into the record book in that 1980 game with a 48 yard field goal. In the 1983 All Star game, Jonesboro s Steve Carson hit Hurricane teammate Bobby Clemons with an 85 yard pass, the longest All Star completion. Their connection with only 28 seconds left in the game gave the East a thrilling 13 9 come from behind victory. Although no All Star records were set in the 1986 game, the contest did assure itself a place in All Star history. It became the first game to go into overtime. After regulation play ended at 12 12, the West used a touchdown pass from Bret Aggus of Fayetteville to Hope s Marcus Jackson to gain an victory, breaking a seven year win streak by the East. In 1989 more records were established in the East s victory. The East s 35 points were the most scored in the 34 year history of the game (until 1992), and the two teams combined for the highest total score, 53 points (until 1992). Also Paul Burnett of Little Rock McClellan tied the All Star record by completing 15 passes. In 1992 the West scored with nine seconds left, then converted a two point conversion pass to edge the East The 71 points produced were the highest in All Star competition, and the 36 points by the West set the all time scoring mark. In 1998 the East defense held the West to minus 47 yards rushing, another All Star record. The East won that game History was made at Estes Stadium in Conway in 1999 as the two teams played to a tie. For the first time in All Star history the game moved to Northwest Arkansas in 2002, allowing the All Stars the opportunity to showcase their talents in Reynolds Razorback Stadium on the University of Arkansas Campus.
