09-club-mediaguide0609am.qxp 7/6/ :29 AM Page 2 Dear SCCA Media Partners: Welcome to another extraordinary season of SCCA Club Racing, my first as SCCA President and CEO. There have some exciting new developments with the program as of late, making 2009 a ground-breaking year for SCCA Club Racing. Though it may be old news now, the SCCA National Championship Runoffs will move to historic Road America from , making it the sixth track to host the pinnacle of amateur motorsports. Road America has long been a favorite course among racers and already hosts one of the largest Club National races of the season, the June Sprints. While moving the Runoffs to a new venue always poses some logistical challenges, the feedback we ve received from the Club Racing community since the announcement has assured us this will be a Runoffs to remember. The move to Road America will no doubt create a new crop of captivating racing tales, as numerous teams will be making their first appearance at the Runoffs and perhaps a few veterans will get their first taste of Runoffs success. We hope to see you in Elkhart Lake, Wis., in September to share these stories with the masses. Also new in 2009 is the SCCA Club Racing Super Sweep, the most challenging award a racer can earn. To accomplish this feat, a driver must win: a Divisional Championship, a race at one of nine select Club National Races, a National Championship and a newly formulated nationwide points structure all in the same class. We re hopeful the new award will unite the entire spectrum of Club Racing, making it a truly national competition by giving Club Racers the opportunity to compete head-to-head against drivers across the country. No matter which race you attend, I encourage you to roam the paddock and chat up our drivers, teams and staff. Rest assured, each weekend brings a new story to be told and our monthly publication, Sportscar, can only fill so many pages with the inspiring, tragic and hilarious happenings of the SCCA and its members, so we thank you for your assistance. If you have any additional questions about SCCA Club Racing, you can always contact our Communications department for help. Thank you again for your support of SCCA Club Racing. I look forward to seeing you at the races, Jeff Dahnert SCCA President & CEO WHAT IS SCCA? Sports Car Club of America, Inc. was founded 65 years ago by a group of amateur motorsports enthusiasts and today boasts nearly 50,000 members. SCCA now sanctions over 2,000 amateur and professional motorsports events each year. With 114 regional chapters covering the entire United States, Guam and Puerto Rico, SCCA provides true grassroots participation and is the largest active motorsports membership organization in the world. Local events at nearby circuits remain the backbone of club activities. SCCA's volunteer staff provides everything from course marshaling to timing and scoring, at both club and professional events. In addition to Club Racing, SCCA is the home to Pro Racing, RallyCross, Solo and RoadRally, all of which offer a wide variety of amateur and professional motorsports competitions. SCCA Enterprises, a wholly owned subsidiary of SCCA, constructs and maintains two cars, the venerable SCCASpec Racer Ford, a singleseat sports racer that is one of Club Racing's most popular classes, as well as the dual purpose Formula Enterprises/Enterprises Sports Racer, now in its seventh year, with Formula Enterprises making its Runoffs debut in SCCA's Club Racing program is designed to fulfill the need of the "amateur athlete." It is a comprehensive, nationwide program featuring races held throughout the year that cater to the driver who perhaps prefers to test his or her skill on a part time basis, rather than compete full-time on SCCA's professional circuits. Nevertheless, because the competition at the club level is so fierce, many professionals also participate in this program to further hone their skills and compete at SCCA's National Championship Runoffs. The amateur road racing program is administered by SCCA's Club Racing Department. A full staff of SCCA personnel handles the needs of the amateur race car driver, developing a full schedule of 240 Regional events, along with approximately 30 Driving Schools, 45 Performance Driving Experience events and another 70 National races. Club Racing is an integral part of SCCA. Nearly half of the membership is involved on the amateur level, either as drivers, crew, workers or officials. More than 8,000 SCCA members hold competition licenses allowing them to compete within SCCA's Club Racing programs. 2 3

09-club-mediaguide0609am.qxp 7/6/ :29 AM Page 6 CLUB RACING CATEGORIES AND CLASSES The following are the classes that compete in SCCA Club Racing National events. Participation totals determine which 25 classes will take part in the Runoffs. Many of America's best racecar drivers today, such as Sam Hornish Jr., Buddy Lazier, Boris Said, Scott Sharp, Buddy Rice, Graham Rahal and Jimmy Vasser participated in some class within SCCA's Club Racing programs. SHOWROOM STOCK CATEGORY Late-model, mass-produced street cars like those bought right off the showroom floor. Aside from a roll cage and safety equipment, there are very few modifications allowed to the cars. Classed by performance potential into two classes: Showroom Stock B (SSB) and C (SSC). Each class has over 30 different cars eligible to compete within that class. SSB is made up of entries like the Acura RSX-S, BMW Z4, Honda Civic, Mazda MX-5, Mini Cooper S and Pontiac Solstice. SSC is the slower, but no less exciting Showroom Stock class and includes cars such as the Dodge Neon, Honda Civic Si, MAZDA3, Chevrolet Cobalt and Volkswagen Rabbit. Many of the drivers in Showroom Stock move up to compete in the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge. PRODUCTION CATEGORY Series produced cars which are allowed a range of performance modifications while retaining their original design, structure and drive layout. There is no age limit, such as Showroom Stock, so Production includes cars as old as 50 years and as new as current body styles. The four performance potential based classes include: E Production (EP), F Production (FP) and H Production (HP). 