Rogers Ramblings I travelled to the Ridge for the first time this past weekend for the last Conference race of the season. The Ridge is a beautiful facility with an interesting layout, parts of which are very like Westwood was. In fact, there are even deer close to the track. And I am told there is a herd of elk that sometimes wanders by. It was an epic weekend of racing at the Ridge, in more ways than one. The weather was probably the worst I have seen in many, many years with strong winds and lashing rain making conditions very unpleasant for the workers standing on the corners all day. The covers for the stations are solid and very well made, but when the rain is horizontal, even they do not provide enough cover. We were literally soaked to the skin by Saturday night. All we could think of was getting out of the wet clothes into the warmth. Sunday was not much better but at least we were slightly better prepared for the conditions. I think Walmart almost ran out of their entire stock of wet weather gear on Saturday night! One interesting note was that whilst the workers showed up as promised, many of the drivers did not. The expected entries were down considerably and when we came down the hill on Sunday night almost all of the trailers were gone. We must be a very dedicated bunch of volunteers to have stuck it out longer than the drivers did. Either that or we are crazy. I will let you be the judge. I will see many of you at the various banquets that are coming up in the next few weeks. And I hope to see all of you at the META banquet in January, when we will be celebrating the 40 th anniversary of the club. Yes there is a cost for the tickets, but between now and the end of January, if you put $5 a week aside, you will have more than enough to buy a ticket. Hope we can count on you being there! Roger An opportunity to support META and at the same time protect your life and your property! META is currently selling to the general public, 400ml cans of Coldfire, the eco-friendly fire extinguisher, for only $22 each including all taxes. 6 Sports Car Club of BC Summers End Race Weekend. Many contests for 2013 championships came down to the last race of the year, making for some good racing on the September race weekend. One of the more interesting contests was for the SCCBC Open Wheel championship. Richard Granholm and Paul Higgins entered the weekend with a half point separating them. Unfortunately for Richard a crash put him out of contention giving the Open Wheel Championship to Paul Higgins of Abbotsford. Brent Martin Photography The CACC Formula Vee contest was not as close, Paul s rival there Was Martin Phillips; however it was still down to the final race on Sunday for Paul Higgins to clearly win that Championship. Because I crew for Martin, I was cheering for him of course. However Paul and I have been doing cone and brake-marker pickup together at the end of race weekends for a few years, so I felt good that it was Paul that won the Championship. The FV closely following Paul s red car in the photo is Martin Phillips. Burton Reynolds did a fine job of battling his way to the top of the Closed Wheel points becoming the winner of the 2013 SCCBC Closed Wheel Championship. Burton is always willing to give a hand to fellow competitors at Mission to make sure they can get their vehicles back on the track. Burton is fine example of a good Brent Martin Photography sportsman. Burton is one of the second generation racers at Mission, and I m sure his mom, Pam Stec, is proud of both his win and his contributions around the paddock.

Chris Doodson, of Port Coquitlam BC, took the GTU Championship in the final race of the year, with his Honda Civic. Chris was battling with Bill O Kell of Victoria for the top honours. Bill races the nice looking red MGB. Chris is well known for organizing the competitive Honda races in past years, he is another great contributor to our sport. Brent Martin Photography Abbotsford residents Allan McColl and Keith Robinson were another pair that battled on the track for the entire season. Allan McColl became victorious at the last race in his bid to win the CACC Formula Ford Championship in his Tiga. It should be noted that Allan s well restored Formula Ford also received a trophy at the 2013 BC Brent Martin Photography Custom Car Show at the Tradex Center this past spring. Allan is one of the people I can count on to help me promote the Mission Road Course at car shows. Kiwi Bishop of Agassis finished first in GT1, racing his tube frame Camaro, on Saturday September 14, The last race weekend of the year seemed to bring out many of the GT1 cars missing from the grids this year, so Kiwi had to do some serious racing to win. Brent Martin Photography Cherie Storms, SCCBC club secretary, has captured the SCCBC B-spec title, there will be more on Cherie elsewhere in this month s Mayday.

