Subject: English Please find below a number of activities for this subject. Each activity will reinforce areas covered this year, as they are stand-alone activities it does not matter in which order they are completed. 1. Below is the story, The First Storm. Please read the story and then re-tell it in playscript format make sure you follow all the rules about writing a play (Use of a narrator, setting the scene, the name of characters in the margin and clear

2 stage directions). We would recommend starting the playscript from the point in the afternoon that the weather started to change. The First Snow Storm Away off on a warm sunny island, little Harry Hall was born. Flowers bloomed all the year round. The sun shone most of the time, although now and then there were thunder-showers. Many wonderful plants grew wild, while on the shore shells and seaweed and queer little fishes were often to be found. When Harry was six years old his parents took a journey to New York. It seemed very odd to the little boy to live in a place where there were so many people, and such great houses. After a while the weather grew cold, and he had to wear thick woollen clothing. The house in which they lived was heated by a furnace; but one day they had a fire of logs on the hearth. Harry enjoyed it very much, and thought the bright blaze so pretty. The sky was grey and cloudy one afternoon, and Harry had been standing by the window watching the street cars. Suddenly the air grew thick, and he could scarcely see the houses opposite. Something white and feathery fell slowly down and rested on the window ledge. Then it disappeared. But more and more of the little flakes came, until there was quite a ridge outside of the window. Harry opened the sash gently, fearing it might fly away. He was surprised when he touched it to find it so cold. He took some up in his hand, but in a moment it was only a drop of water. By that time the street and the men's hats and coats were quite white. Harry was puzzled to find a name for the beautiful white substance, so he ran to his mamma and asked her about it. She told him it was snow, and because the air was so warm on the beautiful island where he was born they never had any. The next morning he saw the little children of the neighborhood playing in it; but before noon the sun was so bright and warm the snow had all melted away. When the second snow-storm came Harry's papa brought home a beautiful sleigh, and gave his little boy great pleasure by drawing him up and down the street.

3 Harry soon learned to go out by himself, and made many friends; especially of the little girls, as he was very generous with his sleigh. But he has never forgotten his surprise when he saw the first snow-storm. 2. For your second activity, can you re-tell one of your weather closure days, in a storyboard, divided into either 6 or 8 areas? Remember, you must include the key activities and may write 1 or 2 sentences to accompany each picture. Subject: ICT We have used Powerpoint to support presentations about Athens and Sparta. Maybe you could make one about the fun you have in the snow, with lots of photos and descriptions, please. Try to include sound and a range of animations on the slides. Subject: History Each term we will study a different period of history, please do not anticipate what we will be studying by working on future topics, rather reinforce those we have covered with the relevant sheets that will need to be printed off. The autumn term is Ancient Greece, spring is the Romans and summer, the Vikings. Autumn The Modern Olympic Games Attached is an article about the Modern Olympic Games. Below are some questions for you to answer. Use the article to help you, things that you know already, or any other information that you might be able to find. Questions 1. Why are the games held? 2. Write down any other information that you think is important. The Modern Olympic Games

4 The Olympic Games, an international athletics competition, are held every four years at a different site. A modified revival of the Olympian Games, the Olympic Games were inaugurated in the spring of Planning for the modern games began in 1894, with the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC enlisted the aid of sports organisations and individuals of various countries, chiefly European at first. The committee drafted policy and selected Athens, Greece, as the site of the first Olympic Games. In theory, athletes of all nations are eligible to participate. Organisation The site of the games is chosen, usually six years in advance, by the IOC. Who can forget the amazing London Olympics of 2012? 2016 saw the Games heading to Rio, Brazil. History The first modern games, held in April 1896, attracted athletes from the United States, Great Britain, and 11 other nations. Only 42 events in 9 sports were scheduled for these games. The Olympic Games scheduled for Berlin in 1916 were cancelled because of World War I; those scheduled for 1940 and 1944 were cancelled because of World War II. After the games of 1904, which had little international significance because most of the contestants were from the United States, more and more nations have entered teams in the Olympics. The total number of participating athletes has also grown, from the 285 who competed at Athens in 1896 to the approximately 10,600 who competed in Barcelona in Since the first Olympics of the modern cycle, the number of women in Olympic competition and the number of sports and events open to competition at the games have increased. The number of medal sports at the 1992 Olympics totalled 28: aquatics (diving, swimming, synchronised swimming, and water polo), archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoeing-kayaking, cycling, equestrian sports, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, shooting, soccer, table tennis, team handball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, weight lifting, wrestling, and yachting. A third significant development has been the progressively superior performance by successive generations of Olympic athletes. Ceremonies An elaborate ceremony traditionally opens the Olympic Games. The athletes parade into the stadium, led by the Greek team, in honour of the founding of the Olympic Games, with the host nation marching in last. The Olympic Hymn is then played and the official Olympic flag (five interlocking rings on a white background) is raised. A runner then enters the stadium bearing the Olympic torch, initially lit by rays of the sun at Olympia, Greece, and carried to the present site by a relay of runners. The ceremony closes with the release of doves, symbolising the spirit of the games. During the games, medal ceremonies are held to honour the medal winners in each event. The first-, second-, and third-place finishers stand on a podium and receive gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively. Flags from the athletes' countries are raised, and the national anthem of the country of the gold medallist is played. An elaborate closing ceremony ends the games. The Ancient Olympic Games

7 The Romans The Vindolanda Tablets These flat pieces of wood were found at a site called Vindolanda, now Chesterholm, close to the border with Scotland and part of Hadrian s Wall. It was built in around 112AD so these are almost 1900 years old! They record all sorts of ordinary matters which happened when the Romans lived at the very edge of their world. Look at the following (sometimes only part is translated from the Latin):... bruised beans two modii*, chickens twenty, a hundred apples, if you can find nice ones, a hundred or two hundred eggs, if they are for sale there at a fair price sextarii of fish-sauce... a modius* of olives... Century of Ucenius: overcoats, denarii 13+ pepper, denarii 2 towel, denarii 2.for the festival.wine, modius* 1, sextarii 12. Now answer these questions: 1. How many chickens? (letter 1) 2. How many litres* of bruised beans? (letter 1) 3. How much is an overcoat? How much is pepper? How much is a towel? 4. How much does a modius* of wine cost one modius = about 8 litres. The plural is modii (not modiuses!)

8 Summer The Vikings - Fact or Opinion? Many hundreds of years ago people known as Vikings lived in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. They were farmers, but their land was not very good for farming. They could not always grow enough food to feed themselves. So the Vikings had to find new countries to settle in. The Vikings loved adventure. They set sail in their longships to find new lands. As well as travelling to Britain, they reached North America, Russia, Iceland and Greenland. For over 300 years the Vikings attacked and raided other countries. They were often very cruel to their enemies and many people lived in fear for their lives. They once attacked and destroyed the monastery at Lindisfarne, in the north of England. They even besieged Paris in AD 885. The Vikings were fierce warriors. They fought with swords, battle axes and spears. Some axes were so heavy that they had to be lifted with two hands. They also used large, round shields. Read the sentences below and write fact or opinion next to each one. 1. The Vikings came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. 2.