6 EP is the fastest of the Production classes with HP running the slowest in the category. Several cars in the Production classes can be run in more than one class, just by changing the engine between races. Cars included in Production classes come from a diverse group ranging from the Datsun 510, MG Midget, B and A, Fiat X1/9, Alfa Romeo Spyder, Lotus Super 7 and Austin Healey Sprite, to the BMW 325, Mazda Miata, RX-7 and RX-8, Nissan 240, Honda Prelude, Suzuki Swift GTI and Toyota MR-2. FORMULA CATEGORY The six formula classes are all single-seat, open-wheel racecars. They are built to detailed specifications for weight, size and engine displacement. There are incredible power to weight ratios in each class. The six classes in order of fastest to slowest are: Formula Atlantic (FA), Formula Continental (FC), Formula Mazda (FM), Formula Ford (FF), Formula 500 (F500), Formula Vee (FV), Formula Enterprises (FE) and Formula 1000 (FB). Many of the winged FA and FC cars, along with several of the nonwinged FF cars are produced by some of the same companies that make Indy-type cars such as Lola, Van Diemen and Reynard. FA cars have motors that generate as much as 240hp. FB cars use motorcycle power. The FC runs a stock 2-liter engine with about 150hp while the FF 1600 motors make around 120hp. FM utilizes a sealed Mazda rotary engine, while the FE car uses a sealed fourcylinder motor. FV includes many home-built cars, as well as cars built by proven manufacturers, and is one of the most competitive and popular classes in SCCA. FV entries all run 1200cc stock VW engines. F500s run small displacement, two-stroke engines like snowmobiles, and are one of the least expensive classes to run in SCCA. SPORTS RACING CATEGORY There are four classes of purposebuilt road racing cars with full composite bodies. Underneath, these cars are pure racing machines. The power plants in these cars vary from home-built "pieces and parts" engines to sealed identical motors. 7

09-club-mediaguide0609am.qxp 7/6/ :29 AM Page 8 The C Sports Racing (CSR) and D Sports Racing (DSR) classes feature a variety of chassis including home-built, innovative designs and manufacturer produced cars. These classes evolved from the old Modified category in the 1960s. Sports 2000 (S2) cars are opencockpit, rear engine automobiles using a standard Ford 2000cc single overhead camshaft engine. The Spec Racer Ford (SRF) is a one-design, single seat car utilizing a sealed Ford engine. It is SCCA's largest class and continues to provide cost effective racing for more than 800 competitors. By limiting the modifications and preparation costs, this class emphasizes driver ability over spending. SEDAN CATEGORY American Sedan (AS), comprised of Chevrolet Camaros, Pontiac Firebirds and GTOs, and Ford Mustangs, are production-based chassis with modified suspensions and brakes. Engines are primarily carbureted 302 and 305 CID V- 8s that have been balanced and blueprinted, but recently fuel injection has also been permitted. TOURING CATEGORY In response to the ever increasing performance of today's street cars and to expand participation by various manufacturers, SCCA has developed a category for those high performance cars which, because of their performance potential, required some changes to their wheel/tires and suspension components. Touring 1 (T1) features the Dodge Viper, Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911 and Ferrari 360. The most recent Viper and Corvette Z06 models as well as the Ford GT are found in Super Touring (ST). Front runners in T2 are the Camaro/Firebird, Mustang GT, BMW M3, Pontiac Solstic GXP, Cadillac CTS-V, Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru STi. In T3 you ll find such models as the Mazda RX8, Audi TT and Chevrolet Cobalt. GRAND TOURING CATEGORY GT cars are purpose-built, highlymodified "silhouette" replicas of series-produced sports sedans. GT cars are permitted tube-frame chassis with performance being equalized by allowing cars with smaller engines to compete at a lighter weight. GT-1 cars are the fastest of the category, and many cars have run in the Trans-Am series. GT-2, GT-3 and GT-Lite cars get progressively lighter and less powerful. Cars include Toyota Celicas, Mazda RX-7s, Nissan 200SXs, Honda CRXs and Austin Mini Coopers, just to name a few. SUPER TOURING CATEGORY The Super Touring category was designed to allow late-model production-based cars, like those found in Touring, more extensive modifications, including wings, to, in some instances, engine swaps. World Challenge cars are eligible for competition here. Super Touring Over (STO) is home to Cadillac CTS-Vs, Pontiac GTOs, Chevrolet Corvettes and Ford Mustangs, while Super Touring Under (STU) is where you ll find Mazda Proteges and 6s, Acura RSX and TSXs and Audi A4s. SPEC MIATA Making its debut in 2006, the Spec Miata (SM) class is intended to provide the opportunity to compete in low cost, production-based cars with limited modifications, suitable for racing competition. The rules are intentionally designed to be more open than the Showroom Stock class but more restricted than the Improved Touring class. Five generations of Mazda Miatas are approved for competition, including those built from , , , , and , each model with its own set of restrictions to level the playing field. Drivers can move up to the pro-ranks of the Mazda MX-5 Cup 8 9