Ray Stec of Pitt Meadows, BC won the 2013 Sports 2000 championship at the final race of the season, with the 1984 Royal RP37 Sports 2000 he shares with his brother Roland. The Stec family is well respected at Mission for their years of contributions to motorsports. Most of their work these days is Brent Martin Photography done behind the scenes. As most of you are aware the Stec brothers got their start racing a Datsun 510, which they built to run in the Datsun Radial Challenge at Westwood, back in those days we often pitted beside each other. Rumour has it that they will be resurrecting the 510 over the winter. Most of the photos used here were also published in local papers; however I decide to rewrite and add to what was published, with the help of Brent Martin. In some cases the story Brent sent the papers with his photos were edited and became slightly inaccurate. Brent has done an excellent job of promoting road racing at mission this year. 10 From: Burnaby's great-granddaddy of racing He used to race sidecar motorcycles before coming to Canada Tom Berridge / Burnaby Now August 30, 2013 As a young boy, Al Ores experienced the last days of the Third Reich as the German army was pushed back in its retreat through his native Slovenia. Out of school and just 10 years old, Ores described those final years of Second World War as shivering in ditches, but in a strange way exciting. After the war, the Burnaby resident worked as an apprentice mechanic at a motorcycle factory in Austria, where he found another form of excitement. It was there that Ores caught the racing bug, acting as the daring human ballast with only leather headgear and goggles to protect him from the dirt track, racing motorcycle sidecars in Europe, before immigrating to Canada in In Canada, Ores married and raised four children, whom he later introdued to auto racing at the old Westwood track in Coquitlam. In 1963, he began a 30-year career at Bert's Automotive in Vancouver, where his competitive instincts were to take a lifechanging turn. There, Ores and work colleagues Charlie Gedecke and owner Bert Laakmann made a bet over who would be first to back out of a driver's training course at Westwood. None of them did and it eventually led to Ores buying out his friends' share of the Volkswagen Beetle-powered Bobsy Formula Vee. In his first senior race, Ores finished runner-up in a 30-car open-wheel field. "It started out I was to be the mechanic, but I needed a licence to take the car out on the track. It gets to you. You try to get people in the car, and somehow if you like the sport, you sort of prove to yourself, 'I did good, how can I get faster next time to get up with the gang?' It took me two years to get up front," Ores said. In his second season of International Conference of Sports Car Clubs racing, Ores won his first race at Westwood on his 36th birthday. With his then-teenaged son Mike, Ores built and raced Vees, including a nearnew Caldwell D13, which he raced throughout the Pacific Northwest, winning numerous club awards over the past 31 years. In 1979 and again in 1988, Ores won the conference Formula Vee championship. He was also the first Canadian to win the sportsmanship award, which he earned in Last year, he was honoured with a 10th Sports Car Club of B.C. sportsmanship shield, that will be named after Ores in years to come. During the annual association's trophy presentation, Ores was given a mock knighthood by local Burnaby business owner Ian Wood, of IWE rear ends. "Anything for a laugh," Ores said. Ores has the distinction of holding the never-to-be broken track record for open-wheel Vees at Westwood, which closed down in Ores, who is still instructing novice drivers after 42 years, was also said to have inspired the late, great Greg Moore to get into open-wheel racing. With decades of dedication to motorsport behind him, Ores, who used to drive the pace car for supporting races at the Molson Vancouver Indy, was inducted into the B.C. Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2002 as a pioneer in the sport. "You don't make any money out of it, but we can get together afterwards and tell each other how good we are," Ores said. "Camaraderie, that's what it is. Out there, you might be fierce as you could be, but in the pits, you share clutch parts, bearings, tires, anything to get them out on the track." One time, he lent a spare engine to his son-in-law who then used it to beat Ores to the finish line in a race. At 80 years young, Ores still can't shake the racing bug. In fact, it has become more of a family affair than ever, with wife Ann and daughters Diana, Tricia and Jennifer still supporting pops and brother Mike as competitor and crew, while grandkids help out cleaning cars and changing tires for Ores and their fathers. "When all nine grandkids are there and I have two great-grandkids, they call my pit, the daycare centre," Ores quipped. "I just want to hang in for at least two more years. My grandson Robbie will get his licence next year and I would like to run a couple of races with him."

