The start of the Olympics The first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. Games were dedicated to the Olympian gods, based upon the ancient plains of Olympia They continued for nearly 12 centuries, until Emperor Theodosius ordered in 393 A.D. that all such "pagan cults" be banned. According to Greek mythology, "Pelops" was the founder of the Olympic Games. The games were linked to the religious festivals of the cult of Zeus. Aimed to show the physical qualities and performances of young athletes. Wanted to also encourage good relations between the cities of Greece with the games.

Olympic Events Boxing- Men fought until one was knocked out or admitted defeat. Chariot racing and horse riding were two equestrian sports played in the Olympics. Pankration- Like boxing and wrestling, but more attacks were allowed. Pentathlon- including events like running, jumping, wrestling, javelin(jumping distances using a long stick), and discus(throwing a heavy metal disc)

Who Competed in the Olympic Games Through the 12 centuries of the Olympic Games, many wonderful athletes competed in the stadium. Although the competitors were mortal, their Olympic victories immortalized them. Of the best athletes who left their mark on the sacred valley of Olympia, some passed all limits and became legends by winning in numerous Olympic Games and remaining a champion of their sport for more than a decade. Some of the athletes would be Nurmi, Zatopek or Lewis. All free male Greek citizens were entitled to participate in the ancient Olympic Games, regardless of their social status. Some of the participants in the games were Orsippos, a general from Megara, Polymnistor, a shepherd, Diagoras, a member of a royal family from Rhodes, Alexander I, son of Amyndas and King of Macedonia, and Democritus, a philosopher. Married women were not allowed to participate in or watch the ancient Olympic Games. However, unmarried women could attend the competition.

NIKE CHARIOTEER OF ZEUS In Greek mythology, Nike was a goddess who personified victory. She was also known as the Winged Goddess of Victory. Nike was described as the daughter of the Titan Pallas and the goddess Styx. She was the sister of Kratos (Strength), Bia (Force), and Zelus (Zeal). The Ancient Greeks considered that it was the gods who decided to grant victory to an athlete. Victory was often represented in the form of a winged female character, Nike. As the servant or messenger of the Gods, Nike flew down to the chosen person, to give them their divine reward in the form of a crown or ribbon.

Modern Olympics The Olympics has evolved substantially over the centuries, between the rules, requirements, frequency and even more have undergone significant change since they were first held in Olympia, Greece in the year 776 B.C.E. During ancient times they were held every four years in the summer and always in the same place. Now, the Olympics are held in different countries every time. Also, in modern times there are winter and summer Olympics which each occur ever 4 years. However, they are not held in the same year as they once were. Now, two years after the Summer Olympics are held, the Winter Olympics are held, and two years after that are the Summer Olympics, and so on. Winter Olympics were never held in Ancient Greece. The Winter Games today have sports such as figure skating, skiing, and bobsledding. Today, a torch is lit at Olympia to symbolize the ancient Olympics. Various athletes carry this torch throughout the country the Olympics are being held in until they reach the main stadium. These are only some of the differences and similarities between the ancient and the modern games. A great deal of the ancient games still applies to the modern and yet so much has changed.