09-club-mediaguide0609am.qxp 7/6/ :29 AM Page 10 THE STRUCTURE OF CLUB RACING Club Racing is the backbone of the SCCA with a program for almost everyone. Club Racing offers the opportunity to experience the excitement by climbing into a race car and competing against other amateur drivers or working on a corner within inches of all the action. WORKERS AND OFFICIALS Getting involved as a worker or official is as easy as going to a local event and volunteering to help. Workers are issued a license just like the competition drivers, and can work their way up through the four levels of licenses by participating at different events and gaining the knowledge and experience necessary to hold a national specialty license. SCCA licensed workers help staff most of the motorsport events held in the United States in one capacity or another. COMPETITION DRIVING Club Racers begin their racing careers by participating in two Driver's Schools. Successful completion of these schools makes the amateur driver eligible to compete in Regional races. There are more than 2,000 SCCA members who hold regional competition licenses and who usually only compete at races in their own area of the country. After six Regional events, the SCCA Club Racer has completed the requirements for National competition. Each year, the SCCA regions organize approximately 70 National races throughout the country. National events, culminating with the Runoffs, are the most prestigious within Club Racing. Many National races are spectator events and the Club Racers have the opportunity to put on a show in front of crowds of people. National Club Races are only one step below SCCA Pro Racing series, and many of the Pro drivers in SCCA series, as well as other series, came out of the SCCA Club ranks. Among the largest Club Racing events held each year are the June Sprints at Road America, the Rose Cup at Portland International Raceway, the Winter Nationals in Florida, the Glen Nationals in upstate New York and the Double National at Pocono Raceway. The biggest event in Club Racing each year is the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. 10 The Sports Car Club of America is divided into Divisions and within those boundaries are Areas consisting of Regions. In a nutshell, members belong to a particular Region; that region is within a particular Area within a Division. Areas and Divisions were created to break down the administration of SCCA into smaller areas. An Area is governed by a Director and Divisions handle the administration of competition programs including Club Racing, Time Trials, Solo, RoadRally, and RallyCross although each Region sanctions individual events. SCCA Divisions are as follows: NP - Northern Pacific SP - Southern Pacific RM - Rocky Moutain CD - Central MW - Midwest SW - Southwest GL - Great Lakes SE - Southeast NE - Northeast *Alaska is included in the Norhern Pacific Division, Hawaii and Guam are included in the South Pacific Division and Puerto Rico is in the Southest Division. 11

09-club-mediaguide0609am.qxp 7/6/ :29 AM Page 12 THE SCCA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RUNOFFS The SCCA National Championship Runoffs have evolved into what is now commonly agreed to be the pinnacle of American motorsports. The Runoffs were named by Car and Driver magazine as one of the Top 10 racing events in motorsports marks the 46th edition of the Runoffs and its first year at Road America. Nearly 700 drivers are competing for National Championship medals in 25 different classes. Every year, the event produces close, competitive racing and provides a glimpse at future road racing stars. The move to Road America, a four-mile course with plenty of elevation changes and three long straighaways, will likely suit some cars better than others and some driving styles better than others, but offer plenty of opportunites for passing and drafting. Expect to see some fresh faces atop the podium in QUALIFYING FOR AN INVITATION Each of the nine divisions holds a minimum of six National events where drivers compete for national points to gain an invitation to the Runoffs. Each contender can participate in as many National races as they want, but can only count the points from their top six finishes. Only the top seven competitors per division in each of the 25 classes are invited to the Runoffs, so competition usually comes down to the last National events of the year held sometime around Labor Day weekend. Many drivers spend the end of the summer "chasing points" by traveling to races out of their own division and acquiring the extra points necessary to guarantee them an invitation to the prestigious Runoffs. WHY GO TO THE RUNOFFS? While the big names make thousands or even millions of dollars a year, club racers normally compete for trophies. There are a few classes supported by contingency sponsors throughout the season, but, most of the time, when a Club driver is on the track it is for fun and to test himself against his fellow competitors. Winning a National Championship at the Runoffs means defeating the best Club Racing has to offer as well as bragging rights to say "I am the best in the country." The long list of past National Champions reads like a who's who of motor racing: Bobby