He recently drove in the fourth annual Family Affair Racing Team or FART at Mission Raceway, an arriveand-drive event started up by Scott and Jennifer Arthur of Mission and Ladner's Bob and Pam Williams, which benefits Covenant House, an organization that provides food, shelter and guidance to homeless street youth. Ores also has plans to see many old friends at the 50th anniversary race at Thunderhill in San Francisco this fall. "It's too bad that I'm old," he mused. "I would have liked to get into a sedan - an American sedan - a Chevy. I'd like to try, not really NASCAR, a road course - a Yank tank - you can throw it around the way you like it." Submitted By Mike Bailey. From: No catching Storms By Gary Ahuja - Langley Times Published: October 02, :00 PM Cherie Storms never dreamed about getting behind the wheel of a car and seeing just how high she could make the speedometer go. I was always I am too busy painting my fingernails and going to the beach with my friends, she said with a laugh. Her father, Curt Storms, was always into motorsports and racing, so she knew about the sport. I went maybe once or twice a year to watch the races but I didn t really get involved until a couple of years ago, she said. A few years back, she completed a driver training program something her father was always trying to persuade her to do. It was through that process that I went OK, this is actually pretty fun, Storms admitted. Last year, she began racing in the Sports Car Club of British Columbia. She also now volunteers with the organization. But it is behind the wheel that the 29-year-old Langley woman is making the most noise. She capped off her first season capturing the novice of the year and rookie of the year awards and was ranked sixth out of 106 racers from around the province. For a first-year newbie, that is pretty good, she said. And her sophomore season was even better, as Storms won the 2013 SCCBC B-Spec championship, winning the season-long title with a great performance on the final weekend of the season. The season, which began in April, wrapped up on the weekend of Sept. 14/15. All of the races are held at the Mission Raceway. Did I think I could achieve it? Yes I did, she said. I just didn t know I could achieve it so soon. I really had to work for it and it came down to the very end, she said. I knew it was going to be challenging and that the others cars that were participating were all very competitive. It was certainly going to take focus and time and coaching and I had to be all on the whole time. The drivers in this particular series are all in Mazda 2s and can reach speeds of up to 150 km/h. The sport requires more than just getting behind the wheel and hitting the gas pedal. The training consists of reviewing incar video, visualizing the track s turns and corners and making notes as to when to hit the brakes, where to turn in and where to get back on the gas pedal. To try and make sure I was doing them as technically well as possible, she explained. With this series because the cars don t have horsepower the speed relies solely on the drivers ability to carry momentum, which is not easy to learn, and not to make any mistakes. As soon as you make a mistake, you have lost that momentum and it is hard to get back. It is just focusing on the technical points and making sure I prepared myself as well as I could so I was not going out on the track and making mistakes, she added. Storms, who grew up in Maple Ridge, works in Surrey as a customs broker.

From the Vancouver Province September 25, 2013: Time Flies For 14 Motorsport Pioneers Do you remember your childhood, when your birthday and Christmas seemed to take forever to come around? NIGEL MATTHEWS/FOR THE PROVINCE This 1965 Shelby GT350 R was driven by Tommy Hamilton, who had 40 podium finishes in two seasons of racing. Hamilton is among this weekend s 14 GVMPS inductees As you get older things change and time flies by. I suspect this coming Saturday afternoon the 14 inductees of the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneers Society (GVMPS) will be asking themselves, where did the past 40 plus years go? The annual GVMPS induction ceremony doors will open at noon at the Shannon Hall in the Cloverdale Fairground, and those inductees will be honoured for their major contribution to the following motorsport disciplines: hot-rod, custom car building, drag racing, sports car and circuit racing, motorcycling, as well as car collecting and restoration. In past years, deserving nominations have also come from the power boat and go-karting sector. I don t have enough room to list all 14 of the 2013 inductees so I will give you a sneak preview of a few names you might recognize, and I hope that you will attend the event and offer your support to the 2013 inductees. Two categories close to my heart are classic cars and sports car circuit racing. The name Tevie Smith and his car The Termite Taxi should be familiar to many readers. Smith is a regular attendee at car shows throughout the Pacific Northwest. Vern Bethel is the ultimate authority on 1939 Buicks; he owns the custom built 1939 McLaughlin Buick used by King George VI during the Royal Tour of Canada. He is also the go-to person for hard and nearly impossible to find parts for classic cars. Tommy Hamilton is best known for his 40 podium finishes (in two seasons) driving the unbeatable Brown Brothers Motors-sponsored 1965 Shelby GT350 R (pictured above). Wray Nixon is another familiar name from the Westwood track days who began his racing career in 1964 driving a Mini Cooper S and ended his racing career behind the wheel of a BMW. Ironically, the current Mini is built and owned by BMW! Nixon opened the doors to Nixon Automotive in Burnaby in May of 1970 and ran a very successful repair business until There will be lots of stories to hear this Saturday. The $15 admission tickets are available at the door and include light refreshments. Souvenir programs will be available for $5. All proceeds go to support and cover the cost of the non-profit society run by a group of dedicated volunteers. Nigel Matthews is the Director of sales and marketing for Hagerty Canada Hagerty is the world s largest specialist provider of classic car and boat insurance. 14 Some additional information and photos courtesy of Nigel Matthews: These are two photos that I took [of the Brown Brothers Shelby GT350 R] at different auctions, the RM Auction in 2007 held in Phoenix and the Gooding & Co Auction at Pebble Beach in 2008, the studio photo was taken for the RM Auction catalogue. The car did not sell with a high bid of $750,000 and I believe it still belongs to Colin Comer in the USA. [More information on Tommy Hamilton can be found at: The Greater Vancouver Motor Sport Pioneers Society, induction ceremony on Saturday September 28 was a huge success. Tommy came with an entourage of about five people including a reporter from the Campbell River newspaper. He was thrilled to be there and to have the chance to visit with so many of his old friends and racing competitors. More on the 2013 GVMPS Induction Ceremony A few photos of Wray Nixon racing at Westwood. Wray was originally from Peterborough, Ontario, and started competing in a 64 Mini Cooper S, 1071cc after moving west. Wayne Jamieson introduced him to local solo events and then to the Royal City Sports Car Club (RCSCC) and Westwood. More details on Wray are available at: Inductees/Wray-Nixon-R1.pdf.