Rahal, Graham Rahal, Jimmy Vasser, Scott Sharp, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Skip Barber, Boris Said, Michael Galati and Paul Newman are just a few of the familiar names. For many of these drivers, a National Championship was just a stepping-stone on their way to making a name for themselves in auto racing. A National Championship looks good on the racing resume and can help with sponsorship proposals for the following year. Securing a sponsor can help with a bigger and better season for the following year, be it in Club or Pro Racing. SCCA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY From 1951 through 1964, Sports Car Club of America determined its amateur road racing National Champions on a nationwide point basis from the United States Road Racing Championship, a select series of National races run throughout the country. In the first three years, only one overall champion was named. From 1954 on, champions were named in each of the SCCA amateur classes. In 1964, it was decided that a better way would be to gather the best amateur road racers in one place to compete against each other in an Interdivisional Championship Event. In the first two years, the winners were not officially recognized as the SCCA National Champions was the first year the event was officially designated as the SCCA National Championship event. In retrospect, The Runoffs winners of 1964 and 1965 are similarly recognized. In 1964, then, there were two - the final year of the point series and the first year of the Runoffs. THE HISTORY OF THE RUNOFFS Over the years, the name has changed as well as the method of qualifying for the event, but the idea has remained the same: 12 13

09-club-mediaguide0609am.qxp 7/6/ :29 AM Page 14 gather the best amateur road racers in one place and let them compete against each other. For the first six years, the event alternated between Riverside International Raceway in California (1964, 1966 & 1968) and Daytona International Speedway in Florida (1965, 1967 & 1969). For the next 24 years the Runoffs were held at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. The Runoffs moved to Lexington, Ohio's Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course from 1994 to In 2006, the Runoffs added a fifth track to it s resume, that of Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kan. During the early years, the event was known as the American Road Race of Champions (ARRC). The first year at Riverside saw 183 cars entered in 13 races for 17 classes. Practice began on Wednesday with qualifying Thursday and Friday and races Saturday and Sunday. In 1973, when Champion Spark Plugs signed on as the event sponsor the name became the Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Classic (CSPRRC). In 1983, the words "The Runoffs" were added to the Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Classic, and then, in 1985, Valvoline Oil took over as sponsor of the event and it became the Valvoline Road Racing Classic - The Runoffs (VRRC) saw the name shortened to just "The Valvoline Runoffs," which was used until 2005 when Kohler was named as the presenting sponsor. The 2007 event was sponsored by AT&T. Many Club drivers do not want to be professional drivers one day and are content to test themselves each year at the Runoffs, which makes for many return entries each year. During the 24 years that the Runoffs were held at Road Atlanta, many of the competitors gathered quite a following of local fans. The number of entries has grown steadily over the past 30 years. The 1995 Runoffs had 670 starters, the highest number ever prior to 2004 s eclipsing of 700, with 709 drivers starting in 24 class races. THE FUTURE OF THE RUNOFFS With the potential for more than 2,000 entries, the Runoffs still have a lot of room to expand before reaching its peak. One of the main goals of SCCA Club Racing is to broaden the appeal of the Runoffs and National Racing so even more of the eligible competitors will want to compete at the National level and work toward attending the Runoffs. In May of 2008 it was announced that following three years of racing at Heartland Park Topeka, the Runoffs would move to Road America for 2009 through While there is no minimum or maximum to the number of years a track may host the Runoffs, the concept of rotating the Runoffs to different tracks every three to five years seems to be the new direction of the event. THE FUTURE OF SCCA CLUB RACING Today, the Sports Car Club of America is the leading sanctioning body in motorsports. SCCA is based on membership and participation and the plan is to continue to provide the members the best benefits of any organization in the motorsports industry. In 2002, SCCA relocated its headquarters from Denver, Colo. to Topeka, Kan. in a state-of-the-art 20,000 square foot building. SCCA is recognized as the leader in motorsports event operations, and continues to provide expertise to other sanctioning bodies in North America. In 2009, SCCA was awarded an FIA grant to broaden its track safety program, which has provided for more advanced training of circuit inspectors. If the growth of the event over the past several years is any indication, the SCCA Runoffs will continue to be the pinnacle of American motorsports. The amateur racer is excited and proud to be a part of this prestigious event, ensuring that the Runoffs will remain the top event in amateur motorsports for years to come. The biggest race in Club Racing has always been supported by the workers from across the country. Each year the event attracts workers from as far away as Hawaii and Canda