Charlie Godecke was best known for racing Porsches sponsored by Bert s Automotive at Westwood. Charley also raced Porsches in IMSA and Trans-Am. As many of you already know Al Ores, Bert Laakmann, and Charlie immigrated to Canada in 1957 and traveled across Canada together. More information on Charlie Godecke is available at: Godeke-R1.pdf. Another Sports Car Road Racing inductee was Gerry Fortier who started his racing career at the Abbotsford Airport with the Sports Car Club of BC. Gerry and a few others formed the Royal City Sports Car Club at in the early 1960s. At Westwood he raced an MGB and a Morgan. 16 From ICSCC Forum: Thread: Challenge Accepted Challenge Accepted I'd like to share a cool story about my 2013 race season, and an unusually supportive seller. Back in April this year I purchased Nicholas Belling's Formula Continental. He posted this 2 days after I ed him saying "I'll take it": Originally Posted by nicholas_belling Car is sold.. My goal is to help him beat the Mission Raceway FC / F2 track record this year. thanks everyone for your kind remarks about my car and sorry for those that missed out on it. I thought it was pretty interesting that he'd made helping me beat the Mission FC track record a personal goal, especially after selling the car to a guy who'd never even driven a formula car. At that point I was thinking he'd take the one-off phone call when I got stuck on some Formula car specific mechanical issue, or maybe point me to someone who could help me with the specific problem. This was far from the case. If you look at my phone history during every race weekend this year there are at least 20 txt messages a day from him asking how things are going and giving advice or support in dealing with standard race day issues. Between races, it has been pretty much the same. I'm a novice mechanic, so having someone to teach me how to work on an FC has been awesome. Thanks Nicholas! So, the challenge! I like those! The Labour Daze ICSCC race at Mission was my one and only chance this year to take Nicholas up on this challenge, "To beat the Mission Raceway FC / F2 track record", currently held by Michael Lensen (who was at the track this weekend and quite supportive as well). I d raced in two other CACC weekends, but there is no FC class with CACC. I had to make this weekend count! So here is the story about my weekend: The weekend started poorly. In the first session I flat spotted multiple times and destroyed my front left tire. During the afternoon race I was having similar lockup issues and was forced to turn the bias to heavy rear just to keep the front left from locking. Something was wrong. I sent a txt msg to Nicholas and within an hour he was at the track with his scales helping me sort out the issues. We found a front corner weight difference of 70 lbs. That'll do it. Turns out I had being going the wrong way while adjusting height between my Goodyears and Hoosiers on the front left. Oops. The first day was over and my best lap time was well off Michael Lensen's record at 1: Good thing this was a triple weekend. Day two was my best chance to go for the record. I'd been saving a new set of Hoosiers for this big day. Overly excited to get out on the stickers I foolishly, foolishly, foolishly, forgot to set the pressures down. Turns out 31 psi in the rear makes it slippy. With the cool track temps and brand new tires gone I saw the best chance to hit the record slip away. During the afternoon race I had a challenging time getting clean laps with full a course yellow and lots of traffic. I did manage one fast lap at a , only off the record. So close!

The final day rolls around. Hip hip for the triple. I wonder if Michael had three shots at it? I decided to sign up in the FL class (Group 6) for the final day. That way I'd have a little more practice before the FC (group 3) runs. The quali and race for group 6 were before group 3 quali and race respectively. I went out hard in the group 6 qualifying. My best lap was a I couldn't believe it. I had done it, but in the wrong group. Near the end of the session I noticed my temps were over 220 and on the back stretch towards turn 3 I noticed a white cloud of smoke following me. Not good. I quickly pulled in to the paddock spewing water. With less than 60 minutes to FC qualifying I rushed to check the compression hoping I hadn't blown the head gasket. In my haste, I broke a couple of the spark plugs. I had a couple old ones kicking around but they needed a little sanding. Compression was good, no water in the oil or oil in the water, so I'd gotten away with one. Time for FC quali and my last chance with a cool track at the lap record. I pulled out of the hot pits toward turn 1 and hammered the throttle. Almost no power!&*!&# Through 1, towards 2, same thing. Time to get off the track at the turn 2 bail out because I'm not going all the way around. Damn! After a few minutes of poking around I ve determined the old spark plugs are no good and I don t have any spares Λ Luckily thanks to a kind donation from my good buddy Daryl in one of the other FCs I had a brand new set of plugs. I'm up and running, all ready to hit the FL Group 6 race. My plan was to use the race as a test to make sure the car could turn a couple laps and likely save it for the FC race in my last ditch effort to go for the record. Out we go, things are looking good, engine has power, car feels great. It's too good to be true.. and it was. 1/2 way around the track the water temp is climbing, and fast. By turn 5 I'm at 210 and turn 7 I'm at 218. Time to pull in. Back on the phone with Nicholas. "You might have an air pocket". Sure enough the right rad was cold and the left was hot. No water flow!. I tried bleeding it myself with little luck. Thanks to Keith and Alex for giving me a hand we finally got the water flowing. Ok, fingers crossed the car works. At this point I'm just happy to have a running car (as are most guys at the end of a triple). No FC qualifying times means I get to start at the back of the pack, behind a pack full of fierce FFs. I'm tempted to sit back for 3/4's of a lap to give myself some clean air to go for the record by pushing out a couple fast laps. But, I don't think that's good form. Time to grind. The group 3 cars were pushing hard. Carefully moving through the fords it wasn't until 13 laps into the race that I finally had some clear air. This was it. My last chance of the year to take Nicholas up on his challenge. I eased off for one lap to cool the tires and here we go. I don't normally talk to myself out-loud while I'm driving (thank god I don't have radios), but this time I was yelling pretty loud. Push push. Break point...now, turn in... go go go..this is it!!.. I crossed the start finish... Dash reads 1: YES YES.. WOAH!, hold on to the steering wheel, you're still in a race Next lap I go by the starter and see a "Transponder" board being shown to "us". I think it's the car in front of me, but damn, this can't be happening. A couple laps later, we are in the hot pits on a full course black flag. I wave over to my pit crew / crew chief / co-owner / wife, "can you ask the guy with the radio over there if that transponder board was for me"?... she comes back, "nope, and I've clocked you at a 108.2!"... I'm done, I don't even need to finish the race, I'm so happy. Of course I finished the race with the biggest grin likely visible through my helmet. After the race Michael came over to congratulate me. He didn't seem too worried as I think he'll be looking to take it back next year. Wow, what a weekend. What a season. I couldn't have done it without the help of Nicholas Belling, and my wonderful wife Jen (often commented by others as the hardest working person at the track). Setting goals is one of the best ways to push yourself. Thanks for the challenge Nicholas! Gavin Aitken

BREAKING NEWS!!! I am pleased to announce that Mazda Motorsports has selected Cherie Storms and Andrei Kisel as finalists for the 2013 Mazda Club Racer Shootout. As 2 of only 3 Canadian finalists, and a total of 16 in all of North America, Cherie and Andrei will now each work towards being 1 of the 5 selected to travel to Buttonwillow Raceway, CA, November to participate in the driving portion of the Shootout. This elite group of 16 represents Championship winning drivers of Mazda's from all across North America. Representing SCCBC, Cherie and Andrei will compete against very talented competition from SCCA, Skip Barber Racing, NASA and the Toyo Tires Spec Miata Series. In addition, Cherie is the first female driver to ever be chosen as a finalist. Mazda Motorsports welcomed SCCBC to be part of the 2013 Contingency Program and in addition to the race win proceeds Cherie, Andrei and others who registered for this program have already won, this opportunity is the big prize. Should Cherie or Andrei be chosen as one of the five participants, and go on to win the Shootout, they would receive a full season in the 2014 SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup, valued at $75,000 USD. WOW!! Please join me in congratulating both Cherie and Andrei and let's throw our support and best of luck behind them. I know that you both will represent SCCBC very well and this is a major achievement that helps our club and sport gain great exposure. More information will be provided as this final selection process unfolds. Steve Hocaluk President

Submitted by Doris Gidemeister: From: Clean sweep for South Surrey race-car driver By Sarah Massah - Peace Arch News Published: September 05, :00 PM It was a clean sweep for South Surrey auto-racing phenom Tracey Hazard this past weekend at the International Conference of Sport Car Clubs (ICSCC) Labour Daze tripleheader. The 42-year-old race-car driver qualified first and finished first in all three of her races at the Mission Raceway for the Spec Mazda Miata Championship series, which includes tracks throughout the Pacific Northwest. "It was a shock," she told Peace Arch News Thursday. "I wasn't expecting it." The sweep is just another accomplishment the four-year racing pro can add to her already extensive list, which includes being named driver of the year in the CACC (Canadian) series. With the season wrapping up in October, Hazard's team, which includes husband Tom who doubles as crew chief and mechanic will look to compete on a pro series in California next year. From Maple Ridge Times: It's about driving Maple Ridge resident Bryan Hellevang discovered his love of racing at age six, and decades later is sharing that passion with his family and fellow drivers at the Mission Raceway this weekend. Roxanne Hooper / The Times September 12, 2013 Since the age of six, when Bryan Hellevang s much older brother Chuck (then 19) first took him up to Westwood racetrack to watch the races, Bryan has loved everything to do with cars and racing. Now, at age 50, the Yennadon resident is a professional mechanic and still hanging out at the racetracks. In fact, he is racing his own car in this weekend s Canadian Association Car Club event at the Mission Raceway on Sept. 14 and 15. Growing up in Coquitlam, Bryan said even after his brother stopped making regular visits to Westwood, he couldn't give it up. "That's where I got the bug," he recounted. "Whenever there was a race well, I don't think I missed a race at Westwood from eight years old on." It got to a point where his father would drop him off at the gate Saturday morning, and the family wouldn't expect to see him again except maybe to sleep until racing ended late Sunday afternoon. In his early 20s, after finally having raised enough money working as a mechanic, Bryan bought his own gocart. He stepped out of the stands swapping out the spectator seats for a seat behind the steering wheel of a gocart. He rose to glory in only a few years, winning the spring-cart championship at Westwood in But admittedly, Bryan said, being a professional race car driver was not in his cards. Not only was it too expensive, but he claims he was never that good to go all the way. Still passionate about racing, however, he couldn't and wouldn't let go. He just found a new way to be a part of the action. Always a bit of a grease monkey, he used his experience under the hood to keep him embroiled in racing - eventually being called on to work during the week as a mechanic and eventually shop foreman for

Coquitlam Chrysler a position he still holds 35 years later - then working weekends as a mechanic for drivers in the professional racing series. He travelled the country for the next few years, often flying out Wednesday nights to whatever city was hosting that weekend's race. He'd prep the cars on Thursday, then be part of the action from the pit Friday through Sunday at which time he'd repack his suitcase and fly home again. With a new wife and a baby on the way, however, Bryan eventually backed away from the professional circuit, as well. But again, he couldn't pull away from racing completely. Through the subsequent years, he was involved in organizing and working the pits at the Molson Indy races in Vancouver, and helped transition racing from Westwood when it closed in 1991 to the Mission racetrack that started up a few years later, by taking an active role as part of the Sports Car Club of B.C. One of the race car drivers that Bryan worked with through the years was Rick Moore, formerly owner of Maple Ridge Chrysler and father of the late race car driver Greg Moore. But when Moore sold his 1989 Camaro to Terry Ward, Bryan had no idea that move would open a whole new world of racing for him. Ward wanted to start racing himself, and needed help setting up the car. He was given Bryan's name, the two met, and they've been best friends ever since. Bryan set up and maintained the car for Ward, but it wasn't long before Ward approached him about actually racing that car once in a while on the amateur road racing circuit. The duo shared the car for several seasons, until Ward decided to upgrade so to speak. Ward bought a new stock car three years ago, and gifted the old Camaro to Bryan. "It started out as a 1989 Chevy Camaro, and it's evolved from there," Bryan said, noting it's been heavily modified through all its years of racing. "It's a pretty quick car now," he added. "It's substantially faster than when Rick had it back in the day." That's the same car, #63, that Bryan will be racing this weekend at the Mission Raceway ( the second to last race of the year. Cars in seven different racing groups hit the track at 9 a.m. on Saturday for practice runs, followed by qualifier sessions, then lunch, and an afternoon of racing from 1 to about 5 p.m. Bryan said there are more than 100 entries for this weekend's race, promising an action-packed event. He's personally going up against 30 in his classification. "It's promises to be a good, wheel-to-wheel competition," said Bryan, who hasn't been racing enough this year to be a big contender this season. This weekend, he's in it more for the fun, not the points. "But there's going to be some championship challenges going on," he said, encouraging spectators to check out the action. It's all about competition, driving, adrenaline, and family It's not a cheap sport, and while Bryan has never rose to the professional level in racing, he has been able to finance his involvement in the sport thanks to his mechanical abilities. He explained that at the amateur level he doesn't get complete sponsorship, but gets in-kind sponsors such as Kirmac that painted his car, Lordco that helps with parts, and Castrol that provides the oil and lubricants. "I've been fortunate to be able to do it over the years," Bryan said of racing. "But, this is strictly amateur. At the end of the weekend, I might get a $5 trophy and an adrenaline rush," Bryan said. "It's all about the competition and driving the car when you're out there, taking a car to the limit, you're really living life. It's a huge sensory thing. It's not about watching life pass you by, it's about living life, and out there, you're really living." While Bryan said he races strictly for sport okay, and that jolt of adrenaline he said the main reason he's stayed involved all these years has been the camaraderie on and off the track. It's the social aspects not only for the racers but their entire family, that make the sport so appealing to him. For instance, Bryan won't be the only member of his family at the track this weekend. His wife Deborah and daughter will be in the stands cheering him on, while his son will be in the pit helping him push #63 to its max.

From: Hargrove clinches USF2000 championship in Houston October 05, 2013 Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Scott Hargrove captured the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda champion's title with a third-place finish in Houston while Neil Alberico took the win. Hargrove, 18, of Vancouver, BC, Canada, roared into the championship point lead at the start of the season collecting three wins in the first four events. It was a lead he would not relinquish despite pressure from teammate and now championship runner-up Neil Alberico, who took the challenge for the top honor down to the wire on the streets of Houston. We came into today with a good lead in the championship and I knew that I just needed a solid finish to end the championship today and that's exactly what we did. I went all out in qualifying and was able to get the pole on the last lap, which was pretty thrilling. I took the lead off the start and it was probably the calmest place I could have been and the most in-control place for me to be to secure the championship. As soon as the yellow came out, I knew that I would be hard-pressed to keep the lead from Neil who wanted to win. He got the jump and was able to win the race, but it didn't matter to me. Finishing third feels like a win because of the championship we have won. I have to thank USF2000, the whole Mazda Road to Indy and Mazda for giving me a great platform to race on, and the prize that they have handed out is second to none. I am thrilled and I just couldn't be happier. Finding his niche with the back-to-back championship-winning Cape Motorsports team, Hargrove shone, capturing four wins, nine podiums, five fastest race laps and six poles aboard the #38 Analytic Systems/Race Energy/Metal Action/Skip Barber Racing/Bell Racing entry. Hargrove, who was a Skip Barber Karting Scholarship winner a scant two years ago, finished second in the 2011 Skip Barber Summer Series and was Rookie of the Year before graduating to USF2000 last year in a partial season that saw his progress culminate in his first podium in the season finale at Baltimore. He will be presented with his Mazda Road to Indy prize of a scholarship package from Mazda valued at over $383,000 to advance to the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires in 2014 tomorrow evening at the series' awards banquet to be held at the St. Regis Houston. Alberico needed two wins and some misfortune on Hargrove's part to take the series crown. He proved he was up to the task with a magnificent pass on a late race restart to take the lead and claim his sixth win of the season. Henrik Furuseth, with PRL Motorsports, who posted his best starting position of the season in third, also found a way past Hargrove to claim his first USF2000 podium after earning the National Class champion's title last season. Furuseth also posted the fastest lap and will start on pole for Race 2 tomorrow another career first.